Got myself a Cat C Aygo 8 years ago (2005 model) as a little run about for when I'm not on my motorbike. Best car ever! It's very basic compared to some of the cars I've owned, seems to fog up inside all winter and I've had to replace a few back boxes over the years which were only about 30 quid each. I'll be getting another when Betty finally gives up the ghost 😁

I've owned my Smart ForTwo diesel for 11 years, with a gentle right foot, I can achieve over 80mpg, it's not fast, 0 to 60 eventually, but it's got a good sized boot, the front passenger seat folds down flat for larger items, it's a deceptively spacious car inside, suspension is a bit firm, I've had a front spring snap after hitting a pot hole, rather ironically whilst on my way to MoT, dpf filter went at 70,000 miles, the temperature sensor went at 125,000 miles, luckily this all came under warranty, I also had to replace the front discs and pads at the same time, apart from that, Bridgestone tyres are best for the rear lasting around 25000 miles, (the Continental tyres supplied when new last around 16000 miles), the front tyres lasted over 100,000 miles, no road tax, cheap running costs, doesn't really use oil or water, last week I had to replace the glow plugs, cost came in at less than £200 at the main dealer.
Admittedly I've owned my car since it was 5 months old so paid over £1000 for it, but because the press are knocking diesels and the public, like lemmings are listening, Smart diesels are becoming relatively cheap although I wouldn't expect to find one with less than 100,000 miles on the clock at that price but they are a well built sturdy car for the money

I have an Aygo on a 58 plate and have been won over by it. Can't get less than 43mpg, no matter how hard I push it or use the aircon. Nudges 65mpg when driven carefully. 0-60 closer to 12 seconds unladen. Great fun little runabout.

    I have a 2005 Fiesta 14 tdci which I've owned for nearly 17 years..
Fuel economy ranges from 55-60 mpg which I'm happy with. Could probably improve that on a long run sensibly driven. £35 a year in tax... Only time it ever saw a recovery truck was when a front spring broke rendering it undrivable... Fantastic little car!!!

My 2003 Skoda Octavia estate has 130 BHP, 0-60 9.5 secs, 53-55 mpg (indicated, actually a couple of mpg less) generally doing 8-16 mile trips on B roads. I do not hang around. On a recent 40 mile each way trip, mostly doing 50 -70 mph I saw an indicated 63 mpg by the end. The car (which looks a wreck) never ceases to amaze me.

  • @andrew4127

Thank you for that, really interesting. As it happens, I own a 2006 Yaris Mk2 1.0, with the same engine as the Aygo/C1. I paid £995 on eBay for it. Only reason I chose a Yaris rather than Aygo/C1 is that it's a little more 'upmarket' than the Aygo. That is, for example, the doors shut with a 'thunk', rather than a clang. Economy, as a run around with a fairly moderate right foot, is an easy 54/55 mpg. On a recent 200 mile trip, on A roads, keeping to about 60 ish mph, the mpg was just over 60mpg.
Well satisfied with the car. In 2 years ownership , it's never failed me, doesn't rattle or squeak, and it's comfortable. Reason why it went for £995 is that the colour is red, and as usual with red..., there's some lacquer peel here and there.
Thanks again for putting up this video.

@@marekkovanic6619 Several years ago, I did exactly the same journey in a near new Aygo. Difference was that I was pushing on quite hard. It did about 47mpg and as much as 60 on a run. it was a ghia model but the seats were fooked so he took the interior of a donor car and replaced the carpet too. bit of a sad story when a chap bought it as a cheap runaround until he moved abroad. went to our local scrap yard a few months later and found it in there with a few parts missing

Here’s a real hidden gem…. The Mk1 Twingo. Although never officially sold here, they have bags of character way more than any of the usual stock on British roads, 47 mpg average (May get higher on a long trip), are ULEZ complaint from the 2001 engine/facelift, cheap to buy overseas (although do not buy from France as they’re usually bad condition, Germany is the better option with cars looked after well over there), cheap to run and insure, come equipped with some quirks you don’t see in any hatchbacks in the UK (the seats turn into beds as an example), the 16v is the one to go for as it has more pep (8V - 60hp), you stand out from the crowd (LHD, not many in the UK, unique colours throughout their entire lifespan), basic equipment to the point it feels almost analogue, last of its kind to be manufactured.
The MK2/3 is wishywashy and will never be like it’s predecessor.

I was looking for cars under £1000 at the beginning of the year. All the VAG group cars were sadly too expensive as that's what I've gotten before. Wouldn't had minded a fiesta but all that I'd saw had lived a hard life or already sold. All the cars in general either had mega mileage, which I was alright with or had lots of scuffs, which I was less so. Eventually came across a great condition Peugeot 206 with low miles, 3 owners, good spec and full history that had been first to get to. £30 tax, 60mpg, has served me well, have done a few things to tidy it up and I work on it myself and very cheap to run.
My recommendation to people if they can is too try and spend a little more if they can on a nicely looked after car, once had a 1 owner polo. Only ever needed brake pads and the yearly service in the 3 years of ownership. Not bad for £4000 and got all of that back and quite a bit extra when selling it. Don't buy a pup as it'll cost you, once had £1000 polo with iffy history and life. Eventually died due to loss of compression after only about 6000 miles, had to be scrapped.

Used to have a Mk6 fiesta zetec S with the 1.6 TDCI. Decent performance and good mpg but wasn't ulez compliant so sadly sold it. I actually drive a Citroen C1 now which is I feel as cheap to run as the fiesta but slower. Will be getting insurance on a Peugeot 107 which is the same platform as the C1 and Aygo but this the fully kitted allure spec with tinted factory windows and everything else.

Being in the slightly older driver gap my current is a 2018 Fiesta 1 ltr and averages 38.4 MPL which I find is reasonable but I am thinking when the New Ora Cat (EV) comes out, might be switching to it with a predicted 220 per full charge but now that HM Gov has scrapped the incentive to buy could cost in the regions of £27.5K . Nothing is cheap these days.

Great video. Im finally learning to drive at 24 and ther car market is so different form when I first thought about driving 7 years ago. A video in the 2-3k range would be good as you can get some half decent diesels which have great mpg and low tax and they're not much more to fill up these days. Seen a couple of 2011 1 Series for 3 grand. Highish mileage though so BMW tax will be high for sure.

Common problems include suspensions, water pump failure, AC flap failure and faulty electric power steering column...Apart from all that, they are good fun and you do get some weird looks from people when you decide to send it off the light and smoke all the school-run-spec Kia Sportages! LOL

    Hi.
Is there a reason you didn't include any diesel cars?
I have just bought (stupidly at this time) a 2006 WRX. I am about to start looking for a new cheap daily with as much mpg as possible but hopefully less than £1000
Off of the WRX owners group I was recommended a Fiat Punto 1.3 diesel. 60 to 80 mpg (more than your top 10, cheap car insurance and cheap tax
