One thing you didn't mention that I actually found really cool about this game was a mode that let you play as the bosses you've previously beaten. Playing as the Balrog was fun as heck since the AI doesn't heal so you can win in two turns with his AOE attack.
I was originally going to mention it but ended up cutting that part out
And funniest thing is that characters from this game show up as custom heroes in Battle for Middle-Earth II which is a very odd nod to the game lmao
My favorite character in this game is Eaoden. I love how he’s just like, this extremely random dude who doesn’t fit into LOTR at all and joins the party for no reason.
- He’s a horseman, but runs everywhere.
- He has weird magic powers that they don’t even try to explain. Even Elegost and Hadhod’s powers are at least somewhat lore-consistent.
- He has a theoretically OP passive that allows him to absorb magic, except you will never actually get it unless you obtain him at an extremely low level.
- He has the least plot relevance of any character, only existing to mention how Berethor fled from Osgiliath.
Also Hadhod = Chadhod.
I love how everyone has paper swords wrapped in tinfoil but the archer uses a full blown compound bow 💪🤣
Bro... Elegost (the bow guy) has multiple attacks in combat to delay enemy turns in the que and also put enemies to sleep. You can double up and use a move that allows Elegost to attack twice in his turn, basically delaying any enemy attacks while the rest of your team cleans house. Amazing video btw!
I haven't thought about this game since I beat it as a kid...totally remembered the story as something epic and awesome, not as goofy as this lol. Kids are easily pleased. I used to really love this one
I didn't know what game you were talking about at first, but man, I remember this game! It was actually this game that made me try FFX due to the two having similar combat systems!
I was replaying this game when the caps in my 360 exploded, was trippy. It slowly data moshed the game until it just quit
I remember this game had 2 player co-op But it was only in combat. When you were exploring only player 1 could play
ya I was disappointed the exploration was only 1 player
To be fair 1 player doing the exploring is how most co-op jrpgs work
And i think you didn’t even choose who you are playing, the game did.

This was the first turn-based jrpg I played. It took 17 years for me to play another one.
The "and why?" at the end of the video really sums up my thoughts about this game's design decisions.
I loved this game back in the day. I completed it a bunch of times, trying to get every piece of equipment. Once I'd done that, I decided it would be a fun idea to replay it using only the starter equipment for each character as a challenge.
I had this game on the Gamecube. I remember being very confused when the turn by turn combat showed up. But I grew to like it over time
Love this game! Bought like 50 ps2 games off a buddy 2 years back and this came with it. I played it obsessively till the end. Nice video buddy!
I played this game for 5 mins and thought "this isn't what I expected" and never played it again. Thank you for allowing me to finally find out what the game was like. It's really interesting that you spend the entire video being critical of the game (using your signature humour of course), but still love it anyway!
I loved this game as a kid. Years later I came back to the game and to see that my younger self never allocated the stat points. I had 200+ stat points

So I remember back in the day reading something about this game. It was supposed to be an RPG where you play as the members of the fellowship and it was supposed to playout the whole Lord of the Rings story, but they did not get the license to the characters and had to scrap it and instead they made these cheap knock-offs that we ended up with. Clearly because of this they had to redo the whole storyline as well and make something more "original" which is why it seems like it takes place in a different universe.
All i remember of it is that we were a knockoff fellowship following the actual fellowship. Quite the waste of 3 euros i paid in an ancient place where the elders use to rent games.
You know, the the intro reminded me of how in the books Boromir and Aragorn were both about to charge back to help Gandalf against the Balrog
This game is actually really good.
I remember one night that there was a PTA meeting and my grades very veeery bad. While I was expecting my parents to come back and rain hell and damnation over me I was just blasting through this game with the anticipation on mind.
Your intro about it being the dumbest and best LotR game is spot-on! This was absolutely one of my favorite games! I played it several times, on PS2 and xbox, and when I got my OG back-compatible PS3, one of the first things I did was start a new run of this game. This was actually my introduction to turn-based combat and JRPG mechanics and I loved it. It was fun finding new gear to improve my character and filling out the skill trees for each character.
Oh I had fond, and bad, memories from this game.
The good:
-Exploring Middle-Earth
-Good lore expansion through the scenes from Middle-Earth features
-The sound effects! Especially the Uruk-Hai screams and roars!
The bad:
-The Witch-King boss fight
Hard af!!!! Good lord!
-The Goblins of Moria
Annoying as Hell!!
Things that didn’t make sense:
-The boss fight against Sauron…WHEN HE’S BASICALLY THE GREAT EYE….ATOP BARAD-DÙR!!! WHAT?!
-The boss fight against Durin’s Bane…a Balrog Of Morgoth…A FALLEN MAIAR SPIRIT LIKE SAURON!!!! No seriously, WHAT?!?!
One of my favorite games as as kid. Loved the mode where you fought against the group too
This game, along with games like Jet set radio future and Overlord have always been top picks on my list of "Games that will never get a remaster but I would kill to get." This game given another pass through of quality control and dev time might be something even better.
I love how she is named "Morwen". The devs were probably like:
- "Quick, think of a LOTR name!"
+"Well, we've got Arwen and then there's Morgoth... so... Morwen?"
The name does exist tho, it appears in the Sillmarillion

I love this game! When I was a child I played with my dad on the Gamecube in coop and then, many years later, I played it with a friend (Summer 2019) again in coop, having a good and chill time with her and stuff. It's a game you can enjoy by just playing it with someone and just... chill. :D
Edit: A lot of story happens in Form of short Lore- and story videos with visual Film scenes narrated by Gandalf, that was actually immersive (as far as I remember). But it's also easy to just ignore those scenes. Aaaand it's the only JRPG Game I liked just because it's not in Animestyle and I enjoy lord of the rings. A lot.

The morwen romance made no fucking sense and was super shoehorned, idk wtf they were thinking, the elf romance was at least sort of interesting.

Elegost at a certain point became very OP and perfect for farming skills point. He can attack all ennemies at the same time with sleep arrows and the ennemies cannot wake up
Belathor was in the movies Boromir brother they met sam and frodo in the two towers after boromir’s death

Oh man this game, I remember playing it through a dozen or so times, the reason the games story sucks so much is they didn't have the rights to use anything but the movies, as the rights to the books were owned by Tolkiens estate and they weren't happy about something or other, so they couldnt reference any extended material or characters.
Also, the new game plus mode is especially hilarious as you get all the perfect gems from beating the eye and cane rolfstomp basically everything. I also agree 1000% about the characters morwen is hot trash, eleghost is hot trash, hadhod, idrial, and notboromir were the only ones who ever got use. God forbid you were forced to use the others.

Played it, thought "nah this is weird, i'm not playing it" continued playing, started liking it. Came back to it a month later... and got the famous PS2 screen of death, you know the one where you have the disc in, and it still tells you to insert a disc? Short story is, i got to play this for like one hour, roughly 8 years ago, and i'm still bummed out that i never got to play more... Never stopped thinking about how disappointed that made me feel. Like PS2 had great games, but I think people forget they only worked like 4% of the time XD
The Third Age was one of my favorite games on the PS2.

Another very broken strategy is a spell you can use that let's party members revive with full health and full AP! And you can cast it on the caster itself. It makes it impossible to lose. You just die, revive and cast the spell on yourself again.

I remember this from back in the day. They probably got a contract saying Do a rpg with Lotr license and when they could not get any ideas when brainstorming and decided let's just make a poor FFX clone and get paid.

Elegosts' greatest attack is so broken it can mostly cause an instant kill or take a huge chunk out of someone's HP

The Third Age is just Discount Lord of the Rings.
You have the bargain bin version of the fellowship. A story that might as well be fanfiction. Visible lack of time and energy after the first half. It's great.

Also FYI, you called Sauron's tower Orthanc, but that's Saruman's tower. Sauron's tower is Barad-dûr.
I lost it at the eye of Sauron fight. What the Heck XD what were the devs thinking
I got caught with a game locking glitch right at the end of the game. I tried to get my friend to help me and then also got his character locked behind a gate that wouldn't open. Sad times but I enjoyed the game enough to start again and play back through it. Got super nervous approaching the gates that glitched and wouldn't let me pass though, but thankfully I was let through and went on to beat the game. Also, check the other game LOTR War in the North that had Urgost the dragon. I wanted to smash him when I heard my friend wimp out of fighting him, but when I came across him... yeah... I bitched out also, I wanted no part in that fight at all.
I am so happy to see someone (especially you) take a look at this game. Despite all its flaws, Lord of the Rings: The Third Age is my favorite LOTR game hands down. Watching all of your videos on these games has been a serious trip down memory lane. Even more so than the ESO games; and that is probably because you're the only other person other than myself that I know of that knows of this game and has played it. LOTR 3rd Age truly feels like a unique and dumb but very satisfying experience. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this game.
I also would like to add that Berethor's special abilities inspired my "warrior" class in the table top game that I am creating.
Honestly, the hardest boss for me was the waves of trolls at helm's deep. Sauron was a piece of cake!

You forgot to mention the extra fanfic-y part where Berethor is revealed to have been stabbed by a Morgul Blade pre-game, and how does he respond to this knowledge? Just reaching into the wound and ripping it out! It's so dumb that it's glorious!

Such nostalgia but the game was just unfinished. Pieces of equipment sets missing, bugs, last two characters barely getting any stuff as you said, weirdly too many ability grinds that is almost impossible to unlock through the game’s short run time, the hilarious fact you walk from the pelennor fields to right in front Sauron’s eye. The base is there, a remake (fan remake because it’s less than unlikely any publisher would pick it up) would really do some good to this game.
Btw Berethor,Idriel,Hadhod and Morwen were reused as the default custom characters for the lord of the rings strategy games.
this game was really bad, but when playing berethor and using any of his shouts with the sfx would give me happy vibes, also Idril using her revive spell on every fight was a must for me because I had no fucking clue about decay as a kid
Elegost is in secret a maiar!!
He has one of the best spirit attacks in the game. Called: Northern Storm!
Combined with high spirit stats and a polished Elfstone of spirit/action,
Elegost can deal a massive amount of AOE damage.
if I play it again I really want to see what I can do with him.
The art in the game seems pretty dope thought. Spot on from the film.

Always bothered me how Elegost holds a sword in every cutscene but never uses one in battle.

I got this game on the game cube it's one of my favorites I go back and play it once a year
It's kinda like someone played ffx and watched LotR over a weekend and thought they would be cool combined.
That said iirc they were only allowed to use stuff that appeared in the movies, anything from the books alone was unlicensed
Imagine enjoying this game and finding out the evil campaign is locked by story progression.
I did like this game, had some nice unique mechanics.

Hey cantina! I really love this series of LOTR games but you haven't covered Lord of the rings war in the North? it is incredible for its time and just thinking about the times of playing local co op with my dad as a child makes me nearly shed a tear. I don't recall you ever saying you played it but it is 100 percent worth having a look at in 2022. Hope you see this and would love to see a video on it soon.

Also, I’m just curious as to how Morgul Decay works on the Eye of Sauron. Like, what is it’s armor? The hull of Barad-dûr? Do you just slather up the whole tower?
This was my first rpg so it felt difficult back when i was younger but it was really fun
The turn order is shown kinda like FFX I think, some inspiration there
I loved this game as a kid but found it so hard back then. I recently played it and still like it a lot but didn't realize how easy it could be if you level up your characters I never did that back then. Just go back fight now level orcs and get your abilities up lol but only to an extent it's not too easy but still a challenge at some parts.
I really enjoyed this game on my original XBox. I miss it.
