GeekZone lol don’t get me started! Poor Legolas was reduced to a Super Mario Bros character. I mean he CAN shoot a fell beast out of the sky, and he can walk on top of snow, but even Legolas can’t run up falling rock!
One of the most underrated aspect of his character is his relationship with Aragorn. Think about it, Legolas is a prince, used to being in power and yet he easily submits to Aragorn's leadership. The movies emphasize on their friendship even more with all the awesome bro moments between them and they knew each other for a long time even before days of Fellowship. In the books, it's implied they were previously familiar. Legolas's sea-longing awakened during RotK events but he fights it for Legolas. Legolas keeps fighting it for long years after War of the Ring and he stays in Middle-Earth for Aragorn even after rest of his kin had already left. It's Aragorn's death that makes Legolas give in and sails to Valinor. They had a powerful bond.
Because Aragorn was such a bright leader. A man who puts principles before licentious. Some people knows a good king when they see one. But that's just my theory.

not at all, in the books Legolas is pretty awesome with many skills. and Please, stop comparing the books with the movies, its getting old and annoying
Not a god - Tolkien was clear there's only one God in the universe. Even the Ainur are not really gods, just kind of high angels. And one of them made the Dwarves. And in the movies, Gandalf is closer to God, but not even he is one. He survived a test, and was send back. Somebody higher than him send him back. So every hero is not a god. Litteral would mean really being that - figurative is closer. Nobody needs to litterally die for this. Uhm, except there's this one guy who litterally died so we can be with God. But it's another book. One that Tolkien revered the most.
Legolas and Gimli's friendship is beautiful. We can all learn from it. Two people who dislike each other by principle instead of giving the other person an honest chance eventually turn it around and become great friends.

Honest folk, they saw each other's valor and dedication to the quest, and to killing the foe at any risk necessary.
Seeing the Balrog is the first time in the journey that Legolas truly loses his cool. Even on the mountain he's running on top of the swirling snow cracking jokes about how Gandalf could burn away the snow.
Yeah, and it really adds to the expectations of the reader. For when Legolas reacts that way, we can't help but wonder what terrible foe awaited the fellowship
Even the Nazgul, terrible as they are don't frighten the Prince of Mirkwood as much as Durin's Bane. Seeing this it's very easy to imagine the Balrog destroying the greatest kingdom of Dwarves single handed. It didn't matter that Moria was at the height of it's power, the Balrog is a demon of the ancient world. Kingdoms shake and armies fall to the awful power of the Balrog.
From my understanding, I heard somewhere that Tolkien didn’t actually create the character Legolas until he started writing the LOTR books. So although he wasn’t mentioned in the Hobbit novel, perhaps had Legolas been created at the time, he would’ve definitely made an appearance or maybe had been involved with Thorin’s company. This is what makes me forgive the film for putting him in there because it would actually make sense for Legolas to be there during that certain story and adventure.
I read the books and remember that when Galadriel spoke to the company she had great sympathy for Gimli the dwarf , knowing how grand the mines of Moria were and how sad he must feel. In the book he felt gratitude and love for her, becoming devoted.
The movie version of Legolas is pretty much what everyone wishes human beings were like: immortal, telepathic, a great fighter, has awesome friends, is almost never at odds with nature... you thought I was going to say hot, didn't you? well, he's also that, so yeah.
The way u described Legolas and Gimmlie’s friendship really makes me appreciate the movies so much more and I really like all the lore that cake after the war of the rings. How they traveled to the mines and the forest together, then later on they both sailed to the lands of the undying.
What an awesome commentary! Your voice just added to it. Legolas has always been one of my favorites since I was a child and read Tolkien. He was even the reason I got into archery.
Thanks for this, my daughter is a huge fan of the Hobbit and LOTR. (She's fascinated by Legolas and is aspiring to have waist length, blonde hair. Already practicing archery.) Fantastic video!
GZ: 'and we'll discuss his skills' me: so the fact that hes literal god? GZ: we'll only focus on the books me: a surprise to be sure, but a welcome one!
Really cool to imagine Legolas fought in the Battle of the Last Alliance. I think its understandable he'd lay about as a pointy eared elvish princeling if he was just sixty, taking part in the battles justifying being in the Hobbit.
Thank you for making this video, it was great as always :). Legolas is my fav character from middle earth and I love his bond with the fellowship and Aragon, as well as his friendship with Gimli being one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen. :) “I’d never thought I die side by side with an Elf.” “What about side by side with a friend?” “Aye, I could do that.” One of the best lines in cinema
Two of my favourite moments in the book are when Legolas recognizes the balrog and when he shoots his arrow in the sky when he sees Gandalf in Fangorn. Neither of which are in the movie.
I love this video and always look forward to a new installation. Your voice is so calming but able to bring the story to life. Thank you and looking forward to your next video!!
Wonderful work. Thanks for that. I've read the Trilogy and the Silmarillion a few times each, but it's great and entertaining to hear a synopsis such as this. I shall now explore your other posts.
I agree with, well everything. It's notable that Legolas had no magical power proper with his bow. He was just really well trained. That suggests he is not young but possibly middle-aged as a high elf. So he does look youthful but he's the son of a 2.5ky elf ... so who really knows. But judging by his mastered skill of the bow and also the Elven sword; and let alone his wit and thoughtfulness.... he is clearly not very young. Really good work you do sir. I know this just a fantasia but I love analyzing it and I'm glad you are so well read in Tolkien. Keep it up, and don't be deceived like the race of men before you....
exellent video...only thing i think different about is what happened in Lorien. I do not think that Galadriel talked to Legolas in that mather your describing ...everyone was more or less given a choise if they could have what they wanted. I think what turned Legolas was Gimlis encounter with Galadriel and how she showed him understanding and compassion and this also opened up Gimli towards the elfs....no telepathic talk about "hey be nice to the dwarf" ...thats to specific for my imagination.

Cool video, I learned alot about this character. I always thought that legolas and gimli's friendship was funny lol especially when he sees gimli's baby picture lol.
Poor Orlando Bloom though, he had a cracked rib at the time of the two towers And Viggo broke his toes during the same film. Jeezus Peter, you gotta prevent our beautiful actors from being hurt
The size double in the running Szene of LotR also had a knee injury. So it was Orlando running with cracked rips, Viggo with broken toes and the size double with a knee injury. Horrid
@@AgeDrain He should have. You ever had cracked or broken ribs? I've had broken toes, Broken fingers, blew up a ankle, and fractured my arm just above my wrist doing stupid stuff over the years. The cracked ribs I got riding a dirt bike were worse than all of that other shit combined. Have a good sneeze or yawn with cracked ribs (hell sit on the pot and push out a turd). Painful as fuck. Plus you HAVE to breathe so you never get any respite from it.
This comment is destined to be buried and with reason. I came late to this party. I nearly shed a tear towards the end of this video. I’m lost in the depth of this world. Thank you Tolkien
Lovely video about Legolas. I just rewatched the Extended Edition of the Lotr trilogy and found this update on your channel, so it was perfect timing. Do you have a video yet on what happened to Mordor after the War of the Ring?
I enjoyed this video, although I'm often left longing for a time and lands that never existed, I'm an archer and hunter I spend a lot of time in the woods and fields away from people because I don't feel like I belong . Any way I got on a tangent , thank you for the video's and keep them coming
That's was awesome.... In the books if I recall the Dunédain went with Aragorn through the mountain to the army of the dead... It would have made more sense had they been in the movie like they were in the books.!
I can’t buy the fact that he only killed 41 orcs during the two towers. I mean they fought until dawn and it seems to me he could kill 41 orcs in less than 1 hour.
After the first Hobbit movie, i knew the second half wouldn’t be good. Imagine my horror when it was announced that the second shortest book was to receive a third half. That’s why i am so shocked whenever i hear people ask for a movie adaptation of the Silmarillion; it wouldn’t go well Legolas told Aragorn and Gimli that traveling with “you children” made him feel old, but that Fangorn made him feel young for the first time on the Quest Also, 3:47 ish, “Caradhras”, the “dh” is pronounced like a “th”, like Maedhros son of Feanor
"...he could sleep, if sleep it could be called by Men, resting his mind in the strange paths of Elvish dreams, even as he walked open-eyed in the light of this world." (Two Towers Chapter 2) Tolkien used words with care. In his essay 'On fairy-stories' he gives a definition of the word 'strange': "the strange (that is rare or remote facts)" Which is a pretty strange definition. He means, I think, things that are hard to bring to mind, or it takes a long time to do it -- the feeling you have when a word is "on the tip of your tongue"
Thranduil's father established the Woodland Realm in the early SA after the destruction of Belariand. So it's likely he was born just before the migration, or early SA, or mid SA. Take your pick. That would mean Legolas would have been born mid SA at the latest. Possibly early SA. Or maybe even just before or after the time of the Sindaran migration through Ost-gil-i-ath to the Greenwood.
Good stuff my friend. Found your channel a few days ago, already saw everything LOTR. keep it up! Also, as a total LOTR world lore noob, i am curious about Tulkas and his fight against Melkors army, aswell as the quest of Beren. Kind regards!
I love Legolas in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies. Are there any books written solely about him by Mr. Tolkien? I would love to read it.
I love your videos. Can you make a vid about Glorfindel? There's definitely some confusion as to whether the one from Gondolin is the same one from Rivendell. I'd love to hear your take on it.
I was always so confused by that, I heard somewhere tolkien intended in his notes that it is the same person reincarnated. But you're right it doesn't seem so clear
I thought it was two guys with the same name... one died killing a balrog, the other rescued Frodo after the Morgul Blade. Or at least i thought the first one died killing a Balrog in the first age
@@ArchetypeGotoh Elves don't really die. They can re-house their spirits in Aman and get new bodies. Glorfindel may have returned by special dispensation to aid Elrond in the Third Age.
That his heart would forever yearn for the sea, to travel to the undying lands. And so his home wouldn't feel like 'home' since he wanted to be elsewhere
Grey Elves like him originally journeyed west to go to Aman, but stalled somewhere in the East, settling the forests of Middle Earth. Legolas was warned by Treebeard that if he heard the sounds of the Sea, his people's desire to go West would be awakened and he would have the urge.
When the Lord of the Rings movies were coming out I always thought it was funny that people would say that Legolas was overpowered. This was a good way to tell those that had read Tolkien and those who had not. Legolas wasn't that strong compared to the elves of Elrond's and Galadriel's generations :)

Just beautiful. Need to re-read all of Tolkien yet again. Such a genious!
Never gets old! :)
Cool video, I learned alot about this character. I always thought that legolas and gimli's friendship was funny lol especially when he sees gimli's baby picture lol.
Poor Orlando Bloom though, he had a cracked rib at the time of the two towers
And Viggo broke his toes during the same film.
Jeezus Peter, you gotta prevent our beautiful actors from being hurt
And Sean astin stepping on broken glass in the Anduin haha
The size double in the running Szene of LotR also had a knee injury. So it was Orlando running with cracked rips, Viggo with broken toes and the size double with a knee injury.
Horrid
@dustisdeadbodies85 how...did the horses die?
The cracked ribs Orlando got became a running joke on set. Apparently Orlando reminded everyone everyday how hurt he was.
Crazy he can float on the surface of the snow 😆 legolas is basically a chest code tbh
Thank you. This deepens my understanding of the character of Legolas.
This was a good video! I missed these Karl! Keep up the good work!
I enjoyed this video, although I'm often left longing for a time and lands that never existed,
I'm an archer and hunter I spend a lot of time in the woods and fields away from people because I don't feel like I belong .
That’s why i am so shocked whenever i hear people ask for a movie adaptation of the Silmarillion; it wouldn’t go well
Legolas told Aragorn and Gimli that traveling with “you children” made him feel old, but that Fangorn made him feel young for the first time on the Quest
Also, 3:47 ish, “Caradhras”, the “dh” is pronounced like a “th”, like Maedhros son of Feanor
Great video! Legolas was always one of my favs
Your wonderfully researched potted history's are awesome mate, thank you.
15:49 "their friendship was greater than any friendship that ever existed"
Oh do tell 😏
"Friendship" like how Turin and Beleg were such good mates? 👀
Homiesexual
Truly one of the best channels on RUclips
Really appreciate the subtitles. I can watch in bed without waking my wife up. Thanks, you do great work
Yay another video.
Thanks man.
Keep it up :)
Cheers Andron! :)
Thank you for your videos my middle earth brother. May the grace of the Valar be with us all.
"...he could sleep, if sleep it could be called by Men, resting his mind in the strange paths of Elvish dreams, even as he walked open-eyed in the light of this world." (Two Towers Chapter 2)
Tolkien used words with care. In his essay 'On fairy-stories' he gives a definition of the word 'strange':
"the strange (that is rare or remote facts)"
Which is a pretty strange definition. He means, I think, things that are hard to bring to mind, or it takes a long time to do it -- the feeling you have when a word is "on the tip of your tongue"
My fav character is Legolas, so this is an amazing vid!
Cheers mate, hope we did him justice! ;)
Also known as will turner, captain of the Flying Dutchman
And the pathetic prince of troy.

Wonderful video Legolas is one of my favorites 👍🏽💗
Thank you for sticking to the books..
*"They're taking the hobbits to Isengard!"*
I swear, I was really tempted to include that line somewhere 😂
Saruman..!
Nice video and great use of LOTRO Online shots :)
Good stuff my friend. Found your channel a few days ago, already saw everything LOTR. keep it up! Also, as a total LOTR world lore noob, i am curious about Tulkas and his fight against Melkors army, aswell as the quest of Beren. Kind regards!
And lo, the screams of a thousand fangirls was heard in the ether...
You speak the truth, brother.
yo not just the girls
I love Legolas in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies. Are there any books written solely about him by Mr. Tolkien? I would love to read it.
Actually, Legolas mentions in the movie that his mother was dead, in an unmarked grave in 'battle of the 5 armies' when he was talking to Tauriel.
In Tolkien's notes he meant for him to be the same person, returned from Aman to assist Elrond.
I loved this video, Karl! Thank you so much!
Wonderful channel. Deep info. Interesting questions. No pretense. Well done.
Notifications say 53seconds old, home page says 19hours old....great YT stay consistent lol
Your mother loved you....... That scene made me cry... Of laughter..
Republika Dugave pbbbtt so true
the best part about your videos is the research backing it.
What do you mean by if he heard the song of the seagulls then he would never feel at home in the forest again?
That his heart would forever yearn for the sea, to travel to the undying lands. And so his home wouldn't feel like 'home' since he wanted to be elsewhere
Gulls are actually land birds. Just saying.
@@themagictheatre2965 -- same can be said of Legolas as his people never left Middle Earth despite having been called there.
Grey Elves like him originally journeyed west to go to Aman, but stalled somewhere in the East, settling the forests of Middle Earth.
Legolas was warned by Treebeard that if he heard the sounds of the Sea, his people's desire to go West would be awakened and he would have the urge.
A Great Background to work with. Will have to read the story again.!
Really good video. I took notes :P
Great video geek :)
Thanks buddy :)
The name Mirkwood bring in mind, not only Lord Of The Rings, but Stranger Things too. It is connecting both series. For me anyway.
When the Lord of the Rings movies were coming out I always thought it was funny that people would say that Legolas was overpowered. This was a good way to tell those that had read Tolkien and those who had not.
Legolas wasn't that strong compared to the elves of Elrond's and Galadriel's generations :)
I wonder if Galadriel's gift to Gimli also contributed to Legolas's 'giving the dwarf a chance.'
Need a Gimli video!
Love the videos!
As always a awesome video. I really enjoyed it. 👏
Thanks mate, glad you liked it!
When i first saw Legolas' father the first thought that came to my head was *By the Gods, you're a man*
Second thought was 'Damn, this guy's a jerk'?
