My own personal take on the siren or mermaid thing is the intent in their songs. Mermaids are creatures of the ocean that would like to live in peace in their home. Mermaids sing to frighten sailors, so they'll sail as far as away as possible believing them to be Sirens. Sirens are both of the sea and not. They spend their time near jagged rocks and hard to navigate waters, so that when they sing to lure sailors out to them, the sailors crash sinking to the bottom of the sea. Sirens want sailors to never leave the sea while Mermaids want them to leave forever. This is why they've evolved to look the same (like animals that camouflage as deadly animals). Both entities do not care where sailors truly end up as long as their boats are off the ocean top causing pollution and the like. I see them as two sides of the same coin both fighting to protect their home (the ocean) from invaders (sailors), but employing very different means to achieve this result. It's really just a theory/headcanon that we can use to distinguish the two. BTW you have a beautiful voice, and I remember hearing this a while ago and had to look it up so I could hear it again.
Traditionally, sirens look nothing like mermaids. They are more similar to harpies. They have the face of pretty women with the bodies of birds of prey. Though, by the time youve gotten close enough to determine that they are monsters, it's too late.

I read somewhere on tv said sirens also prey on sailors becuz they’ve been on the sea for too long and yearning for female companionship. Like the second comment said, they have a pretty face of a woman so its easy to get their victims.

At midnight, the ship rests calmly on the ocean's surface, moving along with the soft waves and its young captain is taking some fresh air after a long day trip. He's exhausted but for some reason, he could not fell asleep and now is just looking at the dark and endless horizon. But suddenly, like brought by the wind, a soft melody catches his attention, it sounds beautiful, louder and clearer as time passes by, it is now a call, a strong need invades him, he wants to feel the water's touch, be embraced by the rhythm of the sea. A last moment of awareness didn't avoid the sweet voice to pushing the man to take the first lifeboat he saw. No one heard the splash. In a blink of an eye he's almost submerged, captivated by two beautiful eyes and warm arms around him, feeling the fresh breeze. He wanted nothing more in life, he could stay forever that way. The soothing voice remained there for him, for a moment he felt loved, like he could reach the stars...... Wich he couldn't see anymore. He could not see the stars, not the moon, there was not air to feel or...to breath. Mermaids and Sirens are different. Sirens are half bird and half woman who would do the singing to lure sailor’s into the sea for them to go after the sirens to their shipwreck part of the siren’s island. So as you can tell, Siren’s use their singing for mischief and evil. On the other half, Mermaids are half beautiful human and half fish. Yes, they do sing with their absolute amazing voice, but they use for good not evil. These creatures were “made up” by the Greek-Mythology. In my own opinion I do believe Siren’s sure they’re beautiful but they are meant for evil and no good. But Mermaids are good and always meant for good and no harm at all. I like your reasoning, but I think the sirens you're describing are just the greek version. There are a lot of other versions, even sirens with human bodies. And there are other versions where mermaids are half human half fish and are extremely beautiful, but they don't have enchanted voices. Just pointing it out, although it's nice to see someone who knows that.
Yes, there are many different stories about mermaids and sirens. Sirens being known as the ones to lure sailors with their beautiful singing in order to cause shipwreck. However, there are some stories where mermaids are known as being evil as well. I believe there are some stories where the mermaids lure men to go underwater with them with their beautiful singing, but because humans cannot be underwater for a long period of time they end up drowning.
An example of that could be the Merrow, a lot like merrows. Although they weren't intentionally malicious they can be quite careless. They prefer human men because the male merrows are hideous, so they drag them down in hopes to make them their husbands. Drowning them.

The swaying tides, the gentle breeze, the fisherman hummed in this peaceful like horizon reading the book called “the sirens” the world felt still, but little did he know, it was just a sign, a nirvana before he takes a last breath into the unknown, the death. He felt the aura turned cold, and dead looked at the ocean and saw a hand looking for survival thinking such a scene would be horror, he chuckled and said quietly.. “Silly me i must be that old to hallucinate.” But it definitely felt real, he was in a dream like haven, turning into a nightmare, a life and death situation, he then closed his eyes and stared at his old skin with calluses, then a nice vocal divine voice was tuning from the horizon, he heard the peaceful sound thinking it must be another effect of this divinity, he took of his jacket and shoes and swam in the water, deeper and deeper, from the rocky edge of the land, into the sand, into where the sea weed touched your foot soles, where the fish gently trickled the water around his legs and arms, he went far, away. The music went into pure holiness, a goddesses voice exactly, put then, the tides grew, the water turned dark, the peaceful sun turned void and empty, the clouds melted and dispersed the sea floor suddenly sank, the same hand he so called hallucinated appeared, with blood, scars and hate the song grew loud yet melodious, he felt his eyes heavy, he knew it was a siren his father told him when he was young, and coincidentally it was the same place the siren of horror attacked.. “Eahhhhh!” Screams flooded his mind, all the victims, imprinted directly even if he didn’t know then, his vision faded, he tried to cling onto the water, hoping to survive, put there was no hope, the tiny light that cracked through the water was too weak... he was a strong person he knew he could survive, he was so strong he has many calluses until this old age of “98” he then though before he died slowly... “I lived a lucky life, a long life with many blessings, i will succumb, i will be thankful..” The siren disappeared after he stopped breathing, after he lost all will.. the man gasped to see another humans skull in the ocean floor quickly covered by sand before.. he stepped into deaths arms.

My own personal take on the siren or mermaid thing is the intent in their songs. Mermaids are creatures of the ocean that would like to live in peace in their home. Mermaids sing to frighten sailors, so they'll sail as far as away as possible believing them to be Sirens. Sirens are both of the sea and not. They spend their time near jagged rocks and hard to navigate waters, so that when they sing to lure sailors out to them, the sailors crash sinking to the bottom of the sea. Sirens want sailors to never leave the sea while Mermaids want them to leave forever. This is why they've evolved to look the same (like animals that camouflage as deadly animals). Both entities do not care where sailors truly end up as long as their boats are off the ocean top causing pollution and the like. I see them as two sides of the same coin both fighting to protect their home (the ocean) from invaders (sailors), but employing very different means to achieve this result.
It's really just a theory/headcanon that we can use to distinguish the two. BTW you have a beautiful voice, and I remember hearing this a while ago and had to look it up so I could hear it again.

The Sirens is the Greek myths, are nature spirits cursed by Demeter for not intervening when Persephone was captured. I can never find a for sure answer one which spirits they are. They were either Nymphs, Naiads, Nereids, or Oceanids. And they aren’t pretty mermaids like they are portrayed in modern culture either. They were pictured like this:
“Sirens were believed to combine women and birds in various ways. In early Greek art, Sirens were represented as birds with large women's heads, bird feathers and scaly feet. Later, they were represented as female figures with the legs of birds, with or without wings, playing a variety of musical instruments, especially harps and lyres. At midnight, the ship rests calmly on the ocean's surface, moving along with the soft waves and its young captain is taking some fresh air after a long day trip. He's exhausted but for some reason, he could not fell asleep and now is just looking at the dark and endless horizon. But suddenly, like brought by the wind, a soft melody catches his attention, it sounds beautiful, louder and clearer as time passes by, it is now a call, a strong need invades him, he wants to feel the water's touch, be embraced by the rhythm of the sea. A last moment of awareness didn't avoid the sweet voice to pushing the man to take the first lifeboat he saw. No one heard the splash.
In a blink of an eye he's almost submerged, captivated by two beautiful eyes and warm arms around him, feeling the fresh breeze. He wanted nothing more in life, he could stay forever that way. The soothing voice remained there for him, for a moment he felt loved, like he could reach the stars......
Wich he couldn't see anymore.
He could not see the stars, not the moon, there was not air to feel or...to breath.
Water, that's all he could feel around him, the warm hands holding him were now cold as ice and the fingers sharp as knives, the fading light allowed him to see the same beautiful eyes, but there was also a dark, tetrical smile.
The terror invaded the captain as he struggled against a great force that he could not understand, he was all alone but he tried to shout as loud as he could, just some bubbles were heard by the creature, that was delighted by his desperated fight, making it faster.
Thoughts of regret haunted him as water filled his lungs, along with a last weak attempt to reach the shadow from the floting ship.
There was a little light at the ocean bed, but by then, the young man would never see or feel anything again, she was sure of it, she knew it because six hours ago, she was already on surface, watching the errant ship, the crew looking nervously everywhere for something or SOMEONE, without sucess.
Poor things, she knew it was all in vain, but they would not have to worry anymore for it, for nothing more, not after the next nights, she was a clever, enchanting siren...

Actually, that's just one of the many versions of sirens. The ancient greek version was half bird half woman and their version is probably the first and oldest, but other people believe in the half fish legend.

Mermaids and Sirens are different. Sirens are half bird and half woman who would do the singing to lure sailor’s into the sea for them to go after the sirens to their shipwreck part of the siren’s island. So as you can tell, Siren’s use their singing for mischief and evil. On the other half, Mermaids are half beautiful human and half fish. Yes, they do sing with their absolute amazing voice, but they use for good not evil. These creatures were “made up” by the Greek-Mythology. In my own opinion I do believe Siren’s sure they’re beautiful but they are meant for evil and no good. But Mermaids are good and always meant for good and no harm at all. I like your reasoning, but I think the sirens you're describing are just the greek version. There are a lot of other versions, even sirens with human bodies. And there are other versions where mermaids are half human half fish and are extremely beautiful, but they don't have enchanted voices. Just pointing it out, although it's nice to see someone who knows that.
Yes, there are many different stories about mermaids and sirens. Sirens being known as the ones to lure sailors with their beautiful singing in order to cause shipwreck. However, there are some stories where mermaids are known as being evil as well. I believe there are some stories where the mermaids lure men to go underwater with them with their beautiful singing, but because humans cannot be underwater for a long period of time they end up drowning.
An example of that could be the Merrow, a lot like merrows. Although they weren't intentionally malicious they can be quite careless. They prefer human men because the male merrows are hideous, so they drag them down in hopes to make them their husbands. Drowning them.
mermaids arent actually made up.. they were just drawings arabs drew to pass time, as in instead if seals they'd draw half men with seals on their lower half, and greeks alongside them, u can read about it..

The swaying tides, the gentle breeze, the fisherman hummed in this peaceful like horizon reading the book called “the sirens” the world felt still, but little did he know, it was just a sign, a nirvana before he takes a last breath into the unknown, the death. He took his old fishing pole, and sat down onto the wooden chairs of his boat, he took a cold breath without realizing. He felt the aura turned cold, and dead looked at the ocean and saw a hand looking for survival thinking such a scene would be horror, he chuckled and said quietly.. “Silly me i must be that old to hallucinate.” But it definitely felt real, he was in a dream like haven, turning into a nightmare, a life and death situation, he then closed his eyes and stared at his old skin with calluses, then a nice vocal divine voice was tuning from the horizon, he heard the peaceful sound thinking it must be another effect of this divinity, he took of his jacket and shoes and swam in the water, deeper and deeper, from the rocky edge of the land, into the sand, into where the sea weed touched your foot soles, where the fish gently trickled the water around his legs and arms, he went far, away. The music went into pure holiness, a goddesses voice exactly, put then, the tides grew, the water turned dark, the peaceful sun turned void and empty, the clouds melted and dispersed the sea floor suddenly sank, the same hand he so called hallucinated appeared, with blood, scars and hate the song grew loud yet melodious, he felt his eyes heavy, he knew it was a siren his father told him when he was young, and coincidentally it was the same place the siren of horror attacked.. “Eahhhhh!” Screams flooded his mind, all the victims, imprinted directly even if he didn’t know then, his vision faded, he tried to cling onto the water, hoping to survive, put there was no hope, the tiny light that cracked through the water was too weak... he was a strong person he knew he could survive, he was so strong he has many calluses until this old age of “98” he then though before he died slowly... “I lived a lucky life, a long life with many blessings, i will succumb, i will be thankful..” The siren disappeared after he stopped breathing, after he lost all will.. the man gasped to see another humans skull in the ocean floor quickly covered by sand before.. he stepped into deaths arms.
