@@flibidydibidy I was not even aware that there ARE 275 speed run videos. There certainly are not that many on RUclips, so I don't know where else he got them. Where would I find them, for instance?
It's awesome to finally see the finished product. So much work went into just the sub 5's I can't imagine how painful it would be to do all the runs. Big thanks to everyone who worked on this project. Also glad my green Mario was able to make it into the top 3 before this came out.
I love how every Mario looks seperate at the end, everything looks SO SO AMAZING! I've been watching this series for a while, and I can't believe the final product is here :) Can't wait for more of this from you, I just know it's gonna be a good time! Good luck making everything awesome :D
2:14 I don't think I've ever seen a more clear demonstration of framerules. If I didn't already understand what they were, I sure as hell would after seeing this.
The combined runs are nice and all, but I absolutely loved the look behind the scenes. This is just crazy, and fantastic. Thank you for creating not only the video, but also the information on what went on to get this all to work
This is f*cking nuts, I love it, you shouldn't be disappointed at all with "only" getting the sub 5 runs, honestly I think it makes a more compelling theme/narrative.
3:14 a wild SummoningSalt appears! It's massively underrated that how good he is in several games, most people only giving him credit for his speedrunning history videos, which are also incredibly well done.
2:14 That's me! This is one of the most technical video projects related to speedrunning that I've seen in quite some time, and I cannot imagine what it took to make it happen!
This is actually a really cool visual representation of frame rules. They all exit the level in different places and enter the next in neat lines with equal separation. It’s cool.
This is finally finished! This was such a huge project. I’m thanking everyone who helped in the making of this video in behalf of everyone who watched it.
It was so much fun to see the groups of Marios at the beginning of every level. Also, the flaming death circles on the water portion of 8-4 were pretty cool too.
Love seeing a physical manifestation of the framerule system at the start of each level, so funny to watch those well ordered Marios get progressively desynced as the level goes !
As I was watching I had a few questions like what the number in the lower left meant and why some of the Marios were a different color. My mind imploded and then exploded when I realized the answers while watching the "making of" section after the run finished. I have no words other than "WOAH".
From an editing perspective, when watching this, I was just trying to think how it could be done, remembering the other recordings like TavenWebb's. (like CRT TV and stuff, plus being at an angle I was definitely expecting warping to take place) I had assumed that the variance in Mario color was just color correction to make the backgrounds all line up. When you started pulling out the AI neural networks and stuff, that's where you lost me LOL. Insane.
Wow. Really impressive! As for it only including runs under 5 minutes, that seems like the right choice to me. If the Marios are more than a few seconds apart, they couldn't really be shown on the same screen. With only sub 5s, the maximum distance between Marios is only around 5 seconds. I also think the input-focused method here is the best one moving forward. To ease the workload in the future, maybe runners could record their inputs and post them so that some runs don't need any additional work. For old runs or ones without input, maybe part of the process of determining their inputs could be automated. You guys already have a tool that can look at video of a run and track Mario decently, maybe it could produce a rough outline of the inputs required with some work. It could also theoretically cross reference with an emulator to verify them. Anyway, awesome project!!
Great thoughts Qflame! I have been exploring things along the same lines.. The game is just so well suited to this task, and the results are much better than any image processing could realistically be. I do want to return to the image processing (specifically for live applications!), but for offline things the TASing is much more ideal. Thank you!

Ive been seeing updates for this on and off, it’s refreshing to see someone care enough to visualize something like this. I hope it does very well for you and I appreciate your efforts
Love it, but because it's such a callback to Lemmings in how it feels, I think you should have a Lemmings-style countdown and mass explosion on all of the runs that aren't top 10 or so. Would be hilarious for those of us old enough to remember that game
So from the looks of it, 8-1 is where the 2 sub 4:55s gained an extra frame rule and they were ahead of the pack from there on out. So much information can be gained just from watching this.
To be honest this is an amazing idea and I'll be using it if ever I need to do another one. It is excruciating wondering if someone is editing or not. Go park your dang cursor when you're not inputting
I love how you can see just how intensely tough 4-2 and 8-4 can be. Most of the other levels they kind of finish in clumps but those levels breaks all of them up. I also love how you can see the difference framerules can make whenever a new level is started.
This video was missing one thing, which should hopefully be incorporated into the next "edition." I loved the summary shots at the end, showing off the main tricks, but to this should be added a final shot of the Axe, zoomed in big, and in super slow motion, as if we're getting the photo finish of a horse race, and see the first few Marios get that axe. Or as DGR would say: SMACK. DAT. AXE!!!!
That was a really cool video to see. So much work went into making this video and everyone involved deserves the best. Thanks for sharing this with the world.
Being the last place finishers in this video is like being the last place runners at the Olympics. Still a world class athlete, but looks like child's play compared to the medalists.
