    This is the Roland JX-8P, possibly one of the most under-rated synthesizers. This time I have multi-tracked live takes with Big Sky and Timfactor effects-fueled production chock full of EQ, compression and a few dubious mastering techniques. The TR-8 drum machine is barely breaking a sweat, churning out a painfully simple beat. There are some factoids relating to the JX-8P along the way. What is this music? I call it a cheesy 80's dream pop rendition in 3/4 time with almost a two step feel. I know, I'm scratching my head too...I was very tempted to scrap this during recording. But it was too fun to see it through, too odd not to post, too catchy for me to easily dismiss.

    People think these are rubbish.We get that they wasn't the easiest synth to program but when you know how to it really comes alive. The amount of power its got with unison mode on and and a dco slightly detuned is unbelievable.

      Completely agree. I bought mine from Argents in '86, was thinking about putting it on ebay recently...but digging again into the depth of sounds and textures alongside my more up to date kit and looking at various of Mr Smith's offerings I think the JX8P absolutely has its own signature (even with limited FX)...its just too good to let go cheaply. Add a couple of stompboxes and we're off ...

      It's been a great summer, thanks for asking. Getting excited for next synth meet - Roland should have new toys to show then.

    28-STAB BRASS. My favorite setting. The primary sound for the riff for 'The Final Countdown' is located there. =)

    One of the best demo's I've heard. Haven't used mine since buying it and got a Kiwi upgrade kit to fit too so really looking forward to playing it.

    I bought one at a Salvation Army for $25. Since it didn't have speakers they had no idea if it worked or not and didn't know the value. I kept if for a while but I already had a JX-3P with the PG 200 programmer so I didn't need both. Now I'm wishing I would have kept it!

      You're welcome...the new bank is about half full. I'm torn about about overwriting my favorite patches, even temporarily, since I know I can restore them later.

    Its more or less the analog version of the DX7.

    • @richardballinger517
      @richardballinger517 5 лет назад +4

      Hi, I have a DX7 and a JX8P, I'm an electronics engineer, you may be able to get similar results to a DX7 because of the modulation options but they get there very differently. Only thing in common is the membrane switches and 61 keys.

  • @74goldenjet

    Wow, I just got to get these Strymons!
    I have the Jx-8p and I love it. It is so cheap its ridiculous. I will never sell it.
    Just switch off the built in chorus and voila, a superb analog synth.

      I've just discovered the Empress Reverb, too. Did you see kiwi technics has an upgrade for the JX-8P now? More patch memory, an arpeggiator, and more!

      I did not know that. Been drooling at the patch editor before. I might just got to get one. Again, thanks for useful info :-)

      gstormelectro I have, do you know anyone who's running this Kiwitechnics upgrade? Is it worth the £££'s???(not cheap....). Best 🎹

    • @gstormelectro
      @gstormelectro  7 лет назад

      @the_audio_eng I used to have the kiwisix upgrade for polysix. It was ACE. Build quality was top notch, safe bet the JX-8P upgrade is worth every cent if you want the kind of features it offers. FWIW when I had my JX-8P I found the 32 patch memory to be very limiting.

    Just called Gregor from Stereoping and ordered the Jx8P Controller 😁

    • @gstormelectro
      @gstormelectro  8 лет назад

      The Stereoping controller is killer. I built the version for the TX81Z and feel another demo coming on there. The OS can be easily switched over for the JX-8P by MIDI sysex dump but I haven't done so...yet.

    I have one of these, but it is in poor shape and needs new IC's to replace the ones that don't work any more.

  • @geoffsmith8172
    @geoffsmith8172 8 лет назад +1

    that was amazing
    edit: why do you say 3/4? i'm counting 4 beats on everything

    • @gstormelectro
      @gstormelectro  8 лет назад

      I think what I did now is record in 3/4 when I didn't have to :) The arpeggio at 1:08 was my original idea for the song, and goofed trying to sort out the tempo and meter. Then I recorded the drum machine with 12 steps, weirdness in my process ensued.

    • @geoffsmith8172
      @geoffsmith8172 7 лет назад

      gstormelectro I see. But even 1:08 has a 4 note pattern. A 3 note pattern is like a waltz. However, your thinking made the bar structure based around 6 instead of the typical 4, so it did work in a way~

    Great looking and sounding Synth, but only 32 patches. Is it easy to edit if at all?. Thank you for sharing.

    • @kiko1935
      @kiko1935 4 года назад

      If you have edited on a jx-3p it's the same basically. You select the parameter number and move the slider. Not fun. But you can get software to edit itm
