A bank of 30 original patches is now available for download. The bank includes all the sounds from Demo parts I and II. These are some of my original patches made for the Roland JX-8P synthesizer. Bass, dark string and synth pads, arpeggios and stabs.
There are some realtime patch edits in this demo without the use of the external programmer, so go ahead and give that EDIT slider a nice workout. Would have been nice if the edit slider had a pass-thru data function, that is why you will hear some edit jumps in the audio.
In addition to utilizing the Beatstep for sequence duties, there is gratuitous amounts of delay and reverb added to most sounds.

The more demos I hear of this synthesizer, the more thankful I become to own one.
Ahhh. Love that mesmerizing Berlin School sequence stuff at 3:26 That stuff is so hypnotic. Your programming and musical style has always been a favorite.
3:27 sounds like Risky Business territory. I love it.
amazing deep detroit techno vibe ! lovely
👍🏻👏🏻 i had this Synth about 35 years ago and I loved it‘s sounds!
A highly underrated great synthesizer; and a SOUND of an exciting era!!
2:23 is dark, warm and beautiful!
I think what partly makes the JX8P so underrated is that the envelopes and filters have a very narrow "sweet spot", compared to Juno-60 and other classics. These sounds are very well programmet, excellent work. Thank you very much for sharing! All the best.
+Walle Soop thanks!
Getting my JX8P tomorrow... going to be running it through my strymon bigsky/timeline to get some similar and I am beyond excited! Thanks for this video!
Oh shit, i'm getting that hungry feeling again! every beginning of the year i get this temptation to look for old synths to try and buy with the no money that i have!! damn you synth world DAMN YOU!
+InternalMind Haha, I feel it all year. I try to thwart that feeling making music and staying preoccupied. It doesn't help we are definitely living in a synth renaissance right now and its not letting up.
gstormelectro
Lol, something seriously psychologically wrong with us! i think maybe we're trying to find heaven but finding it in the synth world lol
I know exactly what you mean. 😂
I could really use a JX8P in my life
I have one of those little JX-08 doo-dads and it definitely scratches the itch. Having sold the original.
Great sounds. The JX8P is very underrated and my second fave synth after the DX7.
I'm buying this synth because of this video, thank you for the good video
3:30 and on .. Man that is a dream 16:1 bar sequence!
I love revisiting this stuff. I never developed these ideas or made a proper recording. Perhaps the time has come.
to anyone: the jx8p is seriously fantastic ..i've had one for about the past 10 years now alongside the jx3p.
Hey, you are one of my favorite YT Artists ! Bought yesterday a JX8P because of your sounds ! Bought two Matrix 6R because of your video !
Thank you very much and best wishes from germany !
+RobStew1966 Thanks so much! Did you say two Matrix 6Rs? You've got a pseudo-Matrix12 now haha. I am surprised the JX8P realtime editing isn't all that bad, everyone always makes it to be an ordeal without the PG-800. I used to have an Alpha Juno-1, now that was laborious to edit sounds. -g
Sound at 2:55 is gorgeous.
snap! had my 8P since the late 80's, noticed you have the Arturia too! Nice patches you've made!
2:25 pad sounds lovely :)
Superb programming! Great showcase of the rich timbres one can produce with the JX-8P...
3:30 great!!!!
thank you. you're skills are amazing by the way and your passion really shines through
You create awesome sound, thanks man! :)
Got one of these for my MPC today :D
Great Sounds! Super nice work!
This synth sounds better than Jupiter 8 in my ears. You can make complex sounds with Jupiter 8 and good lead sounds, but not fat brass sounds and fat pads. Roland JX 8P looks ugly, but sure sounds great. Combine JX 8P with the PG 800 controller and you would not miss the Jupiter's 8 knobs and wheels.
I disagree.... I think it looks sexy as! :D
I have a jx8p and a super jupiter mks 80 in storage both not working for years. The problem with analog is oscillators die. With the super jupiter the oscillators go out of sync but it has really tight envelopes. The jx8p doesn't have tight envelopes but has more stable oscillators. The jx8p has better strings and pads and the mks 80 has better bass in my opinion. I would rather have a system 8.
sounds great!
amazing fat sounds
Really dig the opening sequenced patch and the last sequenced patch at end of video.
How did you create these 2 patches, what settings did you use (I assume you started from an INIT patch)? Really enjoy the sonic character of those 2 patches a lot.
Cheers
Back again listening to the great arp/sequencer jams in this demo. 3:25 onwards is super rad. Awesome stuff!
Very Nice
Just bought mine and love it. Seems very low in output but maybe mine needs servicing. I noticed you keep the volume all the way up too
I'm in love with those sound !!! I'll take a jx8p from a friend of mine for free tomorrow 😍😍😍. I can't find your post in the blog with the patches. Thx!
What the...?? How is it people keep getting killer gear for free? Is it broken or something. gstormelectronica.blogspot.com/2013/01/download-links-are-back.html
gstormelectro it has just some minor thing to be fixed but the sound is still freaking huge !!!😍😍😍 Btw thx for the patches 😊
Great stuff. Do you have any of the mods for it or is this a factory model?
That one was factory.
I have tried to load your sysex with CTRLR and MidiQuest, but both fails. Any suggestions?
Maybe try Midiox. My other video shows the general process ruclips.net/video/ulNTvar2fCQ/видео.html You need an app that can transfer an entire sysex patch bank, I don't have those apps so I can't say if they can. Buffer size and transfer rate can make a difference. Make sure midi channel matches in app and synth. Enable sysex on synth, memory protect off. Most legacy synths require patch change to actually see the new contents, otherwise it just shows what was in the patch buffer prior to sysex transfer.
Love on a real train. Kinda.
Very very Nice:-))
a good way to control it without a PG800 is to use a Novation Zero SL. The only drawback is that it works with sysex... so it's impossible to save presets in an octatrack for example...
I started thinking about some this some more. Is there a beat sequencer like the arturia's which would also allow you to send midi signals to the different filters in the synth, the DSS 1 is really hard to program so opening up cut off filter etc. is cumbersome. It only has one MIDI in port so if I would want to connect an external parameter editing hardware like KISS Box and the beatstep would be impossible any thoughts? thank you.
How were you editing the cut-off without the PG-800?? I've been looking at getting a JX-8P. This synth sounds really good.
Stereoping
hello do you still have the patches for venom up by any chance? also I have a Korg DSS ! and I am wondering if I am able to use the arturia's beat step sequencer with that synth. Thank you.
My blog link is in the notes, go there and search for 'download links are back' post. Venom patches are there. DSS-1 has midi so yep it will work together nice with beatstep.
Oooooh, shiny! I especially like your string patch. Any hints as to the basic skeleton? I'd like to get something similar on a modern poly.
Gstorm, will these work on the MKS-70 via Sysex? Theoretically there should be some compatibility, but I know theory is often just that. Thanks!
I referred to the MKS-70 manual and it supports system exclusive bulk MIDI dump and load. So it should work fine.
Nice patches. Did you ever made them available for download?
gstormelectronica.blogspot.com/2013/01/download-links-are-back.html
I just sold mine..it was pristine :s why are you doing this to me..
Ouch. I got this one to flip, but now it would be extremely difficult.
Beautiful soundbank and playing! They sound so full and immersive. The JX-8P is one of my favourite analogue synths, and definitely will be a mainstay in my rig (once I have the space for more synths, lol). What are the names of the patches at the 2:23 and 2:47 mark? Thank you for providing a download link. 😊
2:47 is melodrama. Don't remember the other, I sold the synth regretfully and don't have a way to decrypt the patch names from the bank I uploaded.
@@gstormelectro Thank you!! 😊 I loaded the patch bank in the PG-8X (soft-synth), and they sound marvelous -- especially Melodrama -- it has a wonderful Sci-fi sound. I spent some hours with my MIDI controller, some TR-909 samples loaded up, and some external effects; just vibin' to these sounds. 😁 Keep up the awesome sounds and demos! Cheers.
How did you do these "chord" arps? By tuning the two DCOs or by using some sort of chord memory?
These some nice patches. Have you made them available anywhere? Cheers...
Featured post on my blog gstormelectronica.blogspot.com/2013/01/download-links-are-back.html
Thanks man.
So you're sequencing it through the beatstep?
I'd like this sample pack. Total rookie question but what's the work around to get the pack into the synth?
ruclips.net/video/ulNTvar2fCQ/видео.html that's an old grainy video, but still perfectly valid.
@@gstormelectro awesome thanks!
Sounds like OPN
was this the last rolands analog synths of the 80's
The Alpha Juno came out the following year 86. I would count the MKS-50 from 1987, it was the rack version of the Alpha Juno. This is why recently the JD-XA/Xi were a big deal - it was the first time in a long while Roland included analog voices in a synth.
There was also the JX-10 shortly after, almost got one of these then got the 8P when that deal fell through
I have a question, I am an ultimate NOOB by the way, but are these sounds coming straight from the keyboard with no effects added or are you running it through some kind of effects processor?
I'm using a Big Sky and Timefactor for some sounds in this.
Can you use the beatstep directly with the jx8p or do you need a computer? Thanks!
You can connect directly w/ MIDI.
Great ! Absolute Amazing ! Do you share these Patches ! Pleaaaaase !
RobStew1966 I've been getting a lot of requests for this one. I'll post some patches soon.
RobStew1966 The JX-8P patches are now posted on my blog.
How does the Beatstep work? You connect it to your daw and from there you let it trigger the jx8p sounds? Or is it connected directly to the jx8p?
Either way, in the video I used it direct w/ the synth.
gstormelectro through midi? Cool. Thought it only had usb. Gonna check out the piece.
Do you record with a hardware multi-fx unit (delay/reverb) in parallel? What does your recording chain look like?
Can't remember if I put fx in series or send/return from my mixer, or if I did that one with my old Alesis mixer or the Mackie I use now. I always record those 'sounds' demos direct to a Tascam DR-05. I used a Strymon Big Sky for the reverb and Timefactor for delays.
gstormelectro I'm thinking of getting the kiwi mod for my jx-8p. Pwm not withstanding, do you think this would get me close to the same sound of alpha Juno, as they have the same vcf/vca chip?
How do you do your arps? On the beatstep?
yes
2:23. It's amazing!
