Surefire 640DFT is an 18650 battery, not quite sure exactly what you are referring to when you say surefire does not dable in the 18650 world. I know their vampire heads only fit on the 600/300 series of bodies currently which is unfortunate. I feel you on the cloud defensive lights. awesome lights its just a shame there is like no support for switches and its not NVG friendly.
I’ll have to check that one out. Most the lights my buddies run aren’t. Not sure I’ve seen a Surefire 18650 in person or while I was browsing lights. I’ll have to look into the 640DFT. Are you running that?
I need some help deciding on a weapon light for my Daniel Defense DDV7. The primary build purpose is home defense, with a focus on close-to-medium range. For optics, I’ve installed standard front and rear iron sights, along with a Primary Arms SLX 1X MicroPrism Scope (Green Illuminated ACSS Cyclops Reticle Gen II). On the rail, I’ve added an Indexer M-Lok and an Offset Scout Mount M-Lok for a weapon light, but I haven’t settled on a specific light yet. I’m considering an Arisaka light kit or light body, but there are so many options that I’m finding it a bit overwhelming to choose the best one, I’ve also looked at surefire and cloud defense again I feel that they both have their pros and cons and also different price points. Some of the setups I’ve looked at are quite expensive, so I’m wondering: 1. Is Arisaka worth the price? 2. Is there a comprehensive guide online that explains the different Arisaka light options, including the various caps and configurations, to help narrow down my choice? Any advice or insights would be greatly appreciated!
For your use I think the Arisaka is a great option. The 18650 body coming in at only $50 is great starting point build out a solid light. I use a Modlite OKW head which has good throw to reach out to 100 yards or so. For your use you may want to check out Malkov light heads to find something that accommodates closer to Medium range. But also unclear what your medium range is? I spend fair amount of time in woods and fields so being able to light up 100+ yards is handy and light also works in CQB setting. In close quarters though that kind of out put can also splash back a bit. I dragged heels for years before jumping into the weapon mounted light setups so 100% understand your hesitation. My first was a Cloud OWL and from their I jumped into the Cloud Rein series. Reason for doing a Modlite/Arisaka build out for this setup is try something different and because of recently quality concerns I've seen with Cloud. Additionally after getting a Modlite handheld awhile back I now have a collection of heads to support the buildout and different head options for different needs. As far as a guide I have unfortunately not seen one myself. My buildout was based off feedback from buddies I podcast with and others I shoot with. Tailcap if you want a backup switch the Surefire DS00 is the way to go. If you don't care for backup switch or consistent on I'd get the standard Surefire cap. The Arisaka body is cheaper then the Modlite body so a little bit of savings to be had there and sits closer as well. From there it is finding mount to accommodate mounting to your handguard and light head that fits your needs. With Black Friday saves coming up Modlite tends to have some great prices for their holiday sales. Hope that helps a bit. Keep sending questions as you come up with them and I'm glad to help out.
@ that was extremely helpful! Yeah, the part that was really confusing me was the Arisaka light kit is truly a build your own light, which I think is awesome but the amount of options you can choose from I had to write them down so that I can look up each one to see what they are and what they do however once again I do appreciate your feedback.
The options are overwhelming for sure. I had to do the same of writing down the different options and weighing which ultimately fit the needs/wants from this build. After doing this one though I have greater understanding but still much to learn myself.
I Have almost every Modlite from 18650/18350 to there PDW light to there Pistol lights, even the red light heads I grabbed on a super sale. Im also a Huge fan of Reptilia's bodies with the integrated mount I own about 4 of them. I recently got a cloud defensive rein 3.0 from OP sale in grey and Im very underwhelmed to say the least. The light is not that bright, the tape switch sucks and the body itself is huge. Wont be buying any more cloud its Modlite all the way for me at least. I purchased the driven arms co switch mount for the cloud which is basically an HRF ramp for a Cloud 3.0 switch. It helps a little with ergo but again still very underwhelming compared to Modlite
I was eyeing the Reptilia mounts for a bit. My clouds brightness is in line with or brighter than my Modlite. Interesting to hear your experience isn’t the same.
This is almost exactly what I’ve been wanting to build just with a different tape switch
What switch are you eyeing?
Modlite means modular light
Surprised you didn’t go with Unity Tactical’s Gas Cap for your tail cap.
It was an option for sure. I find it kind of odd they did the Gas Cap in polymer.
This makes me want to spend a lot of money and build another lol
If you do, the USB-C tailcap is much better than the DS00. I have like 8 DS00. If I could afford to switch them all, I would.
@@InkwellFotoI’m curious about the USB-C. Maybe I’ll need to test one 🤷🏻♂️
Unity gadcap is the shit. Also modlite sells switches with 4.5" wire, which makes it easy to cable manage

@ yes sir, it’s 100,000 candela and I forget how many lumens but it’s a pretty good light and it comes with the newer pro series of mounts
640 DFT is the king for sure if cloud doesn't fit your needs

Ya'll love wasting money. You can get amazing aliexpress lights for $30. Test them all you want, they work perfectly fine.
I prefer my lights not to be a fire hazard.
Not one of those Ali express lights puts out any candela 🫠
@@TooManyChoices1 I wonder how long they even last in comparison to lights designed to handle recoil.
