The funny thing is how this is considered one of the more divisive stories. Like... this is the low tier legends writing. Now compare it to the high tier writing of the Disney Canon
You know despite the Emperor coming back being somewhat a disappointment, for this type of story I don't think it's that terrible, nor do I think it completely destroys Anakin's sacrifice. First off, Luke didn't join Palpatine because he became corrupted, he only did it to figure out a way to destroy the Emperor's Cloning Plan and tear down everything from the inside. While he does do some really stupid things and it caused all of his friends to feel betrayed, he eventually gains their trust again. Plus he retains all of his growth from ROTJ, if he didn't then I think this story definitely would deserve all of the hate it gets. There's also the Emperor himself. Remember this was written 8 years before Phantom Menace was filmed and published in the theaters, so nobody else knew where the franchise was heading! I honestly think Tom had very little to go off of the Emperor because he didn't know his whole background. Just because the Emperor was dead and the Second Death Star was destroyed, didn't mean peace was fully brought to order since there are still some Imperial supporters who refuse the New Republic's rules! Now that the Prequels are out, we can apply all the info from the Force from there, the Clone Wars and the KOTOR games, it does add some semblance into how the Emperor could come back. He did technically died as his original body was destroyed from the Death Star explosion, but before then, who's to say he tried some ritual that allowed his essence to live on? Plus it also helps that if he lost his new weapons, and his cloning facility got destroyed, Palpatine is essentially on the losing end, especially when the Second volume shows that his 'Perfect' Body was beginning to deteriorate. Plus they also play around with the concept from EP6 of Leia becoming a Jedi. When her and Luke confronted the Emperor in this arc, both with Lightsabers in hand, that to me was amazing! This is why I feel like Anakin's sacrifice wasn't a waste, it wasn't just his destiny to destroy the Emperor, it was also to pass on the torch of bringing balance to the Force through his Children and their next generation! Again, I know some people don't like this Arc and they probably won't accept what I'm saying, which is fine. If you still don't like it, then that's okay, it's your opinion. But I would like to at least see why others do without the whole notion of Palpatine coming back, because again, this was written in 1991, 8 years prior to EP1! Also if I'm gonna be frank, I personally think this whole thing was a better Palpatine coming back story than the **** done in Rise of Skywalker, where Disney and crew didn't understand the notion Dark Empire had beside the main highlight of it. Plus at least with Dark Empire, with it taking 6 years instead 20-30 to reveal Palpatine's return. Plus this comic seems to have been written with passion and process unlike the Garbage fest that was the Sequel Trilogy (specifically Last Jedi and Rise of Skywalker)!
It's just too bad that Lucas didn't believe in his story enough to do the prequels from 1987 to 1993, and if he chose to make the 'sequel films', he could have done episodes 7 to 9 from 1997 to 2003, and be the one who made the entire series. Instead, he decides to put the Star Wars story aside, and for what? Howard The Duck? However, despite having Lucas abandon his story, others took up that story through novels like 'Heir To The Empire' (1992) and through Dark Horse Comics 'Dark Empire' (also 1992). Is it really surprising that Lucas used concepts from these novels and comics to make the prequels. Disney is just another example of the many fans that wanted to make those amazing stories and bring them to into canon, like Grand Admiral Thrawn.
While I didn't end up disliking the rise of Skywalker I am a bit disappointed they didn't take from dark empire for story's, as when I heard Palestine was coming back I got excited hoping they were gonna mimic dark empire! This was the first star wars comic I read, so it holds a special place to me.
A story where Palpatine comes back but in a meaningful way picking up on Plagueis, Bad Batch, and Mandalorian lore, completely removing Exogol from the equation would be amazing
Eternally confused by him being like "I CAME BACK, THERES CLONES" in 2 panels in this series was fine but everyone lost it in ROTS. Both were intensely lazy, but ROTS actually had the structure of referencing past media.
Dark Empire get away with it for 2 reasons. It did it first in 1991. It is some of the earliest establishing lore of the setting. It is part of the foundation.
Here's (almost) everything that was taken from Dark Empire and used in the new Disney Star Wars movies. List will not mention anything from Dark Empire 2 and 3. If you have any more then comment below! 1. Palpatine returning via cloning 2. Secret world of the Sith: Byss and Exogol 3. Force Projection 4. Invincible planet destroying weapons, ultimately destroyed by a droid: R2 and World Devestators, BB8 and Xyston-class Star Destroyers 5. Hyperspacing out of the planet's atmosphere (happened in Rogue One) 6. "Looks like half the galaxy's arrived Lando" Mirroring Lando bringing in half the galaxy in Episode IX 7. Maz Kanata is basically Vima Da Boda (Handing a lightsaber to the hero) 8. The Emperor's force possession 9. Tobias Beckett from Solo is basically Mako 10. The return of the Empire (though that was bound to happen in a sequel trilogy) 11. The New Republic loses their capitol: Courscant and Hosnian Prime 12. Instead of the Empire fleeing to the unknown regions, they flee to the galactic core 13. The Emperor is destroyed by the heroes redirecting his dark side power back towards him. 14. A Skywalker is seduced by The Emperor and is redeemed in the end 15. Having to go on a mini-adventure in order to access the Sith world 16. Lightsaber giving visions. 17. The Eclipse Star Destroyer (cheating a bit since it was only used in the cancelled Episode IX: Duel of the Fates)
handing a lightsaber to the hero doesn't make them the same character. if that's the case, ben kenobi is also vima. mako is also not like beckett at all. one is a smuggler, the other works for a crime syndicate as a thief. Mako lives and is from correlia and is only stated to be an old friend of han. Beckett is far more influential to han during his formative years, far less of a friend, and actively becomes his enemy toward the end of the movie. Mako does none of these and is nothing more than an empty side character. also the following numbers on your list 4, 14, 15 and 2 are not specific to dark empire and are mostly recycled ideas from the movies or are tropes that you can find in various star wars media. 12 and 6 are also not points of note, because even if they were not included in either stories, it would have changed nothing.

So kriffing awesome! That building is literally haunted. *actually not, they were two different buildings in the expanded universe

Think the reason this version of Palpatine being a clone works is because he was up against Luke. Luke and Vader’s greatest enemy coming back is a lot heavier than Rey fighting her supposed grandfather that we had no clue about. It just feels random and forced.
We need the Thrawn novels as the next third trilogy, with an X- Wing companion series that runs alongside. The fourth trilogy should be about the Yuuzhan Vong Wars, with some companion series alongside that as well. The fifth trilogy should be about Abeloth, with a series about the joiner crisis before that. I thought it would be cool to petition Elon Musk to buy the rights to Star Wars, and make this a reality. (Be aware the following was based on false info, but is a cool idea if you consider you never see the temple again after the force unleashed)
Another thing, the imperial palace is actually the repurposed jedi temple,* which also explains why the dark side is so strong there when Luke is exploring it, aside from the fact that the emperor used to be there. That building is literally haunted.
*actually not, they were two different buildings in the expanded universe
Imperial Palace and Jedi temple are two different buildings in the Legends timeline where this takes place. But I like your earlier explanation
@@DIEGhostfish Ah yeah your right I looked it up I thought that was the legends explanation that it was built over the jedi temple much later, which is why you never see it again after the force unleashed. But I guess not. Still it's a cool headcanon idea. Still hard to find the right Canon information sometimes now that Disney has screwed up the expanded universe
Yea imo there's enough open-ended in the timeline that a lot of old EU and disney canon can b reconciled for headcanon (at least across like 1 or 2 stories lmao), so the imperial palace being the old jedi temple could work FOR THIS STORY if u want that in ur headcanon.
But there could be another book where they go to both separately and it wouldn't work
Star wars is so fun
@@jeezed2950 Eh that would work, but NJO made it very clear the original Jedi Temple and Imperial palace are two different buildings in Enemy Lines and Traitor.
I made it an hour and 40 minutes without commenting. But Han Solo constantly audibly choking at that one part genuinely made me laugh.
Also appreciate this video. I was genuinely surprised it wasn’t robot audio too. I’m so used to it. Glad there was visuals to go with it too (even if I treat these sort of thing mostly as audiobooks).
The "Dark Empire" is the real true Sequel Trilogy.
This was awesome! Thanks for uploading it!!
This is amazing!!!! I am loving this
What do you think of the big hint of Heir to the empire line in the Ahsoka trailer
Great job! Glad you were using my remaster in this way :)
(1:52:00) MY LEG! The Emperor been saying it before spongbob
Curses! You beat me to it by a whole year.
So much better than the sequel trilogy
HUGE “thank you” to Mr. Poke! I stumbled upon this, & have been listening to the DE saga since May 4th (2024) after the Hot Toys Luke dropped! I just finished Empire’s End.
Really thrilled & thankful.
Notice how despite being Darkside, Luke maintains control over his power unlike his father. He is patient and does not kill anyone out of impulse like his father.
this is absolute peak legends. the use of episode II mysterious scores is mint
I had no idea this is where the devastators came from. I loved that mission in rogue squadron 😲
Never stop doing what you're doing, man.
Who knew Billy Dee was such an awesome voice actor
Excellent work, thank you very much! ❤
I wish Disney would have made the sequel trilogy like this or maybe an animated movie of this
Actually... they have. Wasn't the best decision
@@simonfeuerstein5720 Rey doesn't count. She's cringe af
Well the last movie ripped this story off very generously
@@Hatzi89 butchered would be more accurate they made a terrible copy of the original trilogy. You can tell the Dark Empire comics are a different story from the original trilogy.
What I remember so much about this amazing and awesome Star Wars Dark Empire II book is when Luke Skywalker is on the Dark Side and Leia Organa Solo was worried about him it started to remind that those moments were echoing Anakin Skywalker and Padmè Amidala in Revenge Of The Sith
this is awesome I never heard of this comic
Think the reason this version of Palpatine being a clone works is because he was up against Luke. Luke and Vader’s greatest enemy coming back is a lot heavier than Rey fighting her supposed grandfather that we had no clue about. It just feels random and forced.
hey look! REAL sequels! THIS is the sequels my kids will see.
my son and daughter: "whats a rey? you mean jaina??"
OMFG!!! YESSSSSS!!!
THANK YOU FOR THIS!!
We love how instead of just copying and pasting this Disney did this but worse and no context.
True Star Wars, I miss it.
Thank you so much for this just recently got into the eu this was amazing!
this comics has 32 years. I read it it 1998. It still has way more coherent and influential than an entire so-called new trilogy, on all levels
That's what Han Solo is supposed to sound like! Lol, good work!
Lando is legit Billy Dee Williams.
@@Young.Supernovas I think 3PO is Anthony Daniels too.
This video is the equivalent of walking into an air conditioned store on a 100 degree day. Legends is where true star wars is at, F the Disney Canon.
… It is like the actual actors are doing all the voice acting.. It’s amazingly perfect voices… Awesome stuff here.
Especially Lando, he sounds almost exactly the same as in the movies.
@@barnowl2655Billy actually reprised his voice but the others were recasts
Well done
Episode 8 we deserved... (Ep 7 is Heir of the Empire)
I’d say the stuff with the Solo kids or even Ben Skywalker should have been the sequel trilogy. Still Thrawn and Dark Empire are solid continuations.
It would be so awesome for Disney to concede failure, and for the relaunch to go off ten times better than their glorified head canon fanfiction.
@@GlomusIridescensi'd support this just more the memes and everyone loosing their minds. I don't think it'd make for good star wars, but it can't get much worse and at least the fanbase drama would be entertainment
@@thedirtbagstash Have you read all the novels that I mentioned? They really are better. What's good for star wars would be returning to being star wars, instead of a fever dream cooked up by people hooked on woke copium
What a trip. It's like old school radio styles . Kudos to all involved. Good job.
Full power Luke, not some whiny hermit beaten by a nobody. This is the Hero of my youth, the real Luke Skywalker.
The story's just okay and goes a little far in a few places but this comic really stands out due to Kam Kennedy's amazing art, he did all of it himself and it rivals the work of any master.
As a comic book "connoisseur" myself I hold this series in high regard, it's unbelievable and goes above and beyond what could just have been another simple tie in story for an existing franchise.
Also in this drama Han flirts with Leia in the weirdest most inappropriate moments
This shows you how much Disney messed up.
Amazing how something like this is so much better than the new trilogy. A perfect example of how money does not equal quality.
These really are top quality, I'm going to enjoy watching all these over the next few days, great picture and crisp sound thank you. Glad I found your channel subbed now, really brings back some good memories before the dark times lol
I love this simply because coruscant was, for the first time I’ve ever heard- pronounced “Corus-cant”
Anytime a Coruscanti is feeling ambitious their downer friend says “it’s caller coruscant not coruscan”
Oh that sinking feeling when you listen to a new Star Wars audiobook, looking forward to immersing yourself in the world, and suddenly the narrator talks about Choruskahnt or Corusscunt and you know this whole novel is gonna be a bit of a challenge.
I definitely want to see the battle of mon calamari in battlefront 2017 engine. The vfx, the sfx it would be iconic
This is brilliant absolutely brilliant and proves that Luke is truly the best and the most proficient Jedi.
I remember listening to this on cassette as a kid. This is the true episode 7
No the true episode 7 is heir to the empire
This story arc is the best!
54:03 "They told me marriage to a Jedi Princess wasn't going to be easy..." PMSL
Thanks for this-really enjoyed it. I used to have the collected edition many years ago but gave it away. Don’t remember why! Many good memories.
I had this comic it was really good.
Why are you so awesome with the uploads?!
This more like than other one I listened to, it was all audio dubbed. With the musical score it's even better.
For the sake of levity, I admit the opening crawl had me muttering "Jeeeeesus Christ" under my breath as it just kept going and going.
Excellent video. Thank you for sharing.
Idk why I’m just discovering this video, this is great! Well done!
this is what the sequel triology should have been!
This came up on my YT feed, watching the video and listening to the characters awesome
It’s so funny how serious the comics make the emotions of the characters compared to how they act in the shows and movies…like they have Han always super expressive (which he is an expressive guy) but they have him making such serious faces which he wouldn’t do
This is amazing
The real continuation of the original Trilogy… Thank you Jedi Grand Master. 😎💯
Thank you for this!
Palpatine titling his Diary "The Book of Anger" is cute
Palpatine surving endor in a clone body on a remote planet with fanatical followers while threatening the galaxy with giant superweapons with the ultimate goal of transferring his consciousness into a young body that can support his power?
Good thing disney didnt rip off the EU in any way
If you posted this 5 years before Rise of Skywalker, then this comment wouldn’t age long.
