What is the most efficient way to throttle a steam engine. I see that most times people just throttle down the steam flow using a valve but I know some stream engines used special valve timing that would close earlier or later to based on the governor. I feel like using a valve to drop the steam pressure is a waste of that pressure. If the boiler makes 60# and the gate valve drops it to 20# isn't that gate valve wasting a lot of energy?

You need to understand the concept, it is simple. Closing a valve drops the steam pressure to the engine by letting less steam through to do the work. To use your logic: If the boiler generates 60PSI and the gate valve drops it to 20PSI no energy is wasted by doing this - the other 40PSI is still inside the boiler, it will only come out if you open the valve a bit wider, then the engine will speed up and/or give more power ....... nothing is wasted at all. The Centrifugal type of Governor just closes a valve to keep the engine at a constant speed. relative to the load. Hope this helps.

@@keithappleton Here is my disconnect. If I do a though experiment. I could replace that throttling valve with another steam engine that takes in 60# and exhausts at 20# and have that 20# steam run the original steam engine. Basically like making the engine into a double expansion engine but with different crank shafts. I get another engine running without using any more steam. There is probably something I am missing as to why this wouldn't work and I would appreciate your help in finding it.
I am in no way trying to insult you, I'm new and thinking of building my own model steam engine and really appreciate all your videos. I'm just trying to better understand by asking questions and really appreciate your help in understanding.
