I like the janky art style in this era of games. It's a shame this game plays like so badly and the story is trash.
Thanks for acknowledging the Romani existing and not using the slur. Lol. I think more people are starting to get it but dude I’ve had to correct so many people not to say they got “gyp’d” and them genuinely not knowing it’s a slur still.
I remember buying this at a thrift store for two bucks back when a vending machine would of given me a coke for one dollar. Those two bucks would of been better spent on a sugary drink that didn't give me a headache compared to Ultima 9.
Edit: I also forgot to mention that doing the virtue class quiz gave me the shepherd class which just gives you the hooked stick that's normally used for sheep. I had to kill the first human enemy in Britannia by spamming the crappy rock spell. Clerics I assume got some good spell for healing or something better than a giant stick or are nominally less screwed than sheepherders.

@@TheCantinaChannel The real crazy part was playing the game back then even after knowing how bad it was from reading about it and watching a video game entertainer play it and cursed it on all its flaws.
And I gave up after spamming weak rocks and reaching the castle just from how not fun it all was.
Old PC games are either a janky mess that hides some actually sophisticated and interesting systems that modern games can and should learn from, or they're a janky mess so borderline unplayable that you start to question if you even like videogames.

I have fond memories of this game. It was the first Ultima game I actually owned rather than playing at a friend’s house. I enjoyed the hell out of it. It really bothered me that that guy, what was his name (Stooly?) Complained about it so hard that he got to be friends with Richard Garriott and visit his castle and stuff. What a crybaby.
Oh, I remember now, Ultima 8: Pagan came before this one, and was dark and intriguing. It was the last isometric view game, but had less typical story. Atmospheric as heck, but the gameplay fell apart at the end. Worth a look if you’ve got the time.
I think you don't have the movies installed, that's why it went from shrine of Humility directly to the underwater city of the gargoyles.

honestly I noticed the weight changes although I mean more so from curiosity than any intention to harm but 90% of people that will comment wont bother to include their intentions within the message and just basically say it because no social consequences on the internet.

Ultima 4 is still one of my favorite games. It's fantastic, the game is dated and there is no final boss as it's not designed to be just a game of combat, it's kind of an oddball but I love it.
That said, Ultima lost it's luster as it failed to translate into modern gaming in any way. Ultima IX ks just... Just terrible

Wait… isn’t this the one with that bizarre Easter egg in the real world home in the beginning where your fridge becomes filled with gore for some reason? I think you trigger it by opening and closing the fridge repeatedly IIRC.
I was disappointed by this game. F$&@ EA - they ruin everything! Ultima 9 was supposed to be the triumphant send off of the Avatar. Instead it was a rushed mess. Of course Garriot didn’t turn out to be a great guy either. Shroud of the Avatar was also a mess.

I respect the role the Ultima series played in paving the way for other RPGs to come along, but my god have these games not aged well...

I believe Wizardry is a bit older than Ultima, and then of course there's the old dungeon crawlers they had on university super computers in the 70s.
True but Ultima kind of defined the genre, whereas Wizardry ended up being more known for establishing it's own sub-genre. Both were of course pretty influential. I do want to check out Wizardry at some point though since I've never played that either.
@@TheCantinaChannel there are some recent remakes on Steam that are pretty good for experiencing old school Wizardry on modern systems, I'd start there if you're interested. A remake of 5, 6, and 7 would be amazing.

There are mods that make the carts move, at least in LE Skyrim. Kind of cinematic but takes time to travel so there is a fast travel button
I've seen those. They also tend to make the carts blast into space lmao

From the trifecta that is Might and Magic, Wizardry and Ultima, I have never played with the latter. Maybe it's for the best. 😀
Well, eggshualley... Ultima 9 is as amazing as it is goofy as hell.
And as someone who came from Ultima Online, there were so many similarities, I felt right at home. :)

This is the worst game by far which is a shame, the older ones are really cool if you can get into the archaic gameplay.
Please play Ultima 7 (and its excellent expansions). It's an amazing early open world RPG and just one of the most immersive games ever. Honestly, only Larian's Divinity Original Sin games and now BG3 have scratched the same itch as Ultima 7.

This game looks awesome
It is, or at least it was for an 11-14 year old me. I had some great times with this. Lovely dungeon crawls where you feel like you are never getting out, puzzles, different builds, magic, huge world with hidden secrets and just the general feeling of playing as a hero. Funny as hell too!
