Wish you used a thumbnail of Neely scoring on Roy. He *loved* beating the Habs and ending the playoff curse against them. Neely, of course, scored the game and series winner in 1988.
Being a Habs fan, I despised the Bruins, but when it came to Cam Neely, I had nothing but the utmost respect for him, he could score 50 goals a season and also beat the toughest hombre with his fists, he was the ultimate power forward.
This trade still haunts Vancouver fans. Almost every time someone brings up trading Jake Virtanen on the fan boards, there is a response within minutes that's something like "Remember Cam Neely!!!"
I don't remember Neely having the off ice issues that Jake has had. Neely was a great guy and a leader. I have compared them myself, but Jake isn't going to have a Neely career if they trade him. Jake might be a 25 goal scorer and a gritty type guy, but I don't see a superstar.
@@TheHockeyGuy oh for sure JV isn't in the same building as Neely, in pretty much any regards. I was just saying the Vancouver fans are now hyper aware of the dangers of trading someone that might come back to haunt them. Funny enough, I used to play ball hockey and played against Barry Pederson's younger brother over in Naniamo once. He was uber skilled, but even at that level the average sized Dman could rag-doll him.
Great player and one of the greatest power forwards imo. Surprised there wasn't a video on Neely already, I think there's a lot of players from the 80-90's that deserves a video eventually.
mario's numbers would have been right there with gretzky's. he'd probably have 1000 goals. neely and bure would be over 600. lindros would have been a better version of messier (and actually less of an asshole, believe it or not), not sure who forsberg's comparable is.
Neely got 55 goals in the 89-90 season. Craig Janney played 55 games that season. If Janney played the full 80 Neely would have easily gotten 60 goals.
I coincidentally sat behind Janney's folks at a game in then old Garden once. They drove up to see their son play. I was wearing a Team USA sweater that night because of their son, and Janney's folks and I ended up talking for most of the second intermission. I suppose I could have gotten my sweater signed that night, but I was never into that. I like Janney a lot, he had a lot of potential that unfortunately he never got to realize but on the other hand, he played for his country and made it to the NHL, both of which kids dream about.
I hated the Boston Bruins but I loved Cam Neely. The definition of a modern power forward who never backed down from Joey Kocur, Bob Probert, Donald Bashear. Always sticking up for his guys. Then there’s his rival with Ulf Samuelson.
I had also cheered for the Canucks and Boston, I just loved Neely, Wesley, Boruqe, and everyone else there. I enjoyed Colorado, but preferred Detroit, but when Colorado won Borque the Cup? Well, I will love them forever.
I HATED the Bruins back then but loved Neely as a player. (at my age now 48 I've mellowed and hate no teams lol) That man was in a lot of pain after the Ulf injury and I have to commend his effort to put up the numbers he did.
Even Wayne Gretzky says that Cam’s 50goals in 50games should be in the NHL record books, but it won’t because of his knee surgery the previous season. And because of that he started season a bit later than the start of everyone else.
The year after Oates came in late in the season was when Cam only scored 9 goals in 9 games. Oates went insane. Scored 45 goals and 97 assists without Neely in the lineup. That was a crazy year for scoring. Oates had 142 points. I think Doug Gilmour had 127 points for Toronto. 93-94 was really the only year Oates and Neely got to play much together cause Oates was hurt too the next season.
Never watched him play because I was born in the year he retired lol! None the less, great video. You should do an in depth career video of Henrik Zetterberg too, when you get a chance.
I was a pretty big Pederson fan. When I first saw Cam play...I immediately forgot about Barry (well almost)...A huge pleasure to watch him play. I think my wife and I saw him about 20 times at the old Garden. He was so much fun to watch. And he could fight with the best of them. I still hate Samuelsson. And you happened to mention Moog, Oates, and Bourque. These four along with number 37 are the reasons we have been Boston fans since 1986...Our favorite team. Thanks so much for this.
Great stuff, thank you. Loved your post on Eric Lindros as well, another great power forward taken from the game too soon. Point of fact: according to Cam, the condition in his leg and hip was not caused by the famous hit from Ulf to Cam. It was caused when Cam went to hit Ulf, and Ulf moved, which caused Cam to strike his leg in an awkward way which led to his rare degenerative condition. You can confirm this by noting that Ulf’s hit was to Cam’s right leg, while Cam’s injury was to his left knee and thigh. While Ulf’s hit on Cam was dirty and he’d done it a number of times before, I’m not sure why Bruins fans keep saying that Ulf’s hit caused that injury. It is fun to dump on Ulf, but it isn’t true that he ended Cam’s career on that open ice check. I don’t know if footage exists of the actual play that injured him.
I think Samuelsson's playing "style" sure didn't help things, also it was a few years down the road till ANYONE found out about the direct cause of the injury..... Then year's of seeing Samuelsson playing hockey, while Bruin's fan's got to see Neely REHABBING.... Also remember there was half as much media then as there is now, so people weren't getting the facts pounded into them as they do now, when someone heard, and saw something then it was going to take much longer for that initial moment to be corrected/washed away.
Two words for you: Tim Kerr! Same story....same skill set...same output...nobody ever talks about him! Edit: Thumbs up HG...I see you did make a vid about that mammoth of a player!
Portland Winterhawk fans have great memories of him and the Memorial Cup team with Glen Wesley, Grant Sasser, Brian Benning, Marty Ruff, Ray Podoloski and the rest. Wesley and Podoloski also played for the Bruins.
Great insight on the career of such a talented hockey player who never got to achieve his full potential because of that dirty player ulf samulelson Cam will always be my favorite all time hockey player and I'm so happy for both his induction into the hall of fame and his Stanley cup win as a president in 2010/11 ( I saw that as it happened) Kudos to you Cam!!🤟
My favorite player as well and as a Boston fan I loved that he killed the Habs. But, at the same time, I loved that he did things like bring Ron Tugnutt out to the ice to take a bow after that famous game. That was the Nordiques of course. I was at the game, but the Habs connection comes in with LaFleur. The Garden gave Guy a standing O when he got a point (assist), and shouted "GUUUYYYYYY!" when he had the puck. Wasn't a taunt, we knew he was an all time great and it would be the last time we saw him play. I gave Guy LaFleur a standing ovation at the Boston Garden. What a night.

Interesting Neely's first three years were ok, and he becomes a HOFer. Jimmy Carson's first three years are awesome, 37, 55, and 49 goals, two 100 point seasons, the 2nd teenager to score 50 goals, I believe the 1st or 2nd American to score 50 goals. My favourite THG episode of all time. I can relate to your relationship to Cam Neely so much. Mike Vernon for me.
