IMO it's what Enjolras is supposed to act like in the book. Enjolras is stern and still in the book and I can imagine him speaking with a plain stern look and no active expression at all. Mr. Warlow clearly read the book and I think he was trying to be faithful to that, as he stated in some interview. If you don't buy his interpretation, it's fine. Each one to their own. But I found I liked his Enjolras more after I had seen him in this video.
I just love him!! His voice is obviously stunning, but what impresses me the most is his confidence to do "nothing" (unlike the actor who sings Marius..), but just be committed to the moment, be still and so truthful .. A MASTERCLASS!
He is the only true Enjorlas! He has a powerful commanding voice yet does not sound like a condescending ass or a pre pubescent teen. However might I add that these student (who are supposed to be about 20) look like old men, and the Marius well if I don't have anything nice to say I won't say it.
I totally fell in love with this voice when I first heard it on the Les Mis recording. It's been sometime more than a decade and I still appreciate his voice very much. It's not just a pretty baritone voice but I love his way of delivering emotion. How brilliant it is now that people from other continents get to see these clips on the internet!
I really like Warlow! He reminds me of Michael McGuire who is my favorite. They really captured the fanatical revolutionary. Some of these more modern Enjolras seems sort of passive or blase to me. I prefer the old angry kind.
Oh my life. I thought you couldn't get better than Thaxton as Enjolras... how I've never watched Warlow in the role before, I don't know, but I've found the true one.
One of the greatest male singers alive today and that is not an over exaggeration. The man is a gift! Being here in the states I have worked very hard to get my hands on everything Anthony has ever released so this is a gem to see. Thank you for this! He is a talent that deserves to be seen
I first watched this musical when I was a little kid, and Enjolras made a huge impression on the way I think. He was the first example I ever saw of a truly selfless and idealistic hero; to this day, there's a voice in the back of my head that says "our little lives don't count at all" whenever I'm acting pettily. :P
Anthony Warlow has one of the most expressive voices in the contemporary music theatre IMO. He said his way of playing Enjolras was to be still and commanding. That might account for the fact that he doesn't show off the expression much in the beginning, but it's perfectly in accord with the description of the character written in the novel.
3:48 is a great bit of acting. He starts the line angry and then midway though seems to remember that Marius is his friend and very young, and softens his delivery mid-sentence.
*bursts out laughing* HE HAS HAIR! Oh man, I cannot get use to seeing Mr Warlow with hair... Anyway... This man is... I don't have an adjective cool enough. I love him so so much. He is the God of Australian musical theatre. I'd kill to see him do Enjy live, It would have been awesome.
Warlow is one of the greatest singers to grace musical theatre, imo. I loved his voice so much when I grew up listening to this cast album. It's just so stunning.
i feel like in this performance you can really feel the energy and optimism all of them have for the revolution. it's something i find - weirdly - missing in most renditions of this song, but it's done so well here
Sorry, never heard of AW before, untill I saw him doing a great and funny performance in "Patience". It brought me to this video. This is absolutely stunning, 1:55 - 2:55, this mans voice is so powerfull. What a great singer he is, from now on one of my favourites. Thanks for shearing. Gr., Y. from Holland.
Staged for TV I think a lot of the performers lost something, or perhaps the nerves took over. Peter Cousins (Marius) was much better on stage than here, but he played the love sick puppy part well. Anthony Warlow always made me want to leap from my seat and join him on the barricades to die. I've not seen or heard his Enjolras surpassed, and sadly in the movie they neutered the character, I suspect to give more focus to Marius.
This is incredible. I remember listening to the OBCR and hearing Enjolras's songs, and thinking about how the guy vaguely sounded like Warlow, and how I'd love to hear Warlow sing this role. And now here it is! I want to lick this man's vocal cords. He is just that good.
I like Anthony very much, I'm so glad he was in the Complete Symphonic Recording and he's amazing. But in my heart Michael Maguire will always be Enjolras.
Anthony Warlow is fucking perfect and whoever this guy playing Marius is just too doe-eyed or something. Warlow deserves better, like Michael Ball or something. Or maybe he should do both parts!
I was basing my assumption off of his work on the complete symphonic recording, and he does sound a little tired (only a very, very small amount) leading up to that E-natural. If he normally did opt for the lower note, perhaps it was because it was early on in his career and he didn't feel completely confident in his upper-register? That wouldn't make entire sense, however, because of his origin in the world of opera and advanced voice. Regardless, he sang that E very well! Haha.
What would be better, singing a note which you aren't that comfortable with or using a note in the same chord, which also works, and is even stronger? No brainer... Warlow is a fantastic artist, just a slight change which suited him better. His voice is just pure and awesome
Wish they'd bring some of these classics back to Australia again - I've got time to go now with my babies grown up..... Peter Cousins - great voice too
He is on Broadway now in ANNIE...I was lucky enough to interview him on opening night (if interested, check out my page on RUclips). What a nice, talented man!
Hehe, very funny. Actually a friend of mine once said she thought Peter Cousens looked and sounded quite like Michael Ball. Well, it turned out many agreed with her. If you search Peter Cousens through the net you'll find his website and pictures with him and Anthony in Les mis. And a research into Michael Ball's website shows he never performed Marius in Australia, though he is the Marius on the complete symphonic recording with Anthony as Enjolras.
Aaron Lazar is amazing, and Michael Maguire once was pretty good, but Anthony Warlow is unique and great in his own way. How many real deep dark and powerful baritone Enjolras' can you get? Plus have you ever heard Complete Symphonic Recording? He certainly has no problem in high notes. He has even higher notes in other shows. I'd guess his choice of low note is to keep still as a calm leader.
That's a matter of preference. I personally prefer a classical Enjolras rather than a pop-styled one. As for his tend-to-be-cold performance, I find his approach quite faithful to the character of the novel, though I have no problem with actors who play it like a more warm and inspiring leader.
WOW,that's terrific! Nice to meet a cast member here on youtube here. But I must say you had rather strange makeup and wigs from a updated view now, or it's just because the closeup made the makeup looked all exaggerated. And I figure all the singers didn't change costumes as they did on stage?
@LegsandJump Also, these comments were from months ago when we first talked, I've not even commented on Les Mis videos or any videos for awhile as work is busy and it's summer... computers and summer don't mix :P
It's not. This is the Sydney cast, 1989 Australia Day concert. Marius is Peter Cousens. And a bit of trivia, Grantaire was the husband of Debbie Byrne, who was the Australian Fantine and also Fantine on the International Cast Recording.
My thoughts on the G#/Ab at the end: E is the tonic of the chord, which is always the strongest note of any chord. The G# is the third, the weakest of any chord. However, the orchestration puts a strong emphasis on the G#, leading us to F major for "People Sing." I think it was a poor discision by the music director to have Anthony sing the E rather than having him take the G#. We all know he can sing beautifully and powerfully well above that!
didnt know the students in the 1800's had mullets and receeding hairlines :| BUT mr warlow. u r amazing. u make me proud to be an aussie male singer :D
Which production is this? I really like Warlow's performance. (First time I've seen/heard him.) But the other students look way too old. And this is definitely not my favorite Marius. Yikes.
@peskytresky Actually I'm not. However I was just referring to the interpretation of that line. I love how Ramin actually points downwards to match to the line. Personally I love the power in Anthony's singing ( though I also love also Michael Maguire and Ramin too)
No doubt indeed! Warlow we need you to do something AWESOME! I hear rumor that he will play Jekyll & Hyde in the film version! MERELY RUMOR! (i hope it's true)
IMO it's what Enjolras is supposed to act like in the book. Enjolras is stern and still in the book and I can imagine him speaking with a plain stern look and no active expression at all. But I found I liked his Enjolras more after I had seen him in this video.
Warlow was internationally regarded as the best Enjolras
which is probably why he ended up on the Complete Symphonic Recording (Hard to believe that album is 30 years old this year)
@disneydanny2 by that logic it's a wonder Gary Morris ended up on the recording
He has to be! He is remarkable.
Still is
I just love him!!
Anthony Warlow has such an effortless voice. His version of Jekyll and Hyde is freaking AMAZING.
And I thought Grease had suspiciously old students.

My very first Enjolras. Truly glorious. What an event this was. One of the greatest nights in Australian theatre history. ❤❤
3:48 is a great bit of acting. He starts the line angry and then midway though seems to remember that Marius is his friend and very young, and softens his delivery mid-sentence.
Wow. I didn't know footage existed of him live in the role. He is the best Enjolras ever!
Thank you for putting up an amazing piece of australian musical theatre history. i was 9 when i saw it in Melbourne and ive never forgotten it.
He played Enjolras in Australia during 1987 - 1990. This video was recorded in 1989.

He is indeed,I am a singer/actor and look to Anthony Warlow as inspiration and example in the Musical theatre field.
Haha, quick save at 3:22
Anthony Warlow = legend.
Anthony, yes, he is the GOD of the musical theater, he's the perfect Enjolars. Marius here made me laugh lol
Scary how these guys got cast, anthony warlow can sing the phone book
I like Anthony very much, I'm so glad he was in the Complete Symphonic Recording and he's amazing. But in my heart Michael Maguire will always be Enjolras.
ROFL can't get over the trumpet at 5:16. Warlow is like 'What am I doing in this show...'
ilseburnley that was a French Horn! :)
Warlow is the BEST at EVERY character he performs!! xx
Anthony Warlow is fucking perfect and whoever this guy playing Marius is just too doe-eyed or something. Warlow deserves better, like Michael Ball or something. Or maybe he should do both parts!
They're both on the Complete Symphonic Recording, if you Like.
Anthony Warlow ❤️ This performance, this VOICE, shows how amazing it is to be alive! Michael Ball is my favourite Marius though 😉
I was basing my assumption off of his work on the complete symphonic recording, and he does sound a little tired (only a very, very small amount) leading up to that E-natural.

Regardless, he sang that E very well! Haha.
For all of the little problems I see here, Anthony Warlow is still the definition of vocal perfection...
But most importantly I love love LOVE this show!!! Thanks so much for posting this!!
I love his acting, he's using his voice to convey his thoughts and feelings more than his acting (which he's acting in a realistic way).
What would be better, singing a note which you aren't that comfortable with or using a note in the same chord, which also works, and is even stronger? No brainer... Warlow is a fantastic artist, just a slight change which suited him better. His voice is just pure and awesome
Whoo, thankyou sooo much for posting these!
Cut off here in the UK I've only just discovered Warlow! Now I'm downloading everything I can find. Superb, powerful emotive delivery.
A W is so watchable, talented and beautiful, very best wishes
I'd love to see Anthony do Enjolras's part in One Day More
ruclips.net/video/ap6vNxnHrgQ/видео.html
Extraordinary singing. Next level
Peter Cousins. Looking back some 20 odd years later, I cannot believe the massive crush I had on him in the late 80's early 90's hahaha
And he does that note in the Complete Symphonic Recording, so maybe he was sick this day or something.
Beauty! Loving Anthony Warlow's performance. Also love how he looks here, wig and all. :-D
Anthony Warlow is so superb.
anyone else have a sudden craving for a ham and cheese sandwich after witnessing that Marius's performance?
The 6 vote for no is onbelieveble. Les Mis is a fantastic musical, and Warlow and his friends did a great job.
definitely my favourite enjolras
love his Enjolras!!!
WOW!!! I would love to see ALL of this production!
True. Anthony Warlow is incredibly awesome.
Beauty! Loving Anthony Warlow's performance. And he's very handsome here, wig and all. :-D
What a tank of a voice! :) Fantastic!
These are the oldest students I've ever seen
Anthony Warlow is the best male on the musical scene ever. Love him! :)

I love this man!
Anthony you will always be the best, Les Mis, Secret Garden, or My Fair Lady love you always, miss pasties 😁
That's a matter of preference. I personally prefer a classical Enjolras rather than a pop-styled one. As for his tend-to-be-cold performance, I find his approach quite faithful to the character of the novel, though I have no problem with actors who play it like a more warm and inspiring leader.
I saw this in 1988 in Sydney. Simon Burke was playing Marius.
I think Anthony Warlow is probably the best singer in the world
Best Enjolras I've ever heard!
Anthony's hair makes me giggle.
I love warlow, but he looks like elvis haha
Anthony has a new website and facebook page!!! Go to facebook and type in Anthony Warlow Online :D
WOW,that's terrific! Nice to meet a cast member here on youtube here. But I must say you had rather strange makeup and wigs from a updated view now, or it's just because the closeup made the makeup looked all exaggerated. And I figure all the singers didn't change costumes as they did on stage?
anthony warlow totally owns this video
O.M.G. ANTHONY WARLOW IS A MUSICAL THEATRE GOD!! I used to be a big fan of Maguire. Then I looked up who sang Enjolras on the CSR. I
i feel like the whole time anthony's singing he's thinking "i'm enjolras, bitch."
He's not Javert because Philip Quast pwns that role. :P
@LegsandJump Also, these comments were from months ago when we first talked, I've not even commented on Les Mis videos or any videos for awhile as work is busy and it's summer... computers and summer don't mix :P

aww man that was the best! do you have any more of Anthony in Les miserables?
hahaha at 3:22 that guy forgot to come in with "Red!" and the guy next to him is sooo pissed off lol
The singing is great but this video is making me laugh so much XDXD
Warlow is a genius... He puts emotions in every single note. Best Enjolras ever... Rest of the crew is quite disappointing!
He just looks so done with it lol
My thoughts on the G#/Ab at the end: E is the tonic of the chord, which is always the strongest note of any chord. The G# is the third, the weakest of any chord. With the exception of Anthony Warlow this is kinda like a high school production.
The God!
unbelieveable...how dare u ppl look down on peter cousens....
He is currently on broadway in Annie.
Both Philip Quast and Anthony warlow were doing The Secret Garden at the time. Only one of them was allowed to do it.
didnt know the students in the 1800's had mullets and receeding hairlines :|
BUT mr warlow. u r amazing. u make me proud to be an aussie male singer :D
Which production is this? I really like Warlow's performance. (First time I've seen/heard him.) But the other students look way too old. And this is definitely not my favorite Marius. Yikes.
1989 Australia Day concert. Sydney.
@AllOverAussie Is the Australian Day concert. Not a regular show.
@peskytresky
Actually I'm not. However I was just referring to the interpretation of that line. I love how Ramin actually points downwards to match to the line. Personally I love the power in Anthony's singing ( though I also love also Michael Maguire and Ramin too)
The Marius is Peter Cousens, and the year is 1989.
THE BEST ENJOLRAS EVER!!!!!!!!!!
No doubt indeed! Warlow we need you to do something AWESOME! I hear rumor that he will play Jekyll & Hyde in the film version! MERELY RUMOR! (i hope it's true)
Yea, you're right.
According to the lines it is Feuilly wearing the glasses - and he was not even a student.
jib out...its called artistic liberty...must everyone do it the same...Anthony Warlow is God! Never question him
YOUR HAIR! YOUR BEARD! LMAO!
