Hey from Australia, watching this brings back so many memories in the dental school!
I totally agree with you about learning the old school ways, but in the end this will make you a well diverse practitioner and appreciate what’s to come after graduating and practicing.

When you take an alginate impression, take a little of the material with your glove finger and and put it on the occlusial of the teeth so you can get a good impression of all the grooves. Then place the impression material in the mouth (or duplicate the model). The alignate has to be thick enough that you can turn it upside down and not run out of the tray (for better control of the material, and you can actually get a good impression of the vestibule). In the real world, we don't use red boxing wax. We just pour the impression and have the lab do the rest. But, as a dental student, you need to know every thing that happens in the lab so you can be a better informed dentist. I have met so many new dentist who don't even have a clue of what happens in the lab. Taking impressions will make or break you as a dentist. Yes digital impressions are here, but I have seen some digital impressions taken for implant cases that were not accurate. So I am not completely convinced that digital is the only way to go. Having the skills to take an excellent impression for crown/ bridge/ implants or dentures is dependents on how good of dentist you want to be. I always stride for myself to be the "best". I take pride of my skills, and after 30 years, I have seen some of my work come back 20-30 years later, and I still admire what I did in the early years of my career. If you can take a good impression, you will get a good result back form the lab. I always talk to my lab tech, and ask if they have any problems with my impressions, and they always say, "We never have to worry about your impressions doctor. They are always so clear and easy to work on." Once you are out, you should never take short cuts, and always remember what you were taught in school...it will keep you out of trouble. Never take a short cut. Make each step the best you can make it, so it doesn't haunt you later on in a future step. If you don't think it is right, fix it and redo it. A dentist is suppose to be a perfectionist. One of my patients said to me today, "I will always go to you Dave, because your are a perfectionist." Being a perfectionist should be part of all dentist's code of ethics.....it makes me sleep good at night knowing I did the best for each of my patients at today's work at the dental office.

Agreed about how important it is to take an excellent impression. If that isn’t right, then you’re wasting everyone’s time. Yours, the patient and the lab.

I’m a dental lab tech and we only use the boxing way if the dentist specifically asks for full borders. Otherwise we will just flip the poured impression onto a patty of slightly thicker stone then use the trimmer to clean up the edges before prepping and articulating! We also use a debubbler before pouring to get rid of bubbles on the teeth and tissue.
Also, wile 3D models are great for some things we en up making stone model dupes of most of the anyway and it’s good to know the annoying parts of lab work when you’re the one calling and advocating for your patients with the lab.

As a practice owner I would advise you to try and do some assisting or shadowing in a private practice ( if you are not already ). Ideally you should be exposed to digital scanning such as Trios, Cerec etc. You will always need traditional impressions and casts on the odd occasion but 3d printed models from scans are not only accurate and easily reproducible, but can be part of the patient's notes such that you can monitor wear, tooth movement, gingival recession etc. Prospective employers will love if you have had experience in this area. Keep up the posts, I wish my dental school experience was as positive as yours seems to be. All the best for this semester.

You guys have it easy... our alginate is pink and its fast setting, so within 1 minute of you mixing it up by the time you put it in the patients mouth or a duplicate cast it would be like 30% set already. Our teachers wanted us to learn the hardships first rather then the progress of getting difficult each time, no nope nope just throw it in there let them figure it out hardest difficulty level, even chuck norris would have trouble getting a proper impression

Hey Trevor! My name is Maya. I applied to college recently. I hope one day to go to dental school. But I’ve been having difficulty figuring out a major to best suit pre dental reqs and a major that acts as a back up just Incase I don’t get in to dental school. Any advice?

At my school, human bio covers all of the dental school pre-reqs if you do not want to have to take extra credits! Thats what I did and I'm also able to complete a minor within my 120 credits to graduate. I'll be applying for dental school this summer (:

@@thepapaya480 I'm currently applying to dental school. My advice is to take what you enjoy, because your GPA matters more than your major. I currently have a 3.75 in a Biology major, which is nice as it covers most of the pre-reqs. However, I know people who hate biology that took the major for the sake of covering the pre-reqs and didn't do so hot. So now they're at a disadvantage due to the heavy weight that a GPA carries. One of my closest friend just got into a dental school and he's a philosophy major. It may add extra work, but if you enjoy it, you'll find yourself putting in the extra effort. Just my two cents :)

Thanks so much!! I'll echo what Superkaboby said too. I think picking a major that you enjoy will help you excel in those classes and keep your GPA high because you actually enjoy the material you are learning. That's why I chose exercise science. I love sports and anatomy ha. The other replies aren't wrong either! Lots of bio and chemistry majors have almost all of the dental pre reqs built in which makes it really convenient. Good luck!
