I’d love to reply to you all individually but there’s too many of you. Thank you so much for all your incredibly kind comments. I’m genuinely overwhelmed! Just delighted that so many took a shine to Ethel and Tara. They were both a joy to work on. Huge thanks to you all, and of course to Dan who was so much fun to talk to. 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
your performance was stellar! Thank you so much. My favorite antagonist in the game, and it has a lot to do with the voice acting, and the writing of the encounters was also really good.
I'm from Eastern Europe and Antie Ethel reminds me of the hag from our folklore here called Baba Yaga. Your performance took me back to my childhood days when my late grandma used to read bedtime stories to me about Baba Yaga and Antie Ethel is exactly how I pictured her. I'm rarely reminded of it in my busy everyday life as an adult now. It brought me so much fond memories and joy. Thank you!
If anything, Auntie Ethel really really really scared the heck out of me (as she should, right?). And I am a 47 year old male who happens to be a gamer as well. I've never attempted to use hags in the D&D tabletop game, because I was worried I could never play them convincingly (the tabletop game can be a bit of a improv acting game with voices and everything) but you gave me an example for the ages! Thank you so much!
It can't be overstated how much I LOVE Auntie Ethel. She is one of my favorite characters in any videogame I've played. It's true what they say about the best of the villainous actors - they are always played by the kindest, sweetest of people. Out of curiosity, do you have any book recommendations political or otherwise? I read a lot of fiction but I'm absolutely open to anything else. I'm always curious about the favorite books of other avid readers and would love to hear what my favorite Auntie likes to read!
I was pleasantly surprised to find Ethel return in act 3. I'm low-key hoping she keeps evading death with her mushroom plantation so we can see her in a dlc or something 😅
You know what's crazy to me? A character like Ethel (a secondary villain type character) would be insanely forgettable in other games but because Rena gave her such a memorable voice and personality on top of the wonderful design Larian did Ethel becomes pretty much as memorable as any other character, main or not. Brilliant writing and acting work.
The quest is so memorable as well. I utterly missed it the first time around because Shadowheart told me not to trust Ethel. Glad I investigated on my second playthrough.
And that goes for so many other characters. I can think of a few npcs I've enjoyed in other games, but this game goes above and beyond any of them in that way.
I'm Irish, and I am staggered to find out that she isn't Irish! I was certain she was! What an amazing performance, she really nailed the little details! Definitely a Munster accent, heard accents like that all my life growing up!
tied with Raphael for me - both in terms of the villain character itself and the voice acting. Raphael is charming, eloquent, elegantly manipulative and deceitful, sarcastic etc. Ethel is masquerading as a disturbingly kind old lady that gives off a sense of something wrong - and then - revealed to be a uniquely mad / otherworldly / unusually cruel / gleeful etc. in a way that others villains simply are not.
I can't believe you managed to get Rena interviewed! Auntie Ethel was such a great character to fight, I loved interacting with her, felt satisfying dispatching her. Brilliant performance :)
She definitely knows a few Irish people because Ethel's accent is probably one of the best I've heard from a non-native. The bit about taking a wooden spoon to Mayrina was especially well-observed, because as we all know, wooden spoons in Ireland are used for disciplining children and not as kitchen utensils.
I was given the wooden spoon when I was little. It was commom over here in the 80s. I'm in Nova Scotia, for reference. Perhaps a..."tradition" brought over?
Her accent is excellent yes. Also, much of Baldur's Gate 3's writing and cinematics is developed in Larian's Dublin office, which I'm sure helped with some of the authentic Irishisms in Auntie Ethels dialogue (the other one I noticed was calling everyone 'petal').
What a lovely lady! Loved all the insights into Ethel's lines, accents and the writing. By the way, Dan, is it possible to have some of the writers or designers on your show? With how much praise they get from many actors and how important is their input when creating these characters, I can't live with all of them remaining in the shadow!
I. Love. This. Interview. Auntie Ethel is one of my favorite antagonists. I’ve played a few runs of Baldur’s Gate now and I genuinely look forward to interacting with her every time. I find myself reciting some of her lines when they come up. I’ve only just started my Gale origin run and I’ve already fallen for Tara. She reminds me of some old friends I’ve lost contact with over the years. Made me tear up a bit to be honest. Rena, you seem like a wonderful person, you’re an amazing actor and I wish you the best in all your endeavors. Thank you for all your hard work, you’ve helped create something absolutely unforgettable. Also, you’re absolutely hilarious.
He asked my Pie Question! 😂 I'm so happy. And got to learn Rena is vegan likes Mushroom, but Ethel would opt for Dog, Leek, and Child. What wondrous data.
Ethel was such a delightfully evil antagonist that I held a personal vendetta against her. I accidentally accepted her deal the first time, and was so mad that I reloaded specifically to kill her instead! The character work made me ditch a potential bonus! Hats off to Rena!!!
There is a way to both kill her and get the bonus. If you have one companion stay out of the fight, once you reach her cutscene and accept the deal, you can switch over to that character and have them kill her mid-conversation. Just make sure she gives you the hair before you switch
I slept on bg3, ive just strictly played souls games for the last couple years. The story telling is incredible. Aunty Ethel was definitely a memorable character.
To me, one of the most important jobs a voice actor has to do is to deliver the lines in a way you'd want to listen to over and over again. But Ethel? I can't _wait_ to meet her and am always sad when I finish her parts. I _love_ Auntie Ethel. Both, how she's written and delivered. The fine line between calling me petal like that and threatening me to rip out my spine through where the sun doesn't shine made me question if I should REALLY kill her, because dang, she's awesome! I don't want the innocent killed, but damn, _I'm dying_ to have Ethel as ally! She's entertaining as can be. Thinking about a badass-character for her: Nah, no big guns! She obviously can't be about strength and agility, it'd have to be about skills! Greetings from a fellow night owl (you can't entirely chose when your body and brain feels zestful, right? Also, dusk and dawn are just beautiful to experience)! And reading multiple books (and magazines) parallel to each other keeps the brain fresh, hah! Some brains just like that constant challenge.
lol hearing how Rena and her whole family were night owls I finally felt seen. my family were also night owls. it's kinda how I was raised. I've never functioned as a morning person. and even if I wake up in the am I can't function or get anything done until the evening.
I didn't know Rena voiced Tara as well! What a delightful, charming, funny woman. Speaking as a young curmudgeonly night owl myself, I hope I can be as cool as Rena is when I'm her age. 😂❤
The moment i've heard the voice of Ethel in the early access, i wanted to find out who VAd her. Because that delivery was just fantastic. Glad to see i'm not the only one who found the answer and appreciates this magnificent voice acting.
Auntie Ethel must be the most iconic character in BG3 for me. You did such a phenomenal job of voicing her Rena. It's a beautiful blend of wanting sit down with Ethel and eat every pie you serve me, but at the same time knowing full well you'll be licking the bones of my corpse. Such a grotesque and delightfully written addition to the game, brought to life by the voice.
I adore Auntie Ethel's character, but out of the two, Tara has my heart. Especially in Gale's origin run, Tara is an absolute delight every time I see her and hear her.
I've been waiting for this interview since I finished Act 1. Auntie Ethel is one of my favorite characters from any videogame I've played because of how incredibly well she was written and acted. I truly believe no one could've done as amazing of a job as Rena.
Auntie Ethel is probably one of the most strikingly memorable antagonists in any video games I've ever played, and largely due to the excellent performance of this nice lady! Thank you for inviting her to the show!
I always play good characters, even my Durge is a a good as possible but I admit I am very tempted to ally with Ethel in my current playthrough, just because she’s such a banger of a character!
When playing BG3 I just can't stop grinning when dear Auntie changes and shows her real, delightfully evil self. She is amazing. And how she says 'Petal' sweetly, menacingly, hatefully... just great voice acting. Kudos to Dan for all those interesting and entertaining interwiews. It feels like everyone is having fun. I certainly do.
My god, what a hero you are to interview this gorgeous and talented actress!! Thank you so much! Her voice of Tara made my tear up multiple times in the game, especially the parts (sad spoiler) where she misses cuddles from gale...And the hag is like absolutley wonderful disgusting, I remember playing that part completly alone in the dark letting myself go with the atmosphere in the swamps, I was horrified, the hag encounter was so much fun and intense, I will never forget it! So much love to Rena!!!
auntie ethel/the hag is one of my favorite supporting characters. honestly I am pretty sure I fell in love with the game when I did the auntie ethel quest line. Brilliant performance, petal!
Ethel is an all-time great character, in large part because of her performance. But I can't hear that voice coming out of a sweet older-than-me lady's mouth without being a bit terrified.
With all the top notch actors portraiting all the unforgettable characters in BG3, I've gotta say Auntie Ethel's "lotions & potions" is the one that will stuck in mind forever... thank you very much Rena Valeh! Amelia Tyler's "Authority" as The Narrator has to be the close second.
An actor for such a "small" (but loved and memorable) part I'd never expect to be interviewed and highlighted like this, but I'm so glad that it is the case and she deserves all of the attention and praise and recognition for her hard work.
That's so cool that we get to see and hear a bit from so many of the cast members, great work and great people 🧡 I don't usually check on actors from my favourite games, but i enjoy this so much with BG3
Some of the best voiceacting I've ever heard in my 30+years of gaming. I brought the skull from her dungeon just so I can click it whenever I'm in town so I can hear her voice.
She's awesome. Ethel's always been one of my favorite characters since I began playing the game for the first time. I love how she portrayed the two sides of Ethel. Of course the writers did a great job but she really brought the character alive (also I love the accent). Considering how high the level of performance is among all the great actors in this game, you gotta be a damn good one to stand out so much while playing a secondary character. Also, she really seems like the kind of person with whom I'd stay up till morning having a laugh and listening to her talk.
Absolutely lovely interview. You both had a real chemistry and Rena is incredibly fun, probably one of the best interviews in BG3 series. I expected to skip it through, but couldn't, it was so fun!
Thank you Rena! Your acting was incredible. You lent your voice to one of the most memorable characters in the game! Very well done. I hope to experience your talents in future games.
Well, well, well! This was fantastic, thank you soooooo much for giving this amazing human being the spotlight, would love a sequel you two got on like a house on fire 🎉🎉🎉
Thank you Rena for all your amazing work! Auntie Ethel is a character that I will remember for a loooong time! (The line “rip your spine through your arsehole” alone will be a cherished memory 😂)
I remember my first encounter with Ethel in the druid's grove, I truly loved her character she was very wholesome. It was kind of a bummer finding out she was actually a hag, but still I really liked her character! especially the way she says "Petal" and "oh bollocks!"😂
She's such a precious person, phenomenal performance and just an absolute joy to hear her interview. Please keep doing what you are doing because you are amazing at it!
Ethles quest was the first one I directly followed after I arrived in the druid groove. Her voice and the sweet way she talked and "cared" made me smile and tell my friend I played coop with that I want to visit nana ethel NOW.
omg she played the role PERFECTLY. really captured well the essence of a kind old lady that has a something hidden and menacing about her - and then when she's finally revealed it's like - wow. the madness, devilish grin and this kind of "gleeful cruelty" is such a perfect portrayal of that creature
Thank you so much for interviewing Auntie Ethel. I was so happy to see and get to know her. I loved her in BG3. I'm currently in my 4th playthrough as the dark urge making villainous choices and im sooo looking forward to adding her to my allies of villain's. I saw on another YT video she can be recruited to join your alliance in the 3rd act if you play it right lol. That is so different and looking forward to seeing different cutscenes. I'm enjoying all your BG3 interviews. Keep them coming.
Thanks for another great interview, Dan! I'm so delighted to see Rena talk about Ethel and Tara. Such great character and Rena seems like an absolute delightful person 🌹
Hearing Rena in this interview is engaging my flight or fight response. Can't emphasize how great of a job she did. This is and will always be THE hag I think of when I need inspiration for my d&d campaign.
I always found it so funny when she called my character “You little shit” given he’s a halfing, it’d cut to his face and he’d frown and fold his arms. It was killing me.
Auntie Ethel making me realize how much therapy i truly need because the undying loyaty i had for this elderly woman simply because she gave me a pretty pet name is unfounded
I’d love to reply to you all individually but there’s too many of you. Thank you so much for all your incredibly kind comments. I’m genuinely overwhelmed! Auntie Ehtel is my favorite character in the game because of the voice acting, and there is a lot of competition in Baldurs Gate 3!
Aunthie Ethel is one of the best characters in the game IMO. Her actor Rena seems just as interesting if not more, she absolutely nailed Ethel!
"Don't you leave a crumble on that plate, gal!!!"
Agreed! Ethel was a nice twist, and her VA sounds really nice
I was pleasantly surprised to find Ethel return in act 3. I'm low-key hoping she keeps evading death with her mushroom plantation so we can see her in a dlc or something 😅
Very Brothers Grim.

Best antagonist in the game in a game packed with great antagonists. Excellent performance.

Auntie Ethel was the BEST villain, I legitimately wanted to have a cup of tea with her.
oh man, I loved every scene with aunty Ethel, so charismatic - one of characters you will never forget
Thanks for another great interview, Dan!
I'm so delighted to see Rena talk about Ethel and Tara. Such great character and Rena seems like an absolute delightful person 🌹
Auntie Ethel was amazing! Absolutely golden work! Auntie Ethel and Raphael are just legendary villains.
You killed it Auntie! One of my favorite villains in the game!
Hearing Rena in this interview is engaging my flight or fight response. Can't emphasize how great of a job she did. This is and will always be THE hag I think of when I need inspiration for my d&d campaign.
She is wonderful! One of my favorite characters.
Almost cost me my honor run 😅 such an amazing performance! Great interview ❤

honestly ethel is one of my fav npcs she's so entertaining
I love Auntie Ethel’s voice. She really stood out as a character. So glad to see the talent behind the character! ❤❤❤
I always found it so funny when she called my character “You little shit” given he’s a halfing, it’d cut to his face and he’d frown and fold his arms.
It was killing me.
Rena absolutely crushed her role as Auntie Ethel. Such a memorable villain!
Wonderful interview, thank you!
I'm from Cork, I literally thought this role was an Irish actress. Kudos!
Auntie Ethel making me realize how much therapy i truly need because the undying loyaty i had for this elderly woman simply because she gave me a pretty pet name is unfounded
Dayum she is good, i never noticed she did Ostankya in wh3 aswell.
Lovely interview, was a joy to watch! Auntie Ethel is the best hag ever!
Rena Valeh is hysterical! What a gem. Great interview rapport.
