You hit my creative objectives to the T, although the cat point isn't by design, that's *her* perogative 😂. Methodology is something i strive for, mostly so people can skip through and hit the major points, but also so the video doesn't stray too much. You know what? I'm a guitarist and I really enjoying exploring sounds (from acoustic to electric, to synth sounds). I don't have an SP404, but after watching this video I really think that I'm going to go out and get one and try to integrate it into my guitar playing! Really inspiring video, Thankyou so much for your time!
Wow this is high quality content. Nicely shot video, tightly edited, cute cat, how does this only have 34K views?! Also, the fact that I don't even own a SP-404 and you've got me hooked to this video is a testament to how good you are at content creation.
I really appreciate that! Alas, I don't cater to the youtube algorithm so unfortunately the viewcount will stay low. But I'm very glad to have reached you and the other people who have seen it. The videos are boutique and tailor-made, and a real passion project! But they pay off in a number of ways, so I'm very grateful not to chase after monetization or big growth.
Thank you so much for your intuitive and extensive long form video. I know it's alot of work to get these out. I always enjoy the longer form videos in a world of 30 sec doses of crammed info. I feel like I just left a class or workshop after seeing this. Thank you sir.
that's exactly my goal. I think a lot of people enjoy long-form vids and the scientific process was a fun way to structure this one. I'm hoping to do more like this coming up! Feel free to subscribe if you want to get notified~
As someone new to the sp-404 world this was a very interesting and informative video. Keep up the good work brother, I love hearing someone talk about a topic they have clearly thought a lot about.
Great video. How to organise pads and how to jam with samples are topics that are not well covered. Great food for thought regarding a current project. Using the MK2 mind.
Hey man, keep seeing you pop up here and on Reddit, really appreciate this guide as I’m slowly getting back into music (and brand new to using the SP-404). This is a cool broad methodology for sampling in general, disciplined but leaving yourself plenty of flexibility. Thanks for putting this together!
Hey glad! Reddit's been a great spot to share. My first vid did great because r/synthesizers got ahold of it. But I'm honored to see some people really subscribing and digging in. Hope it serves you well~
This video helped me a lot!! Thank you very much for this extremely useful experiment! As a 404 user, I feel like I found what I was looking for! Big :)
Dude, thank you so much for all the work you put into the video (eg your experiment 😉), this is soooo helpful! I am a hobby electronic musician and love to play as live as possible. My current setup involves a TR8 and a Synth using the Delay as a looper or somtimes adding a looper. But now i will try the sp404. Thanks for sharing
I used to be in a band that often wanted to jam, so learning how to fit in with an SP was often met with a lot of trial and error. This video reminds me a lot of those days, and I even picked up a few tricks watching this video. You've earned a new subscriber today. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Great video, commenting for the algorithm, more people need to see that. Also, shout out to the city it was shot in, Chengu is one of the three most beautiful cities I've ever been to.
I play live with other musicians using Samplr on the iPad and I sample live the other musicians this way I do not have to worry about key if I decide to do some kind of looping I make sure every one can hear me then I tap the tempo in then beat match to the other musicians then I keep the time. It’s important to discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the instrument you are using with the musicians you are playing with regardless of whether it’s an electronic instrument or not but once everyone understands the characteristics of the instrument jamming comes much easier.
I don’t have an SP, but what I took from this was an inspiring approach to sampling in general, and how to make it fun and musical when working with live players. Nice work!
@@yukesmusic I would love that haha, luckily I still have it on PC :) Really sick video btw, the whole live electronic jam session idea is really cool to me. What a wonderful, inspiring video, great style, many useful tips, great editing! And most important for me: very authentic and symphathetic. Thanks for your effort :)
First time at your channel. 1:23 caught me off guard. American jazz musician in China! Love it. Something I always daydreamed about. Haven’t been there since 2004.
I played an improvised thing with two other musicians, got on stage, made an impulsive choice to change the memory banks on sp404sx not remembering it takes 15mins to load a new memory bank. Stood there just waiting, best contribution I've ever done!
Greetings from Sweden. I just got an MKII and I am in love like I have never been, this thing and me, we click in a special way. I was mostly just buying gear then heading back to Korg Gadget for a long time but this thing feels like the missing part and I didn’t even buy it for most of the cool things I have come to love about it. You have some rather interesting content. Thanks for sharing!
I really appreciated this walk-through from the perspective of a live performing musician like yourself. It made me see the SP-404 MKII and live jamming in general in a different perspective. I've never been in these situation and consider myself a bedside producer, so I can't even imagine how it would be like to improvise on the spot along with another musician you haven't even rehearsed with before. I guess that works better for certain genres, but it sounds stressful to me. And fun! 😊
That's a sub for me, mainly because you don't have millions of cuts to string together a sentence. you'd think youtubers would try to actually talk in paragraphs, but its rare honestly
That means a lot, thank you. I do put some serious time into the script and use a teleprompter. I assume that most RUclipsrs go off bullet points and just wing it, leading to a long editing process where they trim off all the fat and get a choppy video. I'm still stuck in the old school
Thanks for all this lessons we can learn from your experimentation. Now my goal is to come and jam in Chengdu ! It seems beautiful and damn you're inspiring !
Wow, great! Y'know this is more for live improv but if you get some use out of it, great! Considering doing another video about how to use it to accompany other instruments

Thank you so much~ I'm in the final stage of editing my next video, and your comment (amongst the others' today) was a nice motivational push forward. Glad it was an entertaining watch!
I agree with not leaving any pads empty when you're improvising live, but also, friends, if you hit that empty pad, YOU MEANT TO . Enjoy the pause in whatever didn't just happen, and go back in when it sounds good. Don't yell "AWW SHIT!" and stumble your way back in. Maybe even learn to love those surprise rests.
Oh yeah def, no one will know you made a mistake unless you acknowledge it. Or do the pro move & repeat it a few times to change it into something intentional! Excellent video, thank you for your effort! I play exclusively live & improvised, I have a bigger setup of electronic instruments that midi sync to each other, so I really enjoyed this video. My most important learning thus far jamming has been that you should have it clear what the purpose of each instrument or voice in your setup should be (in your case with the SP404 the purpose of your banks). The other one is to have a set of sounds, a sound palette so to speak, that you stick to and experiment with in different settings. With the exception of my analog mono synths that have no patch memory and no midi control, I’ll stick to the same sounds on each instrument for weeks, sometimes months and see what I can come up with from session to session…consistency in and familiarity with sound palette allows for more confident and creative improvisation & composing on the fly…so pretty similar to what you did with your cards here, in particular the Kiwi Card. Awesome stuff, liked & subscribed!

This video is incredible. So helpfull and fascinating to watch. Trying to decide to invest into the SP404 way, and this video helps a lot! (in a YES way)
Hey have you heard of late of the pier, they have a Akai Mpc1000 player who uses it in the same way you describe as in the video. I guess it might be a bit different thought cause it might be a bit more planned out. Anyway, I find it as a very under the radar and unique thing to bring to a live event. Great Video!!!
It would be interesting to see you try this with the mk2. You could use its built-in chromatic keyboard mode to save a lot of space I would imagine. Great video !
About needing multiple SD cards, couldn't you just Funct-3 import banks in order to switch projects as the music demands? That would be kind of slow in a live environment, but if let's say you have an intermission it's pretty doable.

subscribed, this is a dope video. great stuff man
Thank youuuu~ next one comes out soon!
This video is incredible. So helpfull and fascinating to watch. Trying to decide to invest into the SP404 way, and this video helps a lot! (in a YES way)
That's great to hear~ best of luck on your SP404 journey, whether it's a mkII or a older gen like this one!
Thank you sensei. Great advice.
It would be interesting to see you try this with the mk2. You could use its built-in chromatic keyboard mode to save a lot of space I would imagine. Great video !
Oh yeah, a MkII would be a complete rework of this ideas, as well as my other ones.
Awesome vid and really inspired me to join the SP404 clan 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Welcome to the thunderdome!
working on a double po33 live setup so this was really helpful thankyou... want to basically master this idea with even cheaper gear
About needing multiple SD cards, couldn't you just Funct-3 import banks in order to switch projects as the music demands? That would be kind of slow in a live environment, but if let's say you have an intermission it's pretty doable.
Just watching a few minutes and can tell this is better content than like 98% of RUclips shit
I love small channels
Yo these SP videos are incredible man! Thank you for this!
Givin back to a community which brought me up! Happy to help how I can
