  • In part two of their first joint interview, the heroic crew of Southwest Airlines Flight 1380 -- Capt. Tammie Jo Shults, co-pilot First Officer Darren Ellisor, and flight attendants Rachel Fernheimer, Seanique Mallory and Kathryn Sandoval -- join "CBS This Morning" to discuss the moments after an engine exploded mid-flight. Shults says her military training "definitely came in" amid the emergency landing.

      I wouldn’t say that since all pilots should be able to land an airplane with one engine at 30,000 feet. Sully lost both engines and was at around 5 to 10,000 feet and surrounded by skyscrapers and 8 million people. He even landed the plane on the Hudson. Do you see the difference?

      dan but sully wasn’t at 36,000 feet with a very quick cabin depressurization and a woman half way out of the window!? At least sully’s plane was balanced

      @dan well when you have a plane suddenly banking to a 40 degrees roll, and sudden cabin depressurization, you need to react quick enough to not get hypoxia, and immediately stabilize the plane to prevent it from getting out of control. Don't forget the plane was shaking hard with all the warnings going off while all of these were happening. The pilot and co-pilot must tune out all the distractions to focus on the tasks at hand.
      To illustrate how fast you can go from being in control to an uncontrollable dive that started out with a soft banked angle, you can look at what happened to Adam Air. The plane had slowly banked 30 degrees to the right when autopilot was mistakenly disengaged. It only took 30 seconds for the plane to roll to 100 degrees with a 60 degrees nose down. 30 seconds! The end result, horrible crash with the plane nosediving at a descent rate of 54,000 feet/min, and breaking up midair.
      What Tammy and FO did was not something easy at all. They are highly highly skilled aviators. Normally on a flight simulator training, they give you one problem to fix at a time, never like this, where you have 2 problems happening at the same time. The crews had to make the right decisions at the right time while going through all the emergency checklists. You need someone with nerves like Tammy Jo and her FO to tune out all the distractions and focus on the tasks at hand. This is where military training comes in handy. You are obviously not a pilot, so I do not expect you to appreciate how skilled these crews were and how well the CRM was done, but at least don't discredit them for saving the souls on board.

    And so many people say they would not trust a woman pilot!!!! Tammy-Jo Shults may have just proven that female pilots can indeed be trusted just as much as male pilots. To me, not trusting a female pilot is like not trusting a male flight attendant. I trust both genders, as long as the individual is physically and mentally capable of performing the required duties, and handling emergencies in a safe and efficient manner.

      Debra Penney You are 100% correct. Most people believe that only the pilots are working during a catastrophic event such as this. When anyone mentions the words “flight crew” most people assume it is a reference for only the pilots. The flight crew is everyone who is not a passenger on any given flight. Flight attendants are technically second in command to the pilots by being the eyes and ears for what cannot be heard once the cockpit door is closed.

    • @NormaLilia24
      @NormaLilia24 6 лет назад

      lenzy daaboul it wouldn't work for several reasons .. if they are in a higher altitude of 10K as it's not a breathable height, also they would pass out due to how fast the plane is going etc.

      I addtion Parachutes for all passenger's are also way to heavy.

    • @sheryllyles6814
      @sheryllyles6814 5 лет назад +4

      Their titles don’t dictate who is flying the plane. Both are Pilots. Captains have more responsibility than First Officer’s. A FO can have more flight hours as a Capt - they can choose if they want the extra responsibility or not. The plane was on auto-pilot when the engine blew and the FO took the controls afterwards. Then, the Capt took the controls for the FO to run checklists and shut down systems.
