The day when I will feel most happy is when EMD takes over GE to be the #1 locomotive builder again. Good job guys! Keep EMD's legacy going with safe, reliable and powerful locomotives.
As a Locomotive Engineer, I'm grateful that the new cabs brought back the teardrops that are angled. I couldn't stand the rectangular vertical paned windows, they caused glare something fierce. the interior design changes, especially desk space is welcomed as well. I look forward to possibly getting one of these in the future for cold weather testing on BNSF like GE did last winter.
+Aquamassage I like everything about the GE cabs except how the new AAR stands don't angle quite a much as the old school stands did so it's harder to reach the throttle without having to sit forward.
NTSB recommended to EMD that they eliminate the "isolated" cabs due to failures in the field. the big wreck on the BN at Red Oak IA resulted in two deaths because of that. It appears as though Cat chose to ignore all of that with this unit.
I don't know. It looks isolated. I would hope it isn't. The isolated cabs were louder than solid mount cabs, didn't ride any better, and had a tendency to deform in wrecks.
EMD was always my favorite, and will forever be my favorite. They put the Haul, in Overhaul. I want to see more EMD’s in the future, or just more EMD’s over GE units. Gets pretty boring after a while.. Keep up the work guys. You’re doing great, and you’re a dream company of mine.!
@@z0rzx362 YEAH, EZ financing!! Only thing a old GE is good for is melted scrap....to rebuild a 30-40 year old EMD. NOTHING about a GE is superior to EMD. EMD just rested on their arses too long before responding....like much of our industry in America. All i can tell you is, sd40s and such are rebuilt because theres something left....LOOK at 50 years worth of rosters sir.
sounds good - nice to hear from a team of dedicated motivated individuals working towards a common goal that increases the quality and usefulness of a product - kudos
It's great to finally see how this locomotive will look. I know a lot of thought is going into this project, and I'm confident it'll be a great performer when it hits the market. Thanks for sharing (all the train nerds appreciate it)! -Cam
She looks magnificent! I have to admit that I didn't have high hopes for EMD after I'd heard Caterpillar bought it from GM. I thought it was just a move to stroke the egos of the corporate execs and that EMD would ever be the company it deserved to be. I was wrong. From everything I've seen so far and heard (and yes, I know what advertising is) it looks as if Caterpillar is making EMD a better company than what they'd first bought. If this new loco can meet emissions standards, and still have the needed power and reliability, and EMD/Caterpillar keep and grow their reputation, then EMD is in good hands with Caterpillar and GE have some serious competition on their hands. I would like to see a new switcher, and a new AMTRAK and Seattle Sounder locomotive, as well. I guess, over time.
Hallo! Was für ein Anblick und welche mächtige Erscheinung. Da kommt man als Lokführer aus Deutschland an schwärmen und träumen. Wie gerne würde ich mir so eine Lok mal in echt anschauen und eventuell ein Stück fahren dürfen. (german)
It is nice to see that a product like this has returned to it routes a bit with the return of the F45 Windshield type glass that has been sported in EMD products through the ages as it is a huge safety improvement to the SD70 Series along with the integrated changes and up grades. EMD in my mind has always been longevity and quality and with the standards provided and the proof of use in the secondary railroads like MRL and G&W it shows a great product returning to the field. and my guess would be that the upgrades in the T4 series could also be designed with limited adjustment for all previous SD70 Models since they are all modular and simple mod-Kits could help raise the standards of older models .. great work.. i have yet to see a T4 on Cajon while recording and i am looking forward to it along with their use on The Tehachapi Loop ..
This is an EMD video. So it took me a while to figure out who the heck Billy worked for. He has a CAT sweater on, he talks about "us" being a subsidiary of CAT, but then talks about EMD being "them" and the "EMD acquisition being "a great thing for 'us'". HUH? After replaying that portion of the video several times, I fingally guessed that he works for Progress Rail. Really, guys, you should slug his initial appearance as saying president and CEO, "Progress Rail". It's also a little sad to see that absolutely NOBODY in the EMD product video has EMD-logoed apparel on. It's like the brand disappeared and Progress Rail (a relatively-new name) is the brand being marketed. Actually very sad. I think EMD, I think of generations of American design and craftsmanship. I hear Progress Rail, I think (unfortunately) of newspaper articles alleging that parts were being chucked off the pier into the bay.
+William Candee I really wish they would go and tell all those people who lost their jobs in London Ontario that they really think that the acquisition of EMD was a great thing for them
William Candee Should they *_drop_* the _Progress Rail_ name? From a marketing stand point, EMD is a much more recognized name in the rail, marine & power generation industries.
Its great to see the CAT's claws in EMD finally. It looks like they found the focus on product that has been missing for years as GM was melting down and finally sold it off.
Progress Rail has a new SD70ACe-T4 Locomotive with the EMD 1010 engine that started on you-tube 2 weeks ago. SD70ACe-T4 is expected to begin in United States of America soon. I hope CSX Transportation orders new SD70ACe-T4 with EMD 1010 Engine that use fast speed very reliable and amazing.
Will it be enough, though? GE has already gotten a good jump with the ET44 series, and at least four railroads already have them painted and out on freights. Are you going to be able to get a good enough start on the SD70ACe-T4 and still make a reliable product able to compete with GE?
Rumor on the street is EMD finally has an Alternator starting system like GE's employ? Hopefully the EMDEC cable is protected and uses more robust connectors to the fuel nozzles? Can a bong test be run from the FIRE screen or do you still have to hook a laptop up to the EMDEC connector? It would also be nice if the EMDEC connector was moved into the cab, instead of being in the contractor compartment, for entering injector codes? It's nice to see the Knife switch back in the cab instead of being in the Alternator compartment. Where is the rear door to access the grid blower? How are we going to service the Grid Blower brushes? I hope you haven't gone backwards to the SD80Mac method of servicing the grid blower brushes? Why are the baggie filters located behind the rad section? Is the turbo now on the front of the diesel engine?
No knife switch on the ACe. It is air start. For service cut out we have to lock out the air valve for the starter after it has been bled out. I have worked on a few GE models, the MAC, and the ACe. The Ace is the most straight forward for servicing of the bunch.
I love seing a sd70ace! Hopefully in the future if i make a railroad ill make sure to buy at least 50 of this! Including the SD80ACe from brazil if possible!
I can`t wait to see SD70ACe-T4 EMD 1010 Locomotives painted on CSX Transportation, Norfolk Southern, Union Pacific, BNSF Railway, Canadian National, Canadian Pacific among other Class 1 Railroad.
Thanks for sharing. I thought Progress rail only did rebuilds! Good luck. Looks like a large space is over the trucks. Are their plans available so I could model this new loco?
Hi Eric. We don't have plans available, but there are some technical specs, photos, and 360 models available here: www.progressrail.com/en/rollingstock/locomotives/freight/sdacet4.html
Wonder how long it’ll be before they develop new yard switchers. The ones around now are getting up there in age, even from a rebuilding standpoint, and as of now there aren’t many on the market.
EMD needs to fill the industry space that is missing, the 4 axle switching and general service engine. The world is running out of them and no ones making one.
Brazil, the world's eighth economy has woken up to the railroads. There are EMD and GE factories. You see many ES58ace, ES43BBi, SD80ace, SD70ace-BB, AC44i, all new, not reconditioned. I left Dusseldorf to earn my honest money on the railroad business in Brazil. (I.e.
Pretty soon, we, as a Nation, will need to either convert our Railroad lines to Electricity, or we can convert all of our diesel locomotives to run on Bio-Fuels. Imagine, combining the power of Teir-4 Emissions with Bio-Fuels, and you have the cleanest Diesel.
Why aren't the car body leads and traction motor leads protected by some kind of conduit? Most of the problems with the ACe's are ground relay problems caused by breakdown of the car body lead's insulation. Why so many separate computer systems? EMDEC, EM2000, and FIRE screens all have to be updated separately, why not have one central computer control system? Why is the rear door that gives access to the grid blower bolted shut? This makes grid blower maintenance difficult.
Interesting! I just realized ... the EMD 265 engine has 1,010 cubic inches per cylinder ... and this engine here is labeled as the "1010" engine ... so is this actually a variant of the 265?! I'm interested to learn more!
+Benjamin “Ozias” Esposti It's a brand new V engine made by EMD/Progressrail/CAT that has the same capacity as the old H one. You can read the SD70ACe-T4 brochure online.

+Marlowe Barnes We don't know what this new engine sounds like but they made a big change in that it is a 4 stroke instead of a 2 stroke. Emd has been using 2 strokes since the beginning. GE's also use 4 strokes so it will be interesting to see if it sounds like a GE.
+Historymaker2001 the 265H engine was introduced in the American market in 1999. It's something of a hybrid, in that it's a 265 with Cat parts. +Historymaker2001 You basically repeated what I said in far less words. you don't get extra points for all the production dates, rivets, and serial numbers. EMD and GE regularly utilize a number of testers before actual production, with the 8200's being part of that. Regular production orders of the 6000 hp units did not start until 1999 for both EMD and GE.
+Historymaker2001 Ok fair enough, but your posts came across the same way. Regardless. time will tell if the new Cat engine is a success. GE did very well adapting the 7H into the Gevo. As far as 6000 hp goes, the big 16-cyl ES/ET (5850 hp) will probably be the last of its kind in a rail application, but it is holding up for CSX and many export units.
+Historymaker2001 GE owes Bombardier a huge thank you. When they bought all the Alco stuff from them, they got a headstart against EMD with many aspects of locomotive design, including passenger design (LRC), AC drive (M640), cooling and dynamic brake improvements, trucks, you name it, it was borrowed, hacked, sliced and diced into all the new stuff from the P40 on up.
Excited to see EMD jumping back into the fight!!! Awesome locomotive!

Regardless. time will tell if the new Cat engine is a success.
Send it to Indiana, on a Norfolk Southern freight.
EMD needs to bring it back to America , Catapillar would bring EMD back to where it belongs, pulling for America !
Is the 1010 Engine a newer variant of the 265H?
+scribklu Yes. The 265H is 1010 cubic inches of displacement per cylinder. That's where they got the number 1010 from.
