I absolutely love this version of the song. Kate Bush is impossible to copy, so Paula made the part her own and did a wonderful job. When she sings "we're proud of who you are" I get choked up every time. I don't know why, but that line just hits me like a ton of bricks.
That line hits me hard too, especially now. I've been stuck inside still and friends have stopped keeping in touch so it's been difficult keeping positive lately. Just listening to lines like "you know it's never been easy" just kills me :'( but i'm glad cause it does give me hope, like everything's gonna be okay now
I know exactly what you mean about that line and I thinks it’s just Paula’s incredible voice and how pure it is as well as the delivery, sensational and I could watch this a 1000 times and still choke up at that line.
That gig is fantastic - whole concert is worth to watch. In Studio recording was made by Kate Bush. You need to see the video - it's one of the most beautiful in history
Have seen Peter Gabriel live four or five times and could experience a singer who could blow away a whole hall just with his voice alone. The one who plays the double violin is the son of Ravi Shankar, who is one of the best sitar players in the world and his daughter is Norah Jones. On drums Manu Katche', one of the best jazz drummers in the world and on bass Tony Levin, formerly of King Crimson. To have the privilege to play with Peter Gabriel is an honor even for world stars.
Interesting bit of info on Paula Cole: when she was asked to come on tour with Peter Gabriel (filling in for Sinead O'Connor who bowed out) she was totally unknown. Only within the music industry a slight buzz was building around some demo's she made and the recording contract she got through it. Gabriel heard some songs that were recorded for her yet to be released debut album, left a message on her answering machine upon which she flew straight to Germany and have just one rehearsal before her first gig. By the time of this recording she was truly settled and had a whole bunch of gigs under her belt. You should also check out the song Come Talk To Me from the Secret World Live recording because it also involves her and shows Peter Gabriel in a more theatrical setting.
Paula Cole's 2nd album is my joint first favourite album by a female singer songwriter. That was the first album of hers I bought, followed by her 1st Harbinger. I just love the whole of This Fire, but I stopped buying after Harbinger because its so different, and I would never have bought This Fire from it. I wonder if the first is just too female targeted as I know she is one of the artists associated with the Lilith Fair. Then again looking at the Wiki page, I have albums by quite a few of those artists and didn't have the same problem buying 2nd and 3rd albums from those artists.
Everything you said was correct except her having a bunch of gigs with him under her belt. This was filmed only 3-4 shows after her first gig. She was not settled in at all but still sounded that good.
The studio version of this track was a duet with Kate Bush. Great as Paula is, Kate is in a class of her own, with a warmer, more intimate delivery. Perhaps surprisingly, Dolly Parton was Peter's first choice for the track, but she turned it down. No disrespect to Dolly, but I think the right person got the job.
Apparently Dolly's management turned it down without letting her know about it - she found out later and was very upset that she missed the opportunity. I love Dolly, but I think things worked out for the best, Peter and Kate were a brilliant pairing!
This is a fantastic version of this song and Paula Cole knocks it out of the park and definitely holds her own against the ethereal original Kate Bush vocals. She grew up a few miles from me in Rockport, MA and she has a degree in jazz vocal performance from Berklee College of Music. I got to hang out with her for a little bit after a local show and she is a very cool and humble person.
I much prefer Paula to Kate Bush, who was in the original video. Thanks for reacting to this one. This whole concert is wonderful. I would highly recommend it to anyone
This song always, always, ALWAYS KILLS ME. This version is slightly less destructive to my composure than the studio recording with Kate Bush, but only slightly. And today, well, today u really needed to hear this song. Thank you for reminding me of it, when I needed its message so much.
Can't stop watching this reaction, beautiful stuff guys, Peter Gabriels microphone technique is superlative, should be must watch text book procedure for all wanna be singers!
Amazing song, amazing first major gig for Paula and a great collaboration with great talent: David Rhodes, Manu Katche, Tony Levin, Peter and Daniel Lanois. You can't get any better! Btw, Peter has a new album coming out this year, "i/o". This is supposedly his last full album. It's got Tony, Manu, David and Brian Eno! I've heard the first song "Panopticom" and it's really good!
Love this beautiful version- also the official video is amazing- They’re completely wrapped in each other’s arms, bear hug style- and they’re on a slowly spinning, small podium, singing each of their parts as they slowly spin around- VERY nice, unique beautiful video- 💖💙🤘🏼
Another great reaction. This performance was filmed in Modena, Italy. This whole show was a 'theatrical performance'. The main director was Canadian; Robert Lepage, of course working closely with Mr. Gabriel. Check out 'In your eyes' from the same tour.
This is such a beautiful emotive, poignant song and this version far outstrips the original, with Kate Bush no less, and had me mopping my eyes. After buying this DVD I fell headlong in love with Paula, like about a million other guys, and still do..
I don't remember the violinist's name... But he is supposedly a legend in tbe field. And if I heard right... he made that double-necked violin himself.
I heard and watched so many cover versions of this song and they were all terrible. For some time I thought that no one would be able to replace Kate but then I found this! Paula is the only one who is able to create a similar vibe and feeling like Kate did. Absolutely fantastic.
I know, i know this video is a year old, but the dude stops the dang song right when Paula is going to sing again to talk about how people used to bring lighters to the concerts. Really? That's the important commentary?

The “we’re proud of who you are” is one of most beautiful lines ever sung live by a human being I am not kidding..
i cry every time i hear this song.
I know exactly what you mean about that line and I thinks it’s just Paula’s incredible voice and how pure it is as well as the delivery, sensational and I could watch this a 1000 times and still choke up at that line.
I think Paula Cole is one of the most underrated female vocalists in music. The two of them together is epic.
That gig is fantastic - whole concert is worth to watch.
In Studio recording was made by Kate Bush. You need to see the video - it's one of the most beautiful in history
Peter Gabriel is my KING of music. Thank you guys for sharing.
Bravo! I'd also recommend Shaking The Tree and In Your Eyes from the same concert. Cheers.
This DVD of the Secret World gig shares first place in my heart with Pink Floyds Pulse show. Both Perfect from start to finish.
One of the most Peter Gabriel's beautiful songs...

the magic goes all to Peter Gabriel. He is the one ...
One of the greatest duets ever written and whilst the original was amazing this is a truly great performance.
Paula smashes it on this track.

Come talk to me is what had me hooked. Saw it live. Found a live cd by chance before the dvd was released. Life changing
Everything you said was correct except her having a bunch of gigs with him under her belt. This was filmed only 3-4 shows after her first gig. She was not settled in at all but still sounded that good.
@@steev11 You are right and I stand corrected.

☝👍
Agree - Kate is another level..Love Peter
I agree about Kate Bush. The original ruins me every time
Paula Is much better no question.
Apparently Dolly's management turned it down without letting her know about it - she found out later and was very upset that she missed the opportunity. I love Dolly, but I think things worked out for the best, Peter and Kate were a brilliant pairing!
Thank you, at last someone has reacted to this wonderful version. Paula's voice takes it to another level.
Paula has a wonderful voice, but for me this version lacks the necessary intimacy of the original studio version with Kate Bush.
Check out "In your eyes" from the same gig, i promise you will be impressed over Paulas vocals in that one!:)
"Your not allowed to bring fire into a building anymore" . After listening to the song, I think they just did ...
This is a fantastic version of this song and Paula Cole knocks it out of the park and definitely holds her own against the ethereal original Kate Bush vocals. Ok awesome..but the video where they cling together..no words
I would also recommend "Come Talk to Me" from this same concert. Peter and Paula's performance is stunning!
It's certainly a beautiful performance from beginning to end.
The best concert I've ever been to!
Yes, incredible show!
A great concert from beginning to end. And you have heard Peter Gabriel before singing lead for Genesis on The Knife.
I much prefer Paula to Kate Bush, who was in the original video. Thanks for reacting to this one. This whole concert is wonderful. I would highly recommend it to anyone
The entire "Secret World: Live" concert is breathtaking.
This song always, always, ALWAYS KILLS ME. This version is slightly less destructive to my composure than the studio recording with Kate Bush, but only slightly.
And today, well, today u really needed to hear this song. Thank you for reminding me of it, when I needed its message so much.
The entire Secret World Live DVD is absolutely sublime. Highly recommend checking it out
I have never been a fan of Kate Bush, although she has a lovely voice. But I think Paula Cole's soulful voice is so beautiful and so soothing
Can't stop watching this reaction, beautiful stuff guys, Peter Gabriels microphone technique is superlative, should be must watch text book procedure for all wanna be singers!
Always loved this song!
From this same tour check out the video for "In your eyes".... visually and musically incredible, you won't be disappointed
Amazing song, amazing first major gig for Paula and a great collaboration with great talent: David Rhodes, Manu Katche, Tony Levin, Peter and Daniel Lanois. You can't get any better!

"Solsbury Hill" is a great Peter Gabriel song 👍👍
Paula not only has a wonderful voice, no, in my opinion she is one of the 10 most beautiful women in the world.
Love this beautiful version- also the official video is amazing- They’re completely wrapped in each other’s arms, bear hug style- and they’re on a slowly spinning, small podium, singing each of their parts as they slowly spin around- VERY nice, unique beautiful video- 💖💙🤘🏼
I am always surprised that Paula never became a bigger name.
When Peter and Kate sang this they looked in love the video of it is a bit dated now of it, Paula did very well though.
This song was inspired by the dust bowl era where millions of people were displaced and looked for jobs!
So glad you reacted to one of my favorite live performances ever!! You should react to "In Your Eyes" from this same tour!! Absolutely amazing!!!
Another great reaction. This performance was filmed in Modena, Italy. This whole show was a 'theatrical performance'. The main director was Canadian; Robert Lepage, of course working closely with Mr. Gabriel. Check out 'In your eyes' from the same tour.
This song lifts me up when I'm feeling down.
One of the best love songs ever ! Great reaction guys !
his voice is an instrument 🎸🎷
No offence to Paula Cole, but this is Kate Bush’s song. She did the original and the video is n youtube too.
Great reaction guys, just had to watch it again...
The lights are a shell that covers them at the beginning of the concert
Great version, loved the original but love this as well.
This. Is. Amazing.
Sorry y’all…Love Kate Bush version but Paula early in her career to do this was unfreaknbelievable
This is such a beautiful emotive, poignant song and this version far outstrips the original, with Kate Bush no less, and had me mopping my eyes. After buying this DVD I fell headlong in love with Paula, like about a million other guys, and still do..
The music is too good for this pair!
Paula Cole is a great singer, but Kate Bush owns this song and nobody can top her in my opinion.
Paula toped her.
@@rx7dude2006 Nope!
Nice mix
Definitely have to recommend “In Your Eyes” and “Shaking the Tree” from the same show.
nice
I don't remember the violinist's name... But he is supposedly a legend in tbe field. And if I heard right... he made that double-necked violin himself.
Paula is ding the Kate Bush part and i must say...different but awesome.
I heard and watched so many cover versions of this song and they were all terrible. For some time I thought that no one would be able to replace Kate but then I found this! Paula is the only one who is able to create a similar vibe and feeling like Kate did. Absolutely fantastic.
Nothing can beat the Kate Bush version.
None can reach Kate´s voice
hi ! Who's up for P.Gabriel's Darkness ?
I always cry dammit!
It’s a violin and a viola
The original was with the awsome Kate Bush
I know, i know this video is a year old, but the dude stops the dang song right when Paula is going to sing again to talk about how people used to bring lighters to the concerts. Really? That's the important commentary?
Wow Suzie 👄
Peter with Kate.can't touch that version
That second verse is particularly poignant to us in the wildfire affected parts of the world this summer, 2024.
It's just not the same without Kate.
Kate was more passionate on vocals
Does not compare to Kate Bush version.
Kate who?
Paula is good but don’t have the feeling as Kate and per has
STOP pausing this everytime!
Kate Bush dose it much better .
