In this video I take an in depth look at whether Tonex behaves and feels like playing through an actual real world tube amp. I have heard some people claim that while Tonex might sound alright, it lacks the feel and behavior of a real amp. I personally have never found that to be the case and in this video, I hope to dispel any myths around this topic and put folks minds at ease that Tonex is in fact, behaving just as it should and as close to the real amp as possible. I really hope you enjoy the video and the tone models I showcase in the video.

You deserve an award for all of the RELEVANT work that you do. everything I have seen you test/create/tweak is so RELEVANT for the digital age we're now in. This is one of the reasons I went with TONEX - responsiveness & adjustability. Jason, you are going into the guts of the equipment & signal chain & knobs, etc.... just like back in the 70s/80s/90s when guys were discovering how to get better tones with simple pedals, now the tools are more complex, the variables are so much more, THANKS Jason for doing these videos - and your captures are awesome.

been playing a HX Stomp for a few years which worked great for gigging, last weekend I played Tonex for the 1st time. They both sound really good, but Tonex reminded me so much more like my old amps used to react especially when using the volume control. it was awesome, if you are a always on 10 kinda player they both work great, if you use your controls get a Tonex

I've owned a Fender Tone Master Deluxe reverb and a Helix. While both sounded great, neither responded to touch the same way my old tube amps did. The ToneX pedal on the other hand has that "touch" that modeling amps lack. So I use the Tone X pedal exclusively now and couldn't be happier. Your mileage may vary but that's where I'm at.

TONEX consistently impresses me. I'm still blown away 4 months after trying it out myself and modeling my own cherished amp tones. It really feels like I have my amp miked up in the other room when I'm recording with it. I still get excited when a model is done, A/B it with the real thing, and go "there it is. That's my amp"

I did the same test with my own captures. Both my guitars (RS Guitarworks pots) and my amp (JTM 45/100) are very sensitive to the volume potentiometer. So far, Tone X is the only device to reproduce almost exactly the same behavior (I've had Line 6 units, I've had a Kemper for over 10 years). Well done IK. Tone X is the device that put my Kemper in the closet!

    Really cool, Jason!!
Now I'd like to see the converse.
How does the ToneX react when hit with gain pedals in front of your tone models.

Very cool. I'm still considering snagging a Tonex. Question or one thing I'm confused about here... Even though you're turning down the level of the guitar and how that's hitting the amp, shouldn't you still be recording a signal that is 100%? I guess what I'm saying is, I think I would rather the volume stay the same when I changed Tonex presets but just have the level of amp distortion lower. Seems like there would be greater dynamics and signal to noise ratio that way. Or am I missing something? Great Tonex demonstrations and explanations.

Jason, can you please do a video on how to calibrate the input/output levels of your interface and DAW to get the most out of Tonex? It would be great to know the process so we can get the best representation of your captures and more accurately capture our own amps and pedals. Thank you!

Let's say i'm glad i saved my money and didn't get a Kemper. I managed to hold out all these years thinking. "It's not good enough. It's not there yet..I don't want to pay that much money for something that "almost" sounds like it, there's probably an ampsim that sounds very similar. It's good but so many of the sounds is average ampsim sounding".
Fastforward the Tonex is here and i must say. Everytime i've logged onto the IK tonesite and just clicked a preset. All i tweak is the gain, pretty much. What is there to fix? Usually it sounds great immediately! it's time to re-amp my badly Amplitube4 *noisy artifacty tone* for my EVH Tribute song and hopefully "get it right" this time. At least i can't blame the VST now if i fail, ha ha!

I thought that my TONEX Pedal sounded and felt pretty real on the modeled amp/cabinets I worked with .... for the very short time that any of my 3 TONEX Pedals actually worked (Original Pedal plus 2 replacement pedals). Unfortunately ALL 3 of my pedals were faulty ... defective and within a short span of time, & failed completely. I purchased the first pedal in March of this year and returned the 2nd replacement late in August for a refund. Most of the time, I did not have a working pedal. A lot of the time of my "ownership" was consumed with trying to get a hold of IKM "tech support" and then with the back and forth emails with them (very inefficient). We either decided to try something to get the pedal working again or to give up completely and order a new one. Based on this experience with IKM, I will never buy another product from them. They have some serious QC problems and very poor tech support. It's a shame, because it seemed like such a great investment and when working ... sounded very good. The bottom line that trumps all is that any product I purchase and use live MUST be reliable. I've never had to return any product I've ever purchased and that's since I first started playing in 1965 ... and played professionally for many years after my start. I feel that I trusted the TONEX promo videos far too much. The problems I had with this company and its products were a real surprise for me.

Three failures of the same unit isn't a problem with ToneX, there is something else going on. It's not my job to figure out what that is and I have no way of testing it, but I would look at the power supply, the electrical wiring, heck.. is your house haunted by ghosts? Something weird is going on.
There are no inherent hardware issues with the ToneX pedal (on a large scale). There are some minor software bugs and complaints with the UI in general but nothing major or out of the ordinary. I'm not saying that a failure can't happen because every electronic device has the chance of that happening, even premium expensive devices.. but it's like 1-5% at most. Every device has that risk whether it's a new phone, a new laptop.. it's just the nature of electronics in the modern world. But these are so cheap and too many people own them. It would be very well known if there were any major problems. Look at Sweetwater reviews, the only negative rating doesn't even mention failures, just complaints about the pedal itself. I've been following online reports of this device closely all year via various online forums and failures haven't been mentioned.
Even when a device does well publicized hardware problems.. or an inherent flaw in its design.. 3 failures "in a very short time" is almost unheard of. Maybe someone put a voodoo curse on you. The only other thing I can think of is that IKM are sending you out dodgy refurbished replacements instead of a new unit, that could be possible. I'm not saying IKM did that, but some companies are known to do things like that and it's possible they did the same thing. If they did that, that sucks.. but it's not a QC issue, there's something else going on.
I've seen it happen with GPUs, CPUs, motherboards, generally when it happens.. something else is wrong and no matter how many replacements are given it will keep failing, because something else is triggering it. My first instinct is usually to make sure that the device is being fed clean power. To use a PC analogy.. you could have a premium high end video card, and it fails. You send it back, get a new one, it fails again. You swap motherboards.. the failures stop. Send the motherboard back and they confirm that there is a shorted connection in the GPU socket. The GPU wasn't at fault it was just an innocent bystander. It's very unlucky but stuff like this does happen. Just a hypothetical, but it's usually something like that. But who knows.. it depends on what the failure is and how it is occurring. Temperature/overheating is another possibility but it's hard to say without having more information.

Something else is going on. No way three units all failed like that. You’ve got an issue with your power supply most likely. Were you using a different supply from your board? Using a clean power conditioner with surge protection?

Sorry you had this experience Steve. I likewise had a terrible experience with IKM and their support team. I couldn't get ToneNet to work on a particular laptop with an iRigHD2 interface. Lots of back and forth and having me do silly directory deletions and reboots. After giving up ... six months later and they updated their IK Product Manager software and now ToneNet works for me on my laptop. It was their problem all along, but they wouldn't help me help them diagnose the issue. I too am soured enough by their support that my money isn't going to IKM in the future. I do like Amplitube 5 and ToneX software sounds, but if you have problems ... you are pretty much on your own.

Tonex factory amps have a disgusting dry and "honky, midrange" sound in them that I just hate. 3rd party comercial captures can sound fine, but then you just spend your money again and again....
