- Some random pictures and videos of the recent trips with this great Car. People told me I was cracy when i told everyone that I'm going to offroad rig and overland my GL. I'm just half way there! But damn I love this car!

Hi all. So i have sold this car now🤦♂️😥 The best car I ever had . But on the bright side I have upgraded to a GLS 😎 So hopefully I can share some new videos of my new adventures in the new GLS in the future. same mods will be done to the new car and probably a continuation of where I stopped progress on the old one.
I can see that a lot of the questions are related to the wheels and tires on my old car. so here is the specs:
20"x10,5 ET 35 Vertini Dynasty Gunmetal. Tires are falken wildpeak 285/55-20 . I also used 20mm H&R spacer front and back:-)
I was really happy about the stans on this car.
Note ! This did not fit on my car !!! I had to modify the plastic front inner liner by heating it and remolding it . I also had to modify a part of the chassis to make it fit. But it looks really good and have worked perfectly for me .

Hey, great rig... Thinking about selling my Raptor and building something similar either GL or GLS... Can you confirm that 164 with Offroad Package has Center and Rear Difflock and 166 with Offroad Pack only has Center Limitedslip?

Yes this is awesome! This is what I want my GL to look like. Now I need to find a wrecked off road package to transfer over all the offroad goodies into mine, they are so rare! Love your rig!!

I have a 2010 X164 GL350CDI in the UK. It's been a fantastic car, if a little expensive on the maintenance but I consider that to be just the cost you have to pay to own such a capable car. I have the off-road package on mine, which includes centre and rear diff lockers, low range, height adjustable air suspension and underbody protection plates.
I love this car but it's done over 100K miles now, so I'm looking to buy a second car as my primary commuter but I will keep and modify the GL for long-distance touring. It has worn winter tyres on its 21" rims since I bought it some 5-ish years ago, and it took me to the Arctic Circle in Norway and Sweden two years ago with ease. On one day we covered about 400 miles on the snow and ice without touching the actual road surface once, and it was as surefooted as a goat.
I'd like to replace the wheels with 20" sized ones, so that I can fit some AT tyres instead. My next trip was going to be through Russia into the desert of Turkmenistan but current politics means I'll have to push that one to another year I guess. I think I will have to try and find some custom wheels because none exist with the correct dimensions (width/ET) and load rating. I can't go down to 19" wheels because I have the larger brakes on the front which might be just a fraction too much for 19" wheels. Shame in some ways because there are a lot of tyre options available for the 19" wheels.
I'm also looking at what it would take to fit a snorkel although I'm not yet sure what the 700mm depth limitation for the car is, whether it's the air intake or some low-mounted electronics. Anyone know?

great job, very inspiring..even in 2020 you can't find much info on GLs custom made projects. I was hoping to understand if the air suspension is a good long term reliable option when doing lots of off-roading - especially rock crawling. i am trying to find a car that can take me fast and secure on road and then can just be a good off-road performer. Thanks, any input will be welcomed guys!

great video and great mods ! Am interested in converting one into overland, but I won't have the use of the 3 middle seats. Did you remove them ? I think of putting my kid in the 3rd row and instal a pop up table and boxes in the middle inside. Any thoughts ?

@@kamrankp85 just an update, I bought one! I have the off road pack, I am going to fit spacers, have you got any advice on how the airmatic will react? I think it will begin trying to lower the car because the resting height is higher, and the studs look short, so maybe 10-15mm lift on spacers max

Hi - I like that you’re off-roading a GL450, but in all actuality they’re fairly capable. I have one with the off-road package and will be doing the same to it, minus the huge wheels.
What type is your roof rack and awning?
Hi:-) it's capable;-) people just don't off-road them (i have a 320 cdi) . The wheels help a lot. I have a Thule roof rack and a 190x200 rooftop tent by a Norwegian supplier (China made). Same with the awning. I'm building a custom roof rack for my car:-) The car will be lifted with 35,s, front and back mounted warn winch and a shit load of lights. Go for it;-) you will never look back. good luck

Jeg leter etter en rack som ikke stikker alt for langt opp over takhøyde, med tanke på at jeg skal ha reservehjul, bergeverktøy og jerrykanner oppå. Har du noen detaljbilder du kan dele?

Jeg bruker kunn vanlig Thule takstativ. Altså bare 2stk wingbar fra Thule på 110cm. Taktelte dekker hele taket når det er i bruk. Hvis du skal kjøpe safari rack, så har frontrunner et som er tilpasset gl. Jeg skal demontere de tak skinnene å sveise superduplex stativ å skru det ned i taket.Hva gjelder markise, så vet jeg ikke hva det merke er. Kjøpte det av en fyr som solgte meg telt å markise under navnet norwegiancamper.no. Men dette er samme greiene alle selger (kina). Jeg er stor fornøyd med oppsettet.

Hi, I agree, they are very capable. I bought a GLS last year in April and I'm very impressed with it. I've also taken it a bit off road but I'm planning for a tour in SIberia next year. Can I ask what kind of alloys you have ? It's a bit hard to find the correct alloys for them as they need to be load rated and most alloys don't go for this high weight. Also can you tell me what tyres you have on it as well ? I was planning to go for Cooper Discoverer 285 / 50 / 20. Thanks, and please post more videos if you have :)
hi:-) sorry for late reply . The load rating is an issue if you whant it correct . mine have a load rating of 900kg PR wheel.No issue when you run high profile tires. if you modify slightly in the front you can do 285 55 20. The CT of your wheels is also critical for rubbing innate front . i believe mine are ct35. i will double check if you need me to ( just let me know). God luck:-)

Hi :-) I'm running 285 55 20 falken wildpeak a/t . You have to modify your wheel base in the front. Cutting and welding steel and modify the plastic protection over the wheels. It will rub if you dont.I'm in the process of modifying my suspension to move up to 35" tires :-)

Hi:-) The plan is to 1: lift the car 2.5-3 " with custom spacers between chassis and airmatic suspension.2: custom links for airmatic sensors to trim the air volume in the suspension to keep oem level. this will keep the ride smooth and not hard as when you lift only on air.3 some suspension adjustment, such as longer brake lines, adjust camber/caster and modify links if need be. 4 : customer made wheel wheel inner liners and some chassis modification to get bigger clearances for wheels.5 new spacers and machine hubs and brakes to get away fro 5x112 bolt pattern. last I need to modify and get bigger fender flares. so big project that is in the planning stage . not for every one as nothing exist for this car. :-) Progress for my part is slow these days do to general time constraints. inhave purchased a lot of the material needed and designed the spacers but I'm also considering changing out the gl with the new ( same x164) bigger engine car before I do the build. With this amount of work and money that needs to go down in this car. I'm never going to sell it;-)

Can't beat the riding comfort 🙂Its the best!! I changed all of the suspension when building up this car;-) So no problem for me.

Hello! Nice rig! I have a 2008 GL320 In Australia i am using off road! what size wheel spacers did you use to fit the 285 50s? i have ordered some 30mm spacers hoping to put 275 65 20s on! What has been your favorite modification ? cheers!
Awesome, so do I! You can use the ML63 20"s and fit 285 55 muddies without spacers. Which spacers did you order? I want to fit spacers, there is not much thread on the strut left, to me it looks like no more than 10-15mm without modifying the studs to fit the spacers but I am worried about how the airmatic will react to the higher ride height.
@@Mcmerc01 I am going to try fit 275 65 20s on my ML63 rims! But becasue of the extra profile height I think I will need the 30mm spacers. I ordered German made ones as I did not want to run China spacers. You can order air bag "lowering" kits off eBay and use them to trick the sensor to adjust the hight. Cheers !
@@spring6meow Thanks man! I will try and find the spacers on ebay and order them in. I enquired on the lowering links but was told they wouldn't know if it would work, so hearing this is good news. You might need to extend your brake lines too, when fully extended and articulated they're getting close to fully stretched I think
Managed to get 275 65 20" AT tyres under with a little lift with the suspension links and 30mm spacers. The inner guards have to be modified to allow it to fit. I think your 285 55 20 choice is much more sensible lol

Ugly GL the 2013-2019 were the most beautiful mercedes..
