Kris did look somewhat in awe of the others, who were much bigger stars in terms of being country performers. [Kris was also an occasional movie star, as well as a great songwriter.] Cash seemed to be enjoying himself and was very friendly with Waylon and Kris. For some reason, Willie seemed kind of aloof. He performed his parts, but he did not seem to be having fun with the whole Highwaymen concept.
I had tickets to see Johnny in 1998 but that was the tour he cut short due to illness and, to my knowledge, he never went back on the road. I got to see Possum (and saw everyone hooting and hollering for every part of the show ... except the three and a half minutes of "50,000 Names" when it was dead silent). I saw Merle and watched his backup singer get a bigger ovation than any backup singer ever when she sang "I Want To Be a Cowboy's Sweetheart." I happened to be hanging around in downtown Denver one evening when someone randomly handed a ticket to see Don Williams. I was so taken that I went to see him three more times on various tours. Don Williams occasionally complained about the altitude. Possum did too. And then there was Dolly, who at *cough* years old, performed in an outdoor amphitheater for three hours and never took her foot off the gas.
I'll say it again. There is NO DOUBT ABOUT THE HIGHWAY MEN !!! Today's country singers should emulate our past that brought them to their star stage. Grand Ole Opry only makes the "ageless songs and stars" that will forever be known!!!

Let's just appreciate both.

I can only think of the Highwaymen and the Rat Pack where a group of guys who were all celebrities in their own right could have fun and cut up and ad-lib on stage and still knock the audiences socks off.
