Very interesting. Especially so considering the tracks that took years to come to fruition. Swan Song/Midnight Moonlight took 15 years or so to come together!!!!!

Thank you very much for this. The Rover is a song that was not often played live and most of us are only familiar with the album version. As a guitar player it was great to hear all these nuances and different fills that Jimmy played.

The live performance in Australia or New Zealand was around the same time as they were recording " Houses If The Holy". The Rover was almost on that album and was played to a music journalist called Ritchie Yorke by Jimmy Page in the Summer of 1972. It's possibly one of the best " unknown" Zep songs of all time.

Im pretty sure they didnt played it fully cause the chorus have 2 guitars in the studio version,
and playing live the chorus arpeggio without the rythm guitar would sound empty in that part...thats why they only played the first part...
Page could play just the rhythm guitar,to sound fuller, but without the arpeggio, the magic is gone...
In the only full live version available,Page play the chorus arpeggio in a different way
to fill more the sound, but dont sounds good...thats the reason why...

@Ryan_Thompson_Guitarist True but I'm gonna guess that Over The Hills was a more popular song, was released as a single and almost needed to be played, as opposed to the rover which I don't believe was ever released as a single and on top of that, the range needed to sing that song probably put them in a position where they could throw it out.

Per Wikipedia, engineers Harwood and/or Nevison had problems with the '72 Stargroves master tapes (missing guitar, or incomplete?), and final overdubs were added later. It's a shame, because this one, Custard Pie, and 'Houses' would have been perfect to include on the album. Cut out No Quarter, throw 'D'yer Maker and The Crunge together as a radio-friendly single, and you've got a stealth HOTH!
