Okay…
1- she didn’t “slightly” injure her ankle, she broke it
2- she told her coach she didn’t want to go again but her coach told her she had to
3- the United States didn’t actually need her to go a second time to win
Edit: She didn’t break her ankle but it was still a severe injury
She tore 2 ligaments; a very painful injury.
She didn't break it, she suffered a third degree ankle sprain.
But still, it was wrong
Watch her TV interviews post Olympics. Watch her 20 year anniversary interview. Keri never said she was forced to do the second vault. She said she wanted to do it. She also said they didn't know at the time that they already had the gold. No one watching knew either. As for her ankle it was badly injured. She retired after that Olympics to go to college. She never planned to continue her gymnastics career afterward. You have things all wrong.
I met Kerri and she is one of the nicest people I've ever spoken to. As an athlete myself, seeing her strength and determination is something that I think we all can take something away from. What an amazing moment. I think there's something in my eye!
Ok what is you said is true. Well I’m not really sure is she is nice though because I never met her And when she made the landing with ONE FOOT ONE FOOT! Was honestly really impressive and with a broken ankle it truly was a amazing moment...... BUT YOU MET HER? WHEN WHERE WHAT TIME?
Maybe it's a tear at the thought of her having to retire due to the injury forced on her by the coach who continued with his career.
This is so untrue. She did NOT need to vault for the team to win gold.
Karoly was a monster.
link please
It wasn't guaranteed. We can only say she didn't need to do it after that fact.
I've heard that too. The point is, she was a kid and her health should have been more important to her coach and the country than a gold medal. It wasn't. And I agree, Karoly IS a monster.
You don't know either of them . Your attempt to lower Strug's courageous performance to serve your narrative is repulsive. As others have said, your statement is hindsight.
She actually need to do it to win gold since they had gold but the other team could have gotten it so since she landed it she clinched it for American
The US not needing her to do the second vault to win doesn’t diminish at all what she did. This is the gutsiest performance I’ve ever seen on the Olympic stage. I understand that this became a permanent injury that shortened her career and my heart breaks for her… but such a feat will live on long after she is gone. What a way to go! And what a legacy to leave.
There was no way at the time to know that that vault wasn't needed though. There were still three scores yet to be posted for Russia at that point. There was no way to know what they would score.
If she didn't vault shed get a zero and no medal at all for the team she needed that vault the team needed those points to complete a lifetime goal for all of them and she knew it would hurt no out forced her to be great it's all heart and guts it's hard to do that with 2 legs and everything on the line that's what real champions do they deal with the pain and the possibility of failing and persevere that was heroic quitting on your team isn't you don't forget how to do this just because you fall in practice you are supposed to fall in practice that's how you learn she had won gold and did this her whole life it wasn't mental disability it was heart disability she did her tinman impersonation and nailed it like Kari did this vault
@@shaneburke4863 no it is a 7-6-5 event, 6 up five count, they don't need her score, just take the 5 they already got and that's it
She injures her ankle and manages to vault and win gold and I'm here stubbing my toe and falling on the floor in pain.
Same here 😂
Me too. Ooooooow!
Gymnasts do this sort of thing all the time. Compete with bad injuries
😂😂😂😂
The US was willing to injure a child for a victory. She won the gold but was never able to do gymnastics again because of her injury. She didn't have a choice, she didn’t break her ankle, she ruptured a ligament in her ankle and damaged a tendon in it: even worse than a break. Go watch the new Netflix documentary called "Athlete A" because this moment was mentioned. Truly sad and disgusting how they abused those girls
I remember watching this with my mom.. we went crazy when they announced her score 👏👏👏👏
That injury forced her to retire at 18. She shouldn't have gone again.
Please spare us. Mary Lou Retton retired at the same age. No injuries.
Yeah, but her star will never fade away.

This is abuse, plain and simple. There is nothing to cheer for here, I'm glad Simone Biles is bringing attention to this!
There, summarized every single comment on this video for you.
I was thinking about this comparison people are making. While I understand, in the abstract, the responses that people have and, perhaps, the changed attitudes that we now have, in terms of empowering athletes, this episode [with Strug] seems markedly different in that she was faced with the prospect of one exercise in one event, with seconds of [extremely brutal] pain, prior to hopefully getting some painkillers and treatment. Simone had a whole competition ahead of her; a lot more time to feel and strain under the pressure. Also, I think Simone Biles had a little more time to deliberate.
@@samdevil82 Kerri Strug was still 18 when she did this vault and it was a career-ending injury for her (as far as competing in the olympics goes). Simone is 24

As a kid warching the 96 olympics, this was the moment I understood what "taking one for the team" meant. THANK YOU!!! WHAT AN INSPIRATION!
And now we know it also ment taking one (or more) for Larry Nassar.

Her and Kurt Angle both won gold on injuries this same year. Was a happy moment for me to see them both win. I cried when I saw this live. Still feel it today 20 years later.
She was the Kurt Angle of gymnastics.
Dang. What a freaking boss. Props to her.
Lol "Slightly"? She broke her ankle, and then vaulted on it again!
It wasn't broken. It was a bad sprain with tendon damage. Still ridiculously painful and just as admirable for her to continue despite such an injury.
Aish Siva she actually tore two ligaments.

I have never heard of this before. 2019 and this makes me teary eyed! I can only imagine the collective screaming around all American TVs at that moment that day! I wish I was part of that.
This clip, however, also makes me self reflect how quickly I give up when things get hard. What an inspiration. Makes me believe I can fight through pains and hard things that go on in my life!

It was an amazing moment. From literal failure to triumph. We all erupted. We originally thought that other foot never even came down and she landed a perfect vault one footed!
I remember this well. Probably the most iconic moment of the 1996 Olympics.
I'm not even American and I was on my feet rooting for her. I was a blubbering wreck afterwards. Got a lump in my throat watching it again.
20 years after and i cry again for this beatiful woman, i m proud of you kerri, forever
20 years ago this beautiful women served our country right. ❤️♥️♥️❤️❤️
How? By potentially killing herself by vaulting on a broken foot? You’re sick
robyn Lbanks winning a stupid medal is apparently more important than her ankle
My how we have grown. People are now aware that this was abusive. The USA did not need her to vault to "win at all cost". These young woman and young woman first and foremost. Thank you Ms. Biles for bringing this to the world attention.
Key difference is that Biles should have quit and let someone who was mentally and physically ready to take the chance to represent her country. To do so after she had gone to Tokyo, thus depriving of that girl the opportunity of a lifetime, is selfish.
MAD that your GOAT is a quitter. Should have practice her mental gymnastic
@@TomNook. to be fair, they have alternates so Jade Carey got to take her place thus Simone pulling out actually provided another girl an opportunity of a lifetime...
Anyone find it weird how Biles had the mental ability to get through to the Finals in all events, but somehow doesn't have enough to compete in Finals? Seems more and more that she was scared of letting her country down. Unless the pressure is impacting her vision or balance which can happen, but no reports of it.
💯💯💯💯💯💯💯
This didn't ruin her career, it made it!
didn't she never compete again
That was a career ending injury for her and Dominique Moceanu.
If you look at her closeup before the historic vault you can see a tear sliding down her cheek. She was hurting enough to cry yet performed an amazing vault. What a champion!
thats glitter
For someone who is used to sports injury, I felt the pain dude! That effin hurts!😬 I am used to my knee and Itbs injury but the once in a while foot injury and pain that I got scared me the most. Awesome athlete for still going despite being injured.
I tear up every time I watch this! Amazing!
Watched this live on tv. Always emotional. Can't believe it's been so long ago..
Ironically unbeknownst to the coaches and gymnasts at the time, they won the gold medal without this vault. She didn't have to sacrifice her ankle.
She sacrificed a chance at individual gold for team gold. The mark of a true champion!
I remember seeing this live. That 2nd vault was perfect, but she was clearly in agonizing pain
I remember watching this on my couch with my dad. It's one of my favorite Olympic moment.
Same here. I was 13. I witnessed history. I don't think the women's team ever won gold before then. Oh, and I had a mad crush on Dominic Moceanu.
Tyrone Branch... I cried like a baby every time and even after that... I was 12 in 1996, I thought it was the best thing ever. Albeit, Kerri was hurt and that is probably why cried but it was still amazing.
She was forced to do it
@@addisonm5423 she was not. You're taking clips from the interview with the coach, not her.
The drive of a champion. Not many have it. Talent isn't enough. The eye of the tiger is true. The thrill of the fight. Rising up to the challenge of our rival. Which, but, very few can accomplish in all walks of life. HAIL to the victors!!!
got to love seeing the difference between then and now, both in the comments and in the events.
I was 16 and absolutely loved this woman. even thought about going to the USA to find her. very insprirational
I was 15.
I remember watching this in '96 and it still gives me goosebumps today.
Important to note that she did NOT need to vault again to cinch the medal for Team USA. Her dedication and accomplishment should be celebrated, while also acknowledging the abusive, win-at-all-costs culture of gymnastics for so long.
Except they didn't know that until AFTER her second vault, as the russians performed one more time after. Her second vault cinched the mathematical win - no matter what happened or how the final Russian floor routine went, the americans were getting gold. Had she only done her first vault, it was still possible for them to lose.
as @@erin9868 rightly put it, this couldnt be known beforehand, because there was one more russian jump after her. In the words of wikipedia "Retrospectively, after a poor performance from the final Russian Roza Galieva on floor, Moceanu's score (9.200) would have been sufficient to beat the Russians even if Strug had not performed a second vault, as the lowest score for each team was dropped. However, Galieva performed after Strug, and therefore Strug needed to land a second vault on her feet in order to mathematically clinch the gold. "
Nobody asked you so shut up. This girl is an Olympic Hero
I cried then and I'm STILL crying seeing this moment 😩😭😭😭😭
I'm not crying. You are.😭
Cry even harder because Larry Nassar was the doctor who tended to her injured foot
The first olympic games I've ever watched. I remember that moment perfectly!!
wow reading the comments its clear that people think she did this because SHE wanted to but in reality she didn't have any other choice...her coach, Károlyi insisted to do it again...watch the documentary Athlete A and it will change the way how you watch this clip...
This clip from Athlete A was told from a different woman's point of view, who wasn't even there. Her main focus was the doctor that was sexually abusing people.
I watched this when it happened I still tear up when I replay it so many times it happened so fast sometimes it looks like she landed it on the right foot the vault one leg but then watching it again she landed on two legs but picks up the left leg quickly hops around then falls down. And looking good at the couches faces and people behind her yeah shouts of joy then there faces seeing her hop around like omg.
The ‘96 Olympics were the best Olympics ever!
Also, Chris Kattan does a hilarious Kerri. 🤣
She had a tear in her eye!
Blood, sweat and tears. For all we know that could have been sweat
Considering how much pain she was in that should not be surprising
Kerri Strug is a hero. Nothing else matters.

robyn Lbanks as far as we know she wasn’t molested by him thank God
Jenna Poole I’d rather listen to KERI who is on record stating had she not vaulted again it would have haunted her for giving up, she made the choice to go again no one else as it was a split second decision. Give the athlete some credit for making her own choice to vault again vs making it appear she was just a sheep. Secondly her ankle healed in just weeks, she did an entire gymnastics tour all year after Atlanta where she tumbled and flipped without issues so i don’t know where you are getting this idea that her ankle injury destroyed her physical abilities to ever tumble again. Lastly she had planned to retire after 96, she did not want to compete as an elite and never had plans to continue a competitive career in gymnastics so the ankle was not the reason she retired.
@@muckyou1490 Very well said. If it had been 4years earlier in Barcelona I believe it would have been Bela or Nuno's (who was the assistant coach) job to stop her from doing the second vault or at least discussed with her trying to protect her from more injury. but by this time she was eighteen and should have more of a say in what she could or could not do
Turns out the US team's lead was so great, Kerri actually *didnt* need to vault again. And shame on us for not recognizing that a young girls life was put at stake for a stupid medal.

I remember watching this live, oh my god how inspiring the olympics used to be. These people were not just athletes but entertainers heroes and role models. I don't know what happened, same thing that happened with music and everything else, but something changed and now its uninspired and there is no spirit, taken for granted and routines are done more like a job without pushing limits or showing off skill just calculated for score and medal. Being an olympic champion meant heroic human spirit and pushing limits and showing the rest of the world what us humans are capable of. Kerry Strug, Dominic Moceanu, Andreea Raducan, and Alexei Nemov were my childhood heroes.
I have to agree with you. Lack of passion for...well...anything has corrupted the beauty of the things that used to inspire us.
Simone Biles, Gabby Douglas and Aly are uninspiring? Even coming through ears of sexual assault from their ‘doctor’ and coming through it like champs? They’ve changed the sport of gymnastics forever, including the expectation that women have to be waifs to compete and be the best. I disagree completely!
I cry every time I see this clip. What an amazing moment.
So much determination for a 14 year old girl props to her
