      Ricardo Serrano Yea, that's what I've been trying to find everywhere on RUclips. What this new 4 stroke emd sounds like. There's tons of videos of it, yet, there isn't a single one where I can actually hear the damn thing. My conclusion is, it's the quietest damn 4,000+ hp diesel engine ever made. Seriously, put headphones on and listen to video. They sound like damn electric locomotives running off cantilevers for power.

    • @SD457500

      They sound like a vacuum cleaner had a baby with a jet engine. It is a very unique, yet quiet sound for an EMD.

      They're meant to run as quiet as possible. Noise does not create power.

    • @joshandkorinna
      @joshandkorinna 7 лет назад +3

      Adrian Neils I'd say there's a general correlation. But yes, I understand that. It's just a little disheartening as a rail fan to see one of the things that you love so much about trains being curbed. But I understand that the desires of rail fans have absolutely zero influence on the decisions of manufacturers. I believe most rail fans understand that. I hope so anyway.

    Funny how the railroads got along without grade crossing horns for well over 150 years and now the FRA says we must use them? How about a different tack, if you ignore the train crossing lights and bell and /or gates and get hit by the train the motorist is responsible for the damage to the railroad. For damn sure railroad trains don't leave the reservation and go hunting automobiles and trucks. I personally ran trains in my career as a locomotive engineer and have to see the idiots every time I go to sleep that died in front of the train I was running. From what one guy that stepped in front of a commuter train at 70 mph and less than 100 feet away to four teenagers playing chicken with a 56 Chevy sedan at a crossing, driver stalled it as the exhaust disappeared and they had plenty of time to get out and didn't try, car went 173 feet before it touched the ground three died instantly and the last died 11 days later. And a local cop pointed me out to three of the parents at the accident scene and to this day they still say I killed their sons. Those were my first and last deaths with me as the engineer and I still say hi to them every night. My wife tells me I yell at them in my sleep. Took me seven years after I married her to tell her about it and the first happened in 1974 and the last in 1979, guess I got lucky since then until I retired.
    Sorry guys I guess I talk too much.

    Put a K5 on those units please! This is America, we are big and loud. K5’s sound so much better. The shape of the new locomotives are cool, but that horn, not even a horn. Fill up those air compressors and put those horns to good use. If I can’t hear the Doppler effect, than its not good enough of a horn. Gotta be loud and let people know your coming. I mean you can hear this one, but make it pleasing to the ear. One of the main reasons I love trains is because of the k5’s. Get a steel bell on there instead of these Electric bells. Electronics I’m pretty sure have a better chance of messing up. Put some air in those tanks and kill my eardrums. America, loud and proud!

    • @Slim_Slid
      @Slim_Slid Год назад +1

      And...It never happened...
      Union Pacific owns 90 SD70ACE-T4's and CSX only has 10 of them.
      Norfolk Southern canceled their orders,but at that they sell and get rid of many other locomotives than you think.
      As seen here,BNSF was attempting to get some on their roster but then changed the decision for some reason.
      Also,the SD70ACE-T4's didn't get alot of sales due to numerous problems at first,mainly dealing with computer and electronic systems,and even the fuel injection system aside from high price.
      That's why Union Pacific had them in storage for awhile after immediately putting them out of service,to get updates and repairs going.

    Hard to hear the engine sound with these horns blaring all the way. But apparently they much sound like the GEVO T4's, muffled and nearly like an electric locomotive.

  • @jamesshanks2614
    @jamesshanks2614 7 лет назад +2

    It is a common practice among locomotive builders to paint the new demonstrator locomotive's in a specific railroads paint scheme to give a railroad one less item to not buy the new model locomotive's. All the have to do and EMD would be happy to do so is paint over EMD and paint BNSF on the side and front and rear of every new locomotive BNSF ordered.
    The grade crossings horns, is this a federal requirement for grade crossings now? If it is I would have to believe non of the lawmakers live within hearing distance of a railroad. I do believe the new electronic grade crossings horns will be a new target of everyone who lives within earshot. Anybody agree?

    If you think about it, GE and EMD meet T4 standards by using a a larger version of your household vacuum cleaner. The exhaust goes into a few chambers and is spun around throwing the particles to the side as the cleaner gas goes out. That's the easiest way I can explain it. Sadly, goodbye to the chugging GE.

    • @SD457500
      @SD457500  8 лет назад

    • @RyanHatterer-Ryanns999
      @RyanHatterer-Ryanns999 8 лет назад

      They're others who can explain it better, but in short that's how it works. Cool if you ask me

    • @atsf3780
      @atsf3780 7 лет назад +2

      Ryan Hatterer
      that is definitely not how it works.
      a metered portion of the exhaust gasses are sent through an "EGR Cooler", which is basically a radiator, and mixed with the combustion air intake. The amount of cooled exhaust entering into the cylinders is carefully controlled to create a slower, more controlled burn to prevent the extremely high temperature spikes that can cause NOx formation.
      there is no after treatment or particulate filtering in the GE tier 4's.

    • @RyanHatterer-Ryanns999
      @RyanHatterer-Ryanns999 7 лет назад

      Christian Javier Are you sure on that? that doesn't explain why you can hear a vacuum like sound, telling me that it's a form of after treatment. really wish there was some kind of video to show

    • @rkproductions1141
      @rkproductions1141 8 лет назад

      That's an automated crossing horn, it plays the sequence from the crossing so the train doesn't have to, they have it at crossings where trains that travel at high speeds roll through. Obviously trains go through at high speeds through that first spot. Other places like Dekalb Illinois and Grand Island Nebraska have them too.

    I took EMD 20 odd years and an ownership change but it seems they finally perfected the 1010 (nee 265H) prime mover. Good for them. Looks odd having the units fully painted in the client scheme but with ElectroMotive lettering but they, they were going to paint them one way or the other anyway, right? Might as well make them fit in to the client's roster, it might drum up some more sales.

      Sadly BNSF ended up not buying the t-4

    • @Slim_Slid
      @Slim_Slid Год назад

      EMD didn't perfect the 1010J...It was Caterpillar.Caterpillar owns Progress Rail and Electro Motive Division.General Motors dumped the division in 2005,and then in 2010 was when Caterpillar did the acquisition.Before hand,there was a different company in that gap.
      EMD was the subsidiary to PRLX and that's how CAT got both of them.
      Caterpillar was responsible for rebuilding the entirety of the 1010J for the SD70ACE-T4,using the same basis as the 265H.
      If T4 EPA regulations weren't a thing,the SD70ACE-T4's would have 6,000 HP just like what the original SD90MAC's & MACH's had before being discontinued.
      Caterpillar even has the C280 which is very similar and was based on the 265H/1010J itself.The prime movers in different applications can range as V12's-V16's with 4,700-6,000 HP.

      Thank you for watching, and the comment! In the USA, trains are required to sound the horn for any crossing unless it is marked as a quote zone. They are also supposed to blow the horn if something is too close to the tracks.

    • @Mcnibbus
      @Mcnibbus 2 года назад

      Basic USA horn sequences
      Two short blasts- Train is moving
      Three short blasts- train is moving but in reverse
      2 long a short and a long- crossing sequence and a warning get out of the way
      Laying on the horn something is up ahead that isn’t moving ( 90% of the time its a vehicle like a car or a truck that causes this)

    what is so bad about the wayside horn?.. The idea of it is to hopefully remove consistent repair or replacement of the unit cut back on manufacturing coasts and the ability to not use extra air out of the air system, any amount of air saved is air well used. Plus that thing can be heard from miles away, as long as it's heard loud and proud it's just as effective as a normal diaphragm air based horn. Just like the ebell it might sound like ass but Rail roads and the average joe doesn't care.. it serves it's job wile offering better efficiency, quality and coast cutting.

    • @SD457500
      @SD457500  4 года назад

      Thanks for the comment, and watching as well. They are meant to benefit the neighbors around there. Using a train horn is part of normal operations, so I don't think it has much to do with that. The horn can only be heard in the direct area that it is sounding for.

    • @FFred-us9tw
      @FFred-us9tw 2 года назад +1

      What are you even talking about? The purpose of wayside horns is not to cut back on repair or replacement of Locomotive airhorns. Nor is it to save air on a locomotive. Locomotive horns use a minuscule amount of air. The wayside horns are to appease people who live near a railroad crossings who don’t want to hear train horns.

    The new SD70ACE-T4 locmotives are pretty nice. Unfortunately, government regulations forced GE and EMD to create their respective locomotives out of necessity, which means stuffing an exhaust system full of filters may not be the best long term reliability solution for supposed cleaner air.
    On another note, it's a shame how a nation that's entire westward expansion was built by railroads suddenly hates them so much that they try to regulate railroads on their own property, with idiotic tricks like quiet zones and these absolutely awful wayside horns. Communities around railroad tracks have no jurisdiction over railroads since the railroads don't belong to them, making quiet zones are illegal in actuality. A bunch of crybabies, people are getting softer every year. Somebody bring the Huggies for these folks...

      Anytime. Yes I'm with you, me too. Railroading will always be the most efficient all-around method of land transportation. Much, much better than highways clogged with trucks like we're currently facing. I subbed to your channel.

      🙄Quiet zones are not illegal. They are approved by the FRA. Any town can petition the railroad to make a crossing a quiet zone. So long as they’re willing to accept liability for grade crossing accidents at the crossing most railroads are happy to make a crossing a quiet zone.

    What kind of horns are on the new units? They don't sound like air horns. As far as BNSF buying units from what I read on a BNSF news letter it is slow times they have a lot of units all over in storeage in Galesburg IL. they have 100 brand new units in storeage with no software in them yet it was said that they have even canceled orders that havent been built yet. Were I live in Ia on the transcon all I have seen here for the last year is old old units I hear everyday they are calling Ft Worth cause of some kind of trouble with the units one worker I talked to down by the depot he said it is all junk units they have been running cause of the loss of the coal contracts & oil trains. He is right about coal I live near the Hannibal sub there has been a big drop in coal trains over the year. I didnt know BNSF had the T4s tell I seen this I knew UP had them they to run junk units here NS has dropped trains coming here they use to be 4 each way now luck to see 1 CSX same way they all park in the yards here over night then go out the next day back north.
