That’s the great thing about the John Wick movies, the fights are filmed mostly in one take, no cuts or effects added. Usually they use cuts and stunt doubles so the audience doesn’t notice that it’s not happening in real time. Also, the reloading is real, not only do people run out of bullets and the bullet count is realistic, but when John reloads, Keanu is really doing it that fast. Kane Hodder famously refused to portray Jason Voorhees as someone who would kick a dog, in Jason Takes Manhattan. So, yeah. Even horror villains have to draw the line somewhere...
I don't think the cop was corrupt as much as there was an understanding that John limited the killing to the underworld. An assassin you pay $2M, and has a house like that as a result, doesn't miss a shot like that. He didn't leave Viggo alive. John knew he was dead as soon as the knife went in, knowing where to stab Viggo, just like he knew where to place the knife in himself to do minimum damage. They were able to do wide, continuous shots for the action sequences because they spent months training in fighting and shooting. Keanu learned to shoot using live rounds, switching weapons and reloading in real time.
They address this in The Continental series. The cops are aware and are mandated to leave them alone. One cop ignored the order and went into the Continental, went to the bar and (of course) paid with cash instead of a gold coin. I won't spoil what happened but it's a pretty good series for some backstory on Winston, Charon, and The Continental (and why Winston appears to have a soft spot for John).
That dog looked so cute and loveable. .... There must have been a good reason why it was going to be 'put down'. Hope John doesn't find out the hard way.

@Alcagaur1 i don't think 98% of ppl on here would even know that was kevin Nash in the punisher or the fact that they forgot to switch out the real knife with the prop knife and he got stabbed in that fight scene and just kept going
A few fun facts: In between takes the actor that "killed" the dog would pick it up and cuddle it because he felt so bad scaring it. The dog's trainer/owner in real life renamed the dog "Wick" after the movie became a hit. I heard the dog that John gets from the kennel at the end of the movie is Keanu's dog in real life. When John speaks to Francis outside of the club they are actually talking in code. When John asks how much weight Francis lost, Francis responds in Russian that he lost 27 kilograms, which is roughly 60 lbs. What he was actually telling John was there were 27 guards inside. On a side note I've heard that they the actor either mispronounced or they told him the wrong word for the number 27, and he actually said 20.
John really has several friends in the movie. The guy running the chop shop gives him a drink, information and a car. The hotel manager has a drink with him and then gives him not one but two important tips to guide him on his way. The bouncer he clearly was friendly with and let go. Maybe even the cop. Even poor unfortunate harry seemed like at least a positive acquaintance.
And then the movie ends with him saving a poor dog from demise. You can only catch a glimpse, but on the cage of the dog he took, on the paper, it said "to be put down".
Vigo threw fuel on the fire by having the hit squad go after John at his house. I do love how Willem Dafoe is a great red herring in this movie. Most people just assume he's got bad motives, and it turns out he's actually being a good friend. John's other true friends in the franchise are Marcus, Charon (the concierge), and Aurelio.
This film did such a great job of establishing the character and the world. Even though the action got more and more creative over the series, the original was so important in setting it all up.
The directors of the movie are stunt coordinators as well. The director Chad Stahelski was Keanu's stunt double in "The Matrix". They also provided to Keanu and his costars extensive training in various martial arts so that the principal actors do most of their own stunts, allowing for long continuous takes with minimal cuts. The sequels got even more intense in kung-fu, "gun-fu", and "car-fu" gun and car fighting scenes. You can see online Keanu being trained in multiple firearms disciplines by Taran Tactical, a school buy international championship professional shooter Taran Butler. He trained Keanu and his costars. He taught them marksmanship, transitioning between weapons, reloads, etc. The movie producers kept track of what weapons the actors were using for a scene, their ammunition capacities, and made it as realistic as possible to show when reloads were needed, unlike movies of the past with what seemed like a "hundred shot revolver" and other unrealistic firearms ammo capacities. The final (for now) installment of the series, "John Wick Chapter 4" has an epic continuous take indoor shootout that, I won't spoil it for you, is a cinematic MASTERPIECE of photography, stunt coordination, and sound, that will leave you wanting to "rewind" and watch over and over. Only a couple of cuts but that scene has TWO long takes! I can't wait to see your reactions to the next three John Wick films!
So glad you finally started this series. Look forward to your reactions to the others. Keanus firearms training videos are worth a watch too. He goes hard to be able to do the action work himself. A hero that reloads is also a nice touch vs. older action movies where the hero has effectively unlimited ammo.
Something to take note...the bouncer at the Red Circle (the one that John Wick didn't kill) was played by WWE wrestler Kevin Nash....Francis (Kevin Nash) who spoke Russian told John Wick that he lost over 60 kg...this was a code to indicate the number of security, thugs, henchmen inside the building, and because of this, John told him to take the night off... The gold in the movie is the so called "High table's currency" each coin represents a payment for a service, weapons, favors, goods, etc. they do not use regular currency for any of these services.... All the 4 movies are continuous and connected... There is even a short tv series entitled "The Continental" a 3 episodes showing the origin of the Continental Hotel, and most probably the history of John Wicks parents and how he is related to Winston.... Also...if you remember what Winston said to John when they were in the "CD Underbelly" they have rules.. no business shall be conducted in Continental grounds (this includes killing, accepting contracts, etc.) the continental is a safe haven for Assassins...another rule is in John Wick Chapter 2, every marker must be honored...
John wick was an original creation and reminded the world how action movies are supposed to be. This is the product of a dedicated star working with a director who understands fight scenes. The director was the stunt coordinator for the matrix trilogy and knew Keanu for almost 20 years when they started working together for this one
I’ve seen this movie a hundred times …. I still think the cop “ jimmy “ was not corrupt … but knew John and trusted him .,, knew him in a way of respect …. (See Jw 2) ….
There are a lot of theories on the relationship. Maybe the police know that the assassins take care of their own "business" and don't involve civilians. Or maybe they're part of the organization, or maybe Jimmy himself is an assassin and being a cop is his "day job" or cover. (we see in other movies where some assassins have civilian jobs). And there's the possibility that they have a history, maybe Wick saved his life at some point. That's part of the fun of not having everything spelled out, you get to try and figure things out yourself.😁
@@dr.burtgummerfan439 In real life the Mafia and local cops had a "we will leave you alone as long as your crimes don't bring physical harm to civilians" relationship. That's the reason why the mob didn't deal in drugs right away. The mob had a code to live by and if someone broke the code then they were dealt with.
Yes, he wasn't as much corrupt as 'tuned in'. "Do I hafta do paperwork? Tied up 18 fellows in mass homicide and reporters?" Wick has lived in this house long enough so only one police car arrives for a 'noise complaint' - but since he's been there a while, why don't neighbors NOT phone in gunfire alerts from John Wick's house? THAT is the real question.
Personally I think Jimmy's understanding was seeing the body behind John, if he'd have done his job, it would have been dinner reservations for 13.... Discretion is the better part of valor & staying alive...
He finished Vigo's son quickly in the end, but he had to spend all that time running and fearing and fleeing. There's more than one way to die slowly. Vigo is dead. John severed the brachial artery. Fatal without immediate intervention.
when "john wick" came out, it was released to extremely little promotion or fanfare, despite keanu starring in it. it became a hit from simply word of mouth and its become one of the greatest movie franchises in history. i mean it. there is not a single bad one in all of the movies. they are all great to fantastic. people have their favorites but no one says any of the john wick movies are bad or terrible or even average.
Only the first is worth watching. It had an emotional core, the love of his wife and the dog. The sequels are just stunts, no real emotional center. Wastes of time.
The knife is stuck in front of Vigo's collarbone and thereby cuts the subclavian vein underneath, causing him to bleed to death in very short time. And if you look closely, you can briefly see Vigo's dead eyes. By the way, he doesn't drive in circles on the airport grounds because he's angry. He's just practicing for chases and the like.
No, he's not practicing. He normally does it as a way to relax, but you can see he's currently right on the edge of committing 'the word youtube doesn't let you say' out of grief. He only just stopped himself from deliberately crashing into the excavation equipment at high speed. It's setting up why he completely flies off the handle when his dog dies - he's only just keeping it together.
@@Scyth0r Whether he is practicing or usually does it to relax, I totally agree with you about the last scene. If I've understood you correctly, for me it's also an attempt to commit suicide. Is that really a word you're not allowed to say on RUclips?
Victor, the right hand man to the son, the one that drowned in the sink, was also in a Marvel project. Daredevil on Netflix. He was the right hand man to The Kingpin.
Yeah, pretty sure all the cops know exactly who John is, and they are afraid of him. You could see the fear in thatyoung cop's eyes after witnessing the bodies on the floor. And then he's got to be wondering if John would allow him to walk away. So he simply says, "I'll leave you be then" and hesitantly walks away, thankful that John is allowing him to go. Crisis averted. Same thing goes for Francis, the hired gun guarding that door at the club. John basically lets him just leave and the man thanks him for not doing what any other hit man probably would have done with a hired gun.
@@Mr.Ekshin Wrong, John never kills anyone who helps him out. He only kills when he has reason to. Francis told him how many of the Russian Mob guys were in "The Red Circle".
Vigo did not drink when his son was in his office. He did not approve of what he did to John. Also Vigo had his liquor from his private stash. The sons was the cheap bottle. That location on Vigo has a major artery. This not only causes him to bleed out, but it puts pressure on the lungs and collapses them. Prompt surgery might give you a chance of living.
a car hit my dog when i was a kid.i took my friend around the back of the house picked up a lead pipe waved my hand in front of his face"the dog had a scar above his eyes and i thought he may be blind"no life for a dog"i would have ended my dog then tried to end the driver even though i was a kid.probably an over reaction but hey!!i tottaly get you .
"Francis" was a Hall of Fame Wrestler for the WWE (Kevin Nash... Diesel"). John intentionally let Iosef go in the Red Circle, because he wanted him to know True Fear.
I loved your reaction to this, Madison. It's not based off a book or Manga, it's an original concept. The sequels are good too, there's a great world build, without giving any spoilers.
Actually, it's very loosely based on a true story about the dog of Marcus Latrell (Lone Survivor) being killed by punks after he returned to the states.
If you're not familiar with Keanu he's taken a huge leap from his beginnings you should look into him..that's all him...the gun training.. driving.. martial arts.. he's quite an impressive human being IRL...the other John wick movies get crazier and crazier which is hard to comprehend actually 😅👍🔥
What most people miss is the fact that they didn't kill the dog right away. It was able to crawl over to where John was knocked out and cuddle with him then die. You can see the trail of blood leading to him.
Thank you! I'm glad I'm not the only one who knows this. Dogs will often go and stay at their owner's side if they feel their owner is sick or in distress. So when I saw the trail of blood the first time I watched this, it was one of those bits of detail that told me the filmmakers really cared about telling a tragic story.
@@vladyvhv9579 The blood trails would also indicate Daisy crawling. If they were to go so far as to mortally wound the dog, do you seriously think they'd take the time to move her afterwards?
How Many?... I won't tell you the 4 movie total... but Freddy Kruger, Jason, and Michael Meyers with dozens of movies over decades, do not even come close when combined together... In fact the 3 of them had an intervention for John and asked him to work on his anger issues...
Dean Winters, the guy from the mayhem commercials, was in an HBO series called “OZ”. He’s spectacular in that series. It’s one of the most underrated shows in HBO history.
John Wick superfans will say you have to see them all, but I strongly feel this one is the best by far. The rest are basically non-stop fight scenes without the same emotional core.
6:30 John is in full blown grief and playing with the idea of killing himself here. I honestly believe that the only reason he didn't full speed into that plow truck was the puppy that now depended on him.
Hello Madison K. Thames, " John Wick dog #2 " was a Staffordshire Terrier (Pit Bull dog). I believe the card on the cage stated that it was to be euthanized. So, " John Wick " gave it a reprieve. " Hey! "
The guy who played Harry here, he was also on a.grwat show called The Wire. His character was awesome there, too. Pretty much thw whole cast was stellar. Excellent show.
Keanu Reaves has a long list of films. Not all are action movies. Here's a short list, Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, & Bogus Journey, Point Break Original. & Speed. Oh, & Parenthood.
Didn’t see mention of this so here goes! Michael Nyqvist, “Vigo” is also well known for the Swedish thriller trilogy, Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Lance Reddick, the hotel “Concierge,” is also very well known for his role in one of the best-written TV shows ever, The Wire. Sadly, both actors have died, but their work lives on.
The dog that John picked out was a Pitt Bull, but he picked him because (it was hard to see) the dog was scheduled to be put down, so he was saving his life, as his original dog was meant to save his.
"Who is John Wick?" We all asked that same question. Adrienne Palicki also played Wonder Woman/Diana Themyscira/Diana Prince in an unreleased pilot episode. Many people don't realize that in the bath house scene, John was intentionally missing Viggo on purpose to instill more fear in him.
Thats a very fair assessment of bourne. It was the nome de plume of the times. It is what gave us the propensity to question what happens behind politician's
Have you noticed that most of Keanu's movie have the oh! somewhere in it? It is because it is an ohmage back to "Bill and Ted's excellent adventure" To the "Whoa!"
"Be seeing you" is Viggo leaving the "when you join me in hell" unspoken, he's acknowledging that John has killed him with the stab into the shoulder (the artery to your arm passes along your collar bone there, they're almost as major as the big arteries to the muscles in your thighs).
The thing this movie does so well is getting the audience to buy in and cheer for the mass murderer. Follow your butterfly effect through all 4 movies and that is the current body count of killing the puppy.
How do we get women hooked into an ultraviolent action franchise? 1. Cast Keanu Reeves (aka- super handsome nicest guy in the world.) 2. Have him avenge his puppy.
John Wick has a deep understanding of human anatomy. I am confident John stuck the knife into Vigo's right subclavian artery and knew it was a killing blow.
It amazes me the number of people who don't know that the shoulder has a MAJOR artery under it that feeds the lung on that side. Viggo would be dead in under five minutes. Side note: Viggo is the reporter character in the Swedish version of the "Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" (which was massively better than the Hollywood farce).
You can fix your chapters (the last one's name is wrong and says Review.45:49): You don't need to specify when the chapter ends. Only when it begins is necessary to be specified. That's how you fix it.
Reason this movie series so good and had so many cameos is it is directorial debut by the main stunt man and coordinator of the Matrix movies. He has lots of friends.....lol
9:38 That's because it *is* "the mahem guy" as you put it. I first noticed him when he was co-starring in the first season of Law & Order SVU, but his regular appearances in those All State Insurance commercials made his face famous, rather than his name.
There are 2 ultimate drinking games with these films: 1) Every time John Wick performs a head shot or 2) Every time characters refer to each other by their name in conversations Either way, your liver is fck'd.

Marcus warned John by shooting and missing on the side of the pillow would look .. the side Perkins was on ..
9:45 He is the mayhem guy.
I wonder if some police know the local professional assassins, and know to keep clear of those houses (or if necessary, ask for help).
He finished Vigo's son quickly in the end, but he had to spend all that time running and fearing and fleeing. There's more than one way to die slowly.
Vigo is dead. John severed the brachial artery. Fatal without immediate intervention.
The brachial artery is in the arm, John stabbed Viggo in the chest, near the collar bone, hitting the subclavian artery 😉
@@lizardkingof1968🤔 I concur 🖖
12:06 His name is Dean Winters. He’s done a lot of acting over the years, including a prison drama series called Oz.
Yup. Ryan O'Reilly is what comes to mind when I see him
@@kldawson53 They don’t make 'em like that show anymore…
when "john wick" came out, it was released to extremely little promotion or fanfare, despite keanu starring in it. it became a hit from simply word of mouth and its become one of the greatest movie franchises in history. i mean it. there is not a single bad one in all of the movies. they are all great to fantastic. people have their favorites but no one says any of the john wick movies are bad or terrible or even average.
Only the first is worth watching. It had an emotional core, the love of his wife and the dog. The sequels are just stunts, no real emotional center. Wastes of time.
Good one, Madison! This is such a fun series. You will enjoy it all. Thanks for sharing this one!
The shot in the pillow was to warn John about Ms. Perkins entering the room.
R.I.P to the Late and great Lance Reddick (Cheron - the concierge) also in shows such as Bosch, The Wire
With the fights they wanted you to see that it was Keanu the whole time. So no quick cutting.
All 4 John Wick movies are great!
Why do I have a feeling I know the exact moment in the movie when the thumbnail image of Madison will be?
Hey, that cop made sure the noise was going to stop. He did his job. And stayed alive.
I’m no John Wick, but if someone hurt my dog. I’d do my best to be John Wick.
a car hit my dog when i was a kid.i took my friend around the back of the house picked up a lead pipe waved my hand in front of his face"the dog had a scar above his eyes and i thought he may be blind"no life for a dog"i would have ended my dog then tried to end the driver even though i was a kid.probably an over reaction but hey!!i tottaly get you .
"Francis" was a Hall of Fame Wrestler for the WWE (Kevin Nash... Diesel").
John intentionally let Iosef go in the Red Circle, because he wanted him to know True Fear.
The director, Chad Stahelski was the stunt double for Kenue Reeves in the Matrix and for Brandon Lee in The Crow.
I loved your reaction to this, Madison. It's not based off a book or Manga, it's an original concept. The sequels are good too, there's a great world build, without giving any spoilers.
Thanks Adam, glad you enjoyed it!😊
Actually, it's very loosely based on a true story about the dog of Marcus Latrell (Lone Survivor) being killed by punks after he returned to the states.
If you haven't seen it, Keanu Reeves was fantastic in Point Break alongside Patrick Swayze.
He didn't leave Viggo alive. He punctured his subclavian artery.
As soon as they kill his dog, everyone who is watching the movie immediately comes to the same conclusion... "kill 'em all". Awesome.
I'm a cat person, but I understand the sentiment.
A heartbreaking detail.
No, they dragged/kicked it over to him. The blood trails indicate this.
@@vladyvhv9579 The blood trails would also indicate Daisy crawling. If they were to go so far as to mortally wound the dog, do you seriously think they'd take the time to move her afterwards?
Your dog is yours faithful and true to the last beat of their heart. You owe it to them to be worthy of such devotion. ❤
your son took that from me, stole that from me, KILLED THAT FROM ME!
How Many?... I won't tell you the 4 movie total... but Freddy Kruger, Jason, and Michael Meyers with dozens of movies over decades, do not even come close when combined together... In fact the 3 of them had an intervention for John and asked him to work on his anger issues...
You will love the rest of the movies in this great series..
...and don't call me Shirley!!!
Dean Winters, the guy from the mayhem commercials, was in an HBO series called “OZ”. He’s spectacular in that series. It’s one of the most underrated shows in HBO history.
Mayhem's brother is also an actor. He's the "how do you like them apples" guy in Good Will Hunting.
The *only* “fridge wife” trope story that I’ve ever thought the trope wasn’t a lazy crutch
John Wick superfans will say you have to see them all, but I strongly feel this one is the best by far. The rest are basically non-stop fight scenes without the same emotional core.
I agree. The sequels are decent action flicks, but lack the heart of the first film.
Really hope you do all 4 of them Really good movies
Viggo really should have known better than to hire Mr. Mayhem as his assistant. Nothing good could come of that.
" Hey! "
John stabs vital organs, there is not much they can do to live
Not corrupt cops. Just a cop that knows John n is staying the hell out of it for his health lol
The "mayhem guy" was in a bunch of TV shows before he did Allstate commercials.
"Rescue Me" was a great show that he was in. Good ol' FX network back when edgy was in.
Law and Order SVU is what I've seen him in.
OZ
The guy who played Harry here, he was also on a.grwat show called The Wire. His character was awesome there, too. Pretty much thw whole cast was stellar. Excellent show.
Thank you for sharing your reaction to this movie. I appreciate you.
We talked about this...One glass of Red Wine and you adopt 5 PUPPIES!
Keanu Reaves has a long list of films. Not all are action movies. Here's a short list, Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, & Bogus Journey, Point Break Original. & Speed. Oh, & Parenthood.
17:30 - You are right. The character of Ms. Perkins, the female assassin, is played by Adrianne Palicki.
The ‘Mayhem’ guy is Dean Winters. He was a major character in Oz and in Law & Order SVU and others
This will be very cool to Mad's take on this franchise! Many Thanks!
"Who is John Wick?"
We all asked that same question.
It is because it is an ohmage back to "Bill and Ted's excellent adventure" To the "Whoa!"
all the movie's are great can't wait to see you're reaction to the other's
"Be seeing you" is Viggo leaving the "when you join me in hell" unspoken, he's acknowledging that John has killed him with the stab into the shoulder (the artery to your arm passes along your collar bone there, they're almost as major as the big arteries to the muscles in your thighs).
If you like Wick, try The Equalizer with Denzel Washington.
It’s the trail of blood to John left by the puppy, showing his last breath was used trying to get back to John to die… that broke me.
The thing this movie does so well is getting the audience to buy in and cheer for the mass murderer. Follow your butterfly effect through all 4 movies and that is the current body count of killing the puppy.
How do we get women hooked into an ultraviolent action franchise?
1. Cast Keanu Reeves (aka- super handsome nicest guy in the world.)
2. Have him avenge his puppy.
John Wick has a deep understanding of human anatomy. I am confident John stuck the knife into Vigo's right subclavian artery and knew it was a killing blow.
Essentially same fatal wound Maximus inflicted on Commodus
"Be seeing you" didn't strike me as any kind of friendly parting but just an acknowledgement they'll both end up in hell .
@@rimasmuliolis1136gives “The Prisoner” vibes if anyone is old enough to remember that (British) classic
23:41 once out of his room and in the hallway, John couldn't justify violating Continental's rules by canceling her subscription to life.
You can fix your chapters (the last one's name is wrong and says Review.45:49):
You don't need to specify when the chapter ends. Only when it begins is necessary to be specified. That's how you fix it.
Reason this movie series so good and had so many cameos is it is directorial debut by the main stunt man and coordinator of the Matrix movies. He has lots of friends.....lol
Mahem guy was in the sarah connor chronicles series. He is amazing. Great dramatic actor.
9:38 That's because it *is* "the mahem guy" as you put it. I first noticed him when he was co-starring in the first season of Law & Order SVU, but his regular appearances in those All State Insurance commercials made his face famous, rather than his name.
There are 2 ultimate drinking games with these films:
1) Every time John Wick performs a head shot
or
2) Every time characters refer to each other by their name in conversations
Either way, your liver is fck'd.
Keanu is one of the nicest people I've ever met.
Where Wick stabbed Viggo is 100% fatal. It severed the Subclavian Artery
Thanks for watching today, everybody!!
