BG3 is my first ever CRPG and DnD game, and this has saved me a ton of confusion. I’m so glad the game makes the calculations for you for the most part lol
I instantly respected my Warlock in first lvl sorcerer because of Constitution Proficiency! Now all my concentration spells are basically unbreakable! THANKS SO MUCH for this Video man! You helped me alot !
roll a dice to aviod negative effect from for example poision hitting you benefits from respective stats, eg wisdom helps you pass wisdom saving throw.
For non DND players like a lot of us. The game should've either excluded showing any dice rolls OR show us ALL rolls so we can understand every action / consequence without having to wonder what happened
Found your video through Steam Fyi incase you wanted a lil data. =] Thanks I have never played a game like this before so this breakdown helps me out so much.
Thanks for comment. It is two songs I mix together that I got from a sound download site. The first one that opens in the video is a Stranger things knock off. The next one that comes in is a generic eighties sci-fi soundtrack I found. Sorry I can't be more helpful. I will rummage for the exact links if I can find them.
@@GamingExistence Thanks for the response! Yeah, the first one is the one I'm looking for, I would love it if you manage to find a link, it's fine if not.
Idk if its everyone or just my game but spell saving throws are bugged and have been for a while. The spell save DC isn't based on the casters spell casting ability but rather the saving throw ability. In the example you used with Shadowheart and the spell hold person, yes that's how it's supposed to work, and the bug doesn't affect her because hold person has a Wisdom save and Wisdom is her spell casting ability. The formula 8(base DC) + (Spellcasting ability bonus) + (proficiency bonus) displays correctly in game, but if you look at the numbers while actively using the spells they're incorrect. For example, in my game Gale has an INT of 18(+4) and a proficiency of +3. In his character screen the save DC's for his spells is displayed as 15 which is correct. But if he goes to cast fireball, which has a Dexterity saving throw, the game replaces Gale's INT stat with his DEX stat giving an actual spell save DC of 8(base DC) + 2(DEX of 14) + 3(proficiency) for a total of 13. He only gets the listed spell save DC if the spell he's casting requires an INT saving throw. This bug affects anyone that can cast a spell. It's really annoying and I've reported it months ago, but it still hasn't been fixed :( Screenshots of the bug from my game if anyone is interested. Also included a screenshot of Astarion hitting a critical attack on an attack roll of 2 imgur.com/a/JvAzZbu
Great video, very clear and helpful. One question though that still confuses me. In your video you can see it also on minute 3:13 on the left there the dialogue show a +10 to saving throws, but looking at the lines below these don't add up to 10 (where others mostly do). What am i missing here? Should i sum it or is something not showing what should be there (that makes it to 10) or should i regard each line there on its own, making it 17 in total? Many tx in advance
The first line is the total. I can only assume the Paladin aura that increases saving throws is bugged out here and displaying incorrect information. That's my best guess because those numbers are wrong. +5 proficiency can't be right for that low a level character. I think that was just a bad example I ended up using there with it bugged out.
@@GamingExistence tx for the quick response. Yeah, thats what it has to be i guess. I wouldnt say a bad example 😊, as you will see when you look into it more that there are more showing incorrect. Maybe there is something to deduct what is actually missing (and should show)....hmm
I checked my figures again and it is the bless that was causing the confusion for me. As im playing in real time (non combat) i guess every turn the 1d4 dice is rolled changing the bless number each time. This number on the line showing bless is showing the change, but the total on +X on saving throws is not. The latter is showing the middle number (or average round down) of bless in the total (which is 2 of the 1d4)
This was helpful, thank you. I get frustrated that my spells nearly always fail. Can you tell me if different spells are best used by different types of spell casters? For example if a cleric and a sorcerer and a wizard all cast hold person do they all have the same chance of success? I'm picking up all these scrolls and I'm not sure how to best distribute them between Shadowheart, Wyll and Gale. Thanks again..
I can't find the exact question to my answer. I've been looking at the Nature's Quarterstaff which has a built in ability called Fly Paper (Ensnare). It says "DC12 Strength Saveing Throw" Does that mean 12 is baked in and will not take modifiers? Or could it take your strength stat and proficiency into account? Additionally, if I used warlock pact weapon on it could/would it change that Strength DC to Charisma AND even if it changed it, would it display in tooltip?
I believe Smite damage doesn't scale with anything. It just deals its damage, but using higher spell slots you can deal a max of 5d8 using a 4th spell slot or higher when up casting. More Charisma will scale better with Aura of Protection, your maximum number of spell slots (the spells selected and able to be cast). Certain Paladin abilities such as Inquisitor's Might. Hope that helps.
I meant the spell smites like Wrathful Smite. Any idea? :/ I think it's CHA, but I'm not sure. For some reason, the game isn't showing me the DC of my actions correctly. For example - if I am to cast Blindness, which we all know has a CON save, when I hover over the DC in the tab it shows me 8 + Prof + CON score. I even reinstalled, but it's still the same. :(
So you're saying if I have 23 CON (+6) and Proficiency (+4) and warding bond to give resistance to everything, Any hit under 48 damage I will be guaranteed to pass the con save unless i get a critical 1...
This is a great video, but this game is too freaking complicated if you haven't grown up with DnD. Like you explained it perfectly, but I still can't wrap my brain around it, and I play EU4 and stuff for fun.
This is by far the best explanation of this mechanic on RUclips. Good job!

@@kubistonekso the game rolls the dice for you in the background but you just don’t see it. Is that what happens?
@@peruperu-jj8zs yes, same with advantage (rolls 2 dices instead of one and chooses bigger number) and disadvantage
