Retired psych nurse here. She wasnt clanging, which is a type of rambling rhyming. More like loose associations and psychotic delusions.
Why they think dragging her on 2 car rides, and a plane ride, mostly at night, is a good idea, is beyond me. Of course thats going to worsen her paranoia.
Phil came across more like a police interrogater than a therapist. No wonder she asked if he was a cop.

Reminder that Shelley Duvall passed from diabetic complications. Cirrhosis of the liver and a build up of proteins and ammonia in the body cause this type of disoriented thinking and can mimic the memory loss and disorientation symptoms of dimentia.
I dont see dimentia, she doesnt look lost despite it all. She looks scarily aware. People with dimentia or Alzheimer's look very lost, almost similar to a Thousand Yard Stare.

While at first it may look like schizophrenia, diabetes can sometimes cause irrational behavior and mental confusion. She did pass away from complications due to diabetes. This would also explain the sores on her legs. I've even seen UTI's cause extreme confusion expressed as paranoia. Combine that with someone who's experienced abuse/trauma and it may look like mental illness even though there's a physiological explanation.
Btw, this interview was done in 2016. She passed away in July 2024. In between, her mental health improved dramatically as seen on the Grimmlifecollective RUclips channel's lengthy interview which was filmed a year ago. Mrs. Duvall was coherent, interesting, and gracious during that interview.

      @Padraigp Месяц назад +3

Yeah its just like he's found a person who's famous and delusional and showing her off how crazy she is instead of even explaining any of her symptoms or maybe explaining what happened from her. Friends and family. I'd bet her friends and family didn't want her to do this. He could have made a show explaining how she has these issues and what can help etc. That would have actually been interesting and educational instead he chose to just expose her ..he's like that though. No surprise. If he had had Robin Williams on he would have done the same.

For anyone who loves Shelley and is upset by this interview, I strongly urge you to seek out another interview on the grimmlifecollective channel. This was done AFTER the Dr Phil interview, and in it, she's as sane and lucid as anyone reading this. Not only that, but she's also witty, charming and totally endearing. If you don't love her already, you will after seeing it.
There's every chance that Dr Phil drugged her to get her to behave this way. With a previous celebrity who was struggling with alcoholism, he left a bottle of vodka in his dressing room, which the celebrity drank, then a show assistant urged him to take a Xanax on top of this 'to calm his nerves'. The result is that he's a sobbing wreck throughout the interview. Could Dr Phil have sneaked an hallucinogenic drug into a drink before the interview? I think it's possible.
But do watch that interview on grimmlifecollective - it'll warm your heart.

But after that it was heartbreaking that as a “doctor” he let her go.
I don’t blame her in the end, even if he could help her, she didn’t want HIS help or to return to the show.
If before that, he truly was/ is a fan, by roughly 20 minutes, even if he needed to fill 40 minutes of time, kindly ask her if they could continue to speak off camera. Whether she was aware of it or not, thinking a hornet went through her back and before what she went into with Robin Williams and the Bermuda triangle was definitely time to gently go to commercial break, NOT exploit her and truly offer her help, seeing she was a sweet but very unhinged person. The rest was a heartbreaking train wreck!!

I have ADHD, and if I don’t take care of myself at 47, I’m not as “nice” as she was but I sound like this when I’m overwhelmed, just trying to explain I’m overwhelmed and you’re throwing so much in my face, that you ARE taking away my attention at what is important for me to function safely and understand generally what is going on around around me.
For example, I’m not an expert on cell phones but if I’m forced to deal with a cellphone situation right NOW and can’t understand I need to go for a walk to unwind and come back, not feel forced to sit there 4 hours, get in your car, and have a car accident because you’re mentally THAT tired it becomes unsafe.
It’s irritating to have to repeat that while you’re writing stuff down, using all your energy to focus, to not take up their time and have some of your own to function SAFELY. At 37 minutes, I know that type of mental tiredness she means. It’s not because I’m irrational like how she was getting after that but overthinking and explaining, I’m tired. We’re done. We have to do the rest tomorrow more refreshed.

    R.I.P. Shelley Alexis Duvall (July 7, 1949 - July 11, 2024)
A truly unique and unforgettable actress who left an indelible mark on the world of cinema! I choose to remember her authentic performances in "The Shining" and "Popeye." She was the perfect actress to portray Olive Oyl! It was heart-wrenching to see her struggle; she deserved much better treatment from Dr. Phil. Shame on you, Dr. Phil, for airing that!

The story of Shelley Duvall is not some tragedy that's topped off with mental illness. Look what she accomplished in her life? Look at all the memories she has made for generations. So sad. As an actress I can see how the manipulation of others behind the scenes destroyed her. They do this for control of the person, and money. They administer drugs under the guise of needed treatment which can over time lead to addictions and failing health in actors. Depending on the drugs some can totally whack the metabolism out of balance causing weight gain as you see here.Drugs themselves can also cause delusions. When you see her talk about acting she lights up. Used and abused by an industry which has a very dark side. May she now be at peace .

Dr Phil: completely ignores everything she says, doesn’t care, keeps enforcing the idea of doctors to someone who clearly doesn’t trust doctors and is mentally ill in a way that seems pushy and stressful, making her cower away from help she needs especially when the first thing she said was she needs help.
What a way to escalate this poor woman. What a way. Got her to the point of threatening his life, that’s how stressed she was. Now we know -
Shelley Duvall passed away yesterday from complications due to diabetes. IMO-Shelley's diabetes went untreated for a long time, causing her some mental illness. The spots she kept showing on her legs and arms were from a damaged liver. When the liver can't filter the foods we eat or medications we take, we fall into a dementia mental state. How do I know? My father suffered from the same issues Shelley had in her life. Shelley's memories were entangled with one another, and my father had this problem also. What a beautiful woman Ms. Duvall was. While her death is sad to many, her suffering is over. God put a stop to her demons and removed her from the suffering they caused.
