Im mexican , and since I was a little girl my parents always like USA, always talk good.bout. americans, on my experience my son was born here in USA, all I can say is that now that I know doctors and firefighters and police offivers who actually take care of their people and its country , Americans should be proud of their heroes no matter if they saved her or not ....... in mexico the police officers and so on arent that prepared so professionally ...... I wish we had these kind of heroes in mexico so be proud of them !!!!!

Humility? Seriously??!? This is the blatant and obvious definition of arrogance and hubris. This asshat thinks God chose him for some kind of action. Action that turned out to be FUTILE ANYWAY.
God chose him... Lol It's a monumental display of arrogance.

      "You are a sad person"
You have no idea who or what I am. How are you going to judge me as a person based on one logically-based comment? You are arrogant too. You are arrogant to think you can summarize my character based on a single comment.
Here's a fun fact. You can't. I bet you are just projecting your life onto me. I am a really happy, outgoing caring person. I am charitable and try to help my fellow man.
But I also call out bullshit when I see it. And you, sir, are full of it.

T-J was the key - she had it under control, which in turn set the tone for the entire action grouping all round. Powerful stuff, and extremely inspirational. Perhaps T-J’s steely and calm Prof behaviour just found its way everywhere, which made it such a great action collective. Superbly executed. Far reaching...and everlasting in many ways.

Wow, I can't believe how many people here in the comments are using this opportunity to disrespectfully bash this man for his faith and to promulgate whatever pet theory they themselves have about spirituality and God's existence. Regardless of what you may or may not believe, this is not the place to let it out in a crappy little heap on the head of someone who has just done what he did, simply because he himself believes that God helped him. Like, seriously, there's a time and a place and this not it.

Its what Atheist do. Atheist attack other people of other religions. Hell, look at what the Atheist did to people of faith once that got all the power in the Soviet Union. Most Atheist sadly are bigots. They seek to destroy religion, brain wash those he practice religion, muzzle people who openly speak of their religion. When people go to church, they say prayers and worship their God. When atheist gather for a meeting, convention, etc, they spend their time attacking other people who don't share their beliefs.

To understand this man one must know where he comes from. A very isolated small town in Texas, Celine it is called. Usually, in those towns, their only distraction is to go to church on Sundays, which afford people the opportunity to listen the Gospel and after the service, to mingle together. We must understand they are not contaminated with the ideas of progress of urban areas, which by the way, turn people into bad apples.

I totally agree with this mom. God prepared their hearts for what was to follow in days to come. God permitted them to be on that plane that day. To those saying that God caused this to happen is a very untrue accusation. God prepared for the rescue of this woman. Sometimes allow certain things to happen, although it’s not his will. It was southwests fault for not keeping their engines up to date and on top performance
Thank God for all the other lives that were saved that day. .

Dom_90 • You know God isn't to be referred to as a she, as you're trying to get attention with that. Don't know where you get your info, but it's certainly not Biblical. God, in His omniscient omnipotence, does know the future, but it's completely changeable because we have choices and free will. He loves us as His children and sacrificed His own Son to save you and me and even the worst terrorist or child abuser. Yes, all because He loves us that much. The "god" you're referring to is satan the devil who is the god of this world and loves it when he knows he has people like you in his grip. Get down on your knees and confess to Christ before it's too late! He will loose the chains that bind you. You'll taste the freedom you've never known. If you're born again, you'll be assured your place in Heaven where there's no pain, no mourning, no more crying. Read the gospel of John in the Bible to start with. That tells you who Jesus is, and go from there to dig into the Good Book and discover it's treasures. God loves you so much. Overcome! Because the wages of sin is death.

( that he somehow knows is traveling alone w/ the baby) checks in w/ his wife and - after all that - finally heads for the back of the plane to be Mr. Hero... I guess it took quite a while for that woman to get sucked out the window. Do you people really believe this! wake up. BTW - he fogot to mention the extreme cold that must have occurred with the window missing at that altitude and the overwhelming ear pain that must have occured because of the loss of pressure.

This is a bit tough to hear. While we all should deeply appreciate the braveness and courage of firefighters (or all professional first responders in that respect) for all that they do to save people's lives in situations where they risk their own lives, Mr. Needum's response to this emergency situation is equally as commendable as that of any other first responder on that plane - trained or untrained - who did the right thing. And he says that, he doesn't pretend to be a better human being than anyone who is ready, willing and able to do his or her part in trying to prevent injury, pain and avoidable suffering from happening to those who are in need. The world desperately needs this kind of humanity being bestowed upon us all - instead of peple who indulge in livestreaming their dispair which is to no help whosoever and who make all things just about themselves. What gets me though is the frequent reference of how God was involved in a - presumably, but we will have to wait for the results of the NTSB's investigation - uncontained engine failure and subsequent rapid decompression on a B737-700 during a commercial flight. That logic would implicate that God had wanted a shrapnel to inject, through a window of the plane, and injure this unfortunate - and as one can read - beloved mother and respected member of her community, to whose family millions of people, myself included, want to express their heartfelt condolences. No, this was not an act of God. If at all, it was his perfect timing of having the perfectly well trained, professional and experienced crew gather on that flight who managed to solve mutiple problems that are rarely (if at all) trained in conjuction, handling the situation and saving 140+ lives. But it doubt even that. It was just what we generally should be much more appreciative of: Having professionals who perform to the optimum of their capacities when needed. Flight crews, cabin crews and capable first responders in time of need. That's not a lucky coincidence, that's what professional training is for.Just my 2ct.

topofdescent Actually I find it interesting that people who don’t believe in Him are always blaming God for everything that goes wrong. If you read God’s book you would quickly discover that human beings decided a long time ago that they would be on Satan’s side. He loves it because you all blame his enemy. This means that the only ones he has to work on is believers in God. Makes it easier for him because everybody else are believing in something that is not God. It’s a win for him. God on the other hand has offered a solution to what Satan did and does. But most people don’t want to risk letting Him into their lives and want total control. Funny that when that control is not there, it’s God’s fault and not the fault of the “prince of the world “. Maybe you should actually read a Bible and open your mind and self up to see what you can learn if you actually study the Bible instead of ignoring or cherry picking bits and pieces.
Study it as you would a science book on a new discovery.

Good morning Barbara (the sun's already up here on the other side of the pond and we're expecting a lovely spring day). Thanks for taking the time to let me know your thaughts. Maybe I got you wrong, but actually never blamed "Him" - my point is the exact opposite (or so I thaught). While in this aspect we may be on the same page, we're probably having different approaches to life in general and that's perfectly ok. I for one just can't indulge in the constant devision between devine goodness and satanic evil. In my view it's rather love and compassion, the lack thereof or anything in between. But this will lead too far and this is not the right place to lead this discussion. I know you mean well when you suggest I should read the bible (although it comes across a bit like "let me help you to become a better person", but I don't get offended that easily. And, as I said, I'm sure you didn't want to offend me). Now back to why I felt like writing my above comment in the first place: 1st: From an aviator's point of view, the outcome of this incident (technically it's an accident since there have been injuries an a fatality - the first in the last 9 years in the U.S. btw.) is the best example for how extremely safe commercial aviation has become - not just because of the stresses modern aircraft can withstand but especially because of the proficiency level of the crews who operate them. 2nd: This is not in any way downplaying the great effort Mr. Needum took to help, save and, by doing so, comforting those around him. Too many people just look, stand in the way and take pictures when others need help. Not Andrew Needum. He acted and his human instinct for compassion and helping others kicked in within the blink of an eye. He deserves our gratitude greatly. And if he feels about it like he does, that's totally fine. I would just like to point out that this behaviour is also in the toolbox of non religious people and I oppose the notion that only God-loving people can be good human beings. He never said that, but many of the comments here suggest that. Peace, Daniel

topofdescent Good morning from the other side of the pond. Mr. Needham did not leave us in any doubt about what his motivation was for doing what he did. He told us outright that God motivated him to do what he did. Why do you find it necessary to ignore what he said and replace it with humanist attitude?
I have seen instances and read of them as well, where nobody helped. In New York there was an apartment building where a man beat a woman and left her behind to die. Hundreds of people sat on their balconies and watched. The man drove away and came back 20 minutes later to finish her off. Not only did nobody call the police while the first attack was happening, they didn’t call during the 20 minutes he was gone and the danger was gone. Nor did they do anything to help her. They didn’t call 911 when he came back to “finish her off”. There was no human instinct for compassion in that situation in any of the hundreds of people watching it all as it happened. They could have saved her at no risk to themselves, but didn’t.
When I suggested you read the Bible it was only to say that you have not likely done so and so don’t really know what God is really about. It was a comment on educating yourself. As far as trying to get you to believe, that isn’t up to me. As far as i’m concerned, you will believe what you want to anyway. It was the suggestion that you read with an open mind instead of with preconceived ideas. People can be moral but that doesn’t mean necessarily that they are good.

Dearest! I hear you. And I have hoped you would care to read my reply and I thank you very much that you did. I have to accept that we both are going to veer off the original topic which I originally wanted to talk about (i.e. a professional view on what is likely to have happened on this flight), knowing that that's probably not going to lead to any satisifying conclusion to either you or me. But something in the strength and persistance of how you place your argument got me hooked. So here I go.Before I refer to what you have stated about the probability of me having read the Bible or not, let me try to make it - yet again - as clear as I can be: I have absolutely no doubt that Mr. Needum (or Needham, as you write?) sincerely feels that God has motivated him to do what he did. Not only do I accept that, I also deeply respect him for that. In no way would I ever deny the validity of his motivation, let alone the good he did for his fellow passengers. Bottom line is: Peolple on this SWA Flight were lucky to have him and his good heart on the plane. Now to the tricky part. Firstly, I have read the Bible, mutliple times. Not only by myself but also with the added insight, guidance and interpretation of the Pastor of my rather large congregation at the time. I've also been in choir for 10+ years and served as a substitue nurse in a church-funded special-care home to finance college. So I'm not blowing wind into the sails of those who say religion and/or church is a hoax. Secondly: While I am not a pilot any more, I have been, some 20 years ago, fully trained and certified to fly (an older Version) B737 ("calssic", if that tells you something). So I can - with relative authority - judge what the crew in charge of this flight had to face and appreciate the way they did it. Lastly: I am a German citizen, so your language was taught to me by teachers in school, aviation and the songs of Frank Sinatra - as well as many extended visits to the great Country of yours (assuming that you are from the U.S.). So I think I can make an educated guess that it is unlikely that - as you wrote - "hundreds of people" were sitting on their balconies in NY when the dreadful deed you describe happened. Rarely are there ever any people on their balconies, let alone hundreds of them at the same time who can witness something that happens in a single apartment. But since we can not prove it either way, we just leave that aside. Lastly: I have been born, raised, socialised and still live in Germany with all the darkness of history we (rightfully so) will continue to bear, and keep being conscious of. So I am very much sensitized to people who seem to have no doubt about their perceived right to tell others what's right or wrong based on the teaching of large organizations that they feel secure and superior to others in, just because they are the (assumed) majority. That explicitly includes religions and their tendency to deny dignity, honour and reason to those who are not part of their team and who do not appreciate or encourage or engage in discourse and diversity. Probably something that you would accuse other religions of, but not your own. But since I don't know you and thus can't (and shouldn't) judge, I'm looking forward to your reply an wish you a very nice and relaxing weekend.Cheers,Daniel

topofdescent topofdescent Hello Daniel, I see that you have indeed spent quite a lot of time reading and studying the Bible and so I accept that. I have lived and worked in and with the Salvation Army. Even so, I believe that faith is an individual relationship between the worshipper and the worshiped. This means that whatever a person’s faith and we all believe in something, even atheism is a belief system, I respect them and hope that their faith sufficient for them. I believe that people will respond and rely on that system.
It is interesting that you also have spent time as a commercial pilot and so have a very special vantage point for understanding the difficulty involved in dealing with the situation. I cannot be qualified as a pilot due to physical limitations, even though I would have loved to fly had it been possible.
As far as the story in New York City, I am Canadian but distinctly remember the newspaper reports and how appalled people were when this event happened. The woman was raped and murdered at the front door of an apartment building. Her screaming attracted “hundreds of people “ who lived in and around the building.
We were shocked that all those people who heard her scream and came out on their balconies, not only did not call the police during the attack, they didn’t call while the woman laid bleeding to death at the front of the building for 20 minutes, when he came back and finished her off. He stabbed her numerous times to do so. While this happened when I was a teenager, the case was used as an example during my training with the police when I spent over 10 years as a Victim/Witness Assistance program. Dealing with victims of violent crimes. I was on duty from 6pm. to 6 am. approximately once a week. Since I was single at the time and really enjoyed the challenge involved, I did extra shifts.
Okay it was not hundreds but 38 people. To me the number of witnesses was way too many for people to not call the police. I have always reported anytime I think a crime is being committed, particularly because of this event. I have never forgotten the horror I felt and still feel as a result.
Here’s the news report from the paper. The rest of the story is online :

On March 13, 1964, a 28-year-old woman named Catherine “Kitty” Genovese was raped and killed in two separate late-night attacks near her home in Kew Gardens, Queens. Police found that at least 38 people had seen the attacks or heard Genovese scream, but no one intervened and just one woman called the police.

Seems like a good guy, but this really seemed like it was way too much about him and the fact that he was a firefighter. I'm a regular Joe schmo, and you can bet your behind I would have given all I had to help pull that poor lady back in the plane. This was a tragic situation and unfortunately a lovely lady lost her life.

In some respect it was about him! It was about a horrible incident that happened on a plane that cost a woman her life but it was also about a firefighter who was on the plane with his family and parents and was not just strong but trained to do what many others were not. He is a man who pushed his fears aside and got out of his seat to try and help even though many on the plane thought that they would never see land again alive. Now this bave man was answering questions as best he could without having a script in front of him. He not gave the glory to God but he refused to answer any questions that pertained to what exactly happened in the back of the plane. All people heard from him was what they had heard from someone else when it came to this lady's last minutes! Someone will always have things to say about someone if it's not someone that they know and love ... today one of those someone's are you

He certainly is a brave man and truly appreciate his recognition of God, I just think he could have displayed more humility and deflected some of the focus off of him. Brave yes, hero, I don't believe so. In the end, nothing brings this poor lady back and lessens the pain for her family.

uret7 Just curious but exactly how could he have displayed "more humility" than he already was? He is an average man who finds himself in an unusual situation that he did not seek out or create. Perhaps a little less critiquing and a little more understanding would be nice. Jeez...

Perhaps! But only the Godly would acknowledge it was God who led them to it and give Him all the Glory. Think of the times people ignore these prompting from God and turn a blind eye to a situation where they could have made a huge difference if they had been heedful. Like for instance, in the case of young James Kruger. Too many folks were given the opportunity to do the right thing by him and yet didn't!

I’m grateful for the firemen and women but it looks like every time one of them does his job now, they’re on a campaign to promote their heroism. I love the false humility. If he was truly humble, he’d make the entire conference about the woman that died and the pilot that was the true hero. In a situation as bad as it was, she remained calm and landed that plane like a boss. And stop giving God credit. What the hell did he do?

Bravo to a stand up, decent American! One thing I think is interesting to consider is that this is a man of faith. Nothing against atheism, but I think there's an argument to be made that this man's compassion, humility and courage is intertwined with his spiritual worldview. I'm not saying an atheist wouldn't act this bravely, I'm just saying to all those passionately anti-religious atheists: don't throw the baby out with the bathwater.
