Shanghai has always had the cyberpunk aesthetic. Underground culture really has to stay underground. It can't be exploited and commercialized and watered down.
Daniel Tynan How do you explore the underground scene? I've been to Shanghai twice but it seems almost jaded to me. Maybe it'd be a breath of fresh air in my journey next time I visit.
Siodenesse L. The key is to keep meeting people as much as you can. And eventually it'll work out. Of course it should be people right places, not like saying hi to everyone in the metro. Lol
Squall Leonhart nothing harmful for using VPN, the only issue might be just paying monthly fee for a stable VPN service. China has the internet great wall, but there are no law for punishing people for using VPN.
been living in shanghai for 5 months now and if you go to the right places a few times you quickly start to recognise the same faces. its tight knit yet paradoxically very open
"i don't know if i can really talk about the government, it's very sensitive, bro the government easily gets your information, you know" (throws a gang sign) *gang gang*
When the girl talked about working with people from Brussels I felt so proud because I am from Brussels too and I visited Shanghai this summer and I could really sense the impact of the youth on fashion and the creativity and I just fell in love with the city, now I just wanna go back and meet people and maybe even go to those parties!
I feel like kculture is just a clean version of their duvet punk aesthetic. So much potential being ruined by the government. They don’t want progress, like imagine how lit their music industry would be if they didn’t restrict this stuff.
Uhh maybe don’t try to talk about the Chinese government if your only understanding of it comes from this video and western media reports. China is a rising economic power and lifted hundreds of millions of people out of power, imagine thinking they don’t want progress lmao.
can we have these underground parties and this kind of people in my country please, they look dope and mad talented, open minded people thats pretty cool
you literally have underground scenes everywhere the thing is: don't expect it to be like shanghai's or any other one. they all are different and fun to explore you just need to find the right people!! hahah
I've lived in Shanghai for the 14 years. It's extremely easy to bypass the firewall. Either get a free VPN and make do with a slow connection or purchase a VPN and use that. I have a subscription to one VPN provider (the one she is using at 3:29) for over two years now and have had very few issues even though the price is $100 a year. All in all it should take around 5 minutes to "break through the great firewall"
sorry girl I may make you feel bit down but yes Apple store or other major app stores have already removed. Thus all VPN apps are based in other countries lol that’s still illegal girl. you haven’t been suspended is cause you are lucky enough for this scenario
Ask Chinese people on the low whether they know about the Tiananmen Square massacre and tell me that the government hasn't been wildly successful in their censorship.
Sometimes I think America is stuck with the same way of doing things for so long that it has become very stale. Our music is becoming more or less the same. Where in many other places in the world are drawing from our western influence and turning it into something fresh and new again. I have high hopes for not just Shanghai, but many places in the new youth of China.
i think its different for us whos not chinese citizen and raised there. I've spen almost 10 years in china and love its culture. But i have no idea how hard would it be if I felt like government is watching my ass 24/7 and blocking every single things. We can't judge them because we dont truly know how it is like being chinese citizen in china mate.
This energy is something so precious these people have. Since I grew up in a quiet open minded European country I never really thought about how other people are doing at the end of the world. Especially when it comes to the underground mentality. Im happy they have each other and can't wait for the well-desevered exposure they will most likely encounter in the future.
Love these videos! Really shows the revolutinary side of this chinese generation that is often ignored or unknown! I live in Beijing and agree with what they say, its quite a sad city and everyone is just trying to live with that, looking for their confort zone.
These kind of videos are the reason y I subscribed to this channel. I think people in other countries express themselves more than the Dutchies do, just like in general. We do have creative/weird people here but not enough and there's not really a creative community in my town :-(
dit is zo waar, ik doe zelf dan een creatieve opleiding en dacht "iedereen is waarschijnlijk anders" . maar helaas is het Nederland en kleed 80% van de bevolking het zelfde.
Same goes for Germany actually, except for Berlin. Berlin is completely different from the rest of the country. I feel like the German people focus so much on being as "normal" as possible and behave like everyone else.
this is what i've been looking for forever! every time i go back to shanghai i see it evolve a little more and the underground arts scene a little bigger, would love to see all this with my own eyes one day
I have huge respect for Chinese culture and their art. They have great artists in China too. Like Zhang Yixing, Kris Wu, Luhan, Cai Xukun(he is also leader of Nine Percent Chinese boyband who got formed in Idol Producer), Jackson Wang, Hangeng etc... I like how these awesome people are breaking the boundaries and make their own special way to create art fashion and how they dare to express themselves. They are so unique and amazing. 💞🙏💪
I am using VPN to get through the GFW (it is not illegal and not so difficult). But personally I think GFW (with some loopholes) is necessary for a concentrated effort to pursue economic and social development for China at current stage.
It‘s not a problem for us to get an access to the blocked sites. The problem is that our ideas on education are still superficial: most of us know 'what it is', but don't know 'why it's like this' or 'how should we deal with it'. The Government is scared of somthing while ignoring the cause of it.
true.what fascinates me is how they bred a nation that doesnt even want to ask those questions,Thats quite an achievement i must say.Except for the few kids in this new era ofcourse, they r curious.
These type of videos are so dope and give me a lil inside on what’s happening in other people’s sort of aesthetic, ya know , it sparks something in me to open creativity in my life so I can create something and make what I love like others , from fashion to art to just anything artistic, these types of videos are what make me want to lear more and explore the world and it’s life but the kid our youth is living
Crazy to think that vk was much more mainstream back in the day but nowadays a lot of them just stay underground. Hip hop is rising. Would love to see i-D video about VK too
[SEA]S - South-East Asian Squad Yes it would be so interesting! Especially for an international fan like me, cause it's hard to know more about vk when there isn't that many info on the Internet about it.
3:43 i wish i could get them out of there so they could create and exist freely, but they compose of the chinese underground scene. it wouldn’t be what it is without creatives like this and they will bring a new wave of something spectacular
Its sad honestly because they are trying to live in a reality that will not last...What will happen after 5-10 years when they turn older and society no longer wants them and their own realities fade away...

schuuichiminamino idk about your friend but I used to study in china and all my classmates had access to everything since around 8 yrs ago so maybe it’s just your friend??
I thought this video is about some people who is oppresed or silenced by government in china because something they are doing. because a lot of East Asian youth have no idea about what things really are, they just see it think its cool then copy it. Like the Chinese trap music, they don't live that style, they ain't grow up in ghettos, but they see videos and think its cool and copy it.
I experienced that chinese teens are very open minded inside, but their curiosity was killed by the government and parents. Although I don't want to say that the government is bad, a little bit of the chinese conservativeness is slowly changing into a more liberal thinking. The government will have to understand those trends in ways of thinking and take their chance to accompany this change by adapting slowly.
Shanghai has always had the cyberpunk aesthetic. Underground culture really has to stay underground. It can't be exploited and commercialized and watered down.
While I generally second your thought, wouldn't you say that there are also contrary examples, like the techno-scene in europe?
Daniel Tynan How do you explore the underground scene? I've been to Shanghai twice but it seems almost jaded to me. Maybe it'd be a breath of fresh air in my journey next time I visit.
Siodenesse L. The key is to keep meeting people as much as you can. And eventually it'll work out.

Geheni Djiddi haha okay thanks
Daniel Tynan yep, underground is the only place to get raw authentic talent
currently using VPN to watch this video lmao
so badass
Lol
What do you risk when using VPN?
Squall Leonhart
nothing harmful for using VPN, the only issue might be just paying monthly fee for a stable VPN service. China has the internet great wall, but there are no law for punishing people for using VPN.
legal to use, but Illegal to create/share one without a government issued licence, and you know how many licences they issue each year
Shanghai looks cyberpunk af

K-culture? this is China we're talking about.
CHIM Kook K CULTURE? see this is why you can’t take any kpop fan to any other part of Asia. Casual racism.

Lmao most VPN companies are in unrestricted countries that make it hard for any lawsuits etc to be filed D stands for Dumb right Dan?

I think I shouldn't be this surprised that a lot of these people speak excellent, even flawless English. Amazing culture. So much respect.
Just download a vpn when on an overseas trip or something, its actually quiet easy to access youtube and stuff in china
beautiful and inspiring. ID you are wonderful!
It's so easy to download a vpn, the real barrier is language.
The girl with the purpley pink hair, her accent is so cool, she's definitely watched a lot of movies/TV from the UK
The younger generation is increasingly realised they have been blocked by the GFW, and they are hungry for info from outside.
I like how they used old cameras. Great video, i didn't know china was like that

Horrifying,
Its sad honestly because they are trying to live in a reality that will not last...What will happen after 5-10 years when they turn older and society no longer wants them and their own realities fade away...
Live life when you're still young. Make yourself feel like you're alive.
I think that society would evolve with them and encourage more young ppl after them
You make no sense, this isn't a fad or trend. It's a way of life.
I like pink lashes voice. 🤩😍 It has a nice tone.
希望能看到有一天所有的Sterotype隨著China's Great Firewall的倒塌而倒塌。
Paulin Evil

because a lot of East Asian youth have no idea about what things really are, they just see it think its cool then copy it. Like the Chinese trap music, they don't live that style, they ain't grow up in ghettos, but they see videos and think its cool and copy it.

Inspiring video. The youth are changing the world!
the government it's easy to get your information y'know ... ganggang
thumbs up for this great camera work
I experienced that chinese teens are very open minded inside, but their curiosity was killed by the government and parents. Although I don't want to say that the government is bad, a little bit of the chinese conservativeness is slowly changing into a more liberal thinking. The government will have to understand those trends in ways of thinking and take their chance to accompany this change by adapting slowly.
leokgym all people are curious, it's culture and government that surpress us.
nassim zway I can just agree. The best example would be babys and children.
