Oh my goodness my husband definitely pops things off like “this will be the best way to do it” with perfect confidence and immediately I’m like.... “okay, but why do you say that? Sources? MLA works cited please” 😂
I learned a shocking lesson when we moved to the country when my son was 2 yo. They are raised completely different out here and to my horror, we went back to the city as he turned 3 for a wedding. It was held at a HUGE church where people wore church clothes, real shoes (not boots) and dress jackets not button down cowboy shirts. After the service, we were all standing outside talking to old friends and as I looked at my son, we had his back to me while standing in front of a tree. Of course, he had to do this in front of the whole congregation. Country boys are so natural! But my 3 yo daughter had him beat. We went in town to a nice big box hardware where they sold flower boxes and fancy sinks instead of fence posts and cattle tanks. I was checking out and turned to see her sitting on the floor model toilet, pants down. I wasn't fast enough and will forever be mortified at what I saw in the bowl when I grabbed her. We sure were country come to town back then as I kept being reminded of all the things I wasn't teaching them. 50 years later it makes a great story but --.
We were at the back of the property working and we finally convinced my niece that a cider block was just an outdoor potty. She used that thing all day. There is 10 years between her and her sister. We were outside working and her sister needed to go potty and she took her over to a cinder block and was trying to convince her to go potty instead of going in the house. Apparently she felt if it was good enough for her as a kid it was good enough for her sister. She got over ruled since we were close to the house. She took her inside and we busted up laughing. Who knew cinder blocks made such great little kid port-a-potties.
I'm a mix up of both extremes. Research and perfection anxiety. Yet I am also "throw care to the wind" and "put the cart before the horse". It's always a surprise of which it will be today 😂
1000 times yes on your points on companion planting! It makes gardening too complicated and there is so much conflicting information out there, very little based on actual science. Just watch spacing, and light, nutrient and water requirements of different plants, that is all.
To everyone getting Carrots Love Tomatoes, don’t forget to get Roses Love Garlic too! Nothing like having bunches of pretty flowers and colors to look at in your garden when trying to companion plant.
I feel so encouraged by your videos!! We just bought our home and will be planting next spring once we can prepare our land....we will be watching and taking notes!! So much knowledge!
Hello from Northern Canada! Zone 7 - Pacific North coast rainforest. I am just getting my garden started now because the soil is finally thawed! Direct sowing a few seeds but starting my tomato, pepper, squash seedlings indoors. I find your videos so helpful, and after this video I feel more confident direct sowing a wider variety!
I have trouble sowing seed because we have an abundance of birds which like to snack on my seed. I swear the crows sit and watch me plant. Then come the next morning for breakfast. The last time I tried to direct sow I sat on my porch with a 22 rifle. Out of 5 rows 40 ft rows of corn. 2 rows of peas 2rows of Bush beans . I got maybe a dozen or so plants. So I just start everything in my greenhouse. But on a more positive note we don't get very many tomatoe or cabbage worms. Because the birds like to eat them also.💕💖❤💕💖❤
Thank you!! I needed to hear this! I’ve been holding off on planting, over worrying about getting something wrong. I haven’t had good success in the past 5 years but I won’t give up!
Can't wait to see fence project when complete. Good to hear Boys Playing. Your Garden is starting out great. The pigs are Cute. God Bless and Peace Be With You All ☮️🙏❣️
You are such an incredible mother, so loving and tender and I’m only a minute or two into the vlog and I am so happy to be here. I’m a Christian too and it’s such a breath of fresh air experiencing life with you through these videos. Your heart is needed in this world. I am planting my first garden this year. Last year it didn’t turn out so well. I moved from the north to the south and the climates are polar opposite. I’m gaining experience along the way and I found your channel last year but I’ve been lead back to your channel again. I gave up and felt pretty discouraged but I’m so thankful to listen to you and your vlogs. You give me hope and inspire me to try my very best and not to be so easily discouraged. I’m learning daily. I’m always learning but your channel gives me a new perspective and a clean state of mind. Thank you for being you and for allowing God to use you. You are having an eternal impact.... way more than you know. God bless you, sister in Christ.
My kids get completely squirrelly in the winter. If it snows they go out to play and we are all grateful. I'm looking forward to getting my next round of seeds started.
Awhhh... little boys, the world is their urinal! Lol! Thanks for sharing the peeing outdoors part. I laughed out loud because I raised 3 boys! Blessings to you all!
Ah I had just finished cooking my breakfast and this video was posted - perfect timing Jess! ;) :P I CAN'T WAIT to see what you guys do with the cottage garden - the fence posts look so promising!
Bought a handful of the Clydes growing guides and scattered them among my gardening friends. They all loved them. Neat tool and my wife is using the heck out of hers.
I CANNOT wait for conversations in the greenhouse this year! I’m super excited to see all your seeds in that large of a space! My brother is getting into stain glass making and I hope he makes me a black iris similar to yours!
Jess thank you so much for this video (I love all your videos) but I was getting so stressed about companion planting that I haven’t even wanted to start on my plot because of the overwhelming amount of information. I also just really want to concentrate on having a beautiful diverse garden that brings me joy. I love your farm and the message you spread! Lots of love from Austria :)
I planted borage in my garden many years ago, I've never planted it since but I've got lots of borage in my garden as it self-seeds everywhere. My bees love it.
Omg, my pet peeve too, but in general. People love to speak in black and white, when most things are several shades of gray. I think gray areas take more effort to be comfortable with, and some people don't appreciate that. I appreciate your presentation of facts and thoughts.
Ur kids are funny. My nephew also tries to imitate my goats, but he can’t “warble” his voice yet so he shakes his head back and forth and goes very confidently “I can speak goat. They say FEED ME” which I can’t argue with 😂😂😂
I always used to say that God showed his love to homeschool moms by giving them a sunny day that’s warm enough to play outside at least once a week during the winter 😂.
I planted basil as a companion plant for my tomatoes. I had 100 percent no horn worms... except I had a hornworm on my American cranberry bush that is planted a lot further away that the basil and tomatoes.
Oooo girl! Thank you for this info. We just got our beds built and filled, so the next step is planting. Needless to say, as a first year gardener, I was getting a little to caught up in all this. There is already so many factors to take into account before adding in companion planting. I've watched SO many videos, and really enjoy yours.. I hope all grows well for all us gardeners this year!!!!
I bought borage seeds for the first time this year I'm really excited to start growing it. I read a lot about it. I like the fact that it sucks up a lot of nutrients. Apparently it grows a deep taproot. You can put it in your compost pile eventually. I also read that you can make a liquid fertilizer out of it. So it has many uses.
Thank you for this. The "rules" that you are constantly overwhelmed with when you are a newbie gardener make gardening seem like a nearly impossible task that should only be attempted by professionals.
I’m a throw it all together and see what happens gardener. In one of my 4’x4’ beds I have 2 types of tomatoes, cabbage, banana peppers,, radishes, white globe zucchini, and romaine lettuce and everything seems to be thriving just fine even in Florida. I can’t handle making things perfect, I just cram things in where ever I have a open space and let God handle the rest.
Jes this is Ada Seale Lufkin,Texas. I got 4 bags of soil at Sam's in Lufkin, Texas yesterday. A young man employee of Sam's helped me and I shared with him about your You Tube Channel Roots and Refuge. He seemed very interested and said he was going to check your Channel out!!!! I was so excited about that❤🌹
You are lucky to get the variegated borage....last I checked she was out. Can’t wait to see how yours do. You have taught me so much! From someone who hated to garden to loving every moment I can get out there.......thank you!
You are SUCH an inspiration! This is year two of my garden, and I tried to start a couple things from seed. I realize now I was woefully unprepared and uneducated about starting from seed and have been feeling down about it -- AND overwhelmed by not knowing where to plant things and what to plant them with etc. Your videos are so real. I only hope I can be like you when I grow up.:D
Do you feed all those Hornworms and bugs to the chickens?Jess I am super excited..I have sent two types of very very rare bean seeds unique to the area I reside...both with history..to yes BAKER CREEK for study and field trials, hopefully they will be some that can be passed on to generations, I talked to Martin Marsh. Super nice guy a busy guy.
We have two sons who have been raised in the country too and my husband taught them how to “water the flowers “ well. Our daughter well she can’t go outside to save her life even though her entire life has been living in the country. On another note I have direct sown in my garden already (we live in the Sonoran Desert) and I have one variety of lettuce up already (I planted four varieties) and a couple stalks of asparagus up too. I am using your cattle panel idea as an arch over a portion of my asparagus bed to create shade for my lettuce and help keep it from bolting as soon hopefully. I planted gourds to trellis on the panel. Btw I discovered two panels in the back corner of our property and was excited because I didn’t have to spend any money on them.
18 degrees today and I wore a long dress and a hoodie out. Tennis shoes. It was cold but not cold like windy cold can be that stuff will get right in your bones.
Blood curdling screams. LOL! I haven't met a kid, yet that didn't love to scream at the top of the lungs when outside. We had a little girl that lived down the street that would stand outside and just let out the most terrifying screams. Nothing wrong, everything is good, but Ima gonna scream to my heart's content. lol.
I built my first raised bed with my son today. My son can get some aged horse compost dirt to feel it. I'm excited to see how this will work out for me. I'm planning using
I could never direct sow for spring in Southern Minnesota. We go from freezing cold to hot. I have 3 feet of snow in my garden. Sigh. But I have noticed we don't have the pests warmer zines have. I have never had a pest ever in my garden after having a garden for 15 years. PS 4 boys with 11 snow days in 1 month last winter. I so get it. 50 is shorts weather. We also get over 100 in Minnesota.
Thank you for getting this info out about companion planting! There is one Pinterest chart out there that say don't plant x next to y. Then, down at line y, it says to plant with x. 😂
Just ordered my Clydes Chart! I’m also in 7B and am just so excited to start building my raised beds. My seedlings are under grow lights and I hope to have the beds done way before the seedlings are ready to plant. Thanks for your continued efforts at giving all of us such awesome information, motivation AND confidence to be self sustainable. You guys are AWESOME!
I do a trifecta of Marigolds, Nasturtiums, and Borage. When I plant all three? I rarely have hornworm troubles. I often stuff them in wherever I can amongst the garden as they offer benefits to the whole garden(and the Gardener as the visuals are eye candy).
I'm reading a book on companion planting right now (mainly just to learn about different beneficial and edible flowers). A very interesting fact I learnt from it is that plants want to grow close to other 'native to them' plants - if you plant something like tomatoes and peppers in a bed with basil, they will all do better together than if they were in separate beds because they all thrive in the Mediterranean. so growing then together make them "feel at home" and thrive even in colder countries.
Regarding your cold weather, I’m from Minnesota and 50 in humid southern states feels so much colder than 50 degrees here ⛄️ we recently spent a cold cloudy rainy “vacation” in Florida felt COLDER than it would be in Minnesota at 50 degrees. I wore a winter jacket with layers most of the time. I feel your pain! ⛄️⛄️⛄️
47 is a heat wave ! Lol That's awesome hat and scarf . I am putting fox pee to keep away bunnies but read that pee from humans is also perfect so the boys are helping guard the yard of predators . Love the copper roof !!!
Wow look at that new fencing. And I am still in love with your greenhouse. Bear is such a sweet boy. We are doubling are garden space and would love to triple it. We have made new raised beds etc. I can’t wait till we can get our greenhouse built. My children are homeschooled so when it has been raining a lot or to cold they get cabin fever and act crazy too. Your such a inspiration to our channel and our family. Thanks for sharing your life with us. 🍅🌶🥕🥦
I always love your videos, but especially when the slow trickle of sweet music pops up in the background. After a long day of work it settles me and gives me peace- Thanks!👍
You are SO REAL...love it,and the no dig garden..... a follower of Charles Dowding also one I follow......thanks for all of the great and real information and sharing your ,precious family ...we had seven in house at one time and yes life was NEVER DULL, and our house was always filled with their friends as well...have a blessed week ahead and again thank you for your commitment and time for us all.
This video was so helpful. Companion planting stresses me out. I had someone tell me one year when I was battling the first hornworms that I had ever seen in my 12 years of gardening, to plant marigolds. So I did my little bit of research and set out to seed the most gorgeous marigolds. I had them as a border in the garden and down a few rows. I'll never be convinced that the they didn't BRING pests to my garden lmao I have never dealt with squash bugs, cucumber beetles and whatever else was out there.....until those darned marigolds. Never again lol
Enjoy what you share and do....I have learned a wealth of tips and information....Thank You!! ..and sharing a simple moment of reality of life in your day....grins and laughter....priceless !.....Love seeing the family And the animals......Great start to my day.........Again,,Thank You........Stay Safe and God Bless.......
I'm one of those companion planting "rule" followers. Or I have been. It's been stressful indeed. Lol! I became a believer because of watching my own cabbages & tomatoes. Their rows were perpendicular and the closer they got to one another the smaller they were. I became a companion planter and have been careful & miserable ever since! And I'm not sure I have been a whole lot benefited, at all. I would have to do all the "holds" to prove it to myself now, because I'm as of now going to attempt to throw caution to the wind and turn over a new leaf! Thanks, Jessica!
Here in Sc I planted parsley and dill around my tomatoes and usually horn worms are everyone but I only found two because they preferred the dill over the tomatoes. Idk if it’s a perfect plant but it’s worked well for me.
I love growing with pro mix. I have tried to switch from it but I always go back cuz the results are just.... like I feel like it make it easy for the plants and is most comfortable for them lol
I get so excited when a notification pops up.I found myself lol with you and answering you. Thanks for sharing your wealth of knowledge on this subject🦋 Lol....12:00pm 30 degrees here in CT. The baby pigs are adorable. Outdoor peeing.. yep understand about having to remind the boys...and I don’t live in the country 😌Blessings
I'm rewatching this is 2021! I had brassica seeds (Japanese giant red mustard and ragged jack/red Russian kale) over winter in the "polar vortex" when it got down to -20F and tons of rain and snow this winter.
My sister in law is from Wales and before she moved out here to San Diego she laughed at us for being cold in 60° F. Now that she’s lived here 6 years she gets cold in 60° weather. It’s all about acclimation
Oh my gosh thank you for this!! This is my first garden and I resorted to a SPREADSHEET to keep track of all the diverse info - straight up contradictions in some cases. You’re the best!!
I used book. Carrots love tomatoes. You also have to consider root toxicity. Certain plants produce root chemicals that defend their area from other plants growing near them.
Hahah! I can’t even count the amount of times we’ve been at church and I look over and my son is just peeing in the grass or a tree if there is one:) And my two year old daughter just gave you a kiss lol she loves watching your boys and the animals:)
Thank you! I have been saying that for years about companion planting. So much out there confusing people that believe everything they read online. Great video! I haven’t heard of the variegated borage, will check that out. The girls love the white and blue borage.
Minnesota gets temps of 100 plus humidity in summers too! We just also get wind chills of -45 sometimes. Lol I absolutely loved your thought on if you plant the seeds you may or may not get something, but if you don't plant the seeds you're guaranteed to not get anything.
Can I just comment about what a wonderful husband you have? He wants his wife to be happy and goes so far to make sure that happens, he works and then he toils on 'the homestead', what a lucky girl you are.
Thank you for this,I come from farmers,we always planted from life experience and facts, nowadays everybody's an expert due to social media, your channel is a treasure🍄
Thanks for a great video! I was directed to your channel by Lazy C Homestead and even though currently I'm in South Dakota, I own 5 acres right near Pencil Bluff, AR. I'll be heading that direction around the end of April to mid May to start clearing the wild land. Yes, by myself. We'll see how it works out but it's awesome to listen to someone in the same grow zone!
Jess, I'm with you on your companion plant comments. Also saw your video on seedlings and row covers, but didn't see you emphasize pest prevention. About hornworms and and borage and row covers - Borage will get you pollinators, but row covers will prevent hornworms. This worm and several others (pickelworm, melonworms, etc.) are the larvae of nocturnal moths. Cover your plants with row covers at night and prevent the moth from laying eggs on your plants in the first place.
You'll like the pro mix more and more, great product! 👍 And I wholeheartedly agree to step away from pinterest!!! Companion planting is so variable, jump in and give things a try and have fun mixing it up.
Everything is relevant to what you're used to. Living in zone 10 I'm in snow pants and a parka when it gets below 60 (not even joking). Glad you're enjoying the day despite the cold. Be well :o)
When my Grandson was of the age to be potty trained, he wanted no part of it. I was playing with him in the yard and saw him squirming and I said "Cole you have to pee? Pee on that tree"! Pretty much that did the trick and my Daughter was very grateful, till he took a dump in the front yard! Cole is now about to turn 24! ❤
You and your family are adorable! Don’t feel bad about needing the jacket at 50. I’m in AZ and am freezing at anything under 70. I just started really (like actually researching and reading) learning to garden this season, so far I’m not killing all my baby plants like prior attempts. 🙌🏻 But it’s the desert and only in the 60’s this week, so there’s still plenty of time for me to screw up... 🤦♀️🤷🏼♀️
Great topic! Vining veggies fall into that weird black hole of companion planting as well. It's not that they cross pollinate its just they take up so much room. Bravo Jess. P. S. I swear kids need their own heated play house in the barnyard. 😉
I agree on the companion planting information Jess...I just use common sense - like you said look at the obvious likes and dislikes of each plant. It's not a sink or swim kind of mentality. 👍🏊♀️😁
My husband is very high I, and I’m very high S & C so we totally get it. Knowing that we achieve our goals through such different means really helps us understand each other. Have you guys done Myers Briggs, Enneagram, etc? He’s ENFP, I’m INFP. He’s a 9 and I’m a 6
I would LOVE a video on how to lay out/plan your garden beds. I’m having analysis paralysis.
Oh my goodness my husband definitely pops things off like “this will be the best way to do it” with perfect confidence and immediately I’m like.... “okay, but why do you say that? Sources? MLA works cited please” 😂
Megan Rankin MLA works cited ❤️😂
MLA!!!😆

This so funny.

@@heathersumner4497 That is funny and true- creative use of building supplies! LOL
I love borage for the bees! They pay SO much attention to the plant/blossoms that they don't even care that I'm around them :)
“Ahhh cute!” That’s my exact feeling when I see the seed babies
I'm a mix up of both extremes. Research and perfection anxiety. Yet I am also "throw care to the wind" and "put the cart before the horse". It's always a surprise of which it will be today 😂
Same same lol 🤷🏼♀️💜
I find myself checking my phone all the time to see if you've posted yet, because it uplifts my day so much to watch your videos ❤
1000 times yes on your points on companion planting! It makes gardening too complicated and there is so much conflicting information out there, very little based on actual science. Just watch spacing, and light, nutrient and water requirements of different plants, that is all.
It’s a REAL problem for us here in MN when the kids get cooped up inside for weeks and weeks.
To everyone getting Carrots Love Tomatoes, don’t forget to get Roses Love Garlic too! Nothing like having bunches of pretty flowers and colors to look at in your garden when trying to companion plant.
great advice!

Public places is an important distinction 🤣 I am bursting with excitement for this garden season!
I companion plant with marigolds. It looks beautiful and really does deter the harmful insects.
Ur kids are funny. My nephew also tries to imitate my goats, but he can’t “warble” his voice yet so he shakes his head back and forth and goes very confidently “I can speak goat. They say FEED ME” which I can’t argue with 😂😂😂
Lol me and my kiddo just watched little shop of horrors and I was getting that feed me vibe from the goats too lol.
Sounds like my cat at 430in the morning MMMMMMMMU FEED ME
I always used to say that God showed his love to homeschool moms by giving them a sunny day that’s warm enough to play outside at least once a week during the winter 😂.

Nothing wrong, everything is good, but Ima gonna scream to my heart's content. lol.
LMAO! My daughter walks out the front door and screams "ECHO". She tries inside, but no one understands what she's screaming. (She's 3)
I built my first raised bed with my son today. My son can get some aged horse compost dirt to feel it. I'm excited to see how this will work out for me. I'm planning using
Yes! They go bananas if they don't get enough outdoor activity! Plus bedtime is so much easier even they've been outside.
I hear ya. We just moved from Northern MN to NC. It's a whole different world in Zone 7b.
I dehydrate the borage greens and add them to teas and soups. flowers as teas as well.
Yes! We've not been able to go outside a ton this week and it has been difficult!
Canadian girl here, and I'd often put on a toque and jacket at that temp, too. I really dislike being cold.
I got my garden planner when they restocked and I am so happy
Can you do an update on the beet cluster sowing? I want to try it as well.
I do a trifecta of Marigolds, Nasturtiums, and Borage. When I plant all three? I rarely have hornworm troubles. I often stuff them in wherever I can amongst the garden as they offer benefits to the whole garden(and the Gardener as the visuals are eye candy).
I love the fact you named one of your goats Ross Poldark!!
Aaah the old OUT HOUSES, things of the past, thanks for all you share. BLESSINGS 👍 👍
I got a Roots and Refuge garden chart and it's going to really help me this year so I'm glad you told us about them.
Lol
That's awesome hat and scarf .
Plant basil plants for horn worms.....it works!! the worms love the basil more and the tomatoes and hummingbirds really love the basil blooms
Oh my I am crying with laughter about all your boys and not catching them peeing on things in your shots 😂
STICKERS! jacket when it is 50 degrees? lol Everything is soo opened up. Thanks for sharing.
Hahah! I can’t even count the amount of times we’ve been at church and I look over and my son is just peeing in the grass or a tree if there is one:)
And my two year old daughter just gave you a kiss lol she loves watching your boys and the animals:)
Lol
I absolutely loved your thought on if you plant the seeds you may or may not get something, but if you don't plant the seeds you're guaranteed to not get anything.
Jess, I understand you pain. I have 3 grandsons, a son, and a husband running around, but I'm not trying to film. You made me laugh out loud. Thanks!
I love my Clydes planner. No idea how I did my garden without it
Borage is good medicine. Anti-inflamatory, good for cough in a tea or inhaling steam.
You'll like the pro mix more and more, great product! 👍
And I wholeheartedly agree to step away from pinterest!!! Companion planting is so variable, jump in and give things a try and have fun mixing it up.
Everything is relevant to what you're used to. Living in zone 10 I'm in snow pants and a parka when it gets below 60 (not even joking). Glad you're enjoying the day despite the cold. Be well :o)
My blue borage sometimes puts off a purple/pink bloom but the white and variegated varieties sound great!
got my Clyde's Garden Planner the other day and it is very helpful ...ty for sharing this information.
