My first cerulean was W&N Cerulean Blue(PB35) and after buying all the W&N Professional blues and most of the Daniel Smith Extra Fine/Primatek I decided to purchase the DS Cerulean Blue Chromium(PB36). I just bought it today so I'm excited to see how it differs from PB35 Cerulean. Great video, thank you!
@@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber Hahahahaha! I totally agree. I've picked up graphic designing on my own. Never attended any school. My mother was a Gold-medalist Fine Arts student from the most prestigious art school, JJ School of Arts, in India. She completed her 5-year course in 1965. Then, she started as an animation artist. I've learned a lot from her, and whenever, in my childhood (am 52 now), I would get frustrated for not getting the right colour by mixing two, she would always tell me that I was mixing the wrong shades. Your videos remind me of her a lot. I've just started painting after a break of almost 3 decades, and your videos are extremely helpful. On a different note, In case you can get hold of Kokuyo Camlin's Artists' watercolours, please do try them. In case someone is flying to the UK from India, I'll send them across. They are real professional-grade colours and are available at a fraction of the other non-Indian brands. They have a range of 48 colours. A 20 ml tube costs just Rs.70 to Rs.80, depending on the colour. Most of the professional artists in India have been using them for decades (Camlin was founded in 1931, and was taken over by Kokuyo a few years back), and they are still the favourites of many artists. Thank you so much for replying to my comment.
I am a rank beginner; I’ve only been painting for 2 months. Your color mixing videos have helped me understand color more than all the “color wheel” videos on RUclips. Thank you so much! I can’t wait to start swatching my own trials of your recipes.
I've hated my cerulean blue, so this was a game changer! Mine is very opaque and strong, ruining my skies every time, but adding the permanent rose is perfect, and I love the greens. Thanks, as always!
Wow! Just mixed cerulean with a yellow & various red/ pink shapes I have gorgeous results thanks to your tips, from green, lilacs & varying skin tones. Thanks
Michele, I have been power-watching your videos and learning SO much! I am absolutely loving this colour series and am really inspired. I’m actually in awe LOL I’m so thankful to have subscribed and grateful for everything you do ❤️
My goodness, I wish I could afford these wonderful, beautiful paints!! You are so good at expressing in depth to help us understand. You are my new favorite channel!!
Thank you for your teaching. I love how you explain. How to mix the colours and what you use them for. I have leaned a lot. Stay well. Stay safe a blessings 💐🐯
I love your videos. You’re very straightforward and easy to follow. I’d be interested in learning more about pigment combinations and how to read the labels. As you mentioned, different manufacturers use different P combinations in their formulas.
i have often thought that your skin tone was very beautiful. You don't appear to have any sun damage anywhere. Wish my skin was like that. I can't wait to discover the video about skintones.
I have Cerulean Blue Chromium from DS, and I like to use Quin. Burnt Orange also DS to make grey. It seems to be a slightly greenish but almost neutral grey.
I am quite new to watercolour, and have settled into using Van Gogh. Interestingly, the Cerulean Blue is not a single pigment. It contains white (PW6). Funny thing is that’s one of the colours that attracted me to the Van Gogh!
I use the Daniel Smith Cerulean Blue Chromium PB36 the most because it's a deeper and more versatile color on my palette. I like the Winsor & Newton Cerulean, it's a bit greener than the DS and Rembrandt and more granulating, but it's stunning. M Graham's Cerulean Blue is so finely milled that it has very little granulation and I use it when I want a flatter sky or blue in my painting, might be helpful for artists who don't like strong granulation. I love granulation, think makes a more dimensional sky and gives cloud shadows some depth, but it isn't for every situation. Adding Potter's Pink to cerulean blue (or deeper blues) can make for some great skies.
I haven't tried the Chromium, I love the Daniel Smith manganese blue. Never thought of adding potter's pink, the one I have is very opaque, thanks for the tip. The majority of my paints are Talents because that's what I started with, but have since added some Winsor & Newton and a couple of other brands. So many colours, so little time! ☺️
This was great! Thank you for this and all your videos, which are a huge help to beginners, especially those who are still stuck in isolation. I do not have any of the brands you mentioned, only Winsor Newton, but I am going to try these mixtures and see what I can get. Having learned how to do a mixture chart, I will do that with these also. Again, thank you.
Thank you for this video. I never use cerulean blue because of its opacity and I have trouble getting a flat wash with it. I’ve always loved the color and never used it in mixes. I’ve missed the boat I think.
It's a beautiful colour, but expensive and not the best for flat washes due to granulation. You can reduce this by mixing with something like Phthalo blue. It comes into it's own when mixing delicate greens and lilacs.
I have the Cerulean Blue Hue. Just ordered Cerulean Blue (DS). What is the difference when it says hue? I am a beginner! Started watercolour via RUclips to have something to do during Covid. (I am 68). Thank you.
The word Hue (means color) usually means that the color is not genuine, ie it's a color that looks like Cerulean, not Cerulean itself. It's likely to be Phthalo blue if you look on the reverse you can see the pigment numbers and google it. Colors are sometimes replaced for cost reasons but not always, they may be replaced due to scarcity, toxicity etc so it's not always a bad thing.
Brilliant video! Unlike you with your natural color talent, I have to work at seeing colors and learning to mix them, so your videos are spot on for me. You are helping me pick apart colors and learning the names of them. I appreciate the extra tips (always) like stirring b/c of granular pigments and learning what is a "staining" color and how to use it sparingly. (Clearly I'm a novice!) You are terrific. thanks so much. All the best.
Excellent video!! 👌 Very useful and i think these kind of videos showing the subtleties of how to make good use of a given pigment for especific and useful applications via mixing with this or that pigments and the aprox ratios are the best. Do you often use Cobalt blue or you find it unnecessary having Ultramarine and cerulean in the palette ? Cheers.
Hi, so glad you liked the video, I am planning to do more on other colours. I do have Cobalt, I have a lot of blues. It's quite close to ultramarine, but if you have a purple tending ultramarine then I think Cobalt is still useful. To me it sits right in the middle of the blues, it's especially good for real blue-green leaves like tulip leaves. And you get a fresher green as there is no red (which you get in ultramarine) to dull the green :-)
@@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber Thanks a lot for the answer! Yes cobalt is as middle of a blue as possible i think, i'm struggling a little trying to narrow the list of blues to experiment with and to buy but i kinda like and want them all! For some reason i don't care that much about yellows and reds or other colors. Anyhow! cheers.
I dont keep a proper cerulean on my palette because I prefer cerulean chromium, but I pull it out for mixing grays on mammals, especially if I'm painting storybook-style.
I’m working my way systematically through your videos and getting great value from all of them. I’m enjoying the colour mixing videos as choosing paints and colour mixing is a bit daunting for me as a beginner. This one is, as always very clear and uncomplicated. I was wondering how to get the strong, clear skies we get here in Western Australia in the summer and it looks like phthalo blue and cerulean may be just the right colours to mix.
I wanted to give thumbs up but my thumb icon button isn't lighten up to blue have you had any other students comment on postive thumbs up icon? Tried to trouble shoot problem noticed others are having issue also I really liked this video I'm learning alot about color variations...mikelle newyork mom😷🎨
Cerulean blue cannot be mixed as it's a single pigment and a primary. You could approximate with very watered down phthalo and a touch of ultramarine or cobalt but it would be poor in comparison. Manganese blue is the closest if you are buying and cerulean is out of stock.
caerulean is one of those staple colors that i actually never bought, but now i'm not sure why. i love granulation and i love blue, so i guess i have no choice. but to buy more paint. oh no. what a nightmare.
Hue means colour. Cerulean blue is a single pigment colour usually either PB35 or PB36 depending on brand. Any good brand will list the pigment on the tube or their website. If a colour is called Cerulean Blue 'Hue' it *might* mean that it's a cheaper mix of pigments, mimicking the more expensive pure cerulean pigments. But you would need to investigate further to be sure.
Do you like this colour, and have you tried any of these colour mixes before?
