I, too, remember my father, God rest his soul, singing this song. He was born in Korea in 1935, lost both parents during Korean War, and was sent to a foster family in San Jose, CA where he went to highschool and college. He came back to Korea after he graduated, but I guess he was more or less Americanized, a little different from other Koreans of his time as a result. For example he never watched Koren TV for the rest of his life, he only watched AFKN(American Forces Korea Network, a broadcasting service for American soldiers stationed in Korea ). He wasn't into rock and roll (because he was in the States before r&r), but he liked country songs like "Take me home, country road", "The City of New Orleans" or "Rhinestone Cowboy".
I was thinking about him today, and I remembered this song, and it led me here.

i sang this song as a young girl and it never left my head. Growing up, my brother (on the basis of the movie) told me that poor Tom had killed a stage coach because he hadn’t known about the war’s end. For the next 30 years thereafter i always sympathised. Then about 5 years ago found this song through youtube and researched thoroughly the history of Tom Dula. i’m still sympathetic and sad at his untimely end.

I was maybe 12-13; my brothers younger. We had no idea what it was we were singing about but we sure did enjoy singing it over & over. I recalled this memory when I came across book today by Sharyn McCrumb that attempts to recreate the story from the viewpoint of attorney who defended Tom. Great video.

I just heard this song for the first time today on the radio...It was a small show aimed at these types of songs....I am so happy that I fell upon that show because this song is truely a lost but now found classic.

    Throughout history
There've been many songs written about the eternal triangle
This next one tells the story of a Mr Grayson, a beautiful woman
And a condemned man named Tom Dooley...
When the sun rises tomorrow, Tom Dooley... must hang...
Hang down your head, Tom Dooley
Hang down your head and cry
Hang down your head, Tom Dooley
Poor boy, you're bound to die
I met her on the mountain
    There I took her life
    Met her on the mountain
    Stabbed her with my knife
Hang down your head, Tom Dooley
Hang down your head and cry
Hang down your head, Tom Dooley
Poor boy, you're bound to die
    This time tomorrow
    Reckon where I'll be
    Hadn't a-been for Grayson
    I'd a-been in Tennessee
Hang down your head, Tom Dooley
Hang down your head and cry
Hang down your head, Tom Dooley
Poor boy, you're bound to die
Hang down your head, Tom Dooley
Hang down your head and cry
Hang down your head, Tom Dooley
Poor boy, you're bound to die
    This time tomorrow
    Reckon where I'll be
    Down in some lonesome valley
Hangin' from a white oak tree
Hang down your head, Tom Dooley
Hang down your head and cry
Hang down your head, Tom Dooley
Poor boy, you're bound to die
Hang down your head, Tom Dooley
Hang down your head and cry
Hang down your head, Tom Dooley
Poor boy, you're bound to die
Poor boy, you're bound to die
Poor boy you're bound to die
Poor boy, you're bound to die...

When I was around five years old, in 1965, my parents bought me a little record player for Christmas and some 45's. My favorite song was Tom Dooley by the Kingston Trio.
One night I was in my bed singing it and my Dad yelled at me to get quiet and go to sleep. Three times he did this and I'd wait a minute and start up again. 😂
Then he said, "If you don't shut up, I'm coming in there!" I yelled back, "Well, come and get me then!!" Omgoshes!!! Clearly, one of the dumbest moves I'd ever made! Before I could figure out where to hide, I was getting my butt whipped.
My Dad only spanked me maybe 10 times ever. That was one of them...and I, quite literally, asked for it! And deserved it! 🤣😭🤣😭
