Springtime In The Harz - Part Two - Selketalbahn

- The Selketalbahn, in contrast to the Brockenbahn is very much a rural railway passing through the lovely Selke Valley. These scenes were filmed between May 14th. - 19th. 2016. at various locations along the route between Gernrode and Hasselfelde including shots of a train using the loop at Stiege

Excellent indeed Austin , amazing how the cars just cross in front of the trains at crossings and for one second I thought the silver van wasn't going to stop early on . Love the scenery at 12-00 with the stream on your right .
Thanks Steve, it was a close run thing with that van but the driver saw sense thankfully, not sure I'd have liked to have captured a collision. Real country railway feel about this line, got to capture it in autumn next

Thanks very much Geoff. The Selketalbahn is not as busy as the other lines in the Harz and is probably under threat so it's good to capture this lovely country railway whilst it's still there

Thanks Alan, we missed the sun the week before apparently and the first few days were surprisingly cold but saw sunny spells towards the end. As you rightly say it avoids the shadows but not good for Pam doing still photography!

the closest steam rides i've got is the Texas State Railroad. thing is, it's 500 miles away :(
i do remember my parents taking me there as a little boy, maybe perhaps 7 or 8. i remember eating rock candy on the train.. unfortunately, i was too young to appreciate the steam engine, even though i wanted to become a "train engineer" at a very early age. that never happened, (though i still became a mechanical engineer) and now my boy like steam engines, though, i don't think as much as i did. he'll be six this year, i think perhaps next year or so, i'll need to take him, for both our sakes :)
Thanks Wilford, 500 miles is a long way to see some steam trains and makes me realise how bit America is! I think it would be great to take your son there sometime just as your parents did with you. Steam has a magic about it that appeals to us all, even at an early age

I'd love to make a camping trip out of it, though it would need to be in spring or autumn, as summer is just to hot for camping in Texas :/
that is a very nice rural line as well. Particularly pleasant spot at 5:12. That's an interesting arrangement at 15:00; the train goes round in a loop and then goes past the station again going the other way.
I notice the locos have a sticker with what looks like a skull & crossbones on the tanks; I presume that means Kein Trinkwasser (Don't Drink the Water!)?
Thank you, the location you mention is Drahtzug and it is very picturesque. Bit of a gamble as the road is busy with lorries so I got lucky! The loop at Stiege only sees steam during the summer timetable and then only three times a week. The train comes in from Gernrode and heads off to Eisfelder Talmuhle. You are correct about the wording below the skull and crossbones, can't think who would want to drink the water from the boiler myself!
Love the loco at 4.00; reminds me of a bulldog.

Passion and beauty are words which are just the start of the amazing Harz. Couldn't help but notice the unusual feature of a 360 degrees loop. Has the loop always been a part at Stiege?
I believe so, yes.
Actually the loop was built in 1984 to avoid reversing freight trains from Nordhausen to Silberhütte. The radius of the loop is 60 meters.

The main shed for the Harzquerbahn is at Wernigerode and the main works is at Wernigerode-Westertor. There is also a shed at Nordhausen. The shed or the Selketal section is at Gernrode.
Cheers Steve, the three lines of the Harz system total 87 miles. The area is beautiful and is well worth a visit
The Selke Valley is worth a seperate visit. Use the train to get there.
