- Final part of a video trilogy from my recent visit to the Harz Mountains in Germany. This part includes some onboard and lineside footage of 1898 built Mallet No. 99 5902 between Wernigerode and the Brocken. Also seen is Mallet
99 5901 departing Schierke with a private charter on 21st.May. The opening scene shows both Mallets returning a special working to Wernigerode on 14th.May. Due to delays at the car rental office we didn't arrive in time to catch the pair on the climb to the Brocken. The onboard footage with 99 5902 was filmed on 18th. May and the lineside sequences were filmed on 21st.May with 99 5902 working a special train from Nordhausen. The final shot shows her in the woods between Elend and Sorge with the returning train.
Another wonderful production Austin, I was very impressed with your filming on the move and seeing the Mallets in action was a treat! I understand these locos were at one time extremely popular on narrow gauge railways especially in Europe and it's great to see three of them in action and in excellent condition. Thanks and best wishes! Ken
Many thanks Ken, they are wonderful machines and to be able to travel behind one this time was a real bonus.
A magnificent Machine Austin, lovely sounds superbly capture onboard and lineside....Excellent work as always...Bob
Thanks Bob, wonderful indeed and we were so fortunate that we were able to travel behind one on this visit....one of Pam's birthday treats!
That's wonderful Austin, Belated Birthday wishes to Pam.....from the Mastermans.
Excellent conclusion to your trilogy Austin. Cheers, Dave.
Thanks Dave, much appreciated
Thank you so much for a great treat.
My pleasure Geoff, many thanks for watching, I'm glad you enjoyed the video
Marvellous, very watchable.
Many thanks, glad you enjoyed it
Charming locos they are. Particularly nice whistles.
Exotic American Western style whistles although locos were built at Germany.
They are wonderful, we were very fortunate to be there both to travel on and film the Mallet hauled specials
Yes. Unfortunately they are the last two still run. At 125. anniversity in 2012 there were some more Mallets...
Austin wonderful, thanks
Many thanks John
Cracking stuff Austin , lovely looking locos and they make a super sound . Liked the open carriage onboard shots .
Thanks Steve, although it would be great, something tells me we'll never see an open wagon tagged onto the Fellsman!
Marvellous video again Austin. At the end it looked like you had got to the top of the mountain. The shots on the moving train were great, helped by the frequent bends in the track.Really enjoyed your trilogy,.....great stuff ! Geoff
Many thanks Geoff. You are quite correct in that the closing onboard shots see us arriving at the top of the Brocken
Excellent 3 vids Austin look's like you had a wonderful time and did well with the weather cheers Steve ..
Thanks Steve, yes it was a very nice time of the year to visit, a bit chilly early on but that helped the exhausts!
A really great end to your trilogy Austin. These Loco's are something special...so glad you were able to film them on and off Train. The Whistles in this one were just superb....A treat for the Ears ! Steve.-:)
Thanks Steve, it was really great to film them as on previous visits only managed perhaps one shot. I love those whistles, I think one may have to be a ringtone for the phone!
Great idea !!
You really must Austin, I can just imagine the reactions of people at the lineside when they hear that.
Super video Austin Great locos & superb scenery. Regards C&A
Thank you, looking forward now to the next visit
Nice movie.
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it
Austin thank you for sharing these beautiful images. The quality is exceptional. It makes you want to spend a holiday in the Harz Mountains. Philippe
Merci Philippe, les montagnes du Harz est un quartier très agréable à visiter
Great stuff, Austin. We never made the Brocken - first visit the line wasn't then re-opened and the second time, there was no time for it! So, great to see it all - and did you get covered in smuts in the open car?
Thanks Alan, surprisingly free of smuts but it was quite an experience and we wouldn't have minded them anyway!
Excellent footage.
Thanks for posting, the scenery and the locos' was wonderful.
I hope to get there in the near future.
Trouble is from Aus., I assume you would fly to England first, then fly across to Germany from Heathrow?.
That's a lot of hours on an aeroplane.
Thanks Peter, hope you are able to visit. I'd be surprised if there were no direct flights from Aus to Berlin or Frankfurt. We fly to Berlin and the Harz is only about 240 kilometres from there, mostly motorway
Hi what gear do you use to film these videos? i.e camera,mic...etc
I'm using a Panasonic HD-X920 camera with a Sennheiser MKE300 microphone for the majority of shots and sometimes a Rode Videomic
Thanks I've got a canon 550D and am thinking about the rode videomirco - really impressed with your quality
