Sorry this one took a bit longer than usual to make, just got back to college and whatnot lol.
Hope you enjoyed this series!
PS: All music used in this video comes from the Pokemon anime and can be found here! ruclips.net/video/NCD5f-fetpA/видео.html
Here's to hoping SwSh will be better, even with the Pokédex cuts!
Gen 5 amazing game but had a bad anime series, gen 6 underwhelming game but a great anime series, and gen 7 good game but it is at best a one time experience, and not bad but not outstanding anime series.
Generation 5 this generation I always have the most fond memories about and when it the next series of the anime with all the generations I wanted gen 5 to be improved the most.
@@joshhallam7705 bit it had the most booring manga (at least out of all the gens before it i havent read past b&w)
Ivan Hammell I never read the manga sorry man the games is one I had most fond memories.
Very worth mentioning, the removal of HM’s being replaced with the Pokemon Pager was a MASSIVE quality of life improvement.
Definitely.

And yet, most pokemon fans want a remake of D&P with EIGHT HMs!! 🙄
No thank you.
@@rantradio hahaha there is really some people that want HMs back lmao
I feel like gen 7 is going to be like gen 5 where people are going to realize it was lit
Yep and I even see it myself rn considering Gen 8 pretty much has the same flaws as X/Y
Gen 7&8 are the new Gen 5 to 6 era all over again lmao.
And like Gen 5, vanilla Sun & Moon has strong story and characterization like Black & White 1, while Ultra has more gameplay improvements but a worse story like Black & White 2.
You might be right to some extent, but the hand holding makes it very hard to enjoy replaying. Also, the masterpiece tier 2D in gen 5 will age infinitely better than the crappy gen 7 3D.
@Hatchumosc1 couldn't agree more , the huge reason why gen 7 won't be age like gen 5, is gen 5 tried really hard and was very rich with content and lore outside of the story. You can hate the story and still love gen 5 where gen 7 if you hate lille you might as well turn off your 3ds
Hau is clearly the main character of sun and moon, you’re the poorly written but strong rival
Not just strong but an OP rival
Wasn't Lillie the main character though?
That's actually how I felt with Barry. Except I really liked Barry. He was a nice guy - but he did put up a fight!
That explains why you have the starter with the type advantage
@Pokémon & FF fan No, you're still the main character. You save the world, stop the villains, catch the legendary and because champion.
Gen 7 Trainer: (Smiles)
Me: The F**k is wrong with you??
I laughed when Nihilego first appeared and Hau got shocked seeing an alien yet the character just smiles :)
@@laudydorado5245 Then with Lillie being triggered over her mother and you're there like "wow this is great here, 10/10 would sleep there"
Jex 16 I don’t get that criticism, this never bothered people in previous games.
@@abarette_ I swear I’ve seen you in Distant Kingdom’s videos
@@vikavoltisepic3507 makes sense
"Before we talk about the story, let's discuss what Gen 7 had to offer us. Ok, now onto the story!"
Dang it you got me. He never said it that way.
Nothing basically
Lol
Other than the core games and Let's Go... There really isn't any other noticeable thing in Gen 7
Lmao
My issue with Sun/Moon and to a lesser extent XY was that they treated all players like they had never played a rpg game before, let alone a Pokemon game. Barring brand new mechanics, I think most people who have played at least since the jump to DS would have a solid understanding of the basics without the refresher every new generation.
They should learn how to make skippable diolauge like how almost everysingle game has a way to do(honestly cant think of anything that doesnt). It not a complete problem fixer but it sure would help sleed up the game. Im guessing it was to hard for them to program
They think we're dumb
They do that because although a large part of their demographic IS returning fans, its also a game they intentionally want marketed to kids more than adults so they always approach the game as if maybe its the first game the player has ever played, because they want kids playing for the first time to be able to understand.
As someone who started on Pokemon Blue back in the 90's, I can attest to still not knowing how to use a pokecenter or throw a pokeball.
I could never work out how to get past the guy blocking the road in Vermilion City just after I got my Pokemon and leaving Pallet town
"In this game, you're not even the main character, Lillie is."
That is actually Sun and Moon's biggest strength, IMO. The fact that SM (the original, not USUM) is the story of Lillie and her family, and how Lillie grows as a person, is my favourite aspect of this game. Our MC hardly ever feels organically included in a Pokemon game anyway - with BW being the notable exception - so I can't say that using the narrative to focus on someone else is a bad decision. In fact, it's a bloody brilliant one. It's why I dislike USUM so much; they take most of the spotlight off of Lillie, put it back on us, change Lusamine entirely, making her more noble and thus making Lillie and Gladion come off less as abused children and more as ungrateful brats. Nah, SM was fuckin' great for making Lillie the MC.
that arguement can be made for the majority of games imo. like gen 8 felt like leon was the main character. gen 6 imo felt like lysandre was the main character because he is the only interesting character. gen 5 felt like n was the main character etc
Agreed. I love Sun & Moon because it was a refreshing change of pace in terms of story from previous generations. I wasn't destined to thwart some evil that could destroy the world, I was helping a friend grow as a person.
@@GreenDinoRanger Yep! It's why I believe SM has the best story in Pokemon
@@Djirifoekrkfkf The difference is the point of focus. Gen VII is the only one where the focus and story drive is 100% on someone else entirely; we are still a protagonist, just a supporting protagonist. Lillie is the main focal character. And there's no other Pokemon game that does that, which is why USUM is such a jarring shift.
I actually prefer when yhe games don't focus on the player because the player is a boring character, they're just you and have no personality outside of what your own is in most of the games.
That being said I actually think the SM protagonist, as controversial as they are, has my favourite protagonist moment in the entire series.
When Lillie gives Nebby to them, they reach out their hand as if to say "no you should keep them."
It's really subtle, really great characterization and is overall just a very nice little moment
Game Freak: Let's Go is a back to basics gen 1 remake with old learnsets and no abilities
also Game Freak: BUT YOU CAN STILL MEGA EVOLVE
I like Mega Evo. I'm glad it was added to both Sun & Moon and Let's Go.
I was genuinely surprised during my first play through when Megas get introduced in the late game. Wasn’t necessarily a complaint but just surprising
personally, i think sun and moon has my favorite story of every generation. playing sun back in 2016 really gave me a real connection to lillie and gladion and i felt like lusamine was horrifying as a villian. maybe it was just my 10 year old imagination making the experience better for me but i just really honestly enjoyed these games.
Gen 7’s biggest con: No Mystery Dungeon game
There was Super Pokemon Mystery Dungeon on 3ds though that was Gen 6
YOU RIGHT
Finally in gen 8 there’s a mystery dungeon
Um what now? 😂
Boy do i have news for ya!
Gen 5 is always going to be my personal favourite generations, I do give credit for gen 7 for trying but in the end it was a one time experience compared to gen 5.
I agree 100% i loved black and white(maybe more than bw2) because you had a huge variety of new pokemon to learn to use without using older gen pokemon that your comfortable with and thats what i loved about ruby/saphire too
Gen 5 is my favorite Gen specifically BECAUSE they threw out all the old pokemon and gave us entirely new ones. It felt really refreshing, and the story was also interesting, you technically don't even fight the champion when you beat the story. Plus they gave a lot of love and attention to some types that had been really underrepresented in previous games. Like Bug and Dragon.
Josh Hallam I love the both of them, though.
@Dragon Kirby not at all
If only Gen 5 didn’t have trash starters
Thank you for pointing out the island trial thing. Ive always thought that the change it brought was overblown. They even managed to stuff in an elite four battle. They had the perfect excuse to do something like a tournment like in the anime but they made the league bassically the same experience and acting like the formula changed much at all seems kinda silly to me
... Seriously?
@@wikiuser92 yes
@@ivanbackfromthecardshop8093 What's wrong with an Elite Four? I thought Alola was a perfect mix of old and new.
@@wikiuser92 the point is that everyone likes to treat it like it really changed the formula but it took the chance to be as close as possible to the old system when it has the perfect reasoning to change it up (the fact that its newly formed)
@@ivanbackfromthecardshop8093 ...I fail to see it not changing. Gyms and trials are *nothing* alike.
Gen 7 not including let’s go E/P, was actually challenging especially the totem Pokémon and Ultra Necrozma. That’s what I really like about S/M,US/UM
sm wasn't challenging at all. Slightly more difficult than X/Y. USUM on the other hand...... (especially if you disable exp share)
iPermanently Same
It was only "challenging" because it was a ludicrous and unwarranted spike in difficulty. Now, if you're into that, that's fine. I would've preferred the average battles be more difficult period instead of just OHKO after OHKO until suddenly I have to fight a dragon danced opponent that didn't have to waste a turn.
Use toxic on any of them then stall with protect/revive and pots and it's GG
muntu1221 wrong honestly it wasn't just ultra necrozma that was hard.
Compared to before trainers got smarter
I skipped the original gen 7 games and instead got Ultra Sun. I found it really enjoyable. Currently replaying it since I got bored to death with my Shield version.
I think it is indeed the best way to enjoy gen 7, even if Lusamine was better written in OG Sun and Moon.
If only USUM would've been sequels rather than an enhanced version.
@@jjc4924 yeah
I'd recommend playing the originals for a better story but that's it
Pokemon Sun and Moon is easily on my Top 3 favorite Pokémon Generations, loved the story, loved the Region and vibe and loved the Trials, I definitely prefer this game over X and Y which was very empty and boring for the most part.
Same!
The Fennekin Fox Same, it’s maybe my third favourite gen behind gen 3 and 5.
I agree. It's probably my 4th or 3rd favorite gen, next to Gen. 2, 4 & 5. Can't decide if I liked it more or less than Gen. 2.
Wow it’s my favourite and probably the 3rd most hated behind kalos and galar but I had so much fun and if you make tropical games I’m bound to love it
Super minor, but parts of the Sun and Moon soundtrack now feel nostalgic when I look back on them. The first area in particular. That said, Gladion's theme is probably one of the absolute BEST tracks across all of the games, and this coming from someone whose favourite games were Black and White.
Personally, I really enjoyed these games. I liked the story, and I was annoyed by the trials at first, but I grew onto the idea. I also liked the region itself quite a lot. However nothing will beat black and whites game in my opinion
I can't wait for the day Unova gets remade. It's gonna be so sick and seeing that Plasma Logo take effect in HD is gonna be insane and incredibly Nostalgic.
@@SirDibble25 L
@@SirDibble25 gen 7 is now but gen5 was truly the black sheep of the franchise for 6 years
Possibly my favourite region, environment wise! Feels like home. I love all the side stories, returning characters and light hearted humour too
"Gen 7: At least it's not gen 6!"
Gen 6 > Gen 7
Despite Gen 6's flaws, I still prefer it over 7.
X3. With all it's flaws, I still prefer XY over Gen VII.
Gen 6 was one of the most fun Gens ever made. It definitely has some flaws (desert, team flare, easy legendary catch rate, etc) but X/Y & OR/AS were the best pokemon games I‘ve played for years (as a new experience)
All generations are fantastic don’t @
Although the game itself can get tiresome, I still love Sun and Moon's story, and the anime. There are many little details that make the world so much realer, and the story is something that children might need, in a time as tumultuous as this- dark but at the same time full of warmth that can fill you with determination.
I'm disappointed in LGPE.
Exactly! I fell in love with the alola region and it’s my second favorite games besides heart gold and soul silver. I love the world building, the anime, and the story. It’s not without it’s faults but it’s so much better imo than xy, LGPE, and SWSH. It doesn’t get enough credit
Yeah. I enjoyed Sun & Moon. It's in my top 5. Along with Gen. 2, Gen. 1 remake, Gen. 4 ( Platinum more accurately ) & Gen. 5 ( both Black & White 1 and 2 ).
Gen 7 will go down like gen 5 as an underrated generation
Unpopular opinion: I really liked gen 7 (SM/USUM)
its sad that it is a unpopular opinion i don't get why people hate it so much
Yea
I'll admit it wasn't perfect, had some pacing issues here and there
And Ultra Sun and Moon should have been one game with a expanded storyline or a Sequel instead of what we got
But theres a lot this gen did right, and i honestly love how it feels to play the games
I feel more bonded with my team honestly in this gen
I like sun and moon too
The generations that spoke to me the most were from Hoenn and its remakes, and all of Alola. I prefer to look at the split of SM/USUM as alternate timelines as I’m pretty sure that’s explicitly the intent behind them. Coming off Delta Emerald and then experiencing a “normal” Alolan timeline followed by one that was contacted by the Ultra Recon Squad and invaded by Rainbow Rocket, a team of bad guys who literally came from alternate timelines where they achieved their goals, just made for an awesome sort of trilogy of games.
And they all happened to have very comfy and delightful tropical settings.
Just sayin, team skull was the best part of SM and USUM
Totally.
IT'S YA BOI GUZMA
You see this bus stop? It's ours now.
2nd best to gladion smiling
Pokemon fans: I want my pokemon games to evolve into a modern triple a experience.
Also pokemon fans: grrrr I really hate cutscenes that try to give depth to characters why can't we just have sprites do the same animation over and over and just have text on the screen.
I think it’s more of “cutscene walk three steps cutscene walk five more steps cutscene”
I know, right?!
I think it’s also more that u can’t skip them like it’s cool the first time but man is SM hard to play through again
At least the story in Gen. 7 was good, though.
There are ways to make a AAA game besides making more story. (For one they could make it a _good_ story.) There's also upgrading graphics, which they kind of did with the new lighting style and more detailed character models, as well as the Switch having a higher resolution than the 3DS, but they're still using the exact same Pokemon models and animations (besides the new ones, of course). Another way would be making the play experience better. They took a few steps forward in that regard with the DLCs adding some postgame content, but you have to pay extra to access that and the main story is still laughably easy for the most part. There's a ton of ways to improve the difficulty and overall engagement people could have with the games.
Nobody:
JPR: *"Alolan Professor Oak!"*
what, would you rather he call him Professor Black Oak?
Why nobody? Everybody I know calls him like that
Sun and Moon I loved the hell out of, the best characters overall. The story of Lillie's family, Team Skull's subversion of the evil team and Guzma and Plumeria's characters in general. Trials basically are gym puzzles with a suped up wild battle at the end but the concept itself is great for expanding the Pokémon world and showing a region with a different system in the main series finally, and also seeing how a proper league is formed firsthand. I also love the callback to gen 5 with Professor Burnette, NEVER would have expected dream radar to be acknowledged again, let alone have her be a fairly prominent character. And the ultra beasts/wormhole phenomenon is great, I got and started Ultra Moon when it came out but haven't been able to finish it cause life, but the idea of ultra space and seeing these beasts in their habitat sounds amazing. Sucks about the story changes to Lusamine though, but the rest of the game should suffice
People overhate gen 7 imo. SM was still fun to play though had it not been for them USUM would've been held as one of the best imo
When gen 9 comes out, we'll probably be kinder to these games in retrospect
Overhate? I thought most fans like gen 7...
I agree
I hate it because its the 2nd gen in a row of unneeded kanto pandering, all while gens 2-6 get no regional variants.
@@RAVAGE656 Yeah,I'm happy more pokemon in SWSH get new forms
Honestly this is the best game for me, i might be biased cuz these games where the first I played. But they where just so good. I don’t see people giving this gen the appreciation it deserves
Gen 7 is kind of a mixed bag for me. SM was great story-wise despite its really slow tutorial. USUM, while unnecessary, was actually somewhat difficult and had a nuzlocke killer, despite lacking what the other 3rd versions had. And I didn't mind Let's Go's concept of taking some of Pokémon Go's mechanics and putting them into a game. (Although I wish it took place in an entirely original region.)
I liked the new ideas it had such as Pokéride for HM replacement and regional variants of old Pokémon. I also really liked most of the new Pokémon, especially the Ultra Beasts. Even some of the new characters were cool like Guzma, Gladion, Lusamine, and even Hau. Z-Moves were kinda cool and they allow any Pokémon to use them, unlike what Megas did.
However, the "Gen 1 Pandering" was at its all time high here. All of the Alola forms were just of Gen 1 Pokémon only. It was also really slow with its tutorials, making it hard to replay. USUM didn't have much to offer in terms of "new stuff". And Let's Go was another Gen 1 remake, which sparked so much hate in the fandom because of how tired they were of it.
It's not my favorite Generation, but it's a step up from 6's failures. Also they removed the National Dex in SM.
Mathew Ricafrente gen 4 and 5 was the peak in my opinion they are the best two generations,it not like I say the 3D entire are bad but the quality did go downhill gen 6 was underwhelming and gen 7 just have that one major weakness it pacing make it at best one time experience.
"somewhat difficult" - with Exp Share on it was still horribly easy except for the couple totem fights. without any grinding I again ended up 10+ levels above everything = bad game design like in Gen 6.
They only really removed the dex entries for SM which I didn't really care for. You could still collect and transfer them all though
@@joegreen3802 Yes, that's what I was saying in terms of a "National Dex."
@@joshhallam7705 I never was a fan of Gen 5 to be honest. I personally feel that the quality went downhill after Heart Gold and Soul Silver.
I have had Ultra Sun since it came out, and I have never been able to get into it. I have instead been playing through Platinum again and loving that.
Pemze your not missing much don’t bother finishing it just play sword and shield when they come out
I put 2 hours Into Ultra sun. Got tired of it since I was already burned out from SM. Went back to play Emerald. Have since replayed gens 1 through 4 and have not regretted it.
MrSupersonic2012 I played ruby after sun and then played crystal and yellow then ruby again and gold again 😂 sun I played once and never will play again
@@thebandanapirates8591 With Sun I was definitely one and done. I enjoyed the story on my first playthrough. But trying to go through Ultra Sun I was like "F*** I gotta go through this bs again?" I've never had that response to any of the older Pokemon games. In fact I've been getting my Pokemon fix by playing some quality rom hacks. They've been more enjoyable than the newer games.
@@MrSupersonic2012 Same here
Whilst each pokemon generation has its own charm, gen 5 remains my favourite by far!
👍👍💪💪
I liked the totem bosses. The dynamics changed immensely when it was a team of two pokemon that strategized and worked together, and it made for some actually cool and unique boss battles that were actually fun to overcome. SM lurantis, Marowak, mimikyu and Salazzle were bonkers and I freaking loved it.
I actually thought that ultra sun/moon were worse than their regular counterparts. Like you said, the story was weaker, but I also hated how it HAD to grind everything to a halt and tell you about every single new feature they added. No, I don't want to mantine surf to the next island. I also personally had an easier time with ultra except for the ultra necrozma fight, which had a pretty high difficulty spike (at least for my hail based team)
you only HAD to do mantine surf like once. all the stuff ultra added didn't feel like it was just grinding you to a halt
Gen 7 issues:
- Postgame was dry as hell.
- Ultra Beast failure: They were hyped up the entire game, until you actually just basically get handed a Master Ball to catch not 1, but 2 or 3 of them and then they are thrown to the side.
- Aloan forms: Why is there such random choices for new forms?
- No new Megas
- Totem Pokémon missed opportunity: Could have had more Totem Pokémon throughout the region that randomly spawn, like Shiny Pokemon
- Your rival, is not a rival. He is probably the easiest rival you have the entire series.
- Hints at Kanto Region, with even a boat that leads you there and Oak’s cousin present, yet you do not even go there to Kanto. That could have been the postgame experience. But nah, why we add another region to a game literally 10x bigger (in data) than Pokémon Crystal?
I think gen 6 had the weakest rivals
Gen VII to me suffered what I call "The Skyward Sword effect", at first its great and then as time goes on you realise it isn't as good as you thought it was. Also I REALLY HATE the holding of the Alola, too much stop-go-stop-go (especially in the Ultra games). Also the motion controls in Let's Go suck
That makes no sense as Skyward Sword is a prime example of a Zelda game.
Hated on at launch only to gain a following as time passes on like Wind Waker and Majora's Mask. Which BTW is a complete opposite effect of what you are proposing.
Is it better than Gen. 6, though?
No Gen 6 is better than Gen 7.
Jamie. I'll give it an try anyway. Because honestly, I didn't like X & Y at all. Even if it has problems, Gen. 7 looks & plays better than Gen. 6. So I'm gonna give it an shot.
Also, the biggest problem with Skyward Sword was not only does it drags, but the way it structured the game completely ruined the flow for the gameplay. Which is sad because it looks good. But having to backtrack multiple times in the same areas because they wanted to do something is really unnecessary.
JJ C what I find fascinating with gen 6 and 7 is similar to mgs4 and 5 they are problematic and decisive games in their franchise but they are decisive for different
Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon are great games & are definitely underrated as hell.
My only problem with them is that those games should’ve only have been one game & not two, but apart from that, the games are awesome.👌😎
I think it might be better if Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon were more of an sequel rather than an 3rd expansion pack.
It's the generation that introduced the firey perfection that is Kiawe to us unworthy mortals, making it Infinity/10
I enjoyed the heck out of Pokèmon Moon when it was released.
Ultra Sun/ Ultra Moon, however, kind of ruined it for me
I personally prefer the Ultra games.
Not trying to needlessly pick at this comment but what do you mean ruined? Like actively made Alola worse, or was just too similar for you to get into it?
@@andrewfederici2233 it took out all the great character development which ruined most of the cast.
And for about 80% of the game, it's basically the same game with no other contents or added areas. There are some. But not an whole lot.
I prefer to look at the split of SM/USUM as alternate timelines as I’m pretty sure that’s explicitly the intent behind them. Coming off Delta Emerald and then experiencing a “normal” Alolan timeline followed by one that was contacted by the Ultra Recon Squad and a much more bloodthirsty Necrozma, and then invaded by Rainbow Rocket, a team of bad guys who literally came from alternate timelines where they achieved their goals, just made for an awesome sort of trilogy of games.
I was upset by the changes to Lusamine and her family’s story at first, but looking at them as a pair of games feels like the intended perspective for them.
The only negative thing I can say about Sun and Moon is how often it takes away control from the player. There are so many locations and features that you are required to spend 20 mins on like the Photo Shop, Festival Plaza, and the Battle Royal things that should be optional side content for players to engage with at their leisure. Otherwise this is one of my favorite generations, because of the region, story, and characters.
I dont mind cutscenes and handholding
Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon took all this stuff that was great about the story of Sun & Moon then removed it, while Let's Go just didn't meet the standards of being full priced Switch Games let alone coming anywhere close to the standards set by the DS Pokemon Games. Why did we only get Gen1 in a Kanto Region that feels smaller than the Kanto we got from past games? The No Held Items or Abilities just came across as awkward after all these years & the no battling wild Pokemon went against the core basics of Pokemon that existed since the beginning. Kanto by itself with no upgrades isn't enough to justify $60 games.
We should have been able to battle Giovanni for rematches in Tohjo Falls at the very least, & gotten Kanto completely reimagined with new locations like a Battle Tower & possibly having Saffron feel a lot like Castelia City in terms of sheer size. Most of us had hopes we would get Johto Pokemon or at least the ability to catch 190 Species including Mew between the 2 games in an expanded Kanto Dex. Crobat, Steelix, Houndour/Houndoom, Kingdra, Scizor, Togepi/Togetic/Togekiss, & a few others should have been added. Failing that there could have been a Johto Expansion for release in 2019. Mews being extorted through Pokeball Plus instead of catchable in or transferable to Kanto further hurt the quality of the Let's Go Games.
While Sun & Moon were maybe about 86% in terms of how Solid they were, the Ultra Games were only about 80% at best. The Let's Go Games deserve a failing grade of 50% being generous, giving us an average of 72% if you ask me.
Looking back Gen 7 is miles better than Gen 8 by so much.
You forgot to mention how confusion got nerfed so hard it's completely unusable.
I don’t know how, but I played Sun 3 times and Moon once.
Although I gave up on Ultra Sun an hour in and never picked it up, and that’s probably why.
I really liked ultra sun for it's end game and post game. I know it got rid of the Lillie thing but that necrozma was sick. And the ultra space was also sick, the first couple of times. After that I loved that you could catch the legendaries and ultra beats had their own emotions. Also exp training became much easier because of Chansey. Also the battle agency made festival points much easier to get and made it easier to farm bottle caps and do the super level ups. Also the lore and music of the team leaders was just great. That was definitely my favorite post game event.
You Must Really Like The Word Also Lol.
Thanks for the gen 7 review!
no problem, thank you for watching!
TBH US/UM heavily tried to repeat the success of B2/W2 without really realizing what made B2/W2 successful in the first place. GF kept it two separate versions to maximize profit rather than expanding on version exclusive content.
Which pains me considering that Gen V who’s almost 10 years old has been first and last game to really invest into profiting off of version exclusives with location, gym leaders and so-on. B2/W2 just gave GF a reason to revamp everything they introduce and somehow made a entirely new experience with most of the content they already had.
I meant with US/UM the sky was the limit. They could’ve done a timeskip, added more locations, had the starting town be on another island. Hell even gave us Alolan Gym leaders, with literally a NPC for almost every type it was possible we could’ve had the most intriguing and diverse Pokémon league to date but it really played safe and forced the whole Necrozma story.
Despite how disappointed I am with Gen VI, at least I can find some replayability with them. But I can’t replay GenVII knowing some of the asinine changes or lack thereoff made between S/M and US/UM
Lol you are very wrong. Black 2 White 2 are the only sequels we have ever got in the Pokemon series. You can't compare a sequel to usum which is a enhanced version. And the fact that you said it was trying to be like b2/w2 shows how much new content was put into US/UM. You can't compare platinum or emerald or crystal to b2/w2 why? Because they are enhanced versions. Now let's compare US/UM to other enhanced versions and you easily see it's the best enhanced version. US/UM had new Pokemon mid gen (never done before) added difficulty had a nuzlocke killer added ultra warp ride different trials and team rainbow rocket. Platinum added the distortion world and faster surfing. Emerald added the Battle Frontier. Crystal added color. It's very easy to see that US/UM is the best enhanced version we have ever got.
Emerald neither had sister exclusive form changes for their new titular legendaries, or new dungeons like Platinum did, so does that not make Platinum an expanded version?
Hell, the first canonical sequels to ever exist in Pokémon were actually G/S/C.
US/UM had every possibility to expand on its content as a sequel game rather than a sister game that forced the need for two versions.
At least Gen V pushed the version exclusive content to the point that both B/W were distinctly different in terms of what each version offered. From Pokémon to locations, to gyms were distinctly different from what version you got. Which then valued further the necessity of dual versions as an expansion rather than just one conjoined game. B2/W2 one upped it by essentially taking already existing content and not just expanding it; but presented it to you in a whole new experience because the entire existing narrative changed, and the overworld changes to acknowledge that.
US/UM’s narrative remained relatively the same a large portion of its campaign.
The biggest issue with US/UM has as far as how people view them was ultimately presentation; the game/ content did not need to be sold as two separate versions when ultimately it still went the same vein as Emerald and Platinum. Because ultimately it rewrote the existing S/M story which albeit flawed as still relatively fine as it is. US/UM could’ve had all its elements but still expand upon the existing narrative as is. Which why people are disappointed that as dual version expansions. US/UM did not live up the expectations that B2/W2 already set
Comparing the two is like comparing a sequel to DLC
@@Galavantworks Then it's your fault for expecting too much, they said it wasnt a sequel themselves
Assationater Is it the teacher’s fault for having high expectations for a regular A student, when they’re dissatisfied with a C grade?
They didn’t acknowledge it was a sequel, nor acknowledged it meant to the story as whole. The game could’ve potential been anything, offered anything. Let alone from their previous track record could’ve been anything.
Fans need to stop enabling developers from taking criticism and accountability when lacking total transparency in marketing a product and then not pleasing everyone across the board with the final result.
Looking at you too, Kojima.
@@Galavantworks Pokemon has never been a grade A student, they always released cash grab 3rd games for 20 years straight.
I was wondering what USUM was and then I remembered oh thats right lol
Favorite to least favorite gen: 3 & 5, 4, 7, 1 & 2, 6 Hoenn was the first that I got that my brothers didn't, so it's the best for nostalgia. I didn't play Unova until last year, and I was pleasantly surprised. Sinnoh took everything you liked about Hoenn and built on it. Alola has a good story, but not much else. Kanto and Johto are good but old. Kalos was such a letdown.
My favourite gens would be: 3,5,4,7,6,2 and 1
I only started playing Pokemon since gen 3 so I guess I have a slightly different preference
4, 5, 3, 7, 6, 2, 1 for me
I started with 2 but HGSS is basically 2+. I have no real need to go back to it.
Wow so similar to mine!
3,5,7,2,4,1----->6
Kalos sucked ass, only saving grace was mega evolutions
My favorite to least are 4,5,6,3,2,7,1. Personally I would just say 4 and 5 are my definite favorites, loved everything about those two gens. (Platinum,BW2,BW,HGSS)
I'm really not too strong on my listing of the other Gens but all I know are 1 and 7 are my least favorites. :/ 6,3, and 2 fall in there somewhere.
4, 6, 5, 3, 7, 2, 1 for me
I personally find Gen 7 replayable. A good story is a good story, much like any novel. Going back in allows you a new angle to view it from, find the bits you missed before, read more into the characters and world. And yeah, Lillie might have been the main character over us, but I didn't mind that. It was a brilliant move I didn't see coming and loved being able to look at it all again with that in mind. Every story has a main character and a great supporting cast. We got to play a role in that supporting cast and view it from that angle, making some of our own stories along the way outside become the Champion. Lillie's question of what we want to do reflects that best.
Well said.
@Marav Reviews Except gameplay is that important. It's always an important part because it's an video game.
Pretty sure it's stated we are The Mc. Ppl rlly Don't listen
@@lilweedle6013 There's a trope called a Supporting Protagonist. Where the protagonist of a story is in more of a supporting character role. Yes, we are a Main Character, but this is Lillie's story. Her actions started it, she has real development through it, she drives things, and so on. We do a lot of the fighting, and we have our own journey, but the main story is Lillie's.
@Rixec2 yeah pretty sure the main story is Our story not Lillie's. But whatever you say Lillie Simp
Everyone’s saying that ultra necrozma was hard, but I think I got super lucky. I had a malamar with a quick claw that knew topsy turvey (it reverses all stat changes), along with a noivern ready with a dragonium z.
Kevin Dougherty I just Gollisopod it
Yeah if you have any wishwashi it is really good at that fight
Kevin Dougherty It was the first time since gen 2 (OG gen 2) that I was defeated by an NPC... Two times! That thing is a monster nad I love it for that.
For me it is the best first experience Ive had with a Pokemon.(The experience I had while playing it first time, not that SM were my first PKMN) Playing it the first time feel so fresh and it was amazing how diferent it was but worked. However replaying it on USUM is when I feel the fails. It was slower since I already knew the history I wasnt enjoying it as much as I was on SM.
In games like HGSS or BW I can playinh theme infinitely.
The idea of no more wild encounter battles upsets me, lol. I grew up with Platinum/Pearl, and the grind was so awful i began to enjoy it out of spite.... dont take my hours of toiling away and mildly satisfying victories away, gamefreak!
I loved that grind. It made me feel like it took work to get to the Pokemon league and actually win.
I'm fine with grinding, but I hate it when I have to sit for 3 hours spamming the a button just because of the games shitty level curve
I think for this reason an exp share(one that is balanced) is the best things they've added to the series as very little people enjoy running in circles mashing the a button
It's also one of the biggest improvements bw made as they introduced audino grinding
I really enjoyed gen 7 at first. I found SM to be great. It’s just USUM and let’s go we’re so disappointing. I have yet to even play those(even though I own them) and I doubt I’ll ever play them tbh
They have new pokemon
Juckle play USUM. Easily a top 6 or 7 Pokemon game
Tbh USUM just feels like the game the SM should’ve been released as, repackaged and sold at full price a year later. That’s just my opinion though, and despite this they’re still great games better than SM
Firestorm Infernape I don’t know, from what I have seen, the games don’t seem to add much. In fact they seem to make the games worst imo. One of my favorite parts about SM were Lillie and lusamine and they lost there roles in USUM
Juckle The games are definitely different. The story is very different and is better and there's actually a post game and other features.
I was so disappointed by the story changes in USUM. The region looks much better and I like the increased difficulty, but I hate to think of that half baked rewrite as canon.
I did actually really like playing these games/anime series, more then I thought I would.
Good/interesting video :D
i really don’t get the usum hate it brought more changes than platinum which is beloved
Pokemon is already pretty scummy releasing almost the same game 3 times and the fact that it hasent been more heavily critizied is dissapointing but its nice to see that at least releasing almost the same game 4 times finnally got a large amount of people to complain
I dont get why its scummy though nobodys forcing you to buy all 4
@@Succatag67789 no one's forced to buy anything but it does hurt your most invested player base who want to have every game released and takes advantage of their younger player base who will ask for both.
I only replay Pokémon Moon when I forget how much time I'm forced to spend on the first island. It's an absolute pain when you spend so much time on Melemele island, which is by far the most bland of the islands. Akala is massive, with great areas where you can catch unique Pokémon, such as the lake, forest, volcano, and Diglett cave. Ulaula has a desert, two large mountains, a haunted supermarket, and Po Town. Poni has a massive area (Vast Poni Canyon), as well as the island where you can find the derpy Exeggutor.
I really like the Ultra games, but I agree that it should have been DLC (wouldn't have minded if it was 30$). Ultra Necrozma was a massive surprise (I played it once to see if the rumors of its difficulty were true, then just threw my Zoroark at it with Foul Play and a Haryama disguise). The Ultra games also carry my Shiny Giratina. If it had a skip cutscene option, I would use it on replays.
I have little to say about Let's Go. I've never played them (I'm not a fan of the actual region of Kanto), and I don't think it should really be counted at Gen 7, as it has little from it, besides Alolan forms. I feel that the Pokémon Go capture mechanics would be excellently suited to a Safari Zone. (Can we mention that Giovanni has been defeated by kids *three* times now? Once by Red, once by Chase, and once by Gold in the Celebi event)
I can honestly say this this region had some of the best Pokemon designs we've gotten since Gen 4, including the trainers and the bad guys. My main issue was the hand holding and still reliance on the formula, as well as a very lackluster post-game. Regional forms and Ultra Beasts are a great idea, I just wished we got more Megas too. Overall, not a bad region. Let's Go were terrible choices for companion games and US/UM should have been DLC. The marketing was well done however, it brought a veteran like me who hasn't bothered buying a mainline Pokemon game in ten years back, even though Sw/Sw squashed my enthusiasm for the series again.
I liked how S/M was more story based and character driven, and the worldbuilding and the region definitely helped with that. The Pokemon Ranger style mechanic of riding on Pokemon was also a convenient way to get rid of HMs.
My two biggest criticisms are the Pokemon themselves: a lot of them seem like random one-off gimmicks that are pretty forgettable and some of the Alolan forms seemed kind of unnecessary. Hopefully Alola will get like a Sinnoh treatment later on where Pokemon that feel like they should evolve get evolutions that make them more relevant.
The other is something that I think is just becoming an issue in the main series games: feature bloat. You mentioned that the game felt too hand-holdy, and while I don't personally remember that being the case I do remember having all of these things like Poke Pelago, Festival Plaza, Z Moves, the camera, and some other stuff I'm probably forgetting being introduced to me and being like "when am i ever going to use these?" I understand that the game needs to bring something new to the table to keep most fans interested, but what's the point if people aren't going to use them?
I love the idea of Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon being DLCs instead of a whole "new" game, but I don´t think people would´ve been so much happier, as seen with the new SWSH DLC.
Gen seven was just disappointing for me after Sun and Moon came out there was such a disconnect between the fans and Gamefreak I didn’t hate the Ultra games and the let’s Go games actually surprised me positively but when gen 8 was announced I was hoping they would learn something and deliver something as good as gen 5 but right now. There’s still a huge disconnect. I mean the games don’t look bad storywise but the animations the graphics and the Pokémon we will not be able to transfer are really big problems. The alola region and the Pokémon were nice the story was good and the trials were a noble idea but the handholding was atrocious and the Cutscenes ruined the flow of the games to much. 🥺😔
It's an RPG, of course it has a lot of cutscenes. You know what other RPG has unskippable cutscenes, yet receives lots of praise? Final Fantasy 7. Why does it get a pass, but Pokémon doesn't?
@@AuraStrikeAce because ff7 is an old game and gen 7 is recent. Its also probally just better but i havent bothered playing it yet so im not going to acttually argue that
Sarah Bindemann the hand-holding bit you mentioned, I understand how you feel, but I also understand why that was implemented into the game being the fact that we're introduced to a different format from what we've been used to. The Rotomdex is the main key to getting from point A to point B, that's what I meant when I said I agree with the handholding, but I guess that was done to get us more at ease with the surroundings this time around.
John B aka Smooth Chocolate that makes sense to me 👍
Sarah Bindemann but I totally agree with you and I hope Shield and Sword will take it up a notch and be just as good as Sun and Moon. From what I heard, every region is confirmed to be part of the anime, I don't if the game will follow suit exactly. Are you getting Shield and Sword?
The ultra games are the ones that brought gen 7 to almost the bottom of the list for me simply because they cannibalized the story by shoving Necrozma at the last minute and not explaining anything about the guy. The looker missions are also just better from a lore standpoint than Rainbow rocket which made absolutely no sense concerning the characters involved. This is why I am always against using multiverse theory in video games. It just simply becomes too easy of a copout answer.
I am probably the only one who has SM/USUM very high on their favorite Pokemon game list. I just loved the story and the characters in Alola.
Mark van der Wal nope I’m exactly the same. Alola was incredible with the absolute best supporting cast in the series, an extremely fleshed out culture and region, memorable music and great new Pokémon. I loved Alola!
Mark van der Wal
Yeah same here buddy. Gen 4, and 7 are up there for me
I never played it. But I was wondering if it's better than the likes of Gen. 6.
Sun & Moon became my favourite games of the franchise. Yeah, I wish they had less restrictions and less tutorials. But it was the first time I was actually immersed in the story of a Pokemon game. It truly felt like a fun adventure full of memorable moments and characters.
Platinum, B/W 2 and USUM taught me one thing: Never buy the first game of a new generation. Always wait for the enhanced version. Gonna do just that with sword and shield.
To be fair, BW2 was actually an sequel to Black & White rather than an enhanced version. Plus, Black & White 1 are still good Pokemon games as well. It's rather or not you like an story driven mixed with the gameplay in an Pokemon game.
Plus, not all enhanced version are gonna be better than the original 2 versions. Cough... Emerald. Cough.. Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon.
Meanwhile gen 6 gamers 💀
I've only read the manga but I need something to watch while waiting for the pizza that is taking forever. It's been over two hours.
Why are the Let's go games considered gen 7? They have waaaaay more things in common with gen 8, in fact I believe they were released closer to SW/SH than USUM...
I loved gen 7! The last good gen until the switch games...
I personally prefer the US/UM Lusamine to the S/M Lusamine. She's just much more likable in those games.
She wasn't supposed to be likeable in Og sm
@@Sean-fz8if I know. But I still prefer her more likable version.
I just don't like how she was handled in USUM. She was already good in SM. Why make her an dislikable & uninteresting character in USUM?
They should give the games the ability to adapt to your pokemons level.
For instance the game acknowledges what your highest level Pokemon is when you challenge a gym leader and adjusts the gyms leaders pokemons levels and move sets accordingly.
This way it inspires players to train all their Pokemon equally and also provides a fun challenge without ever being too overpowered
3:00 damn that was a great change I never noticed
Did you just not mention the whole battle tree mechanic? lol
A NEW REWIEW!
YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES
Looking back on gen 7 were totem pokemon a beta for dynamax?
I never played Gen 7... none of it excited me so I skipped it... it's nice to watch a review of the generation though
Honestly I don't fully agree with the way you reviewed the Ultra versions. To me they get the "We actually needed this" Award. To me the story seems more fleshed out and much more... you know... story like, since the original Sun and Moon didn't really strike anything in me. For me USUM are the best Pokemon games, not better than BW and BW2 though, but certainly at the same level. Alola is pretty much the Unova of the 3DS era, especially thanks to USUM. To me SM was just more like an intro to Gen 7, and USUM was the real Gen 7. I feel like it was even more challenging than SM, rivaling the level of difficulty Gen 5 gave to me. Overhaul, I personally loved USUM, to that I say congrats to Gamefreak. I hope Sword and Shield lives up to the expectation, and yes I do have more hope instead of blatantly bashing on Sw/Sh just for the likes of it and the "muh Nationallll Pokeedeckssss" stuff
I would've been fine with Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon if it were more likely to be an sequel to Sun and Moon instead of being another timeline. And the story is the Ultra games are absolutely garbage.
i'm 28 and had never played a pokemon game in my life but wanted to finally try one. my sister gave me lets go pikachu and it was the perfect stepping stone to get into the series! i'm glad i played that one first because now that i've gone on to play other games (sword, arceus, violet) i can see how the more longterm fans wouldn't have liked lets go so much
HAHA YES GEN 5 THE BEST
Just binged all your ratings videos lol. I'm sure you can't tell which Gen I think is my favorite.
If you want to continue these reviews you could do the spinoffs for every generations
Easy fix for the Necrozma taking over Lusemine being evil blunder:
keep the USUM version of the scenes where all the Trial Captains are batting the Ultra Beasts, except sneak in another small scene involving Necrozma in the background searching for something. Then, keep Lusemine evil, do the Nihilego merge, ect, you and Lillie go after her, you battle her, Lusemine gets knocked out, and upon you three and Guzma returning to Alola - you see Necrozma flying towards Nebby, as he's finally found him. The USUM scene where Nebby & Necrozma are fighting ensues, Necrozma successfully wins and merges with Nebby, Ultra Recon Squad show up, heal you, tell you that Necrozma has fled to their world. Lillie calls Wickwe and gets her to fly her and Lusemine to the Foundation - and now the fate of the world is up to you. *ONLY* you. The protagonist must go face this beast, this Ultra Necrozma, alone, with no support, while the Ultra Recon Squad are busy temporarily evacuating their world.
BOOM. Lille and Lusemine's arcs remain intact, the Ultra Recon Squad has both something to do AND an excuse to not try and double battle it with you or something, while Lillie is still the protagonist of the Lusemine story, the after effects of the Lusemine arc creates the final boss of which the player must assume the role as the *true* protagonist of the story to conquer, and the game is now made somewhat more challenging due to having 2 boss battles back to back instead of one.
I liked how ultra's lusamine was more stable just keep the lilly island scene and show her talk to her mom
Ultra necrozma arc can be put in the post game. Let the Lusamine family drama be a different thing
Gen 7 was the only thing that kept the 3ds alive
3DS had a great library. Pokémon helped but Mario, Zelda, Kirby, Metroid, Fire Emblem, Animal Crossing, Kid Icarus, and other franchises had good entries for the console and of course Super Smash Bros 3DS was a great way to play smash on the go for the first time
It’s weird to me that more people don’t talk about how good the story is in S/M. It’s the only other pair that rivals or even surpasses B/W. Lusimine and Guzma are two of the most complex and interesting villains in the whole series. the entire main cast had really good character development (Lillie especially, but Gladion and even Hau had great character arcs that played off their backstory and motivations).
Wow, it seems like you keep uploading these as soon as I finish them. I've only played Moon so far, but I was pleasantly surprised by it. The story was enjoyable, the main characters had some solid development, the difficulty was just right (even having Exp share on the entire game I was perfectly leveled for almost every challenge, even under leveled against final Lusamine), lots of good balance changes, etc. Of course being a Pokemon game it has bad pacing issues until nearly the 3rd island, but it picked up enough to where I stopped holding a grudge against it by the end game (speaking of which the Pokemon League was pretty lame), and the post game is decent enough (enjoyed the Looker missions like always). I didn't really care about the Alolan forms (besides a couple like Ninetales), but the original Alola pokemon were pretty fun, although god are they slow. I thought up until I beat Moon that the Ultra games were sequels like BW2, only to be extremely disappointed in what I found just before trying them out. Seems like a fine way to replay Gen 7 in the future, but really sucks they aren't proper sequels given how well BW2 turned out.
Gen 7 was a mixed bag for me.
Sun & Moon was pretty good, it felt like a fresh take on the franchise with quality of life improvements. But it also had gimmicky and backward decisions (like Z-moves). It didn't feel as new as Gen 6 or Gen 5.
I haven't really played the ultra games.
And Let's Go is trash.
Phil 21 lets go is better than the rest of gen 7
Idunno.
Considering its bad controls, poor selection of about 153 Pokemon, and lackluster post game, I think LetsGo was the weakest of Gen 7.
Is the game better than X and Y at the very least?
Sun and moon- Great but felt lacking
Ultra Sun and Moon - What sun and moon should have been so it feels like we’ve been cheated
Let’s go- great nostalgia but felt ripped off because of Pokémon Go catering. Pokémon yellow is still my favourite game but Let’s go missed the mark
Exactly
Gen 7 is my personal favorite generation. I feel that the trials actually did change up the formula and really made the Alola region feel unique and interesting, whereas the other regions kind of all feel like clones of each other. Plus imo the story was incredible in both games. LGPE sucked but I don’t personally really count those when I talk about gen 7.
I think that Let’s Go Pikachu and Let’s Go Eevee is canon in the timeline but it just takes place in a different universe like sun and moon next to Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon
I really wish SM/USUM had cutscene skips, USUM at least had some great boss fights but replaying is a bit of a pain.
Alolan forms are awesome and I'm glad Galarian forms are a thing.
SM has my favourite characters in the series probably though USUM made some questionable changes like Lusamine.
I really love the new Alola Pokemon aside from like Shinotic
My copy of ultra sun is still on the floor of my car because I couldn't take Rotom interrupting me every time I left the menu. I disdain gen 7. It's what pushed me to Yokai Watch
Z moves are basically just Gen 5's Gem items
I love Gen 7 but I will always love Gen 5 and 6 the most. Gen 5 is what got me into Pokémon and made me into the Pokémon Fan I am today.I love Gen 6 because of the hype surrounding it and Mega Evolution was an awesome mechanic.
Pokemon Sun and Moon easly my favorite games with heartgold and Black and White, for me was a wonderful game, also Lillie story was my favorite and cried at the end.
Pokemon USUM basically meh, very unnesesary, the SM story was very excelent so dont need to change, it Just feels empty, i like hau more development but Lillie and lusamine was rushed this time, i prefer better SM.
Lets go P&E, I Will Just think is an spin off or no canon.
I prefer fire red and leaf green, over lets go and red and blue.
Let’s Go is the worst Pokémon game ever made.
Nate Cruz sun and moon to me is the worst let’s go was a lot more raw fun with the new catching mechanic it is maybe the most fun way to play kanto
@@thebandanapirates8591 The only problem I had with Lets go was motion controls in the catching mechanic. Other than that it was a very fun casual pokemon experience.
Sword and Shield are the worst
Nate Cruz I had a more miserable time with pokemon Y.
It's funny how Let's Go has natures despite it being a Gen 3 introduced mechanic plus if think there's never been a set of Kanto games with all the current day mechanics like natures, held items, abilities, physical special split, the GTS, etc. and Let's Go could've been that however it wasn't that
HG/SS has Kanto and all the current stuff. Not purely Kanto, but it's the closest.
FireRed and LeafGreen DO have breeding, held items, natures, and abilities, plus some Gen II and Gen III Pokémon (and full National Pokédex compatibilty at that). The only things that it does not have is online multiplayer (though it does have wireless local despite it being a GBA game) and the Physical/Special split, both mechanics being introduced in Gen IV.
In addition to that, it also features a postgame sidequest in the Sevii Islands (absent from Let's Go), and competitive playing through the Battle Tower. Despite not having HD 3D graphics, FRLG offers a deep, satisfying experience, even by today standards. LGPE feels shallow and simple in comparison, in my opinion.
So yeah, a Gen III game has more features than a Gen VII game.
A major problem with Let's Go is how they took out stuff to make it more like gen 1, but didn't fully commit to it, leaving in a lot of things introduced after. As a result, the game feels half hearted and ironically shows how gen 1 isn't as great as Game Freak wants people to think if even _they_ don't want to go all the way back.
I actually played Ultra Moon for the first time this year back in March. I feel like I had a significantly better time playing these games than the original. I figured this was the kinda game I could wait off on and honestly I wasn't paying much attention to it ahead of it's launch.
Idk why people like to hate on USUM, I actually really enjoyed it.
the only reason people hate on it is that it was a big cashgrab.
the number of improvements basically didn't match those in Black/White 2 and it was way too similar to Sun/Moon.
I like Sun and Moon because of many call backs to previous games. The Z Moves were cool, Ride Pokemons were a nice feat, and the Trials were interesting. But what really made me annoyed of the game is how easy and hand holding it was. Makes it hard for me to go back to replay it.
I pretty much got the game to run up the 100 streak at the battle tree
"Back to The Bag Nebby"
