  • Knowing when to harvest or pick green beans is easy when you know what to look for. In this video I show you how I decide if my green beans are ready or not. Some people call them snap beans, some call them string beans, either way knowing when to pick them is critical. For best flavor picking at the right time is important. Green beans are an easy vegetable to grow. And should be in everyone's garden. One of the best vegetables for all gardener is the common green bean.

    Gorgeous plants and beans. You introduced me to Rattlesnake a few years ago and I've never looked back. It's the only green green bean I grow (I also grow purple Trionfo Violetto, but RSPB are still better). For dried beans I grow True Red Cranberry and Good Mother Stallard. Also put in Christmas Lima and Cherokee Trail of Tears. Few things make me happier than my bean tunnels and I wouldn't ever have tried if I hadn't seen your videos. I can tell by the growth your beans was in the ground before mine, good info and perfect timing. My rattlesnakes are coming in now but just a few look ready. I made an arch the pole beans is up the side but not started across yet. Your buddy at Garvins sold me some Azomite he opened a 50# bag just to sell me 5#. I told him you recommended and I believe he's using it now.

      Garvin's is a great store, his opening a 50 pound bag to see you 5 pounds is just one example of what they do to serve their customers. I started my green beans on 5 April, in the house, under grow lights. When my okra comes in, I plan to present a class at Garvin's on how to can okra. I use Azomite in every planting that I do. • @OldAlabamaGardener
      @OldAlabamaGardener  5 лет назад

      @@docriordan7787 I understand. Most of the doctors don't even have it checked. Just one word of caution: What the doctors tell us is good, for some thing may not be good. For example: The doctors think a blood level of 25 to 30 ng/ml is good, but that is in the deficient range, especially if you are battling cancer. Your body needs vitamin D to perform over 1,000 functions. If you are low those functions either don't work or don't work well. What is your C-reactive protein (CRP) level? CRP is a measure of inflammation in your body. It needs to be under 1.0. Anything over 1.0 is on the road to a blocked artery in my opinion. But I am not a doctor,I am just talking about my own experience.

      @OldAlabamaGardener  5 лет назад

      Hello and welcome to my videos. It depends on what is eating the bean plants as they come up. If it is a Groundhog (Woodchuck), trappings is one way. If it is a rabbit or deer go to Lowes and buy a product called Deer Off, spray your plants with it and the deer and rabbits won't eat it, but it is not harmful to humans. If it is cut worms buy a product called Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) and spray the ground with it, it is not harmful to humans. I think that covers the most likely critter that are eating your plants. If you do and you don't think that is the pest, then there is no need to spray the ground with Bt. No, Bt probably won't work on the grass hoppers. For the grass hoppers I would use a contact insecticide named: Pyola. You can buy Pyola at www.gardensalive.com
      Mix and spray it right on the grasshoppers because it is a contact only insecticide. Which means it has to get on the insect to kill it. Just spraying the leaves won't do anything to the grasshoppers.

    Help! I've got Bean Foliage lots of Foliage but No Beans. Never had this problem before. Some seeds came from different seed packs, some came from store bought ready to cook beans, lots of very nice foliage, no beans. Help. Cucumbers growing right beside them are doing very well.

      Lots of foliage usually means too much nitrogen fertilizer. What kind of fertilizer are you using? If you appreciate my videos please subscribe and watch as I will be uploading more videos as the summer growing season comes on. Thanks for watching and subscribing.

      @@OldAlabamaGardener 13 13 13 but I was late to fertilize, I didn't until plants were two to three feet tall. I'm wondering if the seeds I planted were GMO/made not to reproduce. For years I've planted beans from ready to cook from the grocer. I did the same this time along with seeds from Burpee, Ferry Morse, MIgardener.

      @@OldAlabamaGardener Wonder, Not seen Bees this year, my tomatoes aren't fruiting very well either, maybe it's Bees or lack of bees.

    • @OldAlabamaGardener
      @OldAlabamaGardener  5 лет назад

      @@daledurbin2354 Tomatoes are wind pollinated, so they don't need the bees. Green beans are also wind pollinated, but you will see the bees on the blooms. The bees might help some but are not necessary for the green beans to produce. Triple 13, the fertilizer you are using, is pretty high in nitrogen, 13%. Too much of it would produce a lot of foliage. So, the question is:How much did you put to the beans? I don't use store bought beans for seeds because when they are almost read for harvest, they are sprayed with Round-Up on the plants to remove the foliage and to dry the beans before harvesting.

    why would my snaps not have beans inside

    • @OldAlabamaGardener
      @OldAlabamaGardener  4 года назад +1

      It could be different reasons. 1) The beans could be too small yet to make beans. 2) It could be they needed more water. 3) It could be the type or variety you are growing. Without me being there it is impossible for me to know.
