Fun fact: much like toilet water and gravity, the meaning of shrimp vs prawn is the other way around in Australia. Shrimp being freshwater and not used for much besides fish bait, and prawns being saltwater and commonly consumed for Christmas lunch when it’s stinking hot.
It seems to me that prawns are used to refer to big shrimps in the US, but not specifically fresh water ones. Like the common Prawn, the first species called that way lives in the Atlantic Ocean, and so are the common shrimps XD And in my country, we use equivalent terms (in french it's crevette for shhrimp and gambas for prawns. Gambas is spanish because why not XD), and Gambas is only for the bigger ones ^^
Agreed! There's something about the classic formula that just draws me in more - nothing against other hosts and shows, but I just can't seem to binge them like a classic babish episode.
I was thinking these would be more of a "shrimp nugget" or a shrimpy hush puppy rather than a whole fried shrimp. Like a chicken nugget, they'd be ground/chopped and formed into a patty or ball, then breaded and fried. You could add all kinds of interesting additions like green onions or shredded cabbage to the ground shrimp mix. Plus, you could stretch the amount of shrimp to a really enormous batch of Popplers.

I feel like you'd want to process the shrimp too and turn them into dumpling filling. You can add other stuff to it too and make the shrimp paste more flavorful.
I think the idea of this was to stay true to the lore where they are literally eating children. So the idea of an encrusted shrimp is not completely... Alien.
I feel like after they came back post-cancellation, it got real inconsistent, even though some of my favorite episodes are from that period. Before that, I agree 100%

We had a local Indian restaurant in my home town when I was a kid that made a vegetable Pickora that looked exactly like this and everyone called them popplers because of Futurama. Fantastic with a garlic creamy dip.

I always thought these were a hilarious commentary on the popcorn chicken craze of the early-00s, but your recipe here is making me realise this isn't too dissimilar from scampi! It's shrimp instead of, uh, squid? But being seafood cut into tiny battered balls and then fried, to be eaten along with alcohol, is a pretty similar idea.

It’s a great thing that I chose to discard any pretence of losing weight in the new year. Because I’m going to be struggling to maintain my weight because I can’t stop watching baking and cooking videos, trying to replicate it and eating all the mistakes.

We went to a marine research place on a class trip and they were checking out how to aquaculture some fresh water prawns that when full grown weighed 5 pounds each. This was more that 30 years ago. Where are those freshwater prawns in the grocery store? One of those prawns would feed my whole family!

I’m by no means an expert but I did learn in Japan to mix the eggs and everything else that you can before adding the water for tempura. So as to keep as much carbonation as possible

Both these and slurm are literally the most appetizing things I’ve ever seen on tv. And I’ve seen A LOT of anime. The one genre that takes animating food to a whole new level. There’s just something about how the characters reacted to it.

I think if you chop up the shrimp and then glue the pieces together with corn starch to make the center, then surround it with layers of wonton kind of like a modified soup dumpling with maybe a garlic butter gelatinous "soup" inside that then is deep fried, then have a gnocchi outer layer which is breaded battered and fried I think that would make a really "alien" chewy crunchy shrimpy poppler kind of like an alien shrimp chalupa ball

I think if you chop up the shrimp and then glue the pieces together with corn starch to make the center, then surround it with layers of wonton kind of like a modified soup dumpling with maybe a garlic butter gelatinous "soup" inside that then is deep fried, then have a gnocchi outer layer which is breaded battered and fried I think that would make a really "alien" chewy crunchy shrimpy poppler kind of like an alien shrimp chalupa ball
