  • We begin fencing in our garden with welded wire on uneven terrain with a homemade fence stretcher. The garden fence must be deer proof and keep out all the little critters too. We're almost ready for 2022 garden season!

Drilling a bunch of Robertson deck screws through the boards holds it together.

Common 304 stainless steel bolts will typically have about 75,000 to 90,000 psi tensile strength. They are stronger than what are called grade 1 or grade 2 carbon steel bolts. Grade 1 and grade 2 carbon steel bolts have unmarked heads and the minimum tensile strength is 60,000 to 75,000 psi. What you want to use for applications like this are what are called grade 5 bolts. Grade 5 bolts have three radial hash marks on the bolt head. They have a minimum tensile strength of 120.000 psi. The next step up is grade 8 bolts. They are marked with six radial hash marks on the bolt head. They have a minimum tensile strength of 150,000 psi. Even the strongest carbon steel bolts - grade 8 - will be less expensive then stainless steel bolts. Stainless bolts cost 235% as much as grade 1/2 bolts, 170% as much as grade 5 bolts, and 126% as much as grade 8 bolts. Unless you need superior corrosion resistance, you are better off with carbon steel bolts rather than stainless steel bolts.
