I got to see Tommy Bolin with the James Gang in 1973 in Burns Auditorium, Rock Hill, SC with Brownsville Station opening. Tommy going for it big time, showing a clarity of thought which defied his dreadful addiction to heroin. This could almost have been an audition jam, in fact it probably sounds similar to the morning a rainbow haired youngster wandered into Pirate Sound, plugged in and blew away Deep Purple. He was Ritchie's equal, but different and wonderful. Ian's drumming is terrific.

Responding to an old ass comment, sorry, but just putting a balance on things.
Just check out the list of musicians who played on Tommy's "Teaser" recorded prior to joining Purple. If he wasn't a badass those big names wouldn't have bothered; Jeff Porcaro, David Foster, Jan Hammer, Phil Collins etc. What a great guitar player. Gone too soon, man. RIP.
He (Tommy) was an enigma for sure, the unfortunate Deep Purple period notwithstanding, he showed pure brilliance in fleeting glimpses, and was really just getting recognition when he passed away so needlessly, recordings like this are just ear candy, and thank you Marcel for posting it :)
Tommy and Ian sound so inspired. I have an unreleased recording of Tommy's band jamming on equipment that belonged to a band that was working at the hotel where they were staying. Fantastic stuff.
