The Final Love Never Dies Show in London

  • 11 years ago today, the first ever production of Love Never Dies closed in London. It ran for 18 months and was led by Ramin Karimloo and Sierra Boggess; this and the 25th anniversary arguably threw them into the Phantom/worldwide theatre spotlight.
Ramin stayed the entire run; Celia Graham was one of the original understudies and took over for Sierra when she departed in March 2011. Like Sierra, Celia had also played Christine in the original show; she was in the London production from 2002-03 and 2005-07. Ramin and Celia did play alongside one another in the original show in 2007 when she was sharing the role and he was a Phantom cover!
Also features David Thaxton as Raoul who went on to play the Phantom in London from 2018-19. And Liz Robertson who played Giry in the 25th.
The audience is obviously very enthusiastic and everyone gives a great show.
As a small note, I know Ramin and Sierra are always praised for their time in this show. And rightly so, as they have amazing chemistry. But over the years I have seen Celia get cast aside simply because "she can't possibly have the same chemistry with Ramin that Sierra does". And those people are right-- because she is her own actress with her own Christine. And Ramin works well with pretty much everyone he plays opposite, so there is no need to worry!

I was at this performance. IIRC there were two mid-show standing ovations (one for Karimloo, one for Graham), plus one before the show started when ALW took his seat.

“Till I Hear You Sing”1:48 😁 No hits that last note quite like Ramin.

I wasn't familiar with Celia Graham's work...she does a wonderful job. People forget that music theater isn't meant to be static...each performer brings something new & different to the role. After-all, if Cameron McIntosh hadn't been willing to take a chance on the (then) largely unknown Ramin Karimloo, we would have lost the chance to experience something unique, precious (and magnificent). I look forward to discovering more of Ms. Graham's work.

Heard different versions from Love never Dies now, but still I like the audio version on CD most. The story ist simply the best. It tells way better what's behind. Also the scene where the Phantom threatens Christine to take away her son is just ridiculous. Don't know why they inserted this. The original was perfect no need to alter!
Still Karimloo ist just outstanding. Best Phantom ever!

A remarkable musical of ALW, unfortunately underestimated. Will find its way to audience.

The Love Never Dies trivia on amazon prime said that it was improvised. Webber liked it go much he added it to the aussie version

My thoughts on Love Never Dies is the music in this musical is good but the story doesn’t make any sense, and by that I mean it doesn’t line up with what happened in The Phantom of the Opera. Well, Andrew Lloyd Webber has said this is really a stand alone/spiritual sequel.

Do you think Ramin told the conductor he would do that little bit of the title song or do you think it was spare of the moment while on stage? And the conductor was like Oop better add music there
Was the final performance the only time Ramin did that?assuming this was the evening one

Listening to the audios i have it seems like it was something added in for the final two shows, matinee and evening. Perhaps they also did it the final week but there’s no audio from that time. The last audio before the final two shows was taken about a month and a half before and it wasn’t done. I doubt it was something just off of Ramin’s head, but it does make me wonder if they had just thought of it and decided to add it in for the last two shows or if it was written for london and then stuck for future productions. Australia was running at the time and audios show that they also didn’t have the reprise until the filming at the latest, which was in September. It was added in there sometime between late July and mid-September. But I’m pretty sure that it would’ve been something Ramin and the actor playing Gustave rehearsed beforehand and the conductor knew about.

Would you be willing to share some of those audios? How many do you have lol
Wonder when Ramin came up with it cos I read somewhere it was webbers idea. It’s such a great addition. Do you wish they’d have waited to film it? Judging by a tutorial I seen it’s now exactly how Webber wanted it. Wonder why they filmed the Australian one so soon.
Also do you know if the music after Meg reminices about Christine during the transition from that seen to the “Christine disembarks” scene was in London?
I personally love the lyrics Ramin uses ending it it with once it is in you instead of love will continue that they use now. Sorry if I’m not making sense by the way haha

I’ve seen the report on tumblr and it said it’s Ramin and Weber’s idea since Weber was there during finale. It got positive reactions everyone was crying at the end so this reprise remained.

Sierra had left about 5 months prior to the final performance. Celia Graham took over for her; she is Christine here.
