Rangers fan here, and boy, what a tough year for the everyone who is associated or calls themselves a fan of the Islanders. So many legends from the greatest portion of Islander history have passed. Respect to those who passed and everyone who came to love them.
Agree!! It's been rough for the Isles & especially for the players remaining from the dynasty years. It's one thing when older guys like Al Arbour & Bill Torrey passes on because it's expected due to age. But it's another thing when former players like Butch, Trottier, Potvin, Nystrom, Smith & Morrow having to start burying their teammates like they've been doing since the passing of Clark Gilles earlier in the year knowing that with each passing year that there's going to be down a few people when they get together for reunions & functions celebrating the past.
It’s also been a not so good year in the standings. They’re going to miss the playoffs after two runs to the ECF. Varlamov started the season rehabbing an injury and they had a major covid outbreak in November right as UBS Arena opened. They also had an eleven game losing streak in the middle of all that madness (0-8-3). It’s been a rough year. Hopefully brighter days are ahead.
A season that hurts on the ice but off the ice a gazillion times more. I wish I had the chance to see him and the Isles dynasty in their prime. 32 year old Isles fan
@@marklanzer1822 I’m only 20. I only know the retired dynasty players and a lot of dysfunctional management groups and coaching staffs. I wish that I got to see that team that won 19 straight playoff series in action.
They were sure a talented bunch; this one took the most skilled of all… very sad from Bruins country.
Without question, the greatest pure goal scorer the game has ever seen in an era when goons like the Philadelphia Flyers were allowed to get away with dirty play. He was also a class act. May Mike Bossy RIP!
I grew up on Long Island, and The Islanders were so part of my life as a kid. Mike Bossy was perfection, and his goal scoring, penalty killing were beyond par. The line of Gillies, Trottier, Bossy was the Supreme line of goal scoring. His nine seasons of 50 goals was one of many great accomplishments. The islanders won 19 straight playoff series, and Bossy was a major part. We'll love you, Mike
I was looking at his career stat sheet today, and it reminded me that of his nine 50+ goal seasons, he had more 60-goal seasons (five) than 50-goal seasons (four) -- which is insane. We were privileged to watch him play during our youth.

A Rangers fan since 1979 and he was a big part in breaking my heart through the ‘80’s. But he wasn’t like a Smith or a Howatt who I hated Bossy was someone to be admired, feared, jealous of and simply envious that he was on the wrong NY team. He was a mensch. A quiet man’s man. Much love and light to his family, the Islanders da bass and his circle of loved ones and friends. He deserved better. That first championship team has been through hell this year. So very sad for all of them.
Mike Bossy, class, integrity, professionalism, a true gentlemen and such a great loss. Thank you Mike for blessing hockey fans with your high skill and drive to be the best you could be on and off the ice. You are forever a huge part of hockey history and my years being a huge fan of yours and your great team. Rest in peace Mike Bossy.

If he wasn't the greatest pure goal scorer ever I'm not sure who is. As a hockey fan I had a lot of respect and admiration for that Islander dynasty team. Four straight Cups, five straight trips to the finals and nine appearances in the final four over a ten year period. Bossy and Trottier one of the greatest and most dynamic scoring combinations to ever play the game.
@@jeffmccoy1700 Another key piece to the Islanders was Potvin, Trottier, Gillies, Nystrom, Billy Smith and others playing on those teams in the mid to late 70's that made it to the semi finals and lost 2 x to the Montreal Canadians - I believe in 76-77 in the Canadians most dominant season in NHL History, the Isles beat the Canadians 2 x in the playoffs and these were the only 2 losses suffered by Les Canadiens that playoff year. In 74/75 they came back from 3-0 against the Pens and came back to win (first team since 1942 to win a playoff series after being down 3-0). In the next series they almost did it again versus the eventual Stanley Cup champion Flyers... down 3-0 forced a game 7...Sure the missing pieces were added - Bossy/Tonelli/Sutters/Goring/Morrow - BUT the core team and coach went through those epic battles with titanic teams of the mid to late 70's........ Flyers, Canadians, Bruins, Sabres......hacking, slashing, fighting, old school donniebrook hockey.......
@@andrewnielsen3016 yeah you could tell back in the '75 playoffs that this young franchise was 'going places'. It was just their third season in the league and their first appearance in the postseason and they stunned the Rangers in the first round knocking them off in the best of three preliminary round. They faced elimination nine times that playoff year winning eight of those nine games. They were the ultimate underdog at that time and you couldn't help but cheer for them.
By the way, from there dynasty team I always thought that John Tonelli and defenseman Ken Morrow were two of the most underrated players of that Era.
Of all the Islander victories during their Cup years I thought their four game sweep of the high-flying Oilers in the '83 finals was their most impressive. The Oilers went into the finals that year firing on all cylinders looking unstoppable blowing everyone else away with their speed and scoring. The Islanders shut them down.
Ranger fan here. He Never got the recognition he deserved. A pure goal scorer. He scored 37 his last year and said he wasn’t playing to his potential because of his bad back…. Guys today would kill to score 37.. I grew up in Queens, and always heard of this guy Bossy, and finally got to see him play in the early 80s. A truly gifted goal scorer. I think in my opinion Bossy and Mike Gartner, truly great scorers that deserved more than they got. RIP Michael Bossy, thank you for giving us, as New Yorkers, 10 of your greatest hockey years and 4 Stanley Cups.

My condolences to Lucie, Josiane & Tanya. I know today is full of pain but also relief. Pain of losing him but relief that he is no longer suffering. I can't imagine what that is like. He was a great player and even better person. RIP Mike Bossy

Tears today on Good Friday. My favorite player on my favorite team. Mike Bossy's 9 straight 50 goal seasons and average goals per game o f.762 debunks all the what ifs, injuries, hockey era's etc. etc.. Even Wayne Gretzky got injured in season 8 and his consecutive 50 goal season run ended. Mike Bossy is in another realm of scoring and was driven each and every season to get 50 goals. He strived for that with no excuses and the results show. 40 years later and now even with rule changes opening up the game in the last decade the best that we are seeing is maybe 3 consecutive 50 goal seasons and just a few in the .60 avg goals per game range. As well the Islanders that Mike played on had so much character, grit, toughness and high skill. They could play any style of game and beat you. They are the last NHL team to win 3 cups in a row. In their drive for 3 cups they were down 3-1 to the Penguins in Game 5. They scored 2 goals in the final 5 minutes and won in OT. They went on to win the cup that year. This team would just never give up. Can still see Potvin his devastating hip check, great wrist shot and cannon from the point on the power play, Tonelli and the Sutter brothers grinding the puck out of the corner, Billy Carrol, on the penalty kill, Bobby Bourne going end to end, Trottier dominating at center as he played effortlessly and Gillies and Nystrom pounding other teams. They just didn't beat the Oilers the next year - they swept them and shut down Gretzky after a 200 point season . The next year with the tank empty and all banged up they somehow made it to the finals again. The Game 5 in the opening round vs the Rangers still goes as maybe one of the most exciting and dramatic games in NHL history. They just kept fighting through adversity and never gave up enroute to a record that will never ever be broken........ 19 straight playoff series wins......... A true testament to Mike Bossy's and the Islanders going to a higher realm and transcending sports........All the rest and even the Oilers only ever winning 2 consecutive cups know this and can only wonder what nearly 5 cups in a row would feel like.
And being up 2 games to none on the Oilers in that 20th series, the 1984 Finals.... it was in the bag. So we thought. Maybe in the Top 3 sports teams of all time. It was an amazing time to be an Islander fan.

They lost the first game at home 1 to 0. They blew the Oilers out in game 2, then lost 3 in a row in Edmonton and never got back to the Coliseum!
The NHL at the last second switched the format from 2-2-1-1-1 to 2-3-2.
That first loss, the change of format and how beat up and injured they were, made it extremely difficult.

i’m a flames fan but i’m also just a fan of legends. Especially this man. Was a hard day yesterday and still is a tough day. I am heartbroken for the fans and for the team. And for his family. He is the greatest there ever was.
I was born in 1982 in Vancouver. That year my Canucks made it to the finals for the first time. Even though I was a baby, I learned all about that season and watched the games years later as a kid. They had no right to have made the finals, the goaltending of Richard Brodeur was a real miracle every night, but they hit a brick wall in the finals known as the NY Islanders.
I never saw mike Bossy play a game live, just a lot of highlights and as a kid I studied his stats like homework. Even though that Islander team derailed the Canucks in 82, I loved them. They are the forgotten or overlooked dynasty in between Montreal and Edmonton. But I say, the Islanders had the greatest dynasty. They had it all. Defence, Offence, Goaltending and Coaching...but most of all they had Mike Bossy, the greatest goal scorer in NHL history.

Well said. Montreal has a good argument with 5 in a row, but Edmonton couldn't win 3 in a row. In a row is important because the shortened off seasons take their toll.
I'm a forever Leafs fan but Bossy was a great player. I don't usually care that much when a famous person dies but his death took a piece from my childhood and it shocked me, I knew he was ill but still.... RIP

Just a class act all around I loved his awesome shot so fast with his hands on the ice just amazing player all around what a power house the new York Islanders where in the early 80s when they won 4 cup's in a row as a Boston bruins fan I used to dreed seeing the Bruin's battle them in the playoffs and the power house team the new York Islanders were potvin Gilles bossy nystrom Billy Smith the list goes on and on but I had so much respect for bossy and I loved watching him play just anthore NHL great legend and person you will never be forgotten thanks for the memories r I p Mike 🙏🏒🏒🏒🏒

Was a big Flyer fan back then but we got WOR on cable and if the Flyers couldn't win I was glad if the Islanders could win. They were a great team and Bossy was a class act. RIP

R.I.P. Mike. Had one of the most intense ten year careers of any athlete in any sport. Seemed like a great guy as well. I’ve been a fan of the team for nearly half a century over here in Jersey and he was such a huge part of the team.

I emulated him playing street hockey, but he exemplified class on and off the ice and has a greater legacy as a gentleman, husband, father, teammate and friend.

Being a Cali kid growing up, I got intrigued with hockey when the US won gold in 1980. The first player I followed after that was Mike Bossy. Thank you Mike for bringing me into this great sport!
He had an incredibly hard shot, especially for someone who was not very big in stature pretty slender actually. Unbelievably hard shot. He was my favorite Islander because of his pure, gentlemanly play - like Wayne Gretzky.

he scored,2 of my favorites was the one that he scored to join the 50/50 Club, and the one that he scored against the Vancouver in The 82 Finals.
I am a life long Blackhawk fan and I proudly admit a life long Mike Bossy fan . I know greatness when I see it and Bossy delivered every game . My prayers to his family and to his teammates , I loved watching him play .
We can only imagine Mike in today's open game. Thank you for the memories 22!

No one will ever get me to change my mind, about Mike Bossy. He IS the GOAT of goal scorers. He became my favorite player, the first game I saw him play in, his rookie season. He has remained that, ever since. Friends eventually got tired of me, talking about Mike Bossy, but I didn't care! The national press always overlooked him, talking about Gretzky and Lemieux instead. Both deserved the accolades, but Bossy was so often not even mentioned during those conversations. Today, Guy LaFleur passed away and is getting 10 times the press Mike's passing got. I apologize for sounding bitter. I should be used to this, since it has been this way since Mike's rookie season. The only right wing I consider superior to Mike Bossy is Gordie Howe, and that is only because Howe is the GOAT, period.

I'm a diehard Islanders fan since the pre-dynasty days and over the years, great goal scorers have come and gone. But there is something quite special about someone who scores 573 goals in just 10 years. A true gentleman on and off the ice. Rest in eternal peace #22

The 1980 Olympic team who won the Gold Medal is what turned me on to hockey and Mike Bossy was my first favorite hockey player. RIP Mike Bossy #22.
Mike Bossy was drafted 15th in the 1977 NHL draft. Toronto and the NY Rangers actually passed on him twice no less. Scotty Bowman and his assistant Claude Ruel of Montreal had each been impressed with Bossy's play - and scoring - in person, but team scouts questioned his toughness and the Canadiens took Mark Napier with their first pick instead. Bossy was also drafted by the WHL Quebec Nordiques and offered far more money. Mr. Bossy said that he wanted to compete for the Stanley Cup not the WHL Avco Cup and signed with the Islanders

Bossy, Kurri, Brett Hull, and Ovechkin are the cream of the crop among snipers. I don’t know who was the finest but Mike Bossy was my favourite. His goal production was second to none. Of all his achievements the one that stands out the most to me was the three consecutive play-off seasons in which he scored a total of 51 goals (17, 17, 17).
My favourite of all of his goals was the one he scored against the Vancouver Canucks in game 3 of the 1982 Stanley Cup Finals. He was parallel to the ice and he fired a backhanded shot about a foot off the ice, into the net. He was a very special hockey player. He was my favourite NY Islander. He was outstanding.

Very sad day for any real fan of hockey as one of it’s greats has passed on. I’ve been watch hockey over 50 years and I never saw another with a better wrist shot wether stationary or moving puck. I’m no Islanders fan either but a Boston fan. He’s the only guy, except for Bobby Orr, I might take 1st over Wayne Gretzky….very sad news.

I still have in my scrapbook, the newspaper photo of Mike Bossy taking a header after he got the game winner against Toronto, which is seen at the 8:30 mark of this most moving tribute.
At that time I was a big fan of Montreal Canadians (not anymore!). I loved Mike Bossy and was pissed at the Canadians because they had the opportunity to draft him but passed. Just like they did with so many other great players.

rip #22. the 50 in 50 in dramatic fashion. The highlight reel goal vs. canucks in gm. 3 of '82 finals was a thing of beauty classic goal. 9 straight 50 goal seasons. 574 goals in just TEN SEASONS. Bbossy still owns the highedt gpg avg. in nhl history. to put that into perspective if the wonky back doesn't end his career in 10 short seasons and with a full 20+ seasons ovi would be chasing bossy as well right now. plain and simple the isles don't win four cups in a row and 19 straight playoff series wins without #22. simply the greatest pure goal scorer the nhl has ever seen. we'll miss you #22. bow tie made the right choice in the '77 draft. rip mr. bossy and say HI to al, bow tie, jethro, and jean up there.

Wow, I didn't know of Mikes death. I wonder was he a smoker, just curious? I had stage 4 six years ago myself. This man was one of, if not the best goal scorers in history. As a kid growing up in Jersey in the 70's I had tremendous respect for that franchise, they were special. Nystrom, Gilles, Trottier Howatt and of course Mike Bossy. One of the most unique and interesting franchises in sports history.
Yes he smoked. He also grew up in a different era. People really didn't yet understand the harmful effects of tobacco in the 70's.
Guy Lafleur smoked as well. Many famous athletes of the past smoked too. Not an excuse but we are more educated today than we used to be.
@@daboys1215 I'm 65 so I grew up in that era where every other TV commercial was for a cigarette brand, "Tareyton, we'd rather fight than switch." I never smoked and the reason is kids in my high school only started smoking to be cool. I always said if you have to try to be cool, you're not cool.
