I'm a former deputy, and I am in disbelief at some of the dumb schitt I see cops do. To walk up to someone like that and ask for ID is bs. People know what's up with the ID game. To throw that out and they push back, you need to drop it. To push it and threaten arrest when there is no justified reason to ask is crooked.

Id say its about 10% officers deserve being supported. Tired of the support the law an officers. They dont stop crimes they write up reports after the fact, their other duties include making criminals out of anyone who rubs them the wrong way. Hell i had a judge after id gotten a traffic ticket for expired registration i was getting a fine an the judge asked me when i would have it payed off, i said "well i dont know for sure" an he didnt like that answer so he revoked my fine an gave me 3days in jail, i almost lost my job of 22yrs because of that dumb shit all over a judges anger problems, this is Wayne county Detroit although i live literally 50miles from downtown Detroit i had to go stay 3days in the dirtiest most inhumane place ive ever seen, it looked worse than any movie could describe, it wasnt the inmates who were foul it was the guards an how disgusting the entire place looked. Fuq the pigs they are not your friend

I had the cops called on me for sleeping in my car in a walmart parking lot during the day. Some nosey person said i had a bunch of money in my lap passed out.. there was no money, and i was just too tired to drive. The cops acted like it was illegal to do that, and they harassed me.
You're sleeping in a Walmart parking lot the person could have had a heart attack it wouldn't be the first time. The poice have probable cause to check it out money or no money. Maybe the person is intoxicated, the police would be negligent not to check it out the person could be ill. Don't sleep in your vehicle where many people can see you because someone is going to call the police figuring something might be wrong with the peson.

It is illegal to sleep in some walmart parking lots, that's why many of them now employ security. It's on a walmart by walmart basis. I lived in a van, some states pretty much have 0 walmarts you can sleep at, but most are fine with it. I had issues in Texas and Colorado. If a walmart has a policy on this, you're not allowed to do so.

It was very disturbing to watch this woman and her family being harassed by officers for absolutely no reason. Common sense tells us from the actions of all the officers that this happens all the time. I myself, a woman, have been too scared to refuse my I.D. to an officer. You can't convince me these officers and others aren't trained bullies. They are trained to lie to anyone to get what they want, it is not a far stretch to trample on civil rights. All of them were trained to bully til they get what they think they want.

I asked a cop for directions to a store. When I was starting to walk away, he asked me for my I.D. This was several years ago, and still doesn't make sense as to why they ran it. They handed it back, and let me go. Last I checked, I was white as well.

One time I had to park in the parking lot and go to sleep because I was too tired to drive any further without falling asleep behind the wheel and the cops pulled me out of my car and accused me of being under the influence arrested me and searched my car without my permission. They found my weed pipe and I was arrested. Had I known that I could protest to getting out of my car and giving them my ID I would have done it. They didn't even ask for my ID. They just started out treating me like a criminal from jump. I could be sitting pretty right now had I known my rights then.

the same thing almost happened to our family outside of de moines iowa like 12 years ago. the only difference was the superior got there and told them they are all a bunch of idiots and get the handcuffs off us. we were also sleeping at a rest stop. it was bonkers. we are white so its not just a black thing.

Can I be both happy that this woman won, but also upset at the amount she won? People who've been imprisoned for a decade for a crime they didn't commit don't collect anywhere near what this woman won for what's ultimately just one annoying day.
The award amount is more of a lawyer thing than a victim thing.
She shouldn't get less, those people you speak of should get much more. Let the system feel the pain and maybe that system will be a little more careful training/vetting their cops and sending people to prison, because as it is, at least with cops, I see an awful lot of evidence that there are way too many of them enforcing laws they don't understand. That woman didnt just have an 'annoying day' she got humiliated and probably even more importantly the constitution got shlt on. This bullshlt we just witnessed needs to be snuffed out with a quickness.

You know what is the worse part is being a back up officer that shows up and only knowing what the other officer has told you is going on and as you show up all you see is resisting and possible altercation and now you take action based on the knowledge with out knowing that the contact officer had pushed this to an unnecessary situation.
My mom pulled over on a highway at night to sleep. A cop came to do a wellness check and gave me a McDonald's free meal coupon for keeping my belt on while she slept. Glad he was just doing a wellness check and didn't go ham in my mom like this guy.
This is why I don't put a blue line decal on my vehicle or wave a blue line flag. The covid lockdowns showed police support should be conditional of their behavior

Kevin’s analogy to mass shooters was a great example.
They don't need it. They just drop the "we've had recent break ins" line on white people too. I've also had the "this is a high drug trafficking area" like that's some sort of probable cause for simply driving down the street. Even when I know its the least drug trafficked area and they see I left the worst spot after checking my ID. Most of the time I've had my pockets and/or car rummaged through there was no excuse given at all though.
They can ask you for ID but you don’t have to give it to them. Of course they are gonna ask cause most people will just give it to them.
Most people don't know their rights those that do show their ID because they want to be on their way. People can put in a complaint it doesn't look good on an officers resume to many complaints might cost them their livlihood.
Meanwhile, three homes were broken into, four businesses were robbed, two cars were stolen, and three people were mugged.

Having worked in UK Law Enforcement it always amazes me how US cops are always so aggressive, obnoxious and confrontational. No wonder they have such problems there.
I think it is alot due to the fact that every person they stop is potentially carrying and also the narrative against them.

I think they need to hire people to review the body cam footage daily of everyone to do employee reviews like everyone else,and determine when they are fishing, incorrect, need more training, are too aggressive, and if patterns emerge that are risky, retrain, office, and offer reassignment or termination. This would also stop officers from turning off their recording gear. If I’m on the job and provide false information, ie lie, I get in trouble or terminated. If my manager noticed I can improve, I am glad I can be offered the opportunity to improve my skill set.
Reviewing all Xmas will be expensive but I am absolutely sure it is less than the multimillion of payouts. But an order of magnitude.

The do not HAVE TO comply further helps criminals. Cops check for criminal violations for MY safety. Respect authority here in FL. I was taught to always comply. Florida is not a stop & ID state. You are only legally obligated to ID if you committed an offense or suspected of a crime.
I love Texas because i only have to provide my name/ID if im being arrested. I don't have to identify at any other time. Even when being detained i don't have to provide ID.

She did cooperate and answer all of his questions, the cop is the one that was acting aggressive and escalated the situation, not the people in the car.

thing is, this same type of thing has happened to me where a cop is asking me why I am parked in a spot and then search my car. I went ahead and gave them my ID and allowed them to search me which I did not have to. I suspect, I too would have been handcuffed had I not given in. This lady was in her right to resist and should not have been cuffed. But this is not a unique experience to black folks. And if this happened to me, I would win NO money.

Happened to me, too. Was asked if they could search and when I said “no”, the trainer cop pulled out his taser and pointed it at me then forced me to turn around where I was handcuffed, searched (twice) and then roughed up by the trainee cop.
They tore my car apart, even ripped out two of my seat springs.
Eventually, they let me go. They said I had a tail light out but the gas station a block away let me see there was nothing wrong with my tail lights.
Some of these cops behave this way because they can. There’s nothing more to it.

strobing lights and a Maglite rapping on your window. I had one highway patrol officer shining his bright ass light in my eyes to verify I was wearing my contacts. It was totally uncalled for and I'm extremely photosensitive too.
