      Relationship dynamic between the chief and his closest, and by that point oldest, surviving ally.
      As last lines go, pretty solid.

    • @DanZhukovin

      Because many people were arguing as to whether Halo 3 was going to be the last Halo, since those people believed that the Master Chief was dead, and that line was giving people who believed that there were going to be more Halo games a reason to believe that there was going to be more Halo games.

    • @Celred
      @Celred 8 лет назад +14

      very true, but i love the simplicity the maps are on the old halos. I do love some of the maps that halo 4 and 5 have. But ive got to say that i dont like the style of the new elites, old style Imo is the iconic elite style.

      @pointman824 8 лет назад +6

      +EggyMcEggman
      Oh, yes, I do agree with you absolutely. The old style of the Elites were way better looking than these new versions. I was hoping that the Swords of Sanghelios at least retained the iconic appearance from the old style, particularly the ones seen in Halo 2A and Reach, that way it's also better distinguishing between Jul's faction and Thel's faction (Swords of Sanghelios). However, this could have been caused from issues with resources. Hopefully, in Halo 6, the Swords of Sanghelios will have their old style appearance at least.

    Would love to engage in discussion about this. 343i basically destroyed Halo. One of the best aspects of Halo was the multiplayer shit talking. 343i has basically made it so where that is removed and that is a shame. It seems like I'm being a real jerk here by saying I want to "shit talk" people online but that WAS apart of it in a big way. Making friends and temporary enemies before a match made it all that more sweeter when you go to destroy them with your "skillz". Now when I'm about to enter a multiplayer match there is no individuality, We're all covered by thumbnails and nobody talks to each other. The community isn't there because 343i wants to change what THEY don't like about the game which isn't necessarily something we ever disliked. Story is too convoluted, multiplayer lacks community because they don't like the trash talking and the maps are unimaginative. 343i doesn't know how to make a Halo game....they know how to make a generic space shooting game.

      Its a damn shame too because Halo had such a great and massive lore to be drawn from if the people who made the game cared enough about it. I will always play halo 1, 2 , and 3 with my friends and love halo forever but i am totally done with this shit too to be honest.

    Just talking about Halo's current status makes me sad. Just thinking about all the great memories I had with my friends in custom games and co-op campaign in Halo 3 and Reach are memories that I will never forget. Hell, I met a great friend from playing Halo. In fact, I just met him in real life not too long ago. Just to think that kids that are growing up now won't be able to have this opportunity is kind of depressing.

    • @MrKrusten
      @MrKrusten 8 лет назад +34

      I agree.
      Halo 3 prime (along with other Halo's) was the absolut best time i ever had. There is no game until today, that came even close to the amount of fun i had with Halo. I would starve the entire day, skip school, not go outside and fail my exams just to play more Halo. Now that i think about it, its weird that i have made such close friends over Halo, even though i have never met these people. I remember these nights when we were sitting in custom lobby and xbox party, someone who read the books started talking about the universe and such, and everyone was just mind blown while having a fuck ton of fun with Halo and laughing their sides into oblivion. I remember how chasing achievements were a race between you and your friends.I remember how everyone was nuts about reaching 50 Rank in ranked games, or acquiring the Hayabusa and Recon armor. I remember how it took us 6 hours of insulting, shouting and nerv rubbling hours to complete a single campaign mission with all Skulls activated.
      How RedvsBlue and "100 ways of dying in Halo" were our TV shows.
      How MasterChief was always refered to in god tier quotes, and not Chuck Norris.
      Halo, hands down the literal best fucking time of my life. I will never forget this time and i will never forget Halo.
      Saying that, it also feels fucking painful to know that these times are over. And worse is, you know they will never come back. It doesnt matter if they release a new Halo that is just as good as the old ones. The Prime in 2007-2010 are impossible to copy. It saddens me so much, my heart rate goes up and i feel warm and comfy when i watch old Halo videos on youtube.
      One of the few things i will probably still remember when im an old man

      There are still good games such as Wither 3 , Last of Us, Skyrim etc. It really depends on the game you grow up playing since childhood memories are the most powerful. Some grew up playing Xbox while others were with Nintendo. For me, Halo Reach takes the cake when it comes to multiplayer due to forge and custom games

      who else thinks gaming is starting to die? all the AAA games are slowly dieing off and losing fans, here are some examples: Halo, Call Of Duty, Forza Horizon 3, ect. all of these AAA games are slowly becoming sad and loaing fans. and all of the devs are slowly losing intrest luke TF2, No new Elder Scrolls, Short campains, no new cs game yet. i hope these games survive but really all i see left is titanfall2 and battlefield. most other games are dieing.

  • @marchindley9856
    @marchindley9856 8 лет назад +291

    343 can't even get the look of Halo right. The new Spartans look like something out of Mass Effect for God's sake. Halo takes a LOT of Inspiration from old school Sci-fi films, such as Aliens. Big, bulking, clunky old school Science Fiction fits Halo SO much more than the stupid Neon, sleek, simple and clean art Style those 343 idiots are going with.
    I mean look at the Assault rifle from Halo 1. It was bigger than half of the Marines carrying it! It wasn't a gun made for 'quick and clean' Kills. It was made as a counterweight against superior Covenant Shield tech. Just mow them down until they stop moving. not this retarded 'One shot one kill" with iron sights and fucking ACOG scopes. And very liberal use of the words "Tactical' and 'Strategic'
    Or if you like, The Pillar of Autumn. Which is basically a huge floating gun with a Spaceship strapped to it. It's not high tech. It's not sophisticated. But it IS raw firepower which is what the Humans NEEDED to level the playing field against the Covenant. None of this pew pew fire the lasers crap that the newer Halos are going for.
    It was grey, bleak and dystopian. Like the tech of a desperate people trying to find SOME minor advantage that they could use to stave off extinction. It alone added more to the world of Halo and the Struggle of the UNSC.
    Now contrast this with the intro to Halo 5. A squad of generic Space Marine (Yes I know what irony is) literally running down a mountain, firing seemingly at random whilst all around them enemies blow up in a sickening orgy explosions. No feel for the stakes. No overview of what is even going on. At first look you can't even tell who's fighting who for God's sake. And It's just bad. Really, really bad.
    I could write for days about all the things wrong with the 343 Halos. The iron sights, the weapon skins, the perk system, the micro transactions. the fucking Prometheans or whatever the fuck. All of it is just awful.
    I know this probably has to do more with the Microsoft slave master, sat in the background throwing money and ever faster approaching deadline dates at the developers but for fuck's sake - Respect your fans.
    You lost your way 343. Just give up now before you fuck it up even more.

    • @shelby-pit9778
      @shelby-pit9778 8 лет назад +7

      Marc Hindley 'respect your fans'. 343's big fuck up was not making its core fanbase happy. They should've devoted a playlist for the old style Halo experience: no sprint with smaller maps (like lookout/ascension/etc).

    • @lewisrobinson4560
      @lewisrobinson4560 7 лет назад +10

      Very well written comment you have here. You were dead on about the 'big clunky weapons and armour'. What 343 should release is a fps halo game set in the early times of the covenant war. Massive battles with tanks, marines, wraiths and brutes would be an absolute marvel.

    • @nomorepartiezz
      @nomorepartiezz 7 лет назад +27

      lots of people think its nitpicking but you're so right: the art style of halo was a huge part of its identity and experience. comparing halo 4s armor customization to halo reach's is like a punch to the gut. they look like fucking colorful power rangers with overly designed helmets. like a fucking 12 year old drew it.

    • @ColonelFatass3
      @ColonelFatass3 7 лет назад +1

      Microsoft doesn't really have a say on the art style or the style of the game though, that's all 343's decision making. That's not to say that Microsoft doesn't have it's fair share of bullshit either.

      +DerezzedFall "if the advertisement of the game wasn't misleading"
      Well they did make it seem like the game was about BOTH Chief and the new guy investigating some disastrous event that appeared as though Chief was framed for it. That, if it had been what ended up being made, would have been an interesting plot; simple story of two guys, one investigating a crime and the other trying to clear his name, but allow for some lore to be the backbone, but hopefully not as confusing as this Hyperbithero guy said Halo 4 was.

    The one comment that I'd like to add to this video is that the mistakes that 343 Industries has made with the installments of their version of the series demonstrate a profound misunderstanding, or complete non-understanding of what made Halo so great in the first place, and that is _very_ worrying for the series moving forward.

      Yeah copying Halo

    • @Restorating
      @Restorating 5 лет назад

      Shooters are regressing because of Battle Royales plain and simple. On top of that Halo 4 wasn't even bad. I was actually happy with the direction its just Halo 5 kinda stopped that momentum really hard. I was expecting Halo 4 to be 300x worse than it was. We all knew Cortana was on the verge of going Rampant. We all knew the Forerunners weren't totally gone because the Iso-Didact we talked about in Halo 3 terminals and he was ON the Ark when he activated the rings. So we knew there was another Didact in general and not ALL Forerunners were wiped.
      It was all laid out for everyone. People just ignored the fact that these things existed until 343 hit on them. The Precursors were already put out as a race before Halo Reach was even out. Like all of this information EXISTED before the end of the Halo Trilogy and it was only a matter of time before someone whether it was 343 or Bungie got to it(which Bungie put most of it down for us). I just think they rushed from 4 to 5 too quickly and got the story aspect which drives Halo so much alongside its multiplayer. People apparently liked the Multiplayer of it alot more than I thought.

      Well, We got a short glimpse of a halo ring in Halo 5's legendary ending also in Escalation we got to see a flood spore on board of The Spirit of Fire. Maybe (I HOPE) they bring back elites in Halo 6 but move it away from Arena Playlists (Or make a Sangheili only playlists just like in Reach) also 343i should say that there's a Human and Sangheili joined training simulations since 343i wants to make the multiplayer canon (Which is stupid).
      Even though Halo 5 was a BIG dissapointment, I still have few hopes that 343i can make Halo 6 a MUCH better game than Halo 5, I don't even care if they delay Halo 6. All I want is a "Halo" game from 343i.

      It is sad to see that Halo isn't in its prime, but I feel like this is because Halo was so revolutionary. Halo CE was one of the first shooters of it's kinda and Halo 2 set the multiplayer system that pretty much every shooter uses now. Halo 4 and 5 are good games but it's sad to see that Halo isn't nearly as big as it was.

    343 is just missing the big marks. For every step forward they take, they take 2 back. My problems with Halo 5 are: Lack of Splitscreen. Complete lack of playlists online. (No Social). Tiny maps. No dedicated big team battle maps. (I am not a fan of the forge maps). Yes the dlc is free, however some of the maps are just remixes of other maps. Campaign focuses on Locke instead of Chief. At least make it like Halo 2 where the Arbiter and Master Chief both had half of the campaign. Too much focus on e-sports. Req system being the method to unlock customization. No Firefight. The story is a little bit confusing if you don't read the books and read all of the comic books between games.
    343 just needs to get their shit straight. They can do some things good. Halo 5's Gameplay is very good. Much better than Halo 4. The soundtrack was way better than Halo 4 as well. It's just missing the marks of what made the older Halo games Halo. I thought that after halo 4, 343 would learn from all of the feed back and criticisms to make a GREAT Halo game. However, that was not the case. I just Hope Halo 6 makes up for all this. I just thought Halo 3 had the perfect ending. Now it's all being hashed out just so Microsoft can get more money.

  • @SawedOffLaser
    @SawedOffLaser 8 лет назад +16

    Fuck, that soundtrack still gives me chills whenever I hear it. There was something so awesome and unique about that music when I first heard it, and most things after it really failed to sound so epic. Credit to Marty O'Donnell for some of the best composition in gaming.
    And yeah, I agree with everything you said in this video. Halo's competition was becoming more like it, and yet it decided to become more like it's competition. I honestly think the franchise is just tired, and either needs a break or to be concluded for good. I haven't bought and played a Halo game since 3, and despite that I am sad to see the franchise where it is now.
    Hopefully the new Doom is a true return to form that shows everyone how to be a real sci-fi shooter.

    Halo 6 needs the following if it were to really revive itself to it's former glory:
    *Build an engine designed for 60fps AND 30fps splitscreen
    *Have all core gametypes, forge, weapons, and customisation features that make Halo ON LAUNCH DATE
    *Have a fire browser integrated sharing system ON LAUNCH DATE
    *Working servers ON LAUNCH DATE
    *A campaign that is both clear in story and fully involving
    *A campaign that is at least 12 hours on first playthrough on normal difficulty
    *HALO RINGS
    *FLOOD
    *PLAYABLE ELITES
    *THEATER THAT WORKS
    Halo 5 multiplayer wise was a couple of steps in the right direction, just needed to actually reach its goal.

    • @Atomix_117
      @Atomix_117 8 лет назад

      +Mattuiop What really needs to happen is Halo on PC so people don't have to worry about piece of crap consoles that can't do splitscreen. Also with the way the Halo engine works, it just won't play normally but at 30 fps, there is stuff tied to the framerate which if the framerate is cut in half, the animation of the stuff tied to the framerate will be cut in half. Fallout 4 and Skyrim have the same issue.

    • @mattuiop
      @mattuiop 8 лет назад

      +Atomix117 I don't think pc has ever done split screen like halo for a few reasons. that's what consoles have advantage over to pcs. built for social entertainment on the couch/bedroom.

    • @TheWeion
      @TheWeion 8 лет назад

      +Mattuiop A lot of PC games can do splitscreen: store.steampowered.com/tag/en/Split%20Screen/#p=0&tab=NewReleases
      Here is DiRT 3 on PC doing Splitscreen in an identical fashion to how the console game (Halo) would do it: ruclips.net/video/uXqenwCC56o/видео.html
      PC gamers don't even need their PC in the living room, they can just use a streaming device like Steam Link to stream it to their TV and use Wireless controllers to play, it is just as built for social entertainment as a console, it is just up to the user to make it that way.

      *gameplay wise, that would only be useful in campaign, there should be no 30fps in multiplayer if there is someone else that is playing at 60fps
      *i agree
      *I agree
      *I agree
      *Being more specific, they need to get rid of the theatrical elements of the recent Halo games, such as the cut scenes, what made Halo campaigns so great, was that they were a playground for the player to experience the gameplay. Create interesting, diverse, intelligent enemies. The story was more so an excuse to go the next environment to kill more enemies, so it needs to be clear, but not necessarily simple.
      *If my previous advise is taken, then they can focus on creating interesting levels, and place enemies accordingly, instead of focusing on cutscenes and jaw dropping backdrops. This would inevitably lead to a "longer" campaign
      *Halo rings not needed, but would be cool, Requiem was cool, but they needed to do a better job exploring the world, similar to Halo 1
      *Flood would be great, but need to expanded upon, creating diverse variations of flood
      *Not needed, but I think if they were integrated the same way Reach had the elites playable, it would work
      *I agree
      Halo 6 needs to remove sprint, and focus on maps, and focus on map balancing, Halo 5 multiplayer is almost on the complete other polar end of the spectrum of where the multiplayer needs to be.

    Halo's story was savour the flood, 343 took that away. They need to bring it back with that adrenaline pumping feel that we all got during the mission in halo combat evolved when the flood was introduced, I also want more characters like sergeant Johson. And if 343 is gonna try to focus on chief and him being more human, they need to express that emotion somehow.

      You know, when people talk about the Flood -- on the aspect of their possible return -- people seem to forget that Halo 3 exists. Did anyone here, in the comment section of this video, played Halo 3 before 2010?? Did anyone gave Halo 3 a try on the MCC? 343i never took away the "pumping" feeling because the Flood were finished off, in Halo 3, presumably. Most, if not all of the Flood army, telepathically led by the Gravemind were destroyed following the obliteration of Installation 04B, subsequently damaging the Ark and closing the portal between the Milky Way Galaxy and the latter. Regardless if the Flood are possibly still alive, they are very far away from the Milky Way Galaxy and might have starved to death. So if y'all wanna' find somebody to blame, regarding the "sudden" absence of the Flood, I would suggest y'all point them fingers at Halo's previous developer, Bungie.

While both the Covenant and the UNSC take better precautions now that they know the flood exists (Flood VISR in Halo 5), there are still many forerunner worlds out there. Installation 05 had a flood outbreak because maintenance stopped at some point, and then the containment malfunctioned (going off what I have read from maps and such). The same thing can happen on another Halo installation, or even a shield world, like what happened in Halo Wars. The infection was all over that planet, and in it as well.
      Speaking of Halo Wars, a flood infection form was seen on the ship in one of the canon comics about the game, meaning the Flood can possibly return in Halo Wars 2.
      The Gravemind was stopped, but not every bit of the flood has died out, and with the little amount of time it took the Gravemind to convert high charity into a flood fortress, it obviously reproduces very quickly. It is still a very real threat, just dormant.

      Spoilers? Nay (to someone else perhaps), I'm familiar with the big story outside of the games, even though I never read any of the Halo books.
      I am aware that there are still other Installations and other Shield Worlds of possible Flood infestations like in Halo 2 and Halo Wars. However, just because 2401 Penitent Tangent failed to keep the Flood contained and sterilized on Halo Installation 05, that doesn't mean it is very liked to happen on other Installations. Don't forget that without the Gravemind, the Flood are at a primitive state rather than advanced, mind you. So, they won't be able to break free from containment, especially now that Humanity is no longer distracted from fighting a genocidal war against the Covenant; they most likely helped the monitors and sentinels, on other Installations, sterilize the primitive stated-Flood since it is said that the Reclaimers have visited most Installations for decommissioning, heavily glimpsed in Halo 4.
      It is very likely that all of the Flood have been sterilized on other Installations.
      However, as for the possible infestation on other Shield Worlds, it is possible no doubt on a 50% chance of likelihood. But I don't know, I mean, it is literally called a Shield World for a reason: To keep the Flood from invading and infecting the Forerunners. Yes, that doesn't mean it is impregnable but that also doesn't mean that most of em' were breached. The Forerunners did build their Shield Worlds effectively. So there is another 50% chance that there were only less than two of the Shield Worlds to have been heavily infested. But if there are perhaps other Shield Worlds heavily infested by any means, and are still a very real threat as you claim, then why are they not spreading? If they have infested other Shield Worlds without even being discovered at first hand, then they must not have been dormant, but at an advanced stage, able to command infested ships with the help of a Gravemind. Obviously that has not happened during the Post-Covenant War Conflicts. So I don't think there are any Flood on other Shield Worlds, nor are there any of em' on the Milky Way Galaxy.
      However, it is said that many of them have went into exile from the Milky Way Galaxy after their temporary defeat by the Humans during the Human-Flood War before the Humans' War with the Forerunners, millenias ago. It is possible that, even after their return to the milky Way Galaxy, most of them infested an entire galaxy for themselves to stay exiled. So, there is room to say that they are still alive but once again exiled, following their defeat on March 3rd, 2553.
      I personally don't want the Flood back yet, I want them to return on the next trilogy, after Halo 6 and after a couple of spinoff and standalone Halo fps games for the Reclaimer Saga.

    They just need to can 343. Garbage company, they have no idea what they're doing with the franchise, no idea how to please the majority or their audience, and the saddest part about that is the fact that the majority of their audience (the dedicated halo fan base) have been telling them exactly how to fix the franchise since 2012.

    Honestly, there are 2 reasons why Halo no longer does so well, and it's because of 1) Over-saturation and 2) distinctly lacking innovation.
    Consider: The original Halo defined itself by it's layout, it's limits on player weaponry, a whole host of aspects that defined what Halo was to be. A step away from the Doom and Quake styled games that allowed players to move at ridiculous speeds around samey maps, carrying every single weapon they could carry and slaughtering their way through legions of enemies (this is not to say this is a bad design for a game, Doom and Quake still hold up today as being ridiculously fun and engaging as you salughter your way through Hell/Troggs), the original Halo had allies, vehicles, map variety and a whole host of fun and new aspects that made it so engaging.
    Halo 2 came out, and added a whole host of new features (such as Duel Wielding and vehicle destructibility) and a variety of massive, distinctive maps that were a pleasure to play through. Sure, there were a number of flaws, but they were overlooked because Bungie was innovating by adding new aspects to the gameplay itself, while keeping the story on-track via wonderful design and character design (although Chief isn't exactly the most engaging type of character, i.e the almost silent protagonist shooty guy, Bungie certainly made him work and drew players into his story).
    Halo 3's release was utterly magnificent. Bungie put more than a metric ton of work into making the game work, taking lessons from the past two games to hone what they wanted to do down to the very edge. The maps were detailed and drew players in while stilling being fun to play on, the campaign was a terrific send off to all the characters they created by wrapping up their character arcs and ending on a wonderful bang. The gameplay itself was greatly improved through the addition of multiple pieces of equipment that drastically changed how in-game fighting could go and the addition of specific heavy weapons that traded speed and utility for overpowering firepower. It was, and still is (in my opinion at least), the pinnacle of the series to date. Even the advertising was excellent, with the Believe series and the number of live-action adverts and Landfall being engaging to even outside players.
    After that, Halo ODST was a testament to the development of their skill in story telling and understanding of the key fundamentals of the shooter genre, Reach was the wonderful capstone of their work on the series as a whole by going back to where it all began and Halo Wars was a (sadly underrated) foray into the unknown future of what Halo could be.
    All of these works by Bungie explored new aspects of their work, added new features pulled boring ideas or re-tweaked broken ones to make them work, and kept everything in a tightly defined narrative within a wider universe.
    Halo 4 however, lacked these aspects. Instead of innovating and bringing new ideas to the table, they fell back to the ones used by their competitors, and the series suffered for it, just as Halo 5 did. Not to mention, they tried to cram the wider universe in in a way that ignored the focused narrative of the original games and instead tried to create a sprawling universe that just didn't fit the series. Is that universe interesting? Hell yes! Are the multitude of alien races fascinating? Hell yes! Was the implied ancient conflict between the Forerunners and Flood intriguing in it's ancient historical way? Hell yes! Do I care about the Forerunners in specifics, returning the Elites to being the enemies after the conclusion of Halo 3 and a slew of other aspects we should have never seen? No.
    The series, and the market, also suffered on account of complete over-saturation (as you stated) and a desire to be either the new "Halo" or be the "Halo-killer".
    Halo, when it was released, was remarkable. It was one of the defining games that helped to paved the way for shooters to be more than just shooting, alongside other greats such as the Half-Life series, by having an interwoven narrative and interesting characters. And after that, everybody else tried to do the same, without understanding what made that so engaging.
    Ultimately, Halo has fallen because it's overstayed it's welcome. The story was finished, the plot wrapped up. The gameplay had hit it's peak, and all it's innovations to the industry had soaked into the wider world of video games. Halo, from the original all the way to Halo Wars were, and are, iconic. But now? It's been reduced to another sci-fi shooter clamoring for attention among a dozen other shooters, a plot that lacks the potential gravitas that the originals did.
    It's sad to say, but honestly? Halo should have been put to rest after Halo Wars.
    Given time and rest in the market, and Bungie (if they could ever be persuaded) coming back to their baby, I think the return of Halo 4 would have been fantastic. But as it is now? Nah son, nah.

      +Waaaghtatic Yes, exactly! Make Reach the final fps entry and Halo Wars as the weird but really amazing console rts. The story was wrapped up, the games had been fun. But no, they had to reap the cash cow, now didn't they?

    • @TheOrionStar
      @TheOrionStar 8 лет назад

      +Waaaghtatic reach was the start of the decline. What makes a game series stay popular? changing it slightly but keeping the gameplay the same because that what people bought it for. halo reach they completely fucked with the gameplay and it wasn't halo anymore and it's never been the same since. I don't think it will ever return to the basic arena shooter it once was they feel they have to keep adding crap to create interest.
      Gears of war is another example, for 3 games they had the same gameplay and then judgement came out and completely changed the gameplay and it ended the series. COD has basically the same gameplay and is going strong as ever. I do believe though that FPS's are innovation'd out, i mean what more can you do with them.

    Even with all of 343's changes, Halo still remains totally unique IMO. Something about the combat meta is just not seen in any other game. Like how you kill an enemy in a clearly defined number of shots. It's very rhythmical. How both you and your opponent participate in the encounter in slow motion. "Well, I just missed a shot so I'm going to have to pull off a neat strafe here to put me back on top, and if I can't, throw this plasma nade and hope it sticks for the kill from the grave."

      +Quarky_ Exactly, but lately these are the few remaining vestiges of a design ethos shift. the oh so important element of managing space and distance in a relatively slow and imprecise fps is what made the orginal halo so incredible. fps on the console (especially pvp) was seen as near impossible before call of duty put people in twitch gameplay corridors and halo incorporated the input restrictions of a controller into the design of their game.

    If only Halo got the DOOM treatment. Not saying the mechanics should be the same, but I mean focusing on what people loved about the original games, and including clever mechanics and downright fun features without worrying about what conventions a first-person shooter should stick to. If DOOM could incorporate melee finishers into the fast-paced and highly-responsive nature the franchise was known for, then surely Halo could make a comeback and cut down on all the fluff like scripted gameplay segments and the unnecessary emphasis on a "deep" story?

    • @SolidSnake684
      @SolidSnake684 8 лет назад +5

      NintendanGX Funny you mentiom that, because while playing Doom, especially when using the starting shotgun, I kept being reminded of Halo. The smoothness of the aiming, the jumping, the feel of the weapons, it all felt so similar.

    • @HKRNAME1
      @HKRNAME1 7 лет назад

      NintendanGX I completely agree with you. The focus on any video game should be the gameplay first and story second. However, where DOOM has a very subtle and minimal story, Halo always had a good strong story to it but it was never super in depth and didn't require external knowledge to understand. If the gameplay mechanics of Halo could be returned to the original games, and an interesting story was put in place, but in such a way it isn't shoved in your face or way over your head, I think Halo could experience some success again. That being said, my faith in 343 to do so is nonexistent and I truly believe Halo Reach was the last Halo game worth playing

I feel like 343i is banking too hard on the "EPICNESS" of the narrative and not the adventurous fun of the originals. That being said, 343i also brought in the best forge mode in the series, and the gunplay still feels great; so regardless of how I feel of Bungie's departure I'll still keep holding onto the series in the long-run.

    What I don't like about the story of Halo 5 is how they want you to read the books to actually understand what's going in the current events. To me, that is just lazy. Not that the extended universe is bad, but they should never be used as main plot points for the game because there are people who never read or just not interested the books, let the game tell its own story then have the books extend its lore.

      It's because of the Generations of the Spartans in the lore. The Spartans in Reach were Spartan III's *cheaper versions of II basically). And in 4/5 they're Spartan IV's, designed to look more futuristic etc. But yeah I can understand where you're coming from.

    Ok, I just want to spill It out and just say... I am a HUGE big Halo fan. I think what 343 Industries are missing out is the "Feel" & "environmental" aspect from this franchise. Seriously , what better way did Bungie make Halo, Halo?
    The environments, that has a feel & uniqueness to them?
    Along with some great composed soundtrack?
    A mysterious set of cinematography in-game that doesn't feel very forced?
    That was why in the previous games, it worked so fucking well! Y'know, I sometimes just get the strange feeling that WE as the fans aren't their audience anymore and that they aren't as passionate about the license. I It's a little harsh for me to say this, but I don't know what they are trying to accomplish here if they don't remember a GODAMN THING ON WHAT MADE HALO SO GREAT!!!!!!!!!!

    For me, one of Halo's major failures in recent games is it's been attempting to develop these characters and make them show emotion and utterly failing at doing so. I can't name a single Spartan IV except Buck and Palmer. There has also been no replacement for Sgt. Johnson, who was a perfect counter to Chief, being loud, spotlight loving, and playful to Chief's cold, calculating, almost apathetic demeanor.
    343 has been trying to make Chief show emotion. But I feel they've forgotten that the reason Spartan IIs show little emotion isn't because they don't feel it but rather because all of their training and traumatizing mission experiences have dampened their social skills. Hell, Halo 4 even admitted that Spartan IIs are basically high functioning sociopaths!
    Also, if 343 wanted Chief to show some emotion, then why didn't they use the appearance of Blue Team in Halo 5 to do just that? I mean Blue Team, John-117's childhood friends show up and he's just like, meh, that's cool I guess. HUGE missed opportunity!

    Destiny? A bigger, better shooter? CHRIST no!! Anyone who ever played the original Bungie Halo's will see right through Destiny. It's story is fractured, it's content is spread thin. It's basically a money trap for people who played Halo once or twice and thought "Bungie? They seem good." Bungie have completely let down the gaming community and their loyal followers (I myself included) with the trash that goes by the name Destiny. I played Destiny since Day One and literally none of the at least 40 people I played with then are still playing. Bungie continues to screw over loyal followers with "bundles" such as the Taken King, which was basically a massive "Fuck You" to us.

    I'm sorry but I can't get behind the community these days, there's so much hypocrisy going around. All my years with halo since 2004 I always remember hearing people complain about how halo looks so cartoony and for kids, from halo 1 to halo Odst, when halo reach came out people complained about it being too gray, when halo 4 came out it found a balance between the colorful originals and the grayness of reach, and people still say the art sucks. Dudes I was there in the thick of it.. It saddens me to see all this contradicting going on in the halo community. At this point I've given up on listening to nitpicking of halo because at this point it's become over saturated with nitpicks and no constructive criticism.

    • @carloscontreras8431
      @carloscontreras8431 8 лет назад +4

      I also want to add on how this whole thing about halo falling apart, this has been going on since halo 2. I remember the mixed reception of halo 2 and how people hated the story and hated the arbiter. I remember halo 3 and how people hated it's story and how they hatred equipment, saying how it broke the game, but I also remember the community wanting arbiter to have his own story like in halo 2... See the contradiction here? People talk. about halo 3 being great when even halo 3 had a mixed reception. The majority of people who played halo 3 were newbies to the halo universe and community, lots of people forget this.
      My point is... This isn't anything new, what happened to halo? Nothing, the same thing that's been happening to halo since halo 2. Nothing's actually changed.

    • @Om3gaW3apon
      @Om3gaW3apon 8 лет назад

      Carlos Contreras To be fair the grey issues with Reach was that Bungie used far too many forge maps in MP. This lead to most games having the same palette which would get dull. It was like playing the same map all day from that perspective. That is not a contradiction. If any other game did that it would have the same criticism. It was about the extreme overuse of Forge rather than actual maps made with good aesthetics.

    • @carloscontreras8431
      @carloscontreras8431 8 лет назад +2

      Ok I understand but that's not the point. The point is that people have been complaining about halo since halo 2. They will continue complaining until there's no more halo to be released. Some people will love some halo games and others will love other halo games.

    • @Om3gaW3apon
      @Om3gaW3apon 8 лет назад +3

      Carlos Contreras People complaining in general shouldn't matter to you if they just have different taste. Same with literally everything else on Earth. But with Halo the legit complaints have always been legit. Also Bungie has never addressed many, if any, of the issues and each iteration they were made worst or more were introduced. Bungie's attitude has always been to largely ignore the community and do what they want, which hurt them so badly in Destiny that they publicly made promises to finally fix that little bad habit on theirs. For example bloom in Reach was horrible but it was a long time coming if you paid enough attention to the patterns between each game and the complaints about consistency and individual skill gap.
      To pretend that people complain just to complain is a straw man fallacy. There have been many valid issues with Halo and one big disappointment with 343 is that they doubled down on Bungie's mistakes and refuse to budge. If this was Bungie it would be business as usual but 343 was the community's hope for change. Not many people were exactly upset Bungie was out due to their long history of making things worst in Halo.
      Although Halo 5 is better than Halo 4, they still refuse to budge on bad design and practices that only ignorant developers unaware of what made Modern Warfare 2 successful in the first place. Hint...it was Activision's marketing not the game and it has taken too long for other developers chasing that dramatic sales boost that MW2 had over previous CODs to realize that. (Which is a effect that lead to most of COD's hate.)
      Also Halo 3 at its prime has yet to be matched by any Halo afterwards and Halo 3 was borderline broken as far as netcode goes.

    Well, what turned many people off in 343i's Halo's was that they tried to change things that made Halo unique.
    People didn't like Halo 4 because it didn't feel like Halo, instead it felt like Mass Effect. The music didn't sound like Halo. The multiplayer felt like CoD, since it takes no skill and had killsteaks that was made for casuals. The story is good, but it felt like it was lacking something, I just can't put my finger on what it lacked though...
    People didn't like Halo 5 because of the removal of splitscreen and the introduction of Microtransactions. The story felt off: focusing more on Locke, a somewhat bland character, instead on focusing on the main mascot for Halo Master Chief. The music felt like it was trying to be Halo. Multiplayer was good though...
    Hopefully, Halo Wars 2 and Halo 6 will be amazing, if only 343i listens to the Halo fans and gives them what they want.

    I have been a huge Halo fan ever since Halo 2 came out. I was five around there and I was allowed on my Xbox back in 2004. Halo reach was my personal all time favorite, but after that, Halo went down the drain. Me and my friends got Halo 4 opening night and played the campaign, after we finished we were honestly disappointed. But Halo 5 however, 343 basically destroyed the whole armor system to me. Now, we have to focus on 'slot machines'! I was honestly happy about the memories of reach pack, but I would never pay $14.99 or $2.00 so you would be faced to go to matchmaking and having to spend a few days trying to collect enough credits to buy the packs. TBH, I don't plan on buying halo 6 when it comes out and I will just wait to hear about Halo Wars 2 and maybe just get a special edition just like the original.

      I look at it simply as this. I played Halo 2 because of its great map and gametype setups, also its simplistic yet engaging combat including vehicles. How you can strategize getting your bomb into the base at Burial Mounds or the flag out of the base in Headlong.No bullshit like a bubble shield or thruster to save someone from dying. No random damage boost on your gun, or an iron-sight scope on your Assault Rifle. Now it's "hey bros, what req card did you get for this generic looking armor?". I don't care about emblems, armor, or skins especially for the the main piece of the pie. They're lazy and those who buy into that crap are just as pathetic to me.

    When you play the original Halo campaigns they look, feel, and sound eerie and mystical whereas the new ones... Not so much, they look, sound, and feel like you're playing a Hollywood bastardization of the Halo series.
    More bright colors, explosions, and pointless lore to setup a larger Halo universe kinda like Marvel movies. I don't need Halo to be some formulaic series like Marvel.
    Not to mention the gameplay which if it didn't have Halo on the cover and Spartans in the game then you wouldn't be able to tell the difference between Halo 4/5 and COD.
    Destiny wasn't perfect, but it feels like a better sequel to the Halo series than anything 343 has come out with so far. Hell even the remastered Halo games were made more annoyingly bright and colorful.

  • @ShadowOfTheVoid

    Ironically, the decision to ditch split-screen was a direct consequence of the decision to have the game locked at 60fps. Had Halo remained 30fps like it was from the beginning, then we'd still have split-screen, but somewhere along the line it was arbitrarily decided that 60fps is the new Holy Grail of console gaming that all titles must strive toward at all costs, and, well, here we are. Console gamers' newfound obsession with 60fps comes at a cost. Corners will be cut somewhere. You can't have your cake and eat it too. With the way the game was designed, they simply couldn't make it 60fps *_and_* have split-screen. 343i's own Frank O'Connor admitted this himself. In a discussion on NeoGAF regarding the elimination of split-screen support in Halo 5, he said, and I quote "It's a bummer but 60fps had to take precedence. It's not just aesthetics- the entire simulation is built on that framerate." So there you have it. 343i chose to give priority to 60fps and thus split-screen support was removed. Personally, I don't think the trade-off was worth it, not for the players and not for the health of the franchise.
    60fps might be fine for certain games (e.g., fast-paced twitch shooters like CoD) or even certain genres (e.g., fighting games), but not every game needs it. A historically slow-paced series like Halo never needed anything more than 30fps. A twitch shooter it ain't. Hopefully they bring back split-screen, either by bumping the framerate back down to 30fps (even if only in split-screen) or by finding some way to engineer the game to where it can support split-screen at 60fps. I know several of my friends who I've played Halo with for a long time have made it clear that they are not bothering with Halo 5 specifically because of the lack of split-screen. It's really that big of a deal for some people. They have certainly lost some sales because of the loss of split-screen, and while they may have gained a few new customers, 343i is single-handedly responsible for the series' commercial decline. According to the NPD, Halo 5 was the poorest-selling main series Halo game by far in the U.S., and UK sales figures showed pretty much the same thing. But hey, a few framerate-obsessed elitists on the internet got their precious 60fps, so all's right with the world, I guess.

    • @HyperBitHero
      @HyperBitHero  8 лет назад +22

      Oh yeah, even though we're on consoles generations more powerful than the one halo originally came out on, we can't possibly have a fps with 60fps and coop. Maybe they could have reduced the fps to 30fps while in coop. People would understand and it wouldn't be throwing the baby out with the bath water. For a first person shooter especially, frame rate is very important.

    • @sasuke2910
      @sasuke2910 8 лет назад +3

      +ShadowOfTheVoid They could of just downed the framerate in split screen.
      Perfect Dark/Goldeneye and Black Ops 1 are two games I remember specifically doing this. But the sad truth is graphics now trumps ALL when it comes to consoles, game responsiveness has been on the backburner for years and now apparently graphics are directly responsible for the removal of important game modes.

    • @slvrcobra1337
      @slvrcobra1337 8 лет назад +1

      Yup, that's what made me most angry about that. People whining about 30fps on a console they know isn't powerful enough to support it, and Microsoft going along with it to put up the pretense that it is.

Just "Meh" not even "Fine" ....And it's sad, really sad to see one if not, the best game ever get destroyed by itself, 343 Industries keeps on screwing up man... I really don't know anymore... Fuck... it's heartbreaking... but it's true, everything good has to end someday... it's the only truth...

      You gotta think though, is there really any way to beat the originals? They're too perfect man. And we all grew up with them so that makes it even more difficult to live up to.
      I'd much much rather have these new Halo's than no Halo at all.
      It could be a lot worse.

    The irony is 343i even admitted, to start off with, that they did in fact, recruit people who disliked Halo for a variety of reasons, in order to change it to how they liked it, and force the fans to adapt. Then consider their dumb decision-making for the game itself, their utter incompetence with the release of the MCC, and their outright lying of Halo 5's marketing, and condescending attitude towards anyone who criticised them for it...Quite frankly, its no wonder Halo is a dying franchise. Its being managed by a team of hacks.

    Didn't think I would see Halo on this channel.
    Anyway the problem with 343 Halo is that it's following trends, and lost it's spunk.

    In being too innovative they have alienated the casual gamer.

    basically 343 tried to turn Halo into something that tried to be like Halo.

    maybe halo 4,5 and 6 are just dreams the master chief is having in cryo sleep and then he wakes up and tells cortana he had a horrible nightmare

      I feel like that'd be a giant middle finger to anyone who has enjoyed the story. I never got why people say Halo 4's story was confusing. All you need to know is that there is a guy who wants to turn people into robots, and that Cortanna is dying. Halo 5's story is bad though.

    Interesting fact: there's a work in progress mod that does function right now for H2V called "Project Cartographer" which restores H2V's online functionality and does some more things under the hood (improved netcode, locked at 60FPS, changeable FoV). As well as Custom Edition, a version of Halo PC that lets users create content only limited by their imagination thanks to essentially the very tools used to author the SP and MP maps of Halo. Problem is a lot of Halo "fans" consider these things not worth their time for whatever reason and seem more content to piss and moan about how "Halo should come to PC, come on microsoft please!"
    Also surprised you didn't touch on the REQ system which has mostly negatives complaints from the community when focusing on Halo 5. But I guess you sort of covered it with how they're putting generic FPS mechanics into Halo. Though I think it was someone else who touched on how even the vehicle maps aren't really vehicle friendly and it feels like 343i is trying to shy away from vehicular combat because "E-sports".

    That classic halo music made the halo 5 cutscenes feel 5x better. Literally, martin's music is what made half that traditional halo feel. That gregorian inspired music was lost and the feel was severed due to their poor sound design. Halo 5 still has a wonderful multiplayer though!

    • @leeahare
      @leeahare 8 лет назад

      +Lee TLC I whole heartedly agree with the music and yes Halo 4's sound design was awful in most areas, though Halo 5 had amazing sound design, nearly everything (sound) was a huge improvement over 4.

      +Lee TLC very true! I just hated Halo 4s main screen music that sounded like it was straight from an African war movie. Halo 5 kinda infused the only good Halo 4 track (which I believe was called 117) with the original Gregorian chanting monk them from all the other Halos. Not perfect, but a GREAT step towards the classic sound :j
