    Okay…
1- she didn’t “slightly” injure her ankle, she broke it
2- she told her coach she didn’t want to go again but her coach told her she had to
3- the United States didn’t actually need her to go a second time to win
Edit: She didn’t break her ankle but it was still a severe injury

Watch her TV interviews post Olympics. Watch her 20 year anniversary interview. Keri never said she was forced to do the second vault. She said she wanted to do it. She also said they didn't know at the time that they already had the gold. No one watching knew either. As for her ankle it was badly injured. She retired after that Olympics to go to college. She never planned to continue her gymnastics career afterward. You have things all wrong.

The US not needing her to do the second vault to win doesn’t diminish at all what she did. This is the gutsiest performance I’ve ever seen on the Olympic stage. I understand that this became a permanent injury that shortened her career and my heart breaks for her… but such a feat will live on long after she is gone. What a way to go! And what a legacy to leave.

I was thinking about this comparison people are making. While I understand, in the abstract, the responses that people have and, perhaps, the changed attitudes that we now have, in terms of empowering athletes, this episode [with Strug] seems markedly different in that she was faced with the prospect of one exercise in one event, with seconds of [extremely brutal] pain, prior to hopefully getting some painkillers and treatment. Simone had a whole competition ahead of her; a lot more time to feel and strain under the pressure. Also, I think Simone Biles had a little more time to deliberate.

Jenna Poole I’d rather listen to KERI who is on record stating had she not vaulted again it would have haunted her for giving up, she made the choice to go again no one else as it was a split second decision. Give the athlete some credit for making her own choice to vault again vs making it appear she was just a sheep. Secondly her ankle healed in just weeks, she did an entire gymnastics tour all year after Atlanta where she tumbled and flipped without issues so i don’t know where you are getting this idea that her ankle injury destroyed her physical abilities to ever tumble again. Lastly she had planned to retire after 96, she did not want to compete as an elite and never had plans to continue a competitive career in gymnastics so the ankle was not the reason she retired.
