Hello! I love your videos! We love to do pole beans in our garden. Do you ever do bush beans? I am planning on trying some this spring and was wondering if you can harvest the beans when they're still green and dry them like you do your onions so that we can harvest more from the same plant instead of letting them fully dry while on the plant?
My gran grew pole beans.( only). I started with pole beans then switched to bush. I’ll pull the whole bush up to harvest. I think I’m going back to pole beans. I like the continuous harvest method better. Like I wouldn’t dream of growing a determinate tomato plant. No way!!! Thanks for the video 👍
I planted bush beans at the foot of my pole beans in a super large container. The bush beans are TINY not even able to pick them. Not sure why. Full sun.
My First time growing rattlesnake pole beans and highly recommend them for high heat days. Beautiful strong plant with great beans! Great video thank you 🙏 😊
My first year for pole beans and I had to harvest just before the frost. I have seed pods and ones fit to eat. The vines escaped the garden and climbed a tree. Crazy vines they have. Thanks to you, now I know much more and will plan for more in 2021!
@@MelissaKNorris ... That's a great point. Thankfully, I don't watch television. It usually only gets turned on if a major weather event is taking place because I know the local station shifts into 24 hour weather coverage on one of it's channels. @@MelissaKNorris lol too here ; i would say both tv n' beans can be addictive ; saying hello to all my little green friends each morning or watching the fugitive / green book are both fun and thrilling. agreed though some tv stuff can be absolute bummers ... reality tv shows auggghhhhh
I screwed up and planted a row of family heirloom pole beans next to a row of squash, now a tangled nightmare.. The biggest problem is I failed to train the beans up a trellis. I’m hoping I can seed save the beans for next year. After watching this great video I’m going to lift some of the beans off ground for airflow and wait for some savers. I need to find your teepee trellis vid for next year. I wish I’d found your channel last Winter when I was failing to plan😁 Thanks to your work we’ve managed to save lots of heirloom seed for next year. We deeply appreciate you. Ty
Yeah i made the same mistake the 1st year of my garden i didnt think about any of that. had squash next to peppers. watermelon next to tommatos and pumpkins next to everything (threw seeds into the compost lol) it was a great mess but a learning experience
perfect vid. merci beaucoup. instructive :)) i just plante last 10 days literally hundreds if green beans all over my yard (plus borlotti, red beans, peas). i cross my fingers that i can harvest anything from the fall garden time.
My father in law is growing pole beans and purple Hull peas this year in his garden. He just sent me a huge bag of pole beans. They're much fatter than I remember them being for green beans and the skin seems thicker to me. I was worried they wouldn't cook well as a green bean at this point. They cooked some as green beans a couple weeks ago that were good don't get me wrong but they seemed to have a thick skin. I remember snapping green pole beans and them being smoother when I was a kid. I think since I have so many I will try to snap some for green beans and then shell the rest just to see how they'll turn out as green beans. Next year when my husband and I do our own garden I'll know how to pick them for green beans or shell beans. I think my FIL waited to pick his till he could pick a lot at one time and may have waited a little too long. Your video was very helpful!
Melissa K. Norris - Modern Homesteading No I’m actually in Iraq right now, I just came across your channel recently and have been watching some of your past videos which I now subscribe to. I hope to do some gardening when I do get back home.
So to use as a navy bean I can go ahead and shell them before the pod turns brown? I always thought you had to let the pod completely dry for both seed and navy bean.
I started laughing when you said really hot like 95 😂 I’m thinking 95 is not bad when summer temps can get up in the teens. I forget not everyone has super hot summers.
I understand that if you pick the beans before they are "ripe" that the plant will produce many more beans, in it's effort to reproduce. Some other plants will do this as well, like zucchini. Tomatoes won't.
My pole beans bolted after a big period of heat and humidity and a bunch of beans are yellowing and not the most edible - if the beans are big enough are they safe to dry for winter? I hate the idea of the waste but I also don't want to shuck 'em all and have them go off
Yes. I did enjoy this video. I save all my seeds. If your on the lookout for some heirloom seeds just let me know. Some borage or loveage perhaps? God bless and keep up the good work. - Is there laws about giving seeds as opposed to selling seeds?
If you have a po box I will send some on. They can grow very large but you will never lack for celery flavoring. Or Bloody Mary straws if your into that kind of thing. Look the solution for disposable straws is solved.
This may be a dumb question, but I have watched both of your pole bean videos and can't quite get the answer I'm looking for. I usually grow bush bean varities for regular "green beans". I grew pole beans for the first time this year to try to cook a pot of dry beans, or if enough harvested, store dry beans to cook another day. When you talk about fresh beans at the yellowy stage, my beans aren't quite "dry" when I've picked them that way. I have some that the pod has completely dried as well and I guess those are considered to be a seed saving bean. Are seed saving beans the same as like a package of dried beans you would buy? Is there an amount of time after shelling that I should allow them to continue to dry before storing? Thank you!
My Grandparents would always fix a nice pot of " Shelly Beans " but I have no idea of what variety, I just recall stringing and snapping and occasionally opening a few up to add more loose beans in the mix .... what is the name of the bean you have shown us here and I will give them a try this fall ... zone 9a Florida
first, great video! second i have some pole beans that look ready to pick but still have a little fur or fuzz on them and yours don't. do i wait until that fuzz is gone to pick them?
Great video! (Also, love your outfit!) Has anyone ever grown painted pony beans and had a good experience with them as green beans? I know you're supposed to pick them young but if I let them get even half a pencil wide they were already inedibly tough. Is that normal?
If you believe Jesus was God in the flesh and call on his name you will be forgiven your sins because He is God who took on human form and offered Himself as a sacrifice. Be on the lookout for Satan's impending appearance on earth where he will pretend to be Jesus. Jesus was eating at Simon's house (Simon was a leper whom Jesus had healed) a few days before He was crucified when a lady arrived with a box of priceless ointment and anointed Him with its contents. The disciples thought the woman was crazy since she might have sold the ointment and donated the money to the needy. She had anointed him for burial, Jesus said, and he commanded that what he had done be reported so that she would be remembered wherever the gospel is preached.
Did you enjoy this video? Are you growing pole beans and do you do any type of seed saving?

Pole beans so much easier for elderly people to grow and pick. Lol....that's my reason for growing them
First year at growing poke beans. Is there anything you can do if you picked them to developed? Are they worth eating or can they be dried?

Im so glad you make this video, last year i was not sure when to pick the green beans i was letting them go too long and the flavor was not good
Now I know I need a life.
Watching about green beans on a Friday night.
Psst ... You're not alone buddy. LOL

My first time growing pole beans. I have a harvest now in S Ontario. It's been really hot so I'll keep in mind what you said. I water daily if needed.

Did you ever make a follow up to this video for the dried up seed beans?
I really enjoy growing beans but this year I’m going to grow purple beans. Simple reason - they are easier to find on the plant.
Thank you so much! I’m new at this and it’s great info! ❤️
Thank you soooo much
Oh goodness. It's in the 90s every day in early June where I am. Guess I'm not getting beans any time soon.
I love pole beans.
@jagsfanrick as you can tell, I think they're the best type of green bean, lol
@Royal Empress they are different
So to use as a navy bean I can go ahead and shell them before the pod turns brown? I always thought you had to let the pod completely dry for both seed and navy bean.
For eating you can shell whenever you want as long as they're big enough. For seed just fully developed
Great Video

@Lynn Proctor yes, with beans, harvesting them will help the plant to produce more.
You should check out jnullo or a big family homestead hyou would like them

Only when it comes to selling them or shipping internationally. I'd love some lovage seed!

How do you keep the bean from getting moldy?
Do you have any pole bean recipes you'd like to share?
I planted red kidney beans. They dried on the vine but I harvest white kidney beans. How is that?
Do you sell your seeds?
👍👍👍👍👍
Can you save them as dry beans and cook them and eat them like a pinto?
Yes! They're more like a navy bean than a pinto though once shelled and dried
