As a life long Ranger fan (I am 58 years old) I have to say two things: 1) I absolutely hated all of those Stanley Cup winning Islander teams and 2) Mike Bossy was the greatest pure goal scoring winger I have ever seen
You got to see probably the two greatest pure goal scorers within ur division. Bossy in New York for the Islanders and now Ovi in Washington. Gretzky has the record (for now) but those 2 are probably the most pure snipers in NHL history. I missed most of Bossy's career as I was born in 83 but watching Ovi has been a pleasure. One of the best pure goal scorers to ever play. There is a great Pat Lafontine interview where Pat says he picked his brain about shooting, and Bossy told him he would deliberately try to put the puck on its side and shoot 5-hole, because it made the puck that much smaller. Great video.
All this in 10 seasons and left the game at the age of 30. Like a Boss-y! A tenacious sniper like no other. Bossy is my all time favorite hockey player. Every sport I ever played I took 22 in his honour. Talk about mixed feelings when he scored the OT winner versus the Canucks in game 1 of the '82 cup. Of all the people for Snepsts to cough the puck up too. Pretty sure there was under a minute left in the OT period as well. If I recall correct he also had the game tying goal as well.

I remember the 50 in 50 and new it was going to inspire the great one to beat it. It is a shame that he couldn't play another few years, to see Howe's goal record be beat at least.
Aside from Wayne, Maurice, and Mario,... Bossy was the best sniper ever. Sabres fan here. Punch could've drafted him. But the Sabres (with the French Connection- including Rick Martin; who was a very productive sniper himself) needed a two way defensive forward. It was fate for the Islanders. In 63 games a pace of 50,51 goals Also he had more 60 goal seasons than 50 goal seasons and half his career he played in the Stanley Cup finals insane strictly unheard of
in the 1986-87 season Mr. Bossy only scored 38 goals BUT only played in 63 games due to his chronic back pain. Assuming he could have played at least a whole season (80 games)-he would have needed only 12 more goals in 17 games to do it--and I'm sure he would have

Torrey told him to think about it for a while and see if he could get better. I think Bossy might have went to different medical people hoping for a solution but none happened.
Do one on Gord Lane!!!!!
Mike Bossy.762, a league of his own
I remember the 50 in 50 and new it was going to inspire the great one to beat it.
In retrospect: What a goal scorer Mike Bossy was! What a hockey player. Wow! Hats Off!
Repose en paix !!!
Don't give me this Ovechkin nonsense, Bossy is the best goalscorer of all time
Habs: The one that got away
RIP Bossy.
Before Selanne, there's Bossy. The man can score!
.762 Career Goal Ratio!
Bossy is my alltime favorite player. I even have a BOSSY name tattoo on the fingers of my right hand in orannge and blue Islander colours.
Bossy is, in my mind, the GOAT
RIP, Mike.
Bossy burned the candle bright on both ends leaving few miles of tread left.
How about something from the Broadstreet Bullies?
I hated that team, they were a detriment to the league and the game of hockey in the early to mid 70s.
Yeah they were controversial, but they deserve one. And how do you stop a bully? You beat him up, which the Habs did in the '76 final.
r.i.p Mike
Injured, 63 games 38 goals 37 points. Think today’s islanders could use that?
His average of 57.3 goals per season is the highest of any player in NHL history, probably won't ever be broken
Just my humble opinion, but the really interesting video to me is going to be the one about BILLY SMITH! He was a great goalie and I HATED HIM!
Bossy's worst season is when he scored 38 goals; totally insane !
Assuming he could have played at least a whole season (80 games)-he would have needed only 12 more goals in 17 games to do it--and I'm sure he would have
Mike Bossy: Canucks remember their 1982 nemesis
Mike Bossy, the New York Islanders sniper who later became a passionate advocate for clean, skilled hockey, has died of lung cancer.

He was 65.
Bossy achieved many heights as an NHL player, scoring 50 goals in nine of his 10 seasons with the Islanders, the only season he didn’t hit the legendary mark was his last, when a debilitating back injury cut his career short aged just 30.
In retirement, he was outspoken about how violence was ruining hockey and that the game should be a clean one. It was a controversial position in an era dominated by Don Cherry’s rock ’em sock ’em view of the game, but Bossy never backed down.
For years he was involved with the Safe and Fun Hockey program, alongside Bobby Orr and Cassie Campbell-Pascal, teaching young players what he believed where the essentials of the sport.
Bossy often spoke of how he hoped to work for an NHL team, but thought his outspoken nature made him a pariah. He worked in media for years as well as in sales for several companies. In 2006 the Islanders finally brought him back into the fold, working in a team ambassador role.
In Vancouver, Bossy was best remembered for how he haunted the Canucks in the 1982 Stanley Cup Final. He scored seven goals, leading the Islanders to a 4-0 series sweep over the Canucks.

His performance equalled Jean Béliveau’s record for most goals in a Cup Final series at the time.
Stan Smyl, now the Canucks’ vice-president but the team’s captain in 1982, recalled what a dominant force Bossy was.
“What amazed me with everything, the clutch and grab - the ’80s defensively that’s how we were successful was being that way, trying to slow them down - was how good he was despite all that,” Smyl told Postmedia on Friday. “That cross-checking they call now it was a standard, and you paid a price. There were a lot of different kind of players who played mean and tough.
“As a player you had to be able to find those areas, you couldn’t be afraid and he wasn’t.”
Colin Campbell was a defenceman on the 1982 team. In an email relayed to Postmedia via the Canucks’ Alumni Association, he recalled how unstoppable Bossy was in that series.
“There is a video snippet of me in the net trying to make ‘a ball hockey’ save on Mike. Meanwhile, Sneptsy is tripping him and he is in the air prone but still focused on shooting. We could not stop him that year. He was incredible despite Tiger Williams checking him every shift, every game.”
“Mike was a very classy player and he was a real difference maker in the ’82 finals and a deserving winner of the Conn Smythe Trophy,” Darcy Rota, another Canuck from 1982, said in an email.
In an era of wood sticks, there were plenty of good shooters, but Bossy was a breed apart. He scored more than a goal per game in junior. In his first nine seasons in the NHL, he scored more than 50 goals, setting an NHL record for most consecutive seasons with more than 50 goals.

He’s tied with Wayne Gretzky for most career 60-plus goal seasons with five. His career goals per game, .762, is an all-time record. He once scored hat tricks in three consecutive games, an NHL record he shares with Joe Malone.
“He had a wicked shot especially coming down the right side - being a left winger I played
Great video Shannon! Could you make a video on the career of Mike Rogers? looked like he had 3 great seasons and then faded. Injuries? Before my time :(
Thanks for repping the isles today
I'm 56 & a lifelong Caps fan. I watched Bossy through his career & he WAS Ovechkin version 1.0 goal-wise. Not as tough as Ovi (one dimensional), but had a more accurate shot (keep in mind goalies had smaller equipment back then - hence more room to score).
