    ...
    Happy 2023 everyone!!! I hope your 2023 is off to a great start and that you had a restful holiday🎄 This vlog is a little late, but it's okay because I was spending the winter break resting, recharging and planning content on my newly launched Instagram account (you can follow me on @biomedwithvy for more short form content!)
    It hasn't snowed this heavily in the UK since, I want to say, 2018? ❄☃️ So I was very excited for a white Christmas (it didn't snow on Christmas day but this week of snow definitely made up for it!).
    This week in the lab wasn't too busy, but it was productive in the sense that I was restocking on different reagents and consumables, trying to trouble shoot an issue with one of our large construct extractions (so trying out a new kit), wrapping things up in tissue culture and being a little social with our lab Christmas dinner 🍽
    I hope you enjoy this little vlog, I am so so thankful to all of you - for giving meaning to what I do, here's to 2023 being our year! 🥂❤
    With love,
    Vy

    great video! im a research technician at imperial and ive used a similar protocol in using E.coli cells to grow our antibody construct. After growth I would carry out purification using dialysis tubing then using sepharose beads to clean it out. final stage was isolation of the antibody construct using affinity chromatography on beads. Whole protocol took me a week before i get my antibody. its giving me memories of when i had to do this!

      One question - how come you don’t work in an aseptic environment when working with your bacterial cultures? Is it not necessary for this type of work? Thanks!

    • @biomedwithvy
      @biomedwithvy  2 года назад +1

      @@drjessicagomezb ahh thank you! 😊 I normally just ethanol wipe surfaces and it's not necessary (for our group and the work we do anyway) to do microbiology work in hoods/super aseptic environments because the genetically modified organisms (GMOs) we work with are classes 1-2 I.e. poses no or little risk to us.

    • @biomedwithvy
      @biomedwithvy  Год назад +2

      yeahh stem cells has vast applications, my role involves genetically engineering the mouse adaptive immune system to human to create biologics used in cancer immunotherapy. stem cells come in bc we engineer this and microinject into mouse embryos to create a mouse model! that's all I can share due to NDAs hahaa

    Hii is being a research assistant a hard and stressful job?

    • @biomedwithvy
      @biomedwithvy  Год назад +2

      The learning curve in the beginning was quite steep for me especially because I wasn’t very familiar with the area of research (so had to read a lot of papers and ask colleagues a lot of questions) and my technical skills were okay but not that polished. I did receive training during my first few months tho so that helped me feel a bit more at ease! But once you get the hang of things and pass your probation period, most experiments become very repetitive and it will feel like second nature. The stress probably comes from pressure to delivery accurately and on time, but other than that I find it quite a balanced job!

      @@biomedwithvy ohh i see thank u very much for the reply😊
      actually i heard that even doctors can work in research if they dont want to work with patients u know and heard that it was less stressful than working as a doctor...and im kinda interested too...
