      When I asked Adam how many different keys he played in when performing the Maple Leaf Rag, he told me he thought it was seven. (I'd complained about the impossibility of playing along with his RUclips videos because of his Many key changes!)

    Some people look at eye contact and applause too negatively while playing, which is a kind of style that interacts with the audience. Sometimes this is rather exciting. I hope you see it positively.

    This guy is as good as they come -- Bravo! One little thing: I wish to heaven he would stop looking away from his instrument; that behavior went out with the Lawrence Welk era. And it seems to demean the piano and the artist as well.

    • @crescenzoverdenavidacrociera

      it's part of this style specifically this old-time piano contest championship where they have to be also entertaining and not just playing like a formal recital.

      @@crescenzoverdenavidacrociera Too bad ...because it's juvenile, silly and silly looking. Can you imagine any truly great piartists behaving like that? (Please don't say Liberace. He was very good, but light years from "great ")

      @@TheAvenstar I actually don't like showmanship pianists, such as Liberace, I really don't like any pianist or musicians showman actually, I was just giving you the information of what I 've noticed about this young pianist and other contestants in the same piano competition they are probably instructed to look at the audience when getting applauses;
      the first time I saw it was a bit weird, then I got used to it when watching this piano contest old style, I've even done it myself during some piano show ahah, but then again I am about serious pianists I love the formal recitals.

    Why is he always looking at the audience? It is as if he is asking for applaus

    • @scottking4810
      @scottking4810 5 лет назад +9

      The amount of applause and playing to the audience is one of the categories for judging in this contest - so being able to look at the audience and away from your hands is a piano entertaining performance skill - also - many times when looking at the audience, Adam is acknowledging the applause from the audience which may not be audible on this recording - again - a skill that is potentially part of the judging total score.

    • @MsGrandunion
      @MsGrandunion 4 года назад +3

      Actually its the other way round. if you listen closely, the applause comes first and he turns to acknowledge it.

    • @scottking4810
      @scottking4810 3 года назад

      @@MsGrandunion Being able to acknowledge the applause by looking away from your hands is part of the scoring.- that is, the artist is showing that they appreciate the applause. Many pianists have tried to do this at the contest - and then make mistakes. Join Adam’s fee concerts on every Sunday night on RUclips and Facebook during the pandemic. Scott

      Scott was aghast people were having fun playing his music. He wanted it to be taken as seriously as classical. Thank goodness jazzers punched it up to stride in dance halls rather than let it languish, only to be trotted out in a stuffy concert venue.

    Why is it that American audiences clap during performances and not just at the end? Very disruptive and can't help the performer much.

    • @Akmanet
      @Akmanet 9 лет назад +1

      ***** Exactly was what I thought. Was about to write a comment about it, but you seems like you were ahead of me. To my knowledge it is very rude to clap in the middle of a classical performance. But today most audiences and artists are not aware of this.

    • @MrBlueboy6666
      @MrBlueboy6666 7 лет назад +30

      usually with jazzy sort of performances like this its's actually customary to clap for especially technical or otherwise awesome moments in a performance. If he were playing something classical it would be a totally different feel, and i doubt people would clap.

    • @davidcavalari226
      @davidcavalari226 6 лет назад +18

      Because this is not a classical performance. This is a ragtime/jazz performance, and one at a competition, and so it is encouraged and appreciated if the audience makes some noise when the performer does something they really like. It shows that people are having a good time. There's even a category on the judging sheet for how the performer handles applause.
