Thank you, sir! I checked fuses and relays; all were good. After watching the video I “juggled around” the wiring boot, all my windows went up and the mirror switch worked again. Now I know what to look to repair! I appreciate you sharing your knowledge!
Hey there Tim. Today I changed the regulator and motor in my front left door. The vehicle being a 2001 Explorer. Never had trouble with the power windows besides the usual replacing of these common parts. Once I had the regulator in I went to adjust it to match up to the window in a nice open area where I could see and have room to connect the window. Low and behold when I pressed the window switch nothing happened. Nothing happened again and again with all the windows. I investigated all the probable causes to no avail. Angrily I went to my computer , opened RUclips, did a search and found this video of yours. Well Sir, seems I clicked in the right place. I went back to the cause of my frustration after watching this video and unbolted the cluster of wires going to my door. Pushed the rubber back and clamped it in place. There was the blue/black power wire in my face held together by the outer rubber only. Taking your advice, I cleaned the wires after skinning them back, prepped them and put a nice solder in place. Slid a section of marine grade shrink tubing over the solder and a second over the first and called it done. After many years this video with your knowledge and instruction is still valuable and very appreciated. I hope you're doing well and thank you for sharing your experiences!
Tim does great work and a truly honest and kind man. He has done work on my vehicles and taught me things to do my own work. He is one to be appreciated.
dude to take that panel off on the door just grab it from the front and pull back and up you don't need a tool. watch your videos all the time I think you're one of the best ones out there for Ford
U just saved me. I moved that boot around in the door hinge, not thinking I’d be that lucky, and…. I no longer have to worry about coming out to a wet ass in the morning!!! I have a 2000 explorer that I only need to last me a couple more weeks! 🙏🙏🥳🍻
O.K.... You are my go to mechanic for my Ford Explorer from now on. Great presentation. Very relaxed. Easy to follow. I love the do it right the first time approach. Thank you Tim
Just did this to my grandfathers explorer and saved him from the rip off artists at my local repair shop and it worked like a charm. All I did was crimp the wires together and fuse them with a hot air gun. Grandpa is very happy 😊
You would not believe how saturated the market is here for coffee shops and espresso stands. There is literally one on just about every corner. And I must admit. I visit them regularly.
Thank you so much for this video. My passenger window and right rear window stopped working for a while now and I couldn't figure out how. You explained everything so clearly and also the importance of a good quality repairing wire and the features of it. I never thought of that especially when you mentioned it maintaining flexibility in even cold weather. That crucial. It all makes sense and you're hilarious, especially with the fast food and non-working window dilemma lol. Awesome video doctor!
I pulled the switch box and discovered someone had connected a secondary ground wire by wrapping it around the black ground wire and tapping it over, and screwing it to the door frame. I had my voltmeter and was going to test the blue power line, so I turned the ignition key to power it, and suddenly the whole system was dead, nothing, no console lights, nothing. I blew something somewhere!
Why would anyone would give thumbs down this people dont need to do this videos but they do and help without youtube most of you wont be doing repairs in ur cars or house .. thanks for the video Mr Mechanic .. Bless
Nice job thanks, glad I seen this b4 replacing the window motor, I took the switch apart and cleaned out the carbon dust, now to find the broken wire. Nice solder job and hey. Nice shop! Keep up the goodness. John
Tim, you were correct. Three wires on 05 Explorer. Unfortunately I could not solder. I had to use butt connector. But it’s working now. Thank you very much!!!
Tools in the mail from a great channel, how cool is that? Explorers keep mechanics and techs busy that's for sure. Your repair will last longer than the vehicle. :)
Great video thanks for sharing. I hate power windows. lol. I just had a problem with mine. Thank God the car was under warranty. Good to see you again. Twenty thumbs up
Ah a thumbs down isn't always a bad thing. I don't believe that it means that the person didn't like him but perhaps didn't agree with the repair, the color of the trim tool set, the way he wears his hat, camera angle, ect... Sometimes it is for something silly. Ya he is a good guy and I wouldn't give him a thumbs down.....-John
I really want to do this repair on my own, but have questions...among other issues. I found a broken black wire (ground, correct) and a blue with black stripe (what's this?). What gauges are these wires as I would like to repair as you did. I really like your video but just don't have confidence in myself to get the job done right. 😞 Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Hey great job o learned a lot, this was honestly really amazing, one comment when soldering put solder pen on one side and solder on other side made sure the wires hear up enough to melt solder across. Makes in bold inside and out
So that's how you use those damn things. I fiddled around with mine for hours, but all the rest got in the way....Who knew they come out of that holder..LOL. Great video buddy. Glad to see you getting some use out of those things. all the best -John
I figured if I used a screwdriver to pry that switch off you would probably be giving me a hard time. Haha. Been using them lately. They work pretty good. Thanks a ton!
LOL oh ya you know I would have been yelling at you through the monitor..LOL I think they are ok for most trim. I like the idea that they are a hardened plastic and will be more gentle on plastic trim. Where as a metal one could gouge the plastic. all the best buddy -John
TY so much and you have a kind nature and voice. You make it look easy but.... I know Jack when it comes to working on cars😂 I was kept in the kitchen 😆This is what is wrong with my EXACT SAME CAR and now I have a video to show someone to check this problem.
Hi great info on why the windows don't work. Thank you. I have another issue with the power lock on the drivers door. When I close the door it automaticly locks the door. But if you pull on the inside door handle one or two times before shutting the door it will not automaticly lock the door. What could be causing this problem do you possibly know. Thanks in advance.
Thanks exactly what you describe after i bought switch was bout to do the motor.crazy thing was only one window was working pass back.other three nothing then i found black wire and green wire broken like video now just two rear work must be more broken wires.thanks
thank you for this video. A few questions since I am experiencing this problem now with our Ford Explorer 2000: a) wires look intact b) relay and fuse are good. I used a test light to check the switch and some areas have voltage, some do not. Any thoughts/suggestions?
I occasionally lose all power to the switch so none will work but if I open then close the door it has a tendency to work for awhile. As a note my locks work fine it's only the windows that are affected. I'll check the wires in the boot when it's not raining again. Thanks for the video, this should help me out.
Good call. Me too but I figured I could add a little drama and suspense for the production. The customer was super happy with the repair and cost. Thanks for visiting.
Thanks for the great video. I replaced the switch and took apart the boot to look for a broken wire. I found none. Maybe the wires slipped back into the door and into the engine area. How many wires should be going through the boot? Any other thoughts?
Hey thanks! Found 2 broken wires, and the ground wire broken but the insulation still covering the break. Had to feel it to find it. Think the blue/black wire was the same, but didn't want to cut it, so half-assed it by running wire (inline fuse too) straight to the battery. POS now AOK, gotta have my foo foos.
awesome you fix that wire exactly how I would have done it with the heat shrink and solder lot of people wouldn't go that way because it's too much work.
thanks for the video! cus of you i was able to fix my wimdow!! and $ave big. it was 200 dollars just to get this problem looked at anf i knew it was only 1 of 3 things! thanks alot!
I have a 2008 mercury mountaineer premier. Windows and locks not working including sunroof and back glass hatch. Also my park lights not going off. Any suggestions
Tim the unloaded power and ground checks at the switch come from the area you fixed ? The voltage check showing system voltage ? A ground from somewhere else ? I'm thinking the ground you fixed was holding on by a strand or just touching. Nice of my cousin John from THE PLOW GUYS to send you that trim kit. John is a very generous guy and does some fantastic vids on his youtube channel THE PLOW GUYS . Cheers buddy and keep making the great vids .
I saw him use a screw driver to remove a plastic rivet and he was poking and prying at it. So I thought this would make a great gift to your brother. Lets face tools are the best no matter what kind of tool it is....Your Brother is awesome. I guess your parents didn't have much to pass on to you after he was born eh? LOL love ya all -John
Actually brother Tim is ten years older than me but the Alaskan beer preserves your good looks. Tim was blessed with all the smarts in the family as you can see in every vid. Tims the first guy I call when I have a problem with my vehicles too bad he has caller ID and won't pick up the phone. Love both you guys XOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXO
I think it was back feeding ground through the switch somehow. I really don't know. If I would have used a test light it would have shown there was a problem but I was too lazy to go to my toolbox and get one and hook it up properly. Funny because I'm never too lazy to hit the fridge for another beer or pizza. Good thing it has preserved my good looks all these years.
I have a similar situation. The rear windows do not work but all of my fronts do. I am getting power from the master switch. Do you think it could be a ground in the same location that is not working the rear windows?
2002 Ford explorer. I repaired some wires in the boot. I got back my mirror and everything was working. Then after spraying wd 40 at the door ajar locks. Soon after that, I lost the window up and down. and the door lock stopped. Also, the radio and inside lights went out. My windows were stuck open. I ran a batter thin wire to the switch. And the windows all were working Until I removed the power. I am planning on cooking at the boot wires again. Do you have any ideas about the interior lights and the radio going out? I checked the fuses they are good.
Not sure if it was mentioned or asked and answered but What gauge was the wiring you used ? I’m having a similar problem with my passenger window. It was working at one point and then stopped out of nowhere recently. I checked the fuses and they’re all fine.
I have the same problem. Could a flickering door ajar light and door chime also be caused by this? To dome light has to be manually shut off when parked as well.
Hi Tim, good ta see ya. Good Info, that type of problem is sort of common even on other makes, I have had to do it on my chevy and gmc trucks. But mine are old trucks, 94 and 95, but everything I have is old just like me. Good video...Thanks
I think these Explorers had broken wires straight from the factory. Makes since for a twenty year old wire to break but I don't know about ten. Anyway it was another easy fix. Take care friend.
Thanks for the help, my 05 xlt had the same faliure in the same spot. This video saved me tons of hours of stress, and in -20 degree weather that's a big deal. But I wish you showed how to properly pull that switch panel, I broke both tabs.:( Anyway thanks so much, the wife is happy again.
Thank you, and just asking wouldn't it have been better to fish a wire from switch to break going to main part of vehicle rather than having to solder points?
If you're going to do a repair... always solder and increase the wire length so that the solder joints are inside the footwell kick plate and inside the door panel. These wires are notorious for breaking... better to have a non-soldered wire within the boot. Also... use the Best Wire you can buy... "arctic rated" for cold climes etc... stock wire breaks so improve the design
My master windows switch won’t work but only. For the front pass window is a f150. 2004. So I remove the master window switch I clean the wires I pull apart buttons and I send the small guys inside also I try from the door pass switch and won’t work as well what. You think is the problem ? Thanks is you give me some suggestions I will appreciate
I'm trying to reconnect the power to my 01 Ford explorer xlt the previous owner said the had forgot to reconnect it when they replaced the side mirrors but I'm stuck at getting the door pannel off and where I reconnect the power, can you ease help?
2000 mercury mountaineer and each door has an issue. Lol. Driver window just fell off of track in front area. Got it back up so rain come in. Can not unlock w key outside door the door knob doesn’t really go down and up. Ok that’s the FIRST door. I’ll wait to hear back before I start the other three. !!
Glad I found this. Thought I was going to have to remove the whole panel. Mine being the driver's side which is used easy more than the others, I'm thinking my problem may very well be in the hinge area. One question, did you need to make sure the switch is off before checking for continuity? I guess there is little risk ad long ad it is only the ground bring tested and the door regulator button is not pressed to complete the circuit. Does make me wonder what if there is a direct short. Thanks
My problem is in the hinge area. It was such an awkward place to work, I did not find which wire. Also did not get the boot back on. But evidently moving the wires around got it to working temporarily.
Okay so my four windows do not work, the rear window and roof top window do work and so do my side mirrors. the lock doors works only to lock but not to unlock. I popped the button control cover and could not find anything unusual. Did not use voltage tester etc as I don't really do any mechanical work per say and so don't have the tools. Any thoughts? Thanks
Anyone know what the harness part numbers for this fix? I have a 2005 Explorer XLT with too many broken wires and im done repairing them. TY in advance.
Great video. The best video so far (explaining how to fix the front left window) My questions are what is the thin red wire for? What is the thin blue wire for?
@@ThecardoctorTV , thanks for such a good video, your time and honesty and helping others, I think I got the same problem, it used to work by shouting the door only, now don't even do that, I did check the fuses and relays but nothing, I'll be checking on that henge, thanks to your video, may the Lord bless you with more wisdom, till next time,
I was wondering if you can help me with my problem. I have a ford explorer 2005 model ,and well my master window switch wont work . My lock switch does work, on the passeger side or the rear sides try they all so dont work .Can you help me
My 03 Explorer driver window was intermittent then stopped completely in the up position. All other windows are working. I would ignore it but cops generally approach driver window so I may go ahead and try to repair.
Mines a 2000 model eddie bauer and sometimes the windows work sometimes they don't none of the buttons work except on driver's side door and I need it to go down because I have no AC. And it has to go down to be able to drop off mail at p.o. and incase I get pulled over.
I have a 2004 Ford Explorer. I've had a similar issue and was able to fix. Years later, I still have the vehicle and am now having other issues that involve only the left hand side of the vehicle. Simply, the windows will not work on the drivers side, (front and rear). The mirror and locks work. Just the window won't roll down. Any ideas? Could you specify which wires go to what window?
Thank you, sir! I checked fuses and relays; all were good. After watching the video I “juggled around” the wiring boot, all my windows went up and the mirror switch worked again. Now I know what to look to repair! I appreciate you sharing your knowledge!

Would this be the problem if both passenger and driver doors not working
My master windows switch won’t work but only. For the front pass window is a f150. 2004. So I remove the master window switch I clean the wires I pull apart buttons and I send the small guys inside also I try from the door pass switch and won’t work as well what. You think is the problem ? Thanks is you give me some suggestions I will appreciate
Thank you. Great video with easy to understand instructions.
2007 ford explorer sport trac, all windows work from master switch but 3 passenger door switches do nothing, any ideas?
VERY helpful found out had the same problem thanks👍
I'm trying to reconnect the power to my 01 Ford explorer xlt the previous owner said the had forgot to reconnect it when they replaced the side mirrors but I'm stuck at getting the door pannel off and where I reconnect the power, can you ease help?
2000 mercury mountaineer and each door has an issue. Lol. Driver window just fell off of track in front area. Got it back up so rain come in. Can not unlock w key outside door the door knob doesn’t really go down and up. Ok that’s the FIRST door. I’ll wait to hear back before I start the other three. !!
Great, best trouble soothing and rectification ❤
Glad I found this. Thought I was going to have to remove the whole panel. Mine being the driver's side which is used easy more than the others, I'm thinking my problem may very well be in the hinge area.
One question, did you need to make sure the switch is off before checking for continuity? I guess there is little risk ad long ad it is only the ground bring tested and the door regulator button is not pressed to complete the circuit.
Does make me wonder what if there is a direct short.
Thanks
Probably best to leave the ignition off when testing unless your testing for power. Good luck
My problem is in the hinge area. It was such an awkward place to work, I did not find which wire. Also did not get the boot back on.
But evidently moving the wires around got it to working temporarily.
Thanks very much really helps me getting the ideas of how to work with it..
Thanks
Would it be that if you get in the back seat and those switches don't work either
Anyone know what the harness part numbers for this fix? I have a 2005 Explorer XLT with too many broken wires and im done repairing them. TY in advance.
Thank you very much for the video. It was very helpful. Now I just need to buy a test light.
Great video. The best video so far (explaining how to fix the front left window) My questions are what is the thin red wire for? What is the thin blue wire for?
NOOOOO, NOT THE RED WIRE. 😁
Was this affecting all of the windows; even from each individual door switch? Or did the others still work separately?
Im having this issue with my 04 Explorer I fixed the wire that was broken; could the fuse now be an issue still no power windows. HELP!🙁
thanks very much for your support. very good video.
This fixed my windows in an 03 Sport trac thanks
Is there a FUSE I could check first???
Great repair Tim and keep up the good work!
Will do sir. Thanks for visiting.
I put my hands up and yell, "my window won't open! May I open my door!?" Lol
Where is the wiring diagram you referred to early in the video?
Yep, that is exactly what was wrong. Broken wire in the boot. Complete pain to get to get access to fix.
Mines a 2000 model eddie bauer and sometimes the windows work sometimes they don't none of the buttons work except on driver's side door and I need it to go down because I have no AC. And it has to go down to be able to drop off mail at p.o. and incase I get pulled over.
did you ever have to replace #62 the power windows circut breaker alsi
I have a 99 explore windows work from drivers door but right front and both rear won't work at door itself what would cause this
I have a 2004 Ford Explorer.
I will check that out , I have a 2004 Ford explorer xlt
