Hi guys. I so pleased to see new durafly releases being reviewed with you guys again, and I'm glad you liked it. The Exaclibur was my first and only warmliner project I brought to market and one of my last full releases wth Durafly before leaving HK, so really happy to see it reviewed here and on the recommendations of the wider community. Look forward to more. Stuart.
Hey Stuart, I was pretty surprised when I listened to the podcast the other day. Good luck in whatever you plan on doing in the future - and perhaps you can make it to Flite Fest East this year! You are missing out on something if you don't. :) HK needs to enable the active motor braking by default on that bird. Reading through the comments it looks like the FT crew didn't do that before going to the field, so they missed out on the awesome dive-whistling...
Two years later and the Excalibur is still my go-to fast fun glider along with an MPX Blizzard. The original Durafly tail servos wouldn't center so all four servos were replaced with higher-quality MG. It seemed slow first flight on 4S with the stock 13x8 so I upgraded to 5S and 10x12 Aeronaut with metal spinner and set the brake. Current was still below 50A. Clocked a pass at 127mph. Tweaked the wings so after straightening went with 11x12 4S and keep it under 100mph or so. Yes it carries a fair amount of inertia for diving passes but excels at fast powered passes rather than punch, cut, dive. If the wings were covered or laminated it would no doubt be slightly less draggy and pick up more speed in dives, in addition to making the wings slightly stronger. The fuse failed behind the wing so it was reinforced. Lots of spoileron for landing plus I added a jet-style top-mounted speed brake just for fun. Very capable plane with a few mods.
Very nice guys and gals. Bixler is the reason i am in the hobby now. my first plane was the bixler from Hk in i think it was 2010 or 11 cant remeber and now my apartment is filled to the brim with planes and i also compete in pylon racing. thanks for everything you do for the hobby
Great review, but I'm a little disappointed you didn't take it up high and dive bomb it so you can hear how awesome it sounds with the motor off. It's by far the best feature of this aeroplane and you didn't demonstrate it. I have the Excalibur and absolutely love listening to it go by with the prop off. Other than that, you guys are my inspiration for getting into flight and I hope you continue to show and review planes that come out from time to time. I know you love your quads, but please don't stop doing reviews on planes. Thanks Flite Test for everything you do. :)
Thanks for the feedback Aussie! Sometimes we do not hit every point, but are glad to have our community there to show us some cool tid bits of info that we may have missed! Blessings and thanks for watching! S.O.
I love your work guys. Have you made a video where you have had a competition amongst yourselves on who can drop a toy parachutists (from a candy dropper etc) from a RC plane (say 100ft high) to a target on the ground - who gets closest wins? Would love to see that!
Had this plane for over a year now, crashed it once, but was fixed. It's amazing to fly but a challenge to land without a proper landing strip. Even with spoilerons it comes in so fast. And when you order extra prop and spinner, also order some extra bolts because they are not included.
Hey guys I was wondering if you could please help me with the throttle range calibration? For some reason I can't seem to get it right, I must be doing it wrong cuz I can't get mine to get full speed, I seen a lot of vids and mine goes half of all the ones I've seen, I will highly appreciate any help or input on it!!!...
Good one. Thanks. Looks like the quad was chewing a bunch of air to try and keep up....how did it compare to flying the big wing you guys did last month when you flew them in formation...?
Josh, please, please let me teach you how to fly a warmliner. If the prop is turning more than 25% of the time, you're not doing it right (and likely about to melt something in the power system). In other news, I ran some calculations on this bird a while back and found out that HK picked a really inefficient prop-motor combo for this airplane--700 W at a pitch speed of only 57 mph (that's more power than I put through my 3 meter, for less performance!). Switching to an Aeronaut 12x10 (or 12x13 if you dare) would make this a real performer for roughly the same power consumption. Lastly, program that brake on your esc. You have no idea how much glide performance you're losing! All the HK fixed wing esc's appear to use the same programming sequence--brake is the first item on the menu.
Really would like to see a review of the Eflite Convergence, Ive had one that Horizon Hobby replaced do to it spinning out of control to the ground by itself. Ive put 10 or so flights on the second one with no problems yet---but I wanted to get your opinion and review--wanted to take it to Flite Fest West
like your tests very much. but sorry with this one you can do better 😉 1. activate breaking for gliding , with folded prop you can reach much more speed in a dive. 2. try the optional 13x8 prop. 3.try a more low profile cam the gopro session works as a airbrake, runcam works a bit better. you misses now 50% more fun with this awsome plane. thanks guys 👍👍
Is better to have the plastic spinner than metal. Something is going to give in at the moment of impact, and if the prop, nor the spinner break, energy will transfer to motor parts, and possibly bending the motor center shaft. Much easier and cheaper to replace a spinner or a prop than a motor shaft, and who knows tear the motor mount etc. great video, thank you +1
I know this video is more than 4 years old, but this is an awesome airplane definitely my favorite glider. it sounds amazing and is so powerful with a big 4s battery.
how about a Mini Talon challenge: 1. a water balloon bomber (sure someone won't mind being the target) 2. the long range flyer (just stuff as much Lipo in there so it barely takes off ;) 3. the lightning fast flyer (Powerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr) 4. the totally modded BB-gun shooting warbird! (and thke the rest of them down) these MT's are so versatile and forgiving, I bet you guys can make some Awesome mods that even the Mini Talon forum coulnd't have imagined!
Wow great video guys! I do love Flite Test, I'm actually not to far away from Peter Sirpol, he lives in Dayton OH. I live in Hamilton OH. I love this plane and the Review! I see this being purchased by me in the near future. Flight Test, these are the type of videos I thoroughly enjoy, planes I buy from hobby stores, not so much building them because I'm not talented enough and motivated enough to do lol. Please do more reviews like this. Josh Scott is the man, love that dude!
Was just watching the dive footage in this video and was thinking that a great challenge would be 3D printing a functional stuka diving siren for foam models. Would tie in nicely with the 3D printing theme for this year :D
Hey Guys, Do you think this would be suitable as a 2nd plane? Been flying the FT Arrow for 2 months and I feel relatively secure with it. I would like to know if the Excalibur can be flown a bit slower and carefully to begin with. HK just lowered the price and I guess nobody can resist falling in love with the look of it!
I just recently purchased the excalibur and I would like to know if there is a video on how to set up my transmitter for this plane? Im pretty sure I dont have the connections to my reciever right as well as the settings for my v-tail cause the control surfaces are not moving correctly when I use the elevator control
I want to see you guys build crazy stuff! With fireworks! And blackjack! No really though I miss the crazy stuff you used to do with David W. and Peter S! Please do some more of that! The EDF afterburner episode is your best!
Glad to see a plane review like the old days. I still watch from time to time, but I was loosing some interest in FT. It makes me happy to see you guys get back to what I have loved and missed on FT!
Come to Flite Fest this year. I'll have a motorglider or two...or three there, and I do fly them correctly. ;)Oh, and there ain't none of that silly EPP foam stuff in mine either!
2 kg, is that with packaging? That can't be right for flight ready at least. I have a 2 m EPP-Motorglider that clocks in at around 950g when all equipmen and trimweight is in. It would be nice to have the weight of the shown setup.
Hola Flite Test! Excellent review! Let's see Josh design and build an FT warmliner. 100mph! Love my FT Mighty Mini Arrow, first plane I've built from plans.
It sure looks amazing. But sins i newer been at the controls of one it is way too powerfull and i like it to go looooong and slow so i can make pictures and scout the terain. There for i would like the rc kit for paper airplanes and hoping its just about keeping the airplane in the sky where i want it to be.
No need for flaps, it really is not a floater and comes down fine with spoilerons setup. It would need brick lifting thermals to stay aloft from the flat, but is nicely weighted to be a decent if not ballistic slope tool.
this looks like a fun bird. I'm going to research it and see about possibly getting one. but I have a question, I haven't seen a lot of foam core planes at all lately. seems like we've been reviewing a whole lot of stuff but not creating a whole lot. hope to see you guys get back into that more.
It was winter time which didn't allow for much testing in Ohio. They've been working on some (and they just released the Pietenpol a little over 4 weeks ago)
Balu true but they used to have many planes in the works. We would hear about what's coming with hints and peaks. Not so much any more. Just miss them...
Doesn't look like you have the brake set on the ESC. Mine came without the brake set and slowed considerably in the glide with the prop windmilling. But once the brake was set it was a much better flight experience.
Flaps on a DX6 I can't help with as I have a Taranis, but I know that set is well capable of flaperons/spoilerons. It's also not difficult to set up the ESC brake, just follow the instructions posted to the RCGroups thread... www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?2694227-Hobbyking-Durafly-Excalibur-warmliner/page57#post35810234
Sorry but I can't help with the Dx6 programming as I use Futaba and I took the simple route with the ESC programming and used the Aerostar programming card which is available from HobbyKing for about $4.50. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.
Any chance to review more planes with gasoline engines? I don't mean like Nitro/glow engines. Like the old red Roadrunner in Flitetest episode? It was awesome episode, altought I felt sad about broken glider.
Nice plane, but you boys need to fly this like a glider/hotliner. That means motor is only for getting up, never ever use motor flying a glider straight and level ;) Do it hotliner style and put the throttle on a switch, and the brake on the throttle stick.
Is the camera person biased on this vid? usually, the camera flicks to each person when they announce who they are but today didn't move an inch towards TJ. Bad hair day?, lol I have not seen any RC petrol engine planes, do you guys review/fly these?
Not sure exactly, but I DO KNOW that Alex has told me that his preferred set up is a larger 6" with little to no camera tilt. We have usually used the run cam Owl Plus as well. Hope this helps and thanks for watching! S.O.
Stop reviewing such awesome planes! My paycheck can't take it!!! Ok not really - keep up the great work - love you guys!! This plane looks outstanding - it's on my wishlist now :)
It flies great, but has some major structural flaws that need to be corrected before first flights. See the RCGroups thread here...www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?2694227-Hobbyking-Durafly-Excalibur-warmliner
Good review guys, but there are a couple of serious flaws in the Excalibur that have caused total losses that you and your viewers need to know about. 1) The firewall on the first run Excaliburs was not strong enough, and must be reinforced with a 1/32 ply/GF/carbon disk glued to the outside of the firewall to prevent a total failure of the nose when starting or stopping the motor. 2) The area behind the wing where the air vents are is very weak and needs to be strengthened with carbon strip laid into the foam with CA to ensure the fuse does not fail after a few landings. Lots more info on the RCGroups Excalibur thread... www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?2694227-Hobbyking-Durafly-Excalibur-warmliner
Nose failure caused by the very poor quality spinner and blades noted in the review - junk them and replace with Aeronaut Cam blades and spinner (11x9s are good and a bit faster than the stock prop)... www.rcgroups.com/forums/showpost.php?p=36133905&postcount=1392
Nose reinforcement (now fitted as stock by HK to more recent Excaliburs to avoid the problems)... www.rcgroups.com/forums/showpost.php?p=36871110&postcount=1688
It's like 300g heavier but has something like twice as much power (Excalibur > 700W, Blaze < 350W). I haven't flown a Blaze yet but from what I've seen at the field it is a good soaring model, considerably slower than an Excalibur. But it's a cheaper glider that isn't designed to go as fast, they're hard to compare.
Since blizzard (multiplex) first introduced there's always another hotliner better than this and then another. Such as exalibur and couple of others. Blizzard is the first of a kind.
I've always had a Taranis but have been trying to expand horizons and fly a bit of everything now. When it comes to personal racing I'm still taranis though
Hi guys. I so pleased to see new durafly releases being reviewed with you guys again, and I'm glad you liked it. whatsup hobbykng
i love your casual showcase videos like these. they do an excellent job of reviewing the product
Brake is the second menu in the ESC, you should try it, it makes an awesome whistling sound when you dive it with the prop folded in!
Great review, but I'm a little disappointed you didn't take it up high and dive bomb it so you can hear how awesome it sounds with the motor off. I think they did that, but forgot to enable the motor braking before going to the field. So it didn't really get to it's full speed while diving.
Thanks for the feedback Aussie! Sometimes we do not hit every point, but are glad to have our community there to show us some cool tid bits of info that we may have missed!
Blessings and thanks for watching!

Every time I watch you flying I'm impressed by the videographer flying the quad. You could have a video on the quad being used.
It's Alex and he's probably flying an FT210. But he has a lot of different quads in his arsenal :)
Everyone is excited about the big miniquad, but I'm excited to see the excalibur fly!
I love your work guys. Have you made a video where you have had a competition amongst yourselves on who can drop a toy parachutists (from a candy dropper etc) from a RC plane (say 100ft high) to a target on the ground - who gets closest wins? Would love to see that!

I bought one on release day, but already broke it, frozen battery, so sad, it flew great :(
YES! new flite test video, makes my day everytime
Thanks for the kind words Stephen! We are happy to be a part of your day ;)
S.O.
Thanks Stefan!
I want too see you guys play with the ornithopters , they are so beautiful in flight!!
Great review guys, and nice plane Stuart! You will be missed!
Are you planning on reviewing the efxtra? Looks interesting...
TALENT on those sticks Josh.
Alex is a master at getting those awesome chase shots!
we are blessed to have him indeed, he does a great job!! ;)

you guys should build and review a giant scale top flite warbird.

I'd like a review of the hobby king shark plane. Add ailerons though.
took me a half hour with a mini file just to open up the yoke to accept the props to fold -there went my 20 minute build time
I just recently purchased the excalibur and I would like to know if there is a video on how to set up my transmitter for this plane? the yoke holes bigger than the prop adapter, so its a crapshoot getting the yoke on center- vibration *cough* aeronaut yoke spinner complete
Glad to see a plane review like the old days. I still watch from time to time, but I was loosing some interest in FT.
It makes me happy to see you guys get back to what I have loved and missed on FT!
Dudes, these are motogliders! You're suppose to climb up with the motor and then cut it off! (Otherwise the retractable prop is useless)
Come to Flite Fest this year. I'll have a motorglider or two...or three there, and I do fly them correctly. ;)Oh, and there ain't none of that silly EPP foam stuff in mine either!
They're warmliners. Made for speed.
should do some throttle off dives guys. that prop spinning gives a lot of drag
2 kg, is that with packaging? That can't be right for flight ready at least. I have a 2 m EPP-Motorglider that clocks in at around 950g when all equipmen and trimweight is in. It would be nice to have the weight of the shown setup.
Nice to see a return! It would be nice to see more glow/gas reviews!
Thanks for the feedback Jarek!
S.O.
i just ordered a durafly brake card- the beeps are not fun trying to do
This is what i subbed for years ago, so sick of the multirotor/fpv stuff. Keep up the good work guys.
Hi guys i was looking at the Durafly v70 vtail is this one better to buy over the v70?
Hola Flite Test! Excellent review! Let's see Josh design and build an FT warmliner. 100mph! Love my FT Mighty Mini Arrow, first plane I've built from plans.
Thanks for the suggestion friend! Thanks for watching and being a part of it! ;)
Blessings,
S.O.
PLEASE REVIEW THE Durafly EFXTRA!!!!! I LOVE mine!
I would love to see some content on Propar HOTLINERS PLEASE. Fantastic Family, thank you.
Was Alex chasing you guys with the FT 210 or something else?
What kind of FPV camera is that on the excalibur??☺
It sure looks amazing. But sins i newer been at the controls of one it is way too powerfull and i like it to go looooong and slow so i can make pictures and scout the terain. There for i would like the rc kit for paper airplanes and hoping its just about keeping the airplane in the sky where i want it to be.
Great video! You guys are awesome! :)
Thanks for the kind words friend!
S.O.
It looks like these could benefit from flaps. It would have been nice to see more detail of the model, tail configuration, inside space etc.
No need for flaps, it really is not a floater and comes down fine with spoilerons setup. It would need brick lifting thermals to stay aloft from the flat, but is nicely weighted to be a decent if not ballistic slope tool.
Head to head with the Zephyr! You know you wanna :)
Did you guys enable esc braking?
I thought they said it doesn't have braking?
Of course it does, you need just need to program it.
Sorry. I meant "it doesn't have braking set up". :)
Enable braking, but make sure you reinforce the nose before doing so - see my comments above.
I thought the new ones came with a fiber glass reinforcement for the firewall? I could be wrong tho.
you should review the Vusion Extreme race pack fpv quad all in one
How does this compare against the conscendo evolution?
this looks like a fun bird.
You need to watch the guys on Instagram too ;): instagram.com/p/BRghhlPlsI1/?taken-by=flitetestjb
More gliders! Maybe a challenge who can stay up longest
review suggestion------- TUNDRA 3s a lighter plane vs Dynam PRIMO 4s a little heaver plane and better price
please review some huge glider.. I like those episodes the best
Check out the Eflite Convergence!
Doesn't look like you have the brake set on the ESC. Mine came without the brake set and slowed considerably in the glide with the prop windmilling. But once the brake was set it was a much better flight experience.
Airwaves Ted I want to get this model. Is it difficult to set up the braking? How about the flap set up on dx6? Thanks for your help!
This plane is awesome!!
You guys too keep up the good work!!!!
I've gotta be honest, this one might be the reason I seriously get into hotliners.
It's really not a hotliner - they have a lot more performance. It is a fun affordable introduction to the concept though for the intermediate pilot.
Are you going to cover the Taranis Q X7?
What receiver should I use? Gyro?
Clear Nail polish to balance your props, does wonders :)
That means motor is only for getting up, never ever use motor flying a glider straight and level ;)
Do it hotliner style and put the throttle on a switch, and the brake on the throttle stick.
Flite Test, please could you do a general review of E Flite UMX planes like the Pitts, Corsair and some other scale planes. Thanks
Is the camera person biased on this vid? usually, the camera flicks to each person when they announce who they are but today didn't move an inch towards TJ. Bad hair day?, lol
I have not seen any RC petrol engine planes, do you guys review/fly these?
Sea Skimmer just a mistake. But I want to change it so it says "and I'm T-Awwww" 😂
Is there a discussion/ build guide for building the ideal FPV drone for chasing airplanes?
Not sure exactly, but I DO KNOW that Alex has told me that his preferred set up is a larger 6" with little to no camera tilt. We have usually used the run cam Owl Plus as well.
Hope this helps and thanks for watching!
S.O.
is there a transmitter/receiver combo for the Dominator HD3 that doesnt require a HAM licence
I'm 10 and I be been watching you sense I was 5
Thats awesome friend!
Thanks for watching and being a part of it bud!
S.O.
FliteTest you're welcome
Corey Davenport, you don't have to be a but about it, you should be lifting him up not putting him down, stop being a hater
+Corey Davenport yeah you freeloader
I wish I was watching for that long
Stop reviewing such awesome planes! My paycheck can't take it!!! Ok not really - keep up the great work - love you guys!! This plane looks outstanding - it's on my wishlist now :)
It flies great, but has some major structural flaws that need to be corrected before first flights. See the RCGroups thread here...www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?2694227-Hobbyking-Durafly-Excalibur-warmliner
Is this an updated dynamic s ?
Hi can you review the mini apprentice
When is the giant scale mini quad coming
plane looks awesome for fpv. can cover distance fast.
I review of the new Durafly EFXtra would be nice
Great Video !
Is there no brake for the engin ?
There is, but you need to set it up yourself.
i'm waiting for testing the life size hover bike
Cut the throttle before landing and spinner won't be an issue.
Hey Flitetest, I'd love to see you review the tiny balsa Edge 540 from hobbyking (1m, the red and yellow one). Nice video as always !
what's the equivalent from Horizon or Tower Hobbies?

Mandatory fuselage reinforcement just aft of the rear wing root... www.rcgroups.com/forums/showpost.php?p=36865610&postcount=1686
Wonder how it compares with the Blaze.
Blizzard is the first of a kind.
just sitting here waiting for BIG QUAD video!! :)
I don't know why but I thought you flew Spektrum T-Bone
I've always had a Taranis but have been trying to expand horizons and fly a bit of everything now. When it comes to personal racing I'm still taranis though
I never forget to watch your video :) desktop notification on.
Hey guys love your videos, keep up the great work!
Thanks Johan! Will do sir! ;)

Great to see more fixed wing reviews! Especially the affordable HK products. Maybe the Durafly EFXtra next?

Hello FliteTest! I was just wondering if you guys could design a swappable P-38 twin engine. I think that it would be awesome.
